emoticon emoticon Hi everyone my name is Dee from Florida, I have some limitations due to a stroke 2013 and I have PAD....the chair exercises so far are the best. I need some motivation some days because I get tired of not being able to move the way I want to.

I have limited mobility due to the need for knee surgery which they will not consider until I lose 100 pounds, so that is why I am here. I am a retired teacher, 66 years old with 2 children and 5 grandchildren. I used to enjoy hiking and horseback riding, but I cannot do either one.

goal is to be able to walk again

Hi, I'm Chandler. I've been sedentary for a while, so I enjoy the chair exercises on this page. I also found two chair yoga videos that I really enjoy. Don't know what else to say. Nice to meet you all!

Not really new, just returning. I left all of my teams to concentrate on ending the BLC round. I am not joining the next round of BLC because I am scheduled for the knee surgery at the end of May. I haven't been exercising ad need to get back to doing something consistently. So, back in the fold.

Hi Joan
Good to see you here. Thereare many chair exercise videos in the chair exercise Youtube channel - click on the team picture on the main team page - they are for all levels of mobility - even some you can do in bed.
You will need to find exercises that are suitable for you according to your doctors instructions - and you may find it easier to mdo some exercise twice in a day - doing a bit less each time - than doing it all in one go and getting tired and sore.
The Chair Exercises Resources thread also has many links and ideas of places that you can find chair exercise - scroll down to read them all.
REmember its not necessary to work hard especialy when you start - many of the more gentle exercises will do just as much good for you!!

Hi - I'm new to this team. I'm on another one but I have become disabled since originally joining and I can no longer exercise how I used to. I've been trying some of the chair exercises and find it hard to do some of them, so I've just been doing the best I can.

I look forward to meeting everyone. Thanks Ann for the warm welcome. emoticon

hi new to this team although I have been a member of Sparks for about 3 1/2 years. As I have a number of medical issues and sometimes do not feel well enough to exercise standing up, I feel this team will help me when this happens and I will be more inspired to sit down to exercise.

Hello there everyone,
This is my 4th day with ParkPeople. There is just SO much to read & do here it's hard to get it all in. But I love it.
I am 56 years and pretty much home bound. I need to lose weight so badly, it will make such a difference in my life. One of my biggest obstacles is my lack of mobility. Just to give you an idea of where I stand is after having back surgery instead of being better off now I am using a rollator/walker. I can only stand 5-10 minutes at a time without having severe back pain & the feeling that my legs are going to give out, so I hurry to find a seat some place, and in truth my legs are weak. MY knees are in bad shape where they say I need surgery on those. (eh eh, not after the back! no way!) And I have COPD which leaves my coughing & breathless. So I want to look into chair exercising & also maybe bed yoga I heard someone mention on one of the message boards. So here I am!
Newmoon I see where you listed a couple of links I plan to check out after I finish with my introductions. Thank you. Look forward to hearing from the team members.

I'm sure you will find a variety of things to try between the videos here on Sparkpeople as well as the other sources posted.

Always check with your Dr before starting anything new.

Feel free to post a thread here looking specifically for exercise for quads because the members here are really helpful.

WELCOME!!!

Hi, I am Bob and some of you may know me from other teams, but I have lived a life not worrying about my weight and now as I am approaching my golden years, my body is giving out. I have two knees that need replacement but they won't do it until I drop at least 100 lbs. I started back here in July after a long hiatus, and just today I reached a 50 lbs weight loss. Being the impatient sort, I have been persuing a sleeve gastrectomy, and it is finally taking place tomorrow. One of the main ways this surgery is going to benefit me is by exercise, and until I get my knees replaced, I thought I would try the chair exercises as soon as the surgeon releases me, so I will be looking in to them over the next couple of weeks.

I try to remember that God never gives me more than I can handle! This gets me through the rough times!

Hello everyone! I'm AmaZing and I'm new to this team but not sparkpeople. I've been on SP since Dec 2007.
I have gained a ton of weight which recovering from back surgery. I'm still not 100% but I am working on getting stronger everyday. Before the surgery I was an extremely active person and worked with youth as a Physical Education Specialist. I hope to do away with both my wheelchair and cane.

Hi I dropped off the wagon for a long time because my ability to walk and breathe became so diminished. If I walk for more than 2 minutes my back hurts so bad that I have to sit for 5 mins or more.

I can walk 100 steps at a time and that's really difficult right now but I'm trying to get up to a total of 800 steps a day.

I chair dance and if the music gets to me I can get up and dance for 2 mins at a time. Have to use my walker while I stand to dance but I feel a lot better after.

Oh I have lymphedema and legs and arms are all swollen but still want to get more energy from more movement.

Hello Sparkfriends. My name is Janel. I have been on SP for some time now and I had been doing good exercising- very active and great with nutrition but then something happened. I hurt myself at work. Its been 2 weeks and my back still aches. I am going to Physical therapy. They are unsure what is wrong with my back. I can barely use the hand bike. I have had some good days this week. I am 43 and married to Paul. I have 4 sons. I am trying to really watch the nutrition since strenuous activity is out now. Looking for pointers. Thanks!

Janelen

Hi! My Name is Francie. There are probably a few on here that I am on other teams with. I am 63 yr old retired teacher and live in NE Arkansas (Jonesboro). I have lupus that affects my joints a bunch. I am also dealing with a pulled muscle and a not so great right knee. So doing a lot of what I call "go-get 'em " exercise is not always an option for me. I do try to walk as much as possible so I'm hoping to learn some things here that I can use when my joints just don't want to cooperate.

Hi to all, my name is Dari. I'm 54 years and have a couple of disabilities and chair exercise works well for me. I also try to walk. I'm hoping this will encourage me to exercise daily.

Hi
I am Paula and I was a member of this team a while back and have returned.
I have a lot of back pain and need to start over with exercise that I can do which is frustrating as I was doing well and now have to start over with baby steps.
See my Blog entry on my Sparkpage www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_
individual.asp?blog_id=5601371

So I want to be part of the team again and get the support and encouragement I need.
I saw the Tasmania Virtual walk is it too late to join in with that?

I have had to use a walker for about 4 years. I have back problems and it eases the pain to use a walker. I can't stand still for any length of time. When I stand still I break out in a cold sweat and have alot of pain in my back. I am able to walk with the walker so I can get exercise, but can't do typical strength and cardio exercises. The chair exercises are great. I really love them. It gives me the capability of doing things I normally would not be able to do. I use them consistently in the exercise routine I have established. I am 65 and live in a retirement complex so I have long halls that I can walk in without too much stress on my back. So between the walking and chair exercises I get my walking, cardio and strength exercises. I was so glad to have found a group that has some of the issues I have with mobility.

Hi everyone. I am not new to the team having joined a few years ago but haven't really been active. I am hoping to turn that around this year and really achieve my goal. Have made a start with the trek to Tassie and 5 mins of the balance and stretching exercise video.

Hello all from the frozen North of Saskatchewan Canada! (North of Montana)
My whole life has been challenged by health issues, the worst being a diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 6.5. But I always loved to exercise any time I wasn't having a flare or surgery (35 operations and counting) I do prefer to go to a gym, at one time aquafit was my go to exercise, but not being able to drive I had to resort to workouts in my home. The first DVD's I purchased off the store shelves were all Kathy Smith and her walking one is my favorite as well as her cardio boxing and kickboxing. Our winters are long and hard so I workout at home more often than not. I also bought and loved the Zumba Exhilarate series.
Even with five artificial joints, there wasn't too much I couldn't do, except floor exercises. I loved high impact, high energy workouts the most. But life has thrown me a monkey wrench once again and I had a serious compound fracture of my right arm. Turned out my two year old elbow replacement was already failing and that there was almost no bone mass left in my right humerus! So not only I am facing very serious surgery to correct this, I risk losing the use of my arm if not correctable, or losing it altogether if an infection sets in. So I did my first workout since the surgery to fix the compound Fracture my Kathy Smith Power Walk to Lose Weight Matrix Method. My favorite DVD's, the kickboxing ones will not be possible, but will see if I can modify my other ones..
I have been maintaining my weight for four years and don't want to regain it.
Never give up!

I go to Curves too - but find I need extra - chair exercise is great to fill in the aerobic exercise that we need - if you are like me - I find that the recovery boards are hard on my knees - so the chair exercise fills the spot nicely!! At present thougfh I am able to swim (its our summer!!) and that is great too - but soon enough I'll be back to chair exercise through the cooler months.
Please look round the team and join in the threads - and make yourself at home.

Hi everyone. My name is Elayne and I am on disability for my asthma/copd and have chronic back pain due to spinal stenosis, arthritis throughout my body and fibromyalgia. I use a cane if I have to walk any distance and my walker when I know I'll be walking all over creation!

Yup - ice skating can be dangerous!! Its fun too though!!
It sounds like you need to get back to tracking your foods, drinking enough water and if you look through the Chair Exercise YouTube Channel there is a playlist there with longer aerobic video chair exercises.

My name is Carolyn; I've lost over 100 pounds in the past year.

My problem is that just before Christmas, I twisted my knee while ice skating (whoops!) and am not able to do all the activities that I am used to - running, spin class, Zumba, etc. - as I recover. I don't want to go back to being unhealthy (my healthy eating habits slipped over the holidays) and inactive, and I want to do what I can to make recovery good. I'm excited to learn some exercises I can do while off my knee!

Hi! I am living in Iowa, I do not drive (no ability!) and now live in a tiny house in the country, DH's idea. In the winter exercise in our two over stuffed main rooms is challenging so want to do the chair exercises which seems like a viable thing for lack of space and leg problems.

New year, new goals!

Hi! I'm Julie from central Oklahoma. I currently have a knee injury (we're not sure how severe yet--possibly just a tendon or ligament issue or could be something torn). I was trying to figure out how I was still going to work out when I came across this team. I'm glad to be a part of it and hope to learn more about chair workouts.

Hi, I'm Bonnie, a 61 year old from Central PA. I was diagnosed with coronary microvascular dysfunction this past year and everything I try to do sets off angina chest pain and shortness of breath. I have already lost 55 pounds, but am finding I can't exercise much now and I still have a lot to lose. I heard about this team and the chair exercises and thought I would try. I am hoping I can at least do some of the workouts to help lose weight and regulate my blood pressure. I am on a low sodium diet and restricted fluid intake because of severe edema so I really need to be careful. But doctor still tells me to exercise. LOL! So I will try!

emoticon I have so enjoyed reading your posts, visiting the web page and checking it all out, this team is super together..nice..

Hi and glad all the new people are here and new with me too! I go by Kat, husbands called me that for ever, so it stuck, and I do love cats, have 5 (they are all one family). My husband and son and our herd of cats live in Reno, NV., which we love for its beauty and weather.

I joined SP in 2008 then left in 2009 and now am back. This site has so much to offer me, video's of seated exercises, diet plans for my needs, accountability, which I need, and setting goals. I read a lot of the articles here, they tell so much.

I have a chronic condition that is slowly winding down, so there are new health issues to address and new physical conditions to learn to live with. Loving my life, as it is, I hold on, laugh a lot, cry sometimes, sleep way to much but I get up, do what exercises I can that day, eat what I can, and do one thing that is positive, it is usually more, but my goal is one per day. When I reach out to another and listen to their needs, I can come out of Kat's body and focus on the other person, it is healing for both sides.

I am glad I found this team....awesome and I plan on being an active member, am just fighting off pneumonia and after effects of antibiotics but all that too shall pass!

See you all on the boards!

Been there, done that and I can testify up a storm of my successes. However, changing what we do in order to lose weight and get fit from something we are doing just now to a life time pattern = life style, means looking at our fear of change.

Motivation will get us started. Inspiration will carry us all the way if we let go of the fear of change. Not just in words, but in deeds. Which means continuing on being good to ourselves and every time we want to say "to hell with it" we recognize that we simply are afraid of change. Karen, you hit the nail on the head - I'm definitely hard on myself. It's true that I've done a lot of things right in the last three years and made a lot of progress. But right now I'm looking at my blood sugar going up and yet not doing enough exercise to keep it down. When I got it down to normal last spring I felt so victorious, but now I'm wondering if I have the motivation it takes to keep doing what needs to be done over the long run. I don't want to go on meds, that's the big thing hanging over me, and yet I went into some kind of rebellious mode this week and didn't exercise for a solid 7 days, and overate on two of them. I'm hoping that joining this group and just talking about it will help. I guess I'm just in a little slump.

Welcome to the team, Kate. I don't know why you are judging yourself so harshly. Are you comparing yourself to someone else or perhaps an ideal you? It takes time. You are doing great with what you are doing. And, yes, up the stakes incrementally and consistently.

For the knees, have you tried "oil pulling"? Look it up on Youtube. I have no problems with that myself but many have had wonderful results with the aforementioned practice.

Karen

Hi, I'm Kate in Ohio. I'm 63 and still working full time.

I injured both knees on separate occasions in my 40's, and now they ache. My doctor told me not to do aerobics using the legs more often than every other day, and many of the aerobics I've tried - cycle, eliptical, treadmill, Richard Simmons - seem to make my knees worse even if I do them occasionally. So my main exercise in good weather is brisk walking, which I love.

But now it's winter and it's a challenge. I have a great chair exercise tape I found on Amazon, Chair Aerobics for Everyone with Nikki Glazer. But I'm having a hard time getting myself to exercise often enough, and I think it would help to mix it up with other tapes. So here I am.

I tested in A1C diabetic range 6.8 a year ago, then got it down to 5.7 through diet changes and exercise, but now it's crept back up into prediabetic and I know the only way I can control this is through consistent exercise, so I'm joining the 15 minutes a day goal. I go to the gym on Saturday or Sunday and do a good long strength-training workout on the Universal machines. But in the evenings after work, when it's cold and dark, all I want to do is change into my flannel nightgown and curl up on the couch. Really having trouble with this right now.

Thank you my dear Betty. and a very warm welcome to you too.

I get a physio therapist who comes in twice a week for me and DH. I do most of my exercises in bed or on the chair. Just a couple standing and holding on to a bar. But yes it has decreased the stiffness in my muscles and I did try to follow some on youtube which my DGGS logged into. But with my hearing issue I couldn't follow too much. DH can't hear at all. I can't follow too much without concentrating even with my hearing aid. So got my physio to suggest a couple after checking the video. Hope it works for me.
