Bear, Welcome to SP and to the Oregon team. I am truly sorry you lost your friend, but am glad you are making steps to a healthier lifestyle for you and your family. SP is the place to get the help you need and to keep you on track.
I love the name Bear, I have a nearly GS by marriage that is called "MOOSE" as well.
Glad you have finally got your head screwed on right way.

Welcome Phillip. Many people hit a point and have their "light-bulb" com on. Mine came when I "thought" I had a heart attack. Turns out I didn't but gave me cause-for-pause. Becoming a diabetic, on top of the heart probable attack scare, is when I decided I needed to change. The size 44 waist pant were getting tighter was another indicator. I to have seen many people my age and under dieing around me.
Spark has a lot of tools for you to use to get where you are going. My suggestion is to use all the calculator available in this website as well as others to help give you an idea of where you are and where you want to go. The keys are be consistent, and log all your nutrition and fitness.

Welcome, Bear, and I am so sorry for your loss. If something good can come of it, though, then that is definitely the right spirit!
I think one of the best foundations for success is a loving spouse who will support and help you on the journey, and it sounds like you have this most-valuable asset, so you are already ahead of the game. Good luck, and hang in there! Once it takes hold, you won't want to stop! :)

spark people has helped me along lose 65 lbs. It can help you. Know that we are all here to help you I started out, first by walking in my neighborhood 15 minutes a day. My knees were hurting like crazy because I was MORBIDLY OBESE) Then I increased the speed and the length of the walk gradually. Now I'm walking 3 miles a day.

Hello every one. My name is Phillip, allthough most of my friends call me Bear (same size, but i have more fur) I have been a big guy since i was a kid. It never really bothered me allt hat much, even with the teasing and whatnot that came from school. However, Just over a year ago i married the love of my life. While she says that she does not care about my size, she does worry about my health. I finally got my kick in the pants when a very close friend of mine died not but a week ago from a heart attack. That made me think... if he died from a heart attack, and was in far better shape than i am, I stand a pretty good chance of having the same happen to me. So here I am, trying to do what i can to reverse years and years of not caring all that much.
