I just heard some good advice yesterday--instead of denying oneself of anything and trying to stick to a strick "diet", adopt the "mostly, sometimes, occaisionally" attitude. Mostly make healthy food choices, sometimes slip in a little treat and occaisionally splurge a little. That sounds reasonable to me! Throw in good water consumption and exercise, and away we go!

I, too, love chocolate. I haven't yet met a chocolate treat that I didn't like! Denying myself chocolate doesn't help. It just makes me crave it more.

Some strategies that have helped me learn to live with chocolate include the following:

1. Use your freezer. Freeze large amounts of chocolate (e.g., those gift boxes full of it) and eat one piece at a time. This takes a lot longer to consume, esp. since you have to wait for it to thaw out. No fair using the microwave to soften it up.

2. When faced with a wide assortment of yummy sweets, pick a SAMPLE of your three favorites. Don't waste calories on something you might like.

3. Eat half whenever possible. This will often satisfy your craving for sweets, but keep you in your calories range.

4. Always drink lots of water with chocolate. The combination will fill you up fast.

As for exercise, if you suffer through the first few minutes, you'll finish your workout. It's only hard the first 5-7 minutes. Then you're committed and won't stop.

Good luck!

I've been trying to increase my water (6 glasses so far today) and trying to eat at least 3 fruits and 1 veggie per day. I only eat whole grain bread and cereal, drink skim milk, etc. I think I have a pretty good start, I just need to take the next step.

My biggest problem is that I have NO WILLPOWER over chocolate. emoticon

And I need to start exercising. emoticon

I'm also new to the program. It takes a lot of work to get started on something like this! The more support the better!

I have thyroid issues which makes weight loss more difficult, but not impossible!

Hang in there! We can do it!

Congratulations, Tracyfin, on quitting smoking!!!

Your family is beautiful.

Your story sounds familiar to me...Easy to lose weight then we turn 40! I complicated my weight loss efforts by having a baby that year. Now, the weight has stuck around way too long.

It is harder to lose weight in our 40s, but it can be done. It just takes a lot longer. Stick with your exercise program; don't starve yourself; and take your vitamins. Realize we're in this for the long haul.

Good luck!

Well Tracy; let's see...you can start by drinking at least 8 full glasses of water every day (water is a great diuretic!). Then, try to eat a good, healthy breakfast (don't skip it). Also, eat several small meals during the day - this should kick-off your stalling metabolism. Avoid sweets in everything, no sodas, no regular juices (only diet ones - Crystal Light beverages are good). Change to Splenda for a sweetener. Use low sodium salt for cooking (high sodium diets will make you retain water).
Now for the exercise portion: 40 minutes of cardio three times per week (stationary bike, threadmill, walking, jogging, etc). If possible, do weights three times also. I joined a small group for exercises at a local gym for about six months - I used it to learn proper weight lifting and exercise techniques which I can apply now at home and save the $$$.
And last but not least, set your mind to it. Amazingly our bodies respond to our brain stimuli and if you are constantly thinking you are gaining weight, then you'll gain weight even if you don't eat anything! Read 'The Secret' by Rhonda Byrne, it will help (see the DVD if you don't have time to read).
Well Tracy, I believe this is all I can tell you for now. It is hard but not impossible. Do it for you and no one else; you deserve it!
Good luck and God bless...
Jose Maria

I turned 40 in August. I have two active teenagers and work full-time outside the home.

I've never had a weight problem until the last few years. I weighed 112 when I got married 21 years ago, 125 after two babies, and now... pushing 160!!! What happened?

I have gained 10 pounds just over the last six months. Life got crazy over the summer and my eating and exercise were the first things to suffer.

I know I need to get off my butt and start exercising again, but I just can't make myself do it. I'm going to have my thyroid checked to see if that is part of the problem. Most of the problem is age, gravity and appetite.

Any words of wisdom?
