I just checked; and while i had that people could comment I still had the bit checked where it says only spark friends can see your spark team -- oops! didn't notice that one when I was setting it up. Thanks so much for letting me know or I would have been left wondering why nobody visited emoticon

Try unchecking and then re check that option - some commsands have been a bit "iffy" since the updates to the site!!

Actually there might have been a change - I heard something about that you have to update the page before it comes on-line.
I just checked my page - you have to UN - check the "only allow my friends to see my page" and the "Turn my page offline" options to make the page open

Hi all
i've just joined the team I've been on spark for many years
but I took a 9 mths break
I have problems with walking so
I use a walker or cane when I leave the house
our home is small so I'm usually ok inside
but I can ride a bicycle
I had a spinal fusion L5 S1 in 2011
I have little issues with each section of my spine

My enemies don't be glad because of my troubles!

I may be sitting in the dark, but the Lord is my light

I have no idea why you were getting messages - but when you were here before if you joined but then didn't leave the team by actually using the "leave the team" link - then that accounts for it.
Anyway - welcome or is it welcome back??
It is very important as you discovered, to start exercise gently - the Paul Eugine videos are great but can be a bit fast and hard at the start - you might be better starting with an easier one and working up to using those - check out the Chair Exercise YouTube Video - the links to all our resources are on the Welcome to the team Sparkmail you got when you joined. If you didn't get that Sparkmail - let me know and I'll send you a copy.

I have been receiving odd and end notices implying I was a member of the team. I came here before and checked out some of the resources--all great. I also purchased a couple of Paul Eugene videos. When, I received the team digest this morning, I decided --hint taken and joined this group.
My first attempts at fitness were a total disaster. I am over 60, with bad posture and next to nothing flexibility--so the first walking video ended with a hip muscle pull 6 minutes into it.
My program will probably involve a combo sitting and gentle walking exercise.
I am happy to be joining you all.

Hi, I am Judy, new to this group but not to Sparks. Other than walking I can't do standing exercises because my knees bother me (arthritus, I think). I have been doing a couple seated spark videos but joined this team to get more chair exercises to do.
I tried a new one tonight- it was a Paul Eugene chair fitness. Some chair exercises are not as easy as some may think. Looking forward to getting to know you all.

And if you add a profile picture to your Sparkpage I can access your page quickly to answer questions!! (any picture - clipart etc - works fine)

a-ha! Thank you. I'd watched the video on YouTube (then followed the link to this site) so I'll know in future to do it via the site and track it that way.

221 calories playing ball for half an hour? Oh Yes! That would explain why I'm starving afterwards then!

Not that I would be able to sit-ski but am in awe of how much energy that takes.

Thank you for your help, that's really useful

emoticon I'll try to answer your questions but finding the calories burnt in wheelchair exercise can be very difficult!! Obviously all figuresw given are approximate.
If you are referring to the Sparkpeople 11min cardio video - if you look under the video there is a button track calories burned - click that - fill in the fields asked for and it will drop the number you burned into your fitness tracker

Calories burnt in wheelchair exercise -
160lb person burns approx the following in half hour exercise

Sitting, watching TV: 40
Dusting: 65
Table Tennis: 80
Vacuuming: 98
Basketball (shooting baskets): 116
Tennis: 149
Basketball (gameplay): 221
Nordic sit skiing: 428
Obviously you burn a bit more if you are heavier - and less if the time is less!!

For any other chair exercise without the calorie tracking button (ie on the Chair Exercise You Tube Channel ) if you go to your Fitness tracker and in the search box type "chair Exercise" you will get a choice of "High intensity Chair Exercise " or Low Intensity Chair Exercise" - highlight either according to what you have done, fill in the time you did it for and click "add yto my tracker" The approximate number of calories burned will drop into your tracker.

If I can help you more please ask

Hi, just checking in. I'm Anni. I have EDS3 which basically means I have wobbly, sore joints. It also gives me really rubbish proprioception so seated exercise is far safer for me!

I stumbled on this site by looking for whelchair exercise and have done the 11 minute seated cardio but I have no idea how many calories to log against that work out, does anyone know?

Whilst I'm asking, roughly what calorie values should I log for easy/medium/all out pushing as that's what I do instead of trying to walk for fitness (and I'm not even going to think about running ;-) )

I also play wheelchair basketball and do anything up to 5 hours a week training depending on what sessions I do.

Wendi and Emma, thanks for the welcome and pointing me to my welcome letter. I'm really ready to get started on some kind of exercises. I know the surgeon will not want me starting anything too exerting when I see him next week.

Hello from Oregon! I'm Sherrey and new to the team. I'm not so new to Spark having been around a few years ago (as Grits46), but I have some health issues in need of improvement and I want to become more fit and feel good about myself. Saw the chair exercise and since I do have some balance issues and arthritis, I thought it might be a good fit.

Look forward to meeting and supporting each other.

You know your way round so please make yourself at home - we have challenges, a weigh in thread that will run over the holidays for accountability and a chat thread.
Chair exercise could be useful if you get a bad winter - but I hope you still use that bicycle!!

I'm that bad penny, which keeps coming back. This time I hope to do better, keep up with daily challenges, and get back to where I was this time last year. I'm from the UK, and although can do other exercises and not just chair ones, the chair exercises are also great and can be as challenging.

emoticon from Colorado Springs! I am here because I have fibromyalgia. Some days I don't get exercise in. This seems like a great opportunity to do something and have support at the same time.

I look forward to meeting you all. emoticon

I hate to tell you but unless you have joined that team goal and you fill in the number of steps you record every day - in the little box that you get to by going to "other goals" in the My Trackers drop down menu - it won't be added to the team goals!!

Remember Wendi - I had to learn once - aeons ago!! emoticon

EMMABE1. I did have to move my Wi-Fi dongle to the front of my tower in order for the Sparkpeople dongle to work. This was suggested by a computer whiz guy I know......not my idea, for sure! You "techie" types are worshipped by people like me.....HeeHee! I have an auxiliary port that would not support both the Wi-Fi and the Dongle (I guess). Anyway, I found another site where I can have some of my activities logged so hopefully, they will sync over to this group so that you can count them. This exercise is certainly confounding me and much more difficult than I had anticipated.....:( You, Emmabe1, have been super in helping me....Thank You!!!

I had a lightbulb moment!!
I suddenly thought - have you any other dongles sinced to your computer?? (keyboard, mouse, smartphone???) If so its possible one of them is clashing with the wi-fi waves from your tracker. There are millions of things that send out signels that are found in the normal house - and it only takes onme to cut accross the waves from somerthing else and tracking stops (hence the red dongle light)
To locate which one it could be is hard - maybe start by unplugging any other dongles except the Spark one (wi-fi dongles) in your computer and see if that fixes it - if so plug them back one at a time and see which oine causes problems.
Then try swapping the problem dongle top another USB socket - it will take you time to do this fully - as you need to leave the computer to recognise the changed situation between each change.
Have fun!!

The way Sparks says to wear it is:
The shoe is going to be the most accurate place for wearing the Spark. Below are some tips for placement that you may find helpful:

- If you wear on your shoe, make sure it is flat on your laces and parallel to ground with the open end of the clip pointing towards the toe. Also make sure it is firmly clipped and not flopping around - we find its best to try to get it through at least 2-3 laces (which really snugs it down).

-If wearing on your bra, try with clip to the skin and the tracker to the outside. If that doesnít work, try wearing it on the cross strap (not the shoulder strap) towards the side of the body near the underarm. We have seen this give better results for some body types as it helps to hold the tracker securely to the body. But we would still recommend trying it on the shoe or waist first if possible.

- If you wear on your waist, make sure the open end of the clip is pointing towards the ground. Also try to wear as close the outside of your hip as possible.

EMMABE1....I'm not sure how to reply to this. I'm still trying to make mine work but I'm just not sure it is. The dongle did stay green all day yesterday and I was not able to do my exercises. I will try to do it all today. I just want to be sure the thing works ,but from what you say, it is very unreliable? I definitely want my minor readings to be added to the team goals....how can I know if they are? I keep my tracker on my bra so the steps should be registering.

Hi,
I rejoined this team yesterday (i think) and rejoined SP last week after being more active here around 18 months ago. I'm from Australia and have a lot of weight to lose ... (hmm I don't want it back though!). I've done some of the chair exercises here before and they were a great encouragement to me; also doing some walking for exercise and trying to build up slowly (last time I went too fast resulting in a bunch of injuries). Glad to be here again; and thankful for all the time and help I know the team leaders here provide

I guess this is the Spark tracker?? Assuming that - you are best going back to the Sparks Tech team - there may be a fault in yours.
You can return them for a refund in the first 2 weeks.
I had a thoiught - is the dongle plugged directly into a USB socket in your computer? If its in an adapter or splitter - it probably wont work - I had to chage all my USB things about to plug mine in direct but the dongle works now - the bit on me only picks up some of my steps!! LOL!!

HI EMMABE......Not only am I new, but I'm having a heck of a time coordinating my tracker and the goals. First of all, my dongle only works sometimes.....I was working with the "help" staff to fix this and thought I had, but today I did 20 minutes of aerobic chair exercises and nothing has shown up. When I checked the dongle, it had no color and none of my steps or calories, etc. have posted. I have also satisfied all my goals for the last three days and nothing has registered. Has anyone else had this problem? I am definitely NOT techie so any non-techie help is appreciated......Thank you. I am trying to be a responsible member of this group!!!

You will find many exercises in the resources of this team - check the links on your Welcome to Chair exercise team Sparkmail - many of us have osteoarthitis in our knees and find that exercising does help. Check out the playlist in the Chair Exercise Video channel on knee strengthening exercises.

There are many other exercise videos there that will help too

Unfortunately when we are unwell for a time and we neglect exercise our muscles suffer very quickly and then it takes a very long time to get back the same level of mobility again.

I'm pretty much like you, Peggy. only a bit older....76. I do have Osteoarthritis of the knees and so I'm relegated to using the chair. I am just joining this team to see if it will get me going again. Have been ill for a couple of months and not doing my exercises like I should. I am so thankful for the SparkPeople sites.....they really help me, a lot!

I am Peggy & from Colorado. I am 67 years old & have osteoarthritis in both knees so I am in pain most of the time. I will be retiring the last of Oct. since I can barely do my job any longer. It is hard doing most exercises. I have a cat & dog to keep me company since my husband passed away from cancer July 3, 2013.

Hi Team,
this is Marie joining you.
I'm so glad I found this team emoticon

Being on Spark for quite a while I often thought that doing exercise was something that I could accomplish through will-power and training. But I have to admit, that due to some back issues (scoliosis) in combination with being overweight sometimes I am almost unable to move at all, even getting up from a chair can be a major challenge.

I am very grateful for all the resources you have compiled!

REJOINING, OLD MEMBER

Hi, I'm Vicki and I'm 58 years old. Salt has always been hard for me to cut back on but due to my husbands severely damaged heart he has to cut back to no more than 2000 grams a day and 1200 calories a day. So I'm following the same plan he's doing to make it easier on both of us. Right now our goals are to eat in a much healthier fashion and to lose 60 lbs over the next 12 months.
Due to hubby's health he can't do a lot of walking but can do some chair exercises so I'm hoping this team will help me and I can help him more to get stronger and healthier.

Hi Everyone,
My name is Mehgan and I live in Minnesota(or in a few months it will be MinneSNOWta), its a beautiful sunny 70 degree day here and the beginning of Minnesota Vikings football season.
I just received my lab results and my blood sugar is high so I need to get more labs to check for diabetes. It is not a shock to me, but it shook me enough to really think about getting serious about my weight NOW, today, this minute. I have been on SparkPeople for a while and love it but have not had any consistency with weight loss. I have not gained any weight for over a year and that is a plus for me, so I still have lost the 20 pounds I lost over a year ago.
I have been making small changes and better food choices. My work schedule tends to be my sabotage, so I am going to work on some basic meal planning especially for the work days that make healthy eating harder for me.
I am 40 years old, divorced for 7 years and no regrets there but am still learning to accept myself and treat myself kindly. My self worth defnitely led to the kind of men I dated/marry, that was a tough realization I had this year, but definitely a needed one. I have no children but I have 3 awesome cats. :)
Feel free to add me as a SparkFriend, I definitely need the encouragement and support. And will provide that back to you too of course!
Meg

Hi Everyone emoticon - I've been a SP member for years but just found this team. I read through most of the new member posts and was touched by how many of us struggle with chronic pain and conditions that prevent us from exercising in the "usual" ways. I have been very blessed in my life because I've survived a couple of life-threatening events but my issue now is severe arthritis in my hips. emoticon

In 2011, I feel flat on my back while washing my tile floor. It felt like my whole body just exploded when I hit that tile. My left arm was under me and so that wrist was broken. It was about 3 months after that fall that I started noticing more and more pain in my right hip. I have since read that having a traumatic injury can cause arthritis to set in very quickly, and I really believe that's exactly what happened to me. My right hip gives me horrific pain and I get sciatic nerve flare ups that make the pain excruciating at times. I was told that exercise is good in moderation by both my primary physician and the orthopedic doctor. However, they added the "don't overdo it" and the "stop as soon as you feel any pain" clauses. I was also told by the orthopedic doc not to do anything that required twisting. That doesn't leave much in the way of exercises emoticon I am, again, blessed because I have access to a couple of great walking pools and I do get in and do 30-45 minutes of water walking 2-3 times each week. Living in Arizona, I can use the outdoor pools during most the fall months but I need to find some other way to get exercise when it's too cold for the pool. I use aqua weights in the pool too so that gives my arms a workout. Chair exercise sounds like it might be a great option for me and a way for me to get even more exercise. I hope, with the help of the Lord, to get a hip replacement in 2015 because I'm just tired of being in pain all the time. I've gotten 2 flouro-guided hip injections, which are very painful and have to be done at the hospital, but they are just a "band aid" and not a permanent fix. The first injection gave me relief that lasted almost 6 months. I got a second injection on Aug 1st and it took three weeks to even start giving me any relief. I am doing fairly well right now but after water walking, shopping, house cleaning, etc I start feeling some pain and discomfort.

In closing - and I've been very long-winded emoticon - I will keep all of you in my prayers and I look forward to any exercise tips you can share. emoticon

I joined awhile back, but I think I may have forgotten to introduce myself. I'm Rhonda. I was exercising on my feet pretty well until last December. Long story short I was diagnosed with Stage II Osteoarthritis. Last week I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and I've had MS for many years. I hear really good things about this team.

Just joined the team after seeing the AWESOME August newsletter. I'm becoming more and more limited in my mobility after a few battles with cancer, and apparently another on the way. Having seated exercises that I can do safely is exactly what I need to keep me going!

Hi everyone. I'm Vickey and I'm a 56 year old wife, mother and grandmother. I'm not new to this team but I have not been active in over a year so I figured it would be good to reintroduce myself. I recently spent a week in the hospital that has made me reevaluate my life and what I need to do to get and stay healthy. I have degenerative joint disease, severe osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, thoracic outlet syndrome, neuropathy, diabetes, high blood pressure and now have gastritis and ulcerative lesions in my stomach resulting from h-pylori and stress which all give me more than enough reasons to get my health back on track. Because of the recent problems with my stomach I am off all my anti-inflammatory meds so my joints and muscles are giving me a really rough time making moving even harder although I'm pushing myself to do so.

Thanks for allowing me to come back and be part of this team.
