Just joined. I have a little over 50 lbs to lose to get healthier than I am now and I know walking is the best exercise I can do at this time. I have RA of the spine so some days it's hard to get moving but I'll do the best I can.

I've been on spark for a while and have been walking since 8mos . Dad said I was to fat to crawl, so had to walk to avoid rug burn. W

Lost over 100lbs almost 5yrs ago, I simply started walking and then slowly progressed. To harder workouts.m Gained 30lbs bk in short time a yr ago but quickly took that off. W running and workouts like insanity.

I won't say I love excercise per say but I do love the challenge and seeing what my body can do. As I said I started walking and that grew to jogging and then running. Unfortunetly I began having knee issues last summer and by fall it quit on me. It took a lot of time but one day it hit me that I can still walk and I should be grateful for that. So I am. I hike or power walk almost daily and am finding that it can be just as rewarding as running.....with less pain!

I work part time, otherwise I stay home w my five yr old son.

Hi Everyone,
I have been a brisk outside walker for many years; but had foot surgery last year. So I just started to get back into my walking routine slowly last month. I am happy that I found this team and love the title. Looking forward to being a part of this team.

I may not be new to Sparkpeople, but I am definitely new to exercise. I just wanted to say hi and hopefully gain the motivation to get healthy. This is a struggle for me, but I'm really trying. I've had excuse after excuse in the past and I don't want to make anymore excuses. My doctor told me walking is the best place to start, so I'm going to try to make it a habit. I hope I'm successful this time.

I have a goal to run again (sometime in my lifetime!) But since I'm 50 and overweight it's best to protect my precious knees and WALK until I lose or don't run. But it's my dream
to emoticon !

So I'm walking before work on days when I've been motivated to do so.. I live in the rainy climate of the Willamette Valley of Oregon and some mornings this is literally almost impossible (atleast if I were to drive to work first and then walk) as I would be soaked!

Anyhow, I've walked through our recent snow storm emoticon and I've walked to the grocery store, the post office and to the pharmacy. I've pretty much been a walking fool as of late.

Welcome JCrow4,
First congratulations on your marriage. So glad you are enjoying walking for exercise. I walk for exercise and emotional health. I use a Fitbit pedometer to keep me motivated. My goal is 10,000 steps per day. If by 4:30 PM I am under I get moving. I have good rain gear with reflective tape when out in the evening. On last tip, when the heavy rain and snow keeps me indoors I use Leslie Sansone's walk at home DVD's. Looking forward to sharing with you and the group.

Hi, my name is Jamie and I am new to this forum, but not new to sparkpeople. I decided to start walking to get in shape for my honeymoon in New Orleans this year. My husband and I signed up for a handful of walking tours in the French Quarter and Garden District, and I figured that I needed to get in shape to do those. So I started walking every other day around my neighborhood. Well, we just got back from our honeymoon, which I was more than prepared for, and I realized I didn't want to just stop walking. Our neighborhood has some really magnificent trees and landscaping; I couldn't bear to stay indoors and miss the fall colors!

I want to stay motivated to keep walking, and also get some tips and tricks from experienced outdoor walkers about walking in all kinds of weather so I decided to try this forum. :)

Hi there fellow walkers, I am new to this group. I am a walker, mostly forest trails. I love the fresh air, walking on spongy pine duff and grade changes going up and down hills. I live in Western Oregon with husband, 2 dogs and 2 cats. My goals are to live a healthy lifestyle and as a result reach my body type weight range. Yes range, I decided to set a 5 lb goal weight range to avoid stressing over a 2-3 lbs gain.

I hope this is an active group and look forward to learning and sharing with you.

Good morning everyone!

I found this site and thought it would be a great fit. I recently tried to to to the walk/jog challenge, but my knee would not work with me, so I am back to walking. This works very well for me because you can always fit some walking in. My mother bought me walking shoes as an early b-day present, and I have a Spark Tracker, so her goes nothing :-)

Little about me; I live in Ca, north of San Francisco. I'm going to be 29 on Nov. 15, married but no kids. Wish I had a dog to walk, but we can't have a dog where we live. Besides, I don't think Parsley(my puddy cat) would like a dog friend very much emoticon

My goal right now is to try and walk 6,000 steps a day. I want to work my way up to 10,000 but 6,000 is good for me right now. emoticon

Hi, my name is Samantha and I am 32 years old. I enjoy WATP workouts and I do a different walk six days a week and I add bootcamp dvds which are mostly strength training based on 3 of these days.

My starting weight was 104kg (229 pounds) and I am now down to 89kg (196 pounds). My goal is to be at 80kg (176 pounds) by the end of the year.

One of my new gols is to participate more in the community and I just created my Spark page yesterday. I am looking for accountability buddies who enjoy walking as their go to exercise.

I can do it!

Hi! I just joined this group this am. I walk almost everyday for better health. My favorite walks are "destination" walks such as along the river or on the beach. I'm 37 and is using walking to leave behind a lot of extra weight and bad habits. Good health to all and enjoy your walk today.

Day by day, one choice at a time.

I'm new on SparkPeople. I used to walk for my health all the time - before I gained this weight. I tore my meniscus in my knee almost 10 years ago and that put a stop to my walking and I started gaining weight. I had my knee scoped and was told it was bone-on-bone - no cartilage left. It took me a very long time to be able to walk without pain and limping, and I've got arthritis in that knee now.

Nevertheless, I'm giving it another try because I've got to lose this weight. I'm 53 years old and work full time. I'm enjoying this site - I like planning my food and I like how I feel when I eat "clean".

Would like some motivation buddies! Come visit my Spark Page.

Hi Everyone!
I'm Jackie from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but live in Abruzzo Italy now. I have started walking recently and have already made improvements in the distance I can walk....from nothing to something anyway.
I want walking to be my main exercise for now, as it is easier on my aging, big body. Then as I lose and become more fit ( hopefully) I can add other exercise.
Good luck to everybody in their walking program!

Hi, new here! I'm in my late 58's and have 3 sons, 3 beautiful Daughter in Laws and 12 grandchildren. I live on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri from about March through early December and then head to Tucson, Arizona for the winters (until we can sell our house there). I retired about 5 years ago and just after we bought our retirement home the bottom fell out of the market and we have been unable to sell the Tucson house so we go back and forth. Praying this is the winter we sell it!

I am not a speedy "loser" by any means...I'm the turtle, dropping a bit here and a bit there. I was down about 15 pounds but became very sick with pneumonia and ended up in the hospital twice in a month this past Spring. So, being down for so long and so many steroids put it all back on and then some...so I'm picking away a bit at a time! Looking for some support and friendship on this journey to a much healthier me!

Hi Team! My name is Glenzetta, I live in Colorado. I love walking, I generally walk with my niece and or my sister. We walk more in the summer than the winter, it can get pretty cold and snowy here. Sometimes its like spring in the winter and on those days we walk. I'm new to the team, but not to sparks! emoticon

Klutzy68 -- You could try Turbo Jam. They have three different workouts and a strength training workout. The shortest workout is 20 minutes with the longest at 45 minutes. You can do it at regular intensity or modify it for lower intensity. I love it!! I have been doing it for the last 5 years.

Hello! emoticon I returned to spark a while back and just saw this team. Thought I'd join in as I love to walk. Me & my Fitbit now do 12,000-17,000 steps daily and it has been a wonderful focus for me. Glad to meet all of you.

Hi all! I just noticed this team and joined right away. I'm 65, a reforming couch potato, and I live in western Mass. I joined SP two weeks ago and started walking most days. I kinda want to do a 5K, which shocks me! I'm in the 5K prep group, which advocates doing alternate training, so I'm looking for something besides walking too. BUT I need a regular kick in the butt to get it off the couch, so here I am! I tried Zumba gold; it was a bit much so I'm still looking and would love suggestions. Possibly weight training? Whatever I do needs to be in-home. I have seen lots of videos on Youtube. Do you have a favorite on there?

Trying to live binge-free.

Good morning everyone & Happy Easter - I am brand new to this team but have been a Spark member for a few years. I am a 58 year old female, I live in PA with my hubby and currently I am unemployed.

I have arthiritis so my walking consists of Leslie Sansone walking tapes/dvds indoors. I use to walk about 5 miles a day 8 or 9 years ago but the arthiritis has stopped me from doing that. I have hip issues so I don't walk well - doing the workouts help me because I am on level flooring and don't have to worry about uneven surfaces.

I hope I will be able to do what is needed of me for this team. I usually do 2 miles (30 min) or 3 miles (45 min) per day depending on how I feel. I can do 4 miles (almost 60 min) but not too often.

I need encourgement now to do the right thing by eating better and walking everyday (or almost everyday). thanks for allowing me to "talk" to anyone that reads this. Have a wonderful and blessed day.

Hi Spark Friends. My name is Angela I have been a SP member all of two day's and enjoying the support, it's like I have a personal buddy with me along my journey. Now, I am overweight, I used to be fit and healthy but have become a couch potato and piled the poinds on.

I have now decided enough is enough and I have to do something about it, hence here I am. I have found on here the most inspirational of people whom are sharing my journey and we are spurring each other on. Which is such a big plus. I am excited and optomistic and look forward to getting to know some of you. Have a fantastic week ahead ladies emoticon emoticon

Let's get aquainted.
I'm Vicki and I'm 56 years old.
I got rid of the scale and am working to drop inches. I'm going to the fitness center 3 times a week and working out at home 3 days. I rest up on Sundays.
My goal is to reclaim my health and over time go from a 3XL down to a size Large.

Welcome Cindi.
I too am waiting for warmer weather to get outside and walk. I belong to a gym, but my work achedule is so variable that it's hard to get there. I also like walking outside a lot better than a treadmill.
Good luck and remember, we're here to help.

I've been on SP since 2008, but I just discovered this team. I love to walk. Unfortunately, I live in New Hampshire, so it's walking on the treadmill at the gym. I've been rather lax this year because my work schedule has been so crazy. I am a home health aide and although I have some regular clients, I never know when I'll be called. This week I have been busy all day every day. I'm really looking forward to the roads being clear and then I can be a little more spontaneous with my walking. I did do a mile last week when I left my keys in the car. It was all uphill for the first half and I was able to do it in 20 minutes. Not bad for someone who hasn't done anything since before Christmas.

Hi All! My name is Debbie & I live in Cali in the Capital Valley.
I'm learning to love to walk. I am using my cane for my shorter walks these days, but with my longer walks I want to do, I'm going to be using my walker. The walker will allow me to sit & rest & then GO again!
I am over 200 lbs. so it makes it hard on my feet to walk without pain & pressure.
I have COPD, & respiratory issues, along with diabetic neuropathy(?) of the feet.
Since I've moved to my sister's home, I walk everyday & workout. The neighborhood is nice & quiet & fun to walk & enjoy all the older homes in this part of town.
Happy I found this team!

Be~Happy~!

Hi everyone
I am new here and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Cheryl and I joined last week but tomorrow is going to be my first official day. I am from Canada but I live and teach in South Korea. Tomorrow I am back to work after a holiday home so I plan to start the first day back with a healthier eating plan and more exercise. One of my goals is to start walking the 2 miles to work every morning. Before Christmas I was doing that walk regularly so it will be good to get back into the routine. I look forward to getting to know everyone here. emoticon

Welcome to the team! I'm out of breath, getting my last stairs, walking, etc. done before my Fit One changes at midnight.

Walking is a great way to get healthy. The picture for our team is one I took from my front porch--a half marathon. Most were running, a bunch were walking, and a few were running or jogging or walking with their babies, and one dad had his handicapped son in a running stroller for the marathon. It was awesome!

Ok, my breathing is almost normal again, so I've got to get some more water and a shower. Can't wait to get to know you and see you progress on your journey.

Hi everyone! I'm new-ish and wanted to introduce myself. I'm 34 years old, married with 2 stepchildren (12 year old girl and almost 14 year old boy). I have a bunch of weight to lose and I've been focusing on making my diet healthy, which I've done a great job with, if I can say so, but now I need to get moving. I'm pretty sedentary and I am not fit at all. I think that walking would be a great way to fix that...so here I am!

Hope you all enjoy what's left of the weekend!

Welcome! I'm glad to meet you! Working nights must be hard. Do you have a specialty in your career? emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I love walking, hiking, and I would love to run if I could. My neurosurgeon said no, not ever, don't even think about it. emoticon So I walk. Tomorrow I'm walking to the YMCA, a little over 2 miles away, to see about joining so I can walk on the treadmill, dance, row, Pilates class...so many fun things to do at the Y.

I'm working on getting this team moving, in several ways. Hope you stay around and be a part of us.

Welcome! I understand the issues with PCOS. Be certain you are eating clean, whole foods. If you can't walk for more than 20 minutes without pain, try two short walks of 15 to 20 minutes each, per day.

Strength is important to losing weight. Have you checked out the exercise videos on Spark?

Glad you are here!

Ive been a member of SP since September of 07. Ive lost some weight then gain it back. Thanks PCOS. I enjoy walking but I really need to make myself walk more. Tonight I plan to walk for 30 minutes instead of 20. I curremtly have a hip issue due to my lower back so thats a lot for me.

I think seeing the 4 pounds and realizing you need to take control is great. I am gaining like crazy, but I think it may be my meds. I bet you'll have no trouble getting rid of what you've gained. Yay for making that effort! :)

Hello! I'm not really new, I've just returned. After a wonderful holiday with family I've managed to gain 4 pounds. It doesn't sound like much, but I've worked really hard to maintain a healthy weight. I want to turn it around before old habits take over.

I'm a 53 year old retired teacher, wife and mother to 2 adult children. I taught for 31 years and realize now just how much walking I did while teaching! It's SO much tougher walking those 10,000 steps daily!!!

Kathleen, try getting rid of the crunches for now. Just do whatever walking you can and gentle yoga. Emphasis on gentle! Crunches have too much back involvement. A better option, when you are ready, is Pilates 100. If you don't know what that is, I can tell you about it.

I used to write poetry years ago. Now I write articles on gardening, health and prepping. I also edit articles for 5 websites. So I am so busy I hardly have time to breathe.

I have been trying to gradually work back into walking by doing laps around my back yard with my dog. I don't know if it's the walking, the yoga or the crunches, but my back hurts so bad I can barely move.

Seems with exercise it is always one step forward and two steps back for me. So frustrating. :(

Kathleen, I'm a writer also--poetry, and writing a book (memoir not poetry).

And being a grandmother does not make you old. Always remember: Age is of no importance unless you are a cheese. emoticon

Pam, I do the 5 Mile Fat Burning Walk when I can't get out. It is also good for my back because of the moves not used in walking. I like to mix it up, and have a collection of DVDs for exercise. and yes, I use them. emoticon

I've been a member for a while but I don't think I have ever posted her3. I'm Kathleen and I live in Arkansas right now. Newly engaged and mom to 5 kids (2 left at home). I also have one grandson and another on the way next month (and now I feel old!).

I used to walk miles every day, but my work and my health make it difficult now. I am a freelance writer and editor and it seems like I work 24/7. Add to that an un-diagnosed autoimmune disease (probably lupus) and I don't get to exercise nearly enough. Walking in the winter will be rough because I chill very easily, but I am going to try. :)

Hi I'm Tina and I live in Minnesota (originally from Texas, yep I know polar opposites!) I've been in the group a couple of months but not really interactive in it. That's changing now. I wanna start walking again as part of my exercise and get endurance and health from it. I'm enjoying seeing the new threads and hoping the group starts hopping. Thanks for pumping in some new life into it.

Rest about me is I'll be 50 in May of 2013, have 2 adorable grand boys (Christian 7 and Jackson 2) and a beautiful 26 yo daughter and SIL. I'm a 911 dispatcher and have a horrible schedule, especially to attempt to have a life!!!!!!! But I love my job, so I have to make do with life!

Looking forward to getting to know others of like mind on the walking.

Tina

We have so many new members I thought re-introducing ourselves would be a good way to get know each other a bit. Most of the long-term members are not well known to we newbies. Who starts?
