Which phase are you on?

Asparagus Soup
Pan Sauteed Mahi Mahi with a side of veggies versus the pasta
Dakota Smashed Pea and Barley Soup
Pan Sauteed Salmon with a side of veggies versus the pasta
Grilled Vegetable Salad
Hummus w/ pita (although odds are pita aren't truly ww but won't be brutal on you)
Field greens w/protein added and leave off the candied nuts
Cobb Salad
Mediteranean Salad
Classic Caeser

They do not have their nutritional data online (menu is) but it looks like some folks have gotten some of the information (ie found some via daily plate, etc).

Hi Everyone,

New to the team, but not to South Beach! I was wondering if anyone has eaten out at California Pizza Kitchen and what they ate? I am headed there monday night for my bday and besides Salad as an obvious choice..what to eat? I have the South Beach eating out book but it's not in there..

Thanks! Melissa

I had a great SB Dinner last night that was filling and satisfying! We made eggplant pizzas, where the eggplant slices are the base, then add some tomato sauce, light sprinkling of low-fat cheese, and some low fat sausage slices on top. It was delicious!

Yes the veggie bean soup should be fine. Also very lean meat like chicken breast with all fat removed, turkey with no skin, pork tenderloin with all fat removed may be tolerated as well if he insists on eating meat. But the diet should be high fiber with both medical problems.

Thanks for the info. We have noticed that when he eats meat, some nuts and for sure greasy food he has a lot of pain. My mom tried to tell him(she has diverticulitis)that meat can be very painful. So a beachy vegetable soup with beans could be eaten? I hate cooking two different meals. It gets very tempting.

This is kind of a controversial subject. First of all regarding the diverticuli............. years ago they had people with this condition avoid seeds and nuts as they thought these got stuck in the pouches but this didn't prove to be the case. The recommendation now is to eat a high fiber diet so lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds if your MD allows. This actually prevents attacks.

Now regarding diet for gallbladder disease. Some experts feel that low fat diets cause gallbladder disease. Many MD's don't recommend gallbladder diets (limit dairy, fat, spicy food, add high fiber) unless a person is in the small percentage that has chronic diarrhea after having their gallbladder removed.

The best advice is to keep weight within normal ranges, don't lose weight too fast, stay active, get adequate calories, eat breakfast, and reduce the amount of animal fats, fried foods, butter, margarine mayo.

Does anyone had an idea what I can cook that is beachy and what my hubby can eat? He is having gallbladder problems and we just found out that he has a severe case of diverticulitis. He keeps trying to eat meat even though is doc has told him not to. I have made him mashed potatoes, broth, yogurt, boiled eggs, cottage cheese. But he thinks he needs meat. Any ideas on what I can do to help him feel like he has eaten but in reality taking care of him.

Cheesecake???????? Please share.

I made the Reuben Wrap ups today for lunch(from the SB cookbook). I baked them in the oven so they would roll up. They really tasted like a reuben. My family loved them.

My husband loves the fact that I have started this South Beach because I am trying all kinds of new recipes from the book. He has a sweet tooth and I didn't make dessert before the beach too often because I didn't want my family eating unhealthy but I have been making no crust cheese cake add fruit on phase 2 and I just tried the peanut butter and jelly cookies EXCELLENT! The Mexican Custard Flan was pretty good too. We are having a blast with all the meals and desserts. My whole family goes crazy over the shepherd's pie. emoticon

Plain yogurt "usually" does NOT have sugar in the INGREDIENTS - ie you will see sugar in the nutritionals because it is milk sugar. Vanilla yogurt tends to sneak sugar in though so you would have to stick to plain. Walmart, dannon, yoplait plain fat free are all appropriate. For flavored (for p2), you will have to look for sucrolose (splenda) or aspartamine (nutrasweet) in the ingredients versus corn syrup, sugar, etc.

If your store has Yoplait, look to see if they have the Source variety. It is fat-free and sugar-free (Splenda) and comes in lots of flavours. It does have some starch, but that hasn't affected me.

I had better go look for other yogurt then. I was buying yogurt at 5 this morning. I must have really been out of it. My store only carries Dannon, yoplait and the walmart brand and activia. They all had sugar and other wrong items in them. I guess I will just drink milk with a meal. It can't hurt me to much.

F - Your yogurt doesnt meet the guidelines. By the calorie count alone, I can see it is full fat and has sugar in some form in it. You need fat free or low fat and no sugar in the ingredients.

This has been my new menu plan for Phase 2. Its very simple which helps during hectic times. I batch cook chicken, fish and the whole grains. I also keep a batch of stewed rhubarb and a Costco-sized bin of prepared salad in the fridge. I keep this checklist on my computer so I know what I can eat when I'm hungry.

Wow I took the suggestion and planned every meal and snack for today and it worked so much better. I can still add a can of V8 if I get hungry and still be in my calorie range. If someone has time can they please look at my menu and see if it looks right. I think I am finally getting hubby on board slowly. When he realizes that he is full he will be fine.

Well phase 1 and phase 2 would be completely opposite due to the grain factor. I will see if I can find you something appropriate for both.

I FOUND ONE-THAT WAS YUMMY.....IF INTERESTED HERE IT IS
ITS UNDER THE SITE WWW.SOUTHBEACHCENTURYCLUB.COM

the below is my modified version-hope you try and enjoy

Phase: 1
Preheat Oven: 350 F

1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 onion chopped ( I used black beans )
1/2 cup mushrooms chopped
chili powder (didn't use due to rotel)
1/2 can diced tomatoes (used rotel instead)
3 medium to large peppers
3 slices of part skim mozzarella

Brown 93% lean ground beef in frying pan.

Add onion, chopped mushrooms and some chili powder after meat is fully cooked.

Stuff into three peppers. I used a green, orange and yellow pepper.

Put the peppers in a baking dish and spread the diced tomatoes over them, then cover with foil.

Bake for 50 minutes at 350 with foil covering, then take the foil off, add 1 slice of part skim mozzarella to the top of each pepper and broil for 5 more min.

My menu planning for breakfast, snacks and lunches is very simple. I like to do big-batch cooking on the weekend and portioning into individual servings so I have quick food to grab for work. This week I made a big pot of steel-cut oatmeal for breakfasts, bought a rotisserie chicken to put on salad, bought a big box of mixed baby greens from Costco, and I cooked a batch of slow-cooker vegetarian vindaloo and a batch of chili.

PHASE 2

*Breakfast*
oatmeal with cinnamon, Splenda and milk
or
Dempsters Ancient Grains toast with peanut butter
coffee

*Snack*
yogurt

*Lunch*
Vegetable vindaloo (recipe on my page), salad with chicken
or
Chili, salad

*Snack*
banana or apple

*Dinner*
Whatever Hubby and I manage to plan on the drive home, then defrost, prepare and serve in a hurry. We're very disorganized about supper. Often more salad or pan-fried veggies are on the menu.

Lovebeam, I have been looking at your menus for ideas.
I am thinking about roasting cubes of butternut squash and cauliflower. Just cannot decide what to use for the protein. today is grocery day. Discount day, so I try to shop Thursdays. Sometimes they will have a lot of meat that is half price because it needs to be cooked or frozen.

I definitely do all my cooking for the week on Sunday evenings. This week it included "Mock" pancakes & turkey sausage links for breakfasts, meat-crust pizza (with green & red peppers and mushrooms) and a salad (already made up) for lunch and a turkey hot dog with a large servings of steamed veggies for dinners. I also have Gorton's frozen filets in my freezer just in case I want a change up.

I believe the issue with ICBNB is that the label is for 10 spritzes whereas most folks use way more than 10 - hence the label would be inaccurate for the calorie count. This is frequent for many of those items listed as no to low calories.

Have you seen the book Eat This Not That?
It helps you buy things good for you.
"I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" is a No No according to the book the label misrepresents the amount of fat and calories in all of their products. "Olivio" brand does the same.
This has helped me the most at the grocery store.

so I made a chili out of the recipies on this site:
http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-de
tail.asp?recipe=31525

Alyson's vegertarian chili- only I added extra peppers, real garlic, and ground turkey- IT IS DELICIOUS! I haven't entered it in the system yet- besides its not my recipie- I just love peppers... and I am a meat girl. Also I added more cumin and chili powder to taste!!

This was such a great meal-

So today is sunday. I took out 4 Tilaipias coverend with pesto, I took mixed veggies and butternut suqash and roasted. I made mashed cauliflower howevr the consistency was that of a puree, is that right??
I took some egg whites, cheese and turkey bacon, cauliflower made an omlette and split in half for two days.
Made a bean dip with veggies for snack
Man this seems like a lot of food
Now i just need to think of meat to go with my salads for lunch.
I didn't measure everything exactly or enter it in the recipe tracker..i am working on that.

I try to prep on the weekend so I'm not overwhelmed during the week. It also helps to have something already prepared that you can just heat up for those nights when I have stop and get poster board or we need to make an emergency trip to the library. Today I made a big pot of soup, and some guacamole. Another thing that I find helpful is to keep onion and peppers chopped and in the fridge.

It's probably necessary to do a bit of both. Batch cook what you can, and have other things prepared so they're ready to go.

As to how and when you do this, that's up to each individual's schedule and what best fits into their lives.

Since I'm retired, I have the freedom to do things on a daily basis, but heck...I don't like being chained to the kitchen!!

A well stocked fridge and freezer keeps me on target. Otherwise I'd be grabbing for the quick and easy all the time.

Personally I tend to cook a couple dishes that I can eat off or use thru the week. For example a pot of soup, a bowl of cole slaw, and maybe a pork tenderloin that I can use in stir fry/sandwiches/sliced on salads. Otherwise my "planning" happens at 6am with my cup of coffee..hehe.

When meal planning do you cook everything up on Sundays so all you have to do is put in your lunch bag and warm up or do you prep everything and then asemble and cook during the week??? I find that write down what i am gonna eat but then during the week i still have to cook the omlette or oatmeal, assemble the salad etc

Although this isn't a "menu plan" per se, it IS a suggestion that we sometimes overlook.

Why wait 'til the Holidays? Just now I put a turkey breast in the oven. This will feed the two of us today and tomorrow, and will give me a few individual portions to add to my freezer stash.

At my supermarket, turkey is much less expensive than most of the other meats. Most of us do use the ground turkey, turkey bacon and other turkey products, but why not the larger pieces? Even a whole turkey if someone in your family eats the dark meat?

With this, I'll cook cranberries the way Hubby likes them..which means sugar and I'll pass. He'll have his beloved potatoes..also a pass for me, but I'll add something green and legal that I can share, and there's always a wonderful salad with "who knows what?" in it. With salad, I'm of the school that says "the more the merrier".

No, it isn't November or December..but so what?

It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.

One of my favorite things about this group is that I know that if I have a question that someone on the team will be able to answer it.

Another favorite thing is that I learn something new almost every day which to me makes life worthwhile. Seriously, I have to grow, I hate stagnation. My time on earth is limited. I'm not into wasted days and wasted nights.

And the leaders of this group are always identifying the needs of the members and meeting those needs.

This thread is such a good idea because sometimes everyone gets in a rut and you're tired of the "same old - same old" and out of ideas and don't want to do a lot of research. You want a no-brainer. Just let me eat. So it's really nice to see what everyone else is eating and then do a copy-cat.

I see messages on the group sometimes and say, "Hey, why didn't I think of that?!!" Today's special treat was hearing JD's and Kierae's menu planning. I've attempted to do this for years and seem to get bogged down and give up. After reading these messages I actually thought, "I can do this and should!!" My screwed up methodology was derailing me. As usual I'm turning something simple and straight forward into quantum physics. I need to lighten up and check this out.

Breakfast - p1

Onions, raw, 0.5 cup, chopped
Better 'n' Eggs egg substitute, 0.5 cup
Kraft Free American Cheese Singles, 1 slice
Red Ripe Tomatoes, 1 cup, chopped or sliced
Morningstar Farms Sausage Patties, 1 serving

Omelette: In nonstick pan sprayed with cooking spray, add onions and any seasonings (I do a spritz of Braggs Liquid Aminos) and cover with lid. Add a splash of water to prevent from sticking. Add tomatoes and throw in sausage patty. Cover and let cook for about 2 minutes. Chop up sausage patty. Add egg. When it begins to set, add slice of cheese. Finish cooking up, fold and serve.

Calories: 239

You can sub in any combination of veggies: zucchini, mushrooms, spinach, peppers, broccoli, broccoli slaw...change up the cheese and go with feta. Can also add 1/4 cup of beans versus the Morningstar. Garbanzo beans, spinach and feta is a great combo.

I do the same thing Jay Dee but I start with my veggies...I usually always have my yogurt and nuts and token fruit so I do that too and then work around the rest.

Buffalo Chicken Big Salad - p1 lunch or dinner

Fresh Express Sweet Baby Greens, 2 cup
Red Ripe Tomatoes, 0.5 cup, chopped or sliced
Cucumber (with peel), 0.5 cup slices
nonfat sour cream, 2 tbsp
Chicken Breast, no skin, 4 ounces
Treasure Cave Reduced Fat Crumbled Blue Cheese, 2 tbsp

For the chicken: dice and cook up in a nonstick pan sprayed with cooking oil. When it is cooked thru (about 10min max) spritz with a couple sprays of I Can't Believe Its Not Butter and then splash your Frank's Buffalo Sauce over it and then its done. I do not count the ICBNB spritz or the Buffalo Sauce since its negligble calories (although there is sodium so keep that in mind). Toss chicken over your salad.

The salad dressing is FF sour cream mixed with dry ranch dressing - keep a container of it premixed. Again the dry mix is neglible calories when spread across the entire container so I just count the sour cream.

Total calories: 222

This is a GREAT idea, Kierae. I seem to remember asking your help with this very issue awhile back.

One thing I've found that works for me is to plan out the day's menu, working with what I have.

First, I plug in my proteins for the day, spreading them between the meals and snacks.

Then I add the one-per-day items, like cheese, nuts, etc., as well as the limited items like dairy.

While doing this, I'll plug in my snacks, making sure to get some protein in all meals and snacks.

Drop the beans in there somewhere, where ever they fit..whether it be meal of snack.

After all this is situated, I throw in my veggies all over the place, making sure that I get at least my 4 1/2 cups.

Doing it this way, and using the meal tracker rather than a piece of paper gives me the opportunity to plug the holes, make sure everything is there and that nothing is there more than it should be goes a LONG way toward keeping me on track.

This seems to be complicated and too time consuming, but it truly isn't. Only take a few minutes of thought and pecking on the keyboard each day, then it's a done deal and I don't get caught with any surprises at the end of the day.

It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.

I am sticking this under the Intro section because we can only "sticky" 3 items under each forum and we have space here.

The point of this thread is for people to post menus. We are constantly being asked for planned out menus which quite honestly is hard to do. You write up a menu plan and someone will always come along and find they don't like something on it and then get STUCK. So this is going to be an ongoing TEAM work in progress.

I ask if you post a meal plan you indicate what phase it is. If you have recipes you use, add a link or indicate if it is under our recipes(see link button above!). If you have calorie count, by all means include it.

At some point I may reorganize this thread into a new thread and have actual meal sections so it is easier to read. But for now, this is a starting point. Hopefully this will help each of us when we get stuck, get bored, or just want to try something new.
