Welcome. I belong to this team as well as the Portland team. I forgot to mention that purchasing the book Spark will give you your basic building blocks.
I think you will find that SparkPeople will be a great source for you to learn lifeskills. The key is to log in all food everyday. There are a few building blocks to complete the base to built from. I have been with Spark since Jan 2010 and have managed to lose 51 lbs. It is the most fun diet I have done. It is not so much of a diet as it is making good food choices and staying within a calorie range.
My suggestion is to read all the articles you can get your hands on.
