Hi everyone. I'm Vickey and I'm a 56 year old wife, mother and grandmother. I'm not new to this team but I have not been active in over a year so I figured it would be good to reintroduce myself. I recently spent a week in the hospital that has made me reevaluate my life and what I need to do to get and stay healthy. I have degenerative joint disease, severe osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, thoracic outlet syndrome, neuropathy, diabetes, high blood pressure and now have gastritis and ulcerative lesions in my stomach resulting from h-pylori and stress which all give me more than enough reasons to get my health back on track. Because of the recent problems with my stomach I am off all my anti-inflammatory meds so my joints and muscles are giving me a really rough time making moving even harder although I'm pushing myself to do so.

Thanks for allowing me to come back and be part of this team.

Hi, I'm Janet, age 70, 4'8+, and retired...I've been using SparkPeople much of the time since 2006, but not consistently until the last six months or so. I have severe arthritis, plus limitations with my arms due to a bilateral mastectomy and lymphedema associated with breast cancer (5 years ago). I decided a few years ago to stop telling myself I can't do any exercise and just figure out what I can do and do it. I use a couple of chair exercise videos (one here at SP and one called "Chair Dancing Through the Ages"), or I just move to music while seated for about 12 minutes a day. I also try to do 5-7 minutes on a rebounder a few times a week to include something that is weight-bearing.

This team looks great!

Hi everyone, Karen here, new to the team. Recovering from heart attack last fall and double foot surgery. So much weight put on from depression and non-movement. Dr given me permission to start working on it now that we've stabilized the BP (yay!) I tried walking, but it was too much too soon and our weather has been so uncooperative so I got an indoor bicycle then found SP and Coach Nichole's chair exercises. Slow going and I get discouraged, still not understanding my eating frenzies, but am in this for the long haul!

we have a Youtube video channel with lots of chair exercise videos and some bed exercises also - so you should have no trouble exercising while you are recovering.
Also on my web site are some exercises you can do in bed and chair ones too - that you can print off and follow.
The links for the Youtube channel and the printed exercises are on the Welcome Sparkmail you received when you joined the team - if you have any trouble finding anything please ask.
Meanwhile please feel free to make yourself at home and join in the challenges and chat thread
Ann

Hi my name is Jan. I have been waiting so long (three years) for surgery on my left foot for torn tendons and ligaments that I have blown out my right foot. Uneven gait caused arthritis etc to destroy my foot. My right foot is now so bad it could not support me if they did my left foot first. anyway I am going in on June 23rd to have bone taken from hip to rebuild right ankle, leg muscle cut to release tension on one side of foot and pins put in toes to fix the way they lie. Looking at roughly six weeks of bed rest with absolutely no weight put on foot, then a few months of slowing building up the foot. When that is done I will go back on surgery weight list to correct the left foot. Will need chair exercises for quite a while if I do not want to gain back the weight I have lost to make recovery easier. Happy to finally start on road to recovery. emoticon

Jan
Looking forward to a whole new me!

Hi, all! I'm a returning member to the team. I had to take time off SP for a while because I was taking care of my mother (who passed away in February). It was more than a full time job!

I'm now working on "finding out who I am!" I am no longer the care giver or the daughter - I am ME - but who am I???

I've been using several chair exercises as my own healthy drastically declined as I ignored it to take care of my mother.

I look forward to interacting with each and every one of you!

Hi - I was cleared by my doctor. And spent a couple stints in a nursing home and had therapy then. Most of what I am doing is a variant of what they had me do. Don't have speakers on the computer right now so I am not sure how well I will be able to do videos but, I will check them out. Thank you very much.

Hi - I have been on SP for a while but not active. An extended illness has left me basically bed bound at this point. I am trying to work myself to the point I can get in the wheelchair at least. It is a bit of a hurdle to over come right now. I have started exercising more consistently than I had. I have been trying to find lower body exercised that I can do & as I find them I add them into my routine. Tonight I was finally brave enough to try the stepper that sits on the floor & I can do seated. It did not got to bad. My right knee is a lot weaker than the right & painful. I have to be careful I do not push to hard. I have also added in the arm cycle & do a variety of exercises with elastic bands and hand weights. I am truly struggling trying to get my eating under control though. Right now I am probably the heaviest one in the group -I am probably around 350 pounds-cannot stand to weigh myself so I don't know for sure. I don't leave the house & it is just my husband & myself (well & our cats) - I love and adore him and he has taken the best care of me. But, I do get lonely at times which makes everything harder.

It seems that knees get stiff easily especially if rested - its rather like movement greases the joints - so you might find it easier to move them gently. You will find lots of ideas for chair exercise for many mobility levels in the Chair Exercise YouTube channel - click on the team picture on the main team page or refer to the links in the Welcome Sparkmail you received when you joined the team

Hi, I just found this ite and look forward to trying the arm chair exercises. I have Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid & Osteo arthritis and have lots of problems with both knees. Up till a month ago I was able to go to the gym and do a Silver Sneakers class a couple times a week. Then my knees both started to hurt after we went on vacation. I was in the car for hours and when we got back it seemed like my knees were sore. After resting them for a couple weeks and 2 cortisone shots they're not better. So going to see Orthopedic dr as soon as possible. But the inactivity is driving me crazy. So I started looking for exercises I can do from my chair or a stability ball.

I look forward to meeting all of you.

I have limited mobility due to the need for knee surgery which they will not consider until I lose 100 pounds, so that is why I am here. I am a retired teacher, 66 years old with 2 children and 5 grandchildren. I used to enjoy hiking and horseback riding, but I cannot do either one.

goal is to be able to walk again

Not really new, just returning. I left all of my teams to concentrate on ending the BLC round. I am not joining the next round of BLC because I am scheduled for the knee surgery at the end of May. I haven't been exercising ad need to get back to doing something consistently. So, back in the fold.

Hi Joan
Good to see you here. Thereare many chair exercise videos in the chair exercise Youtube channel - click on the team picture on the main team page - they are for all levels of mobility - even some you can do in bed.
You will need to find exercises that are suitable for you according to your doctors instructions - and you may find it easier to mdo some exercise twice in a day - doing a bit less each time - than doing it all in one go and getting tired and sore.
The Chair Exercises Resources thread also has many links and ideas of places that you can find chair exercise - scroll down to read them all.
REmember its not necessary to work hard especialy when you start - many of the more gentle exercises will do just as much good for you!!

Hi - I'm new to this team. I'm on another one but I have become disabled since originally joining and I can no longer exercise how I used to. I've been trying some of the chair exercises and find it hard to do some of them, so I've just been doing the best I can.

I look forward to meeting everyone. Thanks Ann for the warm welcome. emoticon

Hello! emoticon I'm JudyeRae, four months with SparkPeople but brand new to this team. I am using chair exercising to ease me back into exercise.

hi new to this team although I have been a member of Sparks for about 3 1/2 years. As I have a number of medical issues and sometimes do not feel well enough to exercise standing up, I feel this team will help me when this happens and I will be more inspired to sit down to exercise.
