You are right sloloser, they dont' need the granola bars and punch. Water is very good for them and fruit and veggies. Glad you are watching out for their health too.
Have a great week, Nan

Shopping for one definitely cuts the bills and makes things easier to control, but although we are five at our house I still find the bills are grocery bills are lower. We eat less meat for one thing. I also don't buy junk food. If the kids want it they either have to make it or buy it themselves.

Deciding that the kids don't need things like granola bars and punch has helped cut the bill.

Hi, I have found that since I'm eating less that I dont' spend as much money on food. I dont' eat the junk food, don't buy that Latte every day, eat healthy and am definitely saving money in the long run. I used to buy a BIG carton of Strawberries, for instance. I would mostly have them gone by the time I got home or the end of the day. Now I make them last 4-5 days, only eating a few at a time.
Hope this helps someone.
(Oh, I live alone so it's a lot easier for me to control what gets eaten.)

Yes, I discovered that feature. Like you, I forget to look there but I'll try to do that more often.

Your new team is really shaping up nicely. I commend you on how nicely you're starting good topics/threads.

Before I go to bed-- I have to say that when I enjoy a Yahoo group called Cindy's Porch. Her big thing is to "shop at home first". She is so right!

I tend to hoard food. I have this "thing" where I want to make a recipe when I see it... I am almost OCD about stocking my pantry with staples.

Now that I'm following this website's encouragement, I have learned to shop at home before compiling my grocery list. I have stopped buying duplicates of too many things. Plus, my impulse grocery buys are being used up. Like tonight...why did I buy that Trader Joe's Mango sauce? Hmmmm... the lid had dust on it! LOL

I have shopped from my upright freezer all month long-- cooking things I bought on sale, and forgot about. Oh yeah, I have a freezer inventory...but do I remember to update it? Nope!

So, that's how I have cut my grocery bill. Look inside my fridge, freezer and pantry and think up recipes based on what I have. If I'm stumped, I post a request on my foodie group and I find all kinds of ideas!

It's been a lovely weekend, but I'm shutting down and resting for a busy week at the high school.

I don't know if you know it or not, but all recipes that we list on Spark Recipes are automatically featured in the Blogs & Recipes By Team Members section here.

However, I do like the idea of announcing recipes with a link for several reasons.

1) I don't always look in that area every day. I could miss a recipe. However, I won't miss a link in a thread because I'll get e-mailed about it.

2) Not all recipes we post may be of interest to the group. If you love lobster and want to publish a lobster recipe that's fine. But it's hardly a budget item!

We do have links to Spark Recipes in some of our threads, and I do like have links for particular types of food, but I think I'll start a thread for links to our favorite budget SP recipes. And yes, you may put a link to a recipe in more than one thread.

When we post a recipe on Spark Recipes, maybe we could just announce it with a link?

I am trying to enter my recipes into my own Cookbook so that I can track my nutrition. It's double the work, for me, since I already store recipes into my cookbook software but I can't upload into Spark Recipes.

I am working on ways to change my recipes to be lower in fat, higher in fiber and with only fresh and wholesome ingredients. I have banned processed foods and high fructose corn syrup from my kitchen. I cook on a budget, too.

Or recipes! I think it would be good if we could make a nice collection of recipes that are low budget and healthy. (Especially if they are on the low cal side.)

Hi Jae!

Well this team's focus is on losing weight while watching the budget.

Do you have any ideas to share?

Feel free to start a thread under General Discussion or in the Food and Recipes Forum.

We'll have to decide whether we need another forum for challenges, exercise, or anything else.

Hi!

I joined because I've been greeting new people who say that they can't afford to eat well. I tell them that I'm spending less on food now, not more.

Beans cost less than hamburger. (Although I still eat hamburger, just not as much of it.)

I thought we should have a Budget Conscious Healthy Eating group and almost didn't find this one. I found it today. Missed it yesterday.
