Patch: sorry, I thought you were using South Beach for maintenance - with the loss you have already had, do you think you "need" Phase 1? the main purpose of it is to 'break' the cycle of junk food cravings so if you don't have that kind of issue, Phase 2 should be a good approach for you ....

Hi there and I would suggest you check the Tips/hint thread for what is allowed on the diet and an overview. Breakfast meat wise - turkey bacon, turkey ham, canadian bacon, turkey sausage (occasionally due to the fat) are all suggested. Anything else you take a fat hit on which if that is fine with you, the weight moves a bit slower, etc.

The pepperoni - buy turkey pepperoni and again, not a daily eat.

Chicken thighs - no. Chicken breasts yes - due to the fat content in thighs.

It is a great way of eating and very healthy so check out the tip thread, read the book (get at the library if you don't want to buy) so you get the concepts behind it and good luck!

Thank You for quick response --

OK -- ditch the pepperoni
I didn't think fruit was allowed in Phase 1
maybe ham instead of sausage for breakfast ?

What are the percentages of carb/fat/protein ?
Also, I'm am still going to try to stick to my calorie plan ---- 1000-1400

and Yes, I do miss New England -- but I couldn't afford to live there anymore --

I think phase 1 South Beach would be more like this:

breakfast: 2 eggs, poached, with mushrooms & bell peppers, v-8 and/or skim milk with coffee/tea
snack: lowfat, plain yogurt with vanilla flavoring & artificial sweetener
lunch: 3 chicken thighs, green salad with tomatoes & beans, olive oil & vinagar, skim milk
snack: lowfat cheese w/ celery
dinner: fish & green beans, green salad with almond slivers, olive oil & vinagar
snack: lowfat ricotta cheese with flavorings

Hope others chime in, but we eat lots of vegetables on the Beach, and it is my understanding that the types of fats found in pepperoni and sausage are to be avoided.

Hi Patch! Not sure what the 'core plan' is, but you have done a wonderful job, you must be so proud of your accomplishment!

South Beach emphasizes reduced fat dairy, lean meats, whole grains, lots of fruit and vegetables and a couple of healthy snacks between meals. Your menu looks pretty good - although the pepperoni and sausage may have more fat than you would want to have in one day's worth of food. Eggs, fish, hamburger, green beans and cheese (reduced fat) are all great! Maybe fruit as a snack (e.g., apples, grapes).

I am from New England also - finally getting cold up here!

Good luck to you!!

Good Morning -

I think I would like to try South Beach - been on core plan for 9 months and feel like a change.

I'm 66 - live in FL for 18 months - from Boston

Just went to store and bought some real hamburg and breakfast sausage - and pepperoni

my plan for today is
2 eggs + 3 sausage
3 chicken thighs
low carb ketchup
fish + green beans
pepperoni + cheese for snack tonite

how bad does this sound ?

thank you and any advice ?

Welcome. I've been on the beach for almost two years now...almost to goal (those last 20lbs are a killer) and I'm also looking forward to P3. I expect that I'll keep on with P2 principals and allow myself an extravagance every once in a while. SB really is an easy way to go once you get into the swing of things.

Have a happy, safe and healthy holiday!

YellowBrickRoad - I also am so glad to see you here. I've been eating South Beach for five months now and it is really such a welcome example to have people who have been on the Beach for years! It would be great to see a South Beach Maintance forum and I am looking (a ways into the distance) to being active there!

I can't tell you how glad I am that you are on the team and an excellent example that this is a permanent way of eating. When people adopt the entire philosophy around South Beach, they won't look at it as a "diet" and consequently will see less of the rebound weight gain you see so often when people hit their goal weight and decide to eat more like their pre SB (or whatever other diet). Look forward to your contributions!

I have been following SB for a while now and was a member of a forum that seems to have technically self-destructed so I am looking for other folks who appreciate the common sense of SB principles. I pretty much eat P2 "with treats" even at this stage and am fine with it. Once I saw results on SB, I started regular exercise and at this point, I do something (elliptical or stationery bike or walk outside) for 30 to 40 minutes most days of the week and it has become a true habit. I hope that I can contribute to the team!
