I am new to this so apparently I start here...I love to talk about my fish, so this seems like a good place to be. I currently have 8 tanks in my house. There are three 10 gallon, a 35 gallon, a 40 gallon, a 55 gallon, 125 gallon, and the newest 350 gallon. This is what happens when fish keep growing! I think the big tank will be able to now handle the full growth of my largest fish which is an Asian clown knife (currently about 20 inches long). He started as a 3 inch baby 3 years ago. His tank mates include an 11 inch clown loach, 2 ten inch Bala Sharks, 5 nine inch Tinfoil Barbs, an eight inch featherfin catfish, a fourteen inch pleco, a ten inch tiger shovelnose catfish, and a six inch prochilodus. These guys all currently live in the 125 gallon but will be moving to the 350 gallon within the month. The 125 gallon will be converted to an African cichlid tank once the others move.

in northern Colorado (MST)

If there is no wind, row.

Learn to let it go when appropriate, learn to breathe deep and slow in a focused manner, keep moving, and seek contentment and happiness.

Hi Guys, I think I found the team for me. I am very much an aquarium enthusiast and have a few tanks that I maintain. I hope this is an active site because there are always questions popping up in the fish world and finding a good source for answers come only from others that have been there. Kind of like trying to loose this weight and get in better physical condition. Chris emoticon

Hi Starr and Chris,

One reason I haven't responded sooner is...I didn't get a notification that you posted. I'm relatively new to SP, so maybe I didn't check the proper subscribe button. I'll check on it.

I'm always willing to chat about fish. I have about 35 tanks going right now. Chris; you should get a freshwater tank for your classroom. They are much cheaper to maintain. I'm a breeder, so I could donate fish for your students. As long as they won't be harmed in any way.

I've shipped fish all over the US, so getting them there safely shouldn't be an issue. If you get a budget, there's a fish auction website, where most of the people will ship right to your front door. Check out www.aquabid.com. There's over 80,000 members, and it's free to buy or sell!

Star, I just noticed this team! I don't have an aquarium now, but I have had a few in the past. I was a science teacher. We often studied the ocean--because I love it--and I can fit this topic to just about any topic I am teaching! In school I kept a salt water tank for a few years--till the principal said they could not give me any more money for it. I am glad there is a team like this! Chrisemoticon

It felt like I was not moving, but I guess I was. Even turtles eventually move from place to place. chris

Hello Rich,

My name is Starr and I just joined this team awhile back. I posted a few things, but did not get any response at all. emoticon But I see that you posted just last month, so thought I would see if maybe you were still around. I have a 20 gallon tank with a rainbow shark, a catfish (not a cory cat), 2 zebra danios, 2 pot belly mollies, and 5 guppies. Also several snails & a algae eater.

Then I have a 3 gallon tank which has a betta, 7 tetras & a couple of snails.

I'd love to chat with you. Maybe you will get this message. emoticonemoticon

I hope we can be friends,

Hi all,

I just joined SP yesterday, and this is my first post on the site. It seems appropriate to start here, as tropical fish are such a big part of my life. I've been keeping fish for 42 years, and currently have about 50 tanks. I've been a moderator at a couple different fish sites for about 12 years. My fish-related username is always "Fishnut2".
I'd be happy to recommend some fish sites if anybody is interested. I haven't seen any links posted here, so I won't volunteer any unless asked. (I don't know the forum etiquette yet). I know some good forums, chat rooms, auction sites,or ranking sites with top 100s.
Breeding is my strongest area, but I can probably help with a lot of questions. If I don't have a good answer I can tell you where to find one.
Now that I found some fish friends...I feel right at home! emoticon
Glad to meet ya's!
Rich

Hello! :)
My name is Sara. :)
I currently have three tanks. A 55 gallon, 35 gallon and 10 gallon.

My 35 and 10 gallon are empty. I had a baby Albino Tiger Oscar in my 35, but she passed yesterday. I woke up, fed her and she was fine. Then I came home and she was dead. I have no idea what happened. :/

In my 55 I have:
- Peacock Eel
- Rainbow Shark
- Blood Parrot
- Angel Fish
- Tiger Plecostomus
- Pictus Catfish
- Danio
- Dojo Loach
- Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami
- Opaline Gourami

I love taking care of my fish and my tanks. :)
I don't really know what to say about my tanks, besides what I have. haha.

New guy here.

I'm a long time fish geek & love South Americans. I usually keep a ton of Discus, but had to sell of my 150 show and fish about a year ago...long story. I'll have some more soon.

However, I am currently breeding Angels. I have two pairs and two other groups I hope will pair off soon...and probably about 100 juveniles left. I also breed bristlenose...which is no big feat. Still fun to do.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

My name is Mandy, and I have been into fish keeping for years!! I especially love live-bearer fish..guppies, platies, mollies, and sword-tails! But recently I have started breeding my Bettas! My male is tending his bubble nest right now! The eggs should hatch in the next day or so!! This is my pair's 3rd attempt! But I am super hopeful! Third time is a charm right?! emoticon I am new to SP, and on my 12th day of working out...I am down 7lbs and 3.5" overall so far!! All 'buddies' are welcome on my page!! Hello all,
I'm new to Sparkpeople, but I have been a fish hobbiest for a while.

I have all fresh water tanks:

A 92 gal planted corner tank. This tank is my "Asian tank". It has Weather Loaches, Panda Gara, schools of Rosy Barbs, Puntius narayani, Dianos, and White Clouds.

A 65 gal planted "African Tank". It has Pelvicachromis taeniatus,
Pareutropius buffei, Yellow-tailed Congo tetra, Ctenopoma fasciolatum.

A 29 gal with Platies.

A planted 10 gal with 4 Honey Gourami's.

Looking forward to being part of the group.

Hi Fish Lovers,

I am Brad and I have been a Spark member since January 4th.

During my time in the hobby (about 15 years) I have kept numerous varieties of tropical fish and most recently wild-caught and first generation African Cichlids.

I am in the research/planning stage for a large South American biotope tank.

Good luck to my Spark peers and I am glad to be here.

Hello all,

I'm Kogo Shuko, best known as Kogo, I suppose.

I've owned a variety of fish throughout my life, including tropical, but at the current moment I own three small comet goldfish (just some 17 cent feeders) and two black moores. Unfortunately I've been infected with ich!! I've been treating the water daily, and they all seem to be getting better.

I have to hold off on getting my pleco until my fish are disease free. =/

Of course you fit in! Goldfish are part of fish-keeping too! Anyway, welcome. I'd love for this club to be more active than it is, but there are some truly beautiful fish being kept by various members here, with a lot of knowledge to be shared and some good, positive enthusiasm when it comes to both fish keeping and/or weight loss.

Hi,
Fairly new SparkPeople fan. I'm just starting to realize that this community is more than about weight loss and fitness!
Not sure if I fit in here.... I have been an avid goldfish fan since my teens - so that's about 40 years or so!
Presently have a 55 gallon tank with 5 large fantail goldfish of different colours and 2 plecos.
Looking forward to sharing fishy experiences with all.

One cheap little 1/2gallon tank fully kitted out for just AU$9.50 started of my betta obsession.

I have 5 bettas atm (last night it was 6 but a naughty little boy wanted to feed the fishies yoghurt -_-) I have a DoubleTail (F), SuperDelta (M), 2 VeilTails (M)and I do not know what my other female is (the dead one was a CrownTail- F)

My first VT male is a royal blue and the other is a purple bleeding butterfly, my third male , my SD is a cross between a clear and a pastel opaque (pastel blue fins with some yellow colouration- NO GREEN, my females are DT- cambodian, my other I don't quite know lol, she changes her colours A LOT lol

Today my SD and DT had a great spawning session ;) and I had about 1000 eggs from when I sat and watched which was AWESOME =D and I managed to get a few pics and even some video.

I have 3x20gallon tanks, 1x10g, 1x1/2g, 1x55g and have a 70odd gallon on its way soon i hope, I'm gonna need it lol,

Well thats my fishie obsession :D and I cannot wait till I have my free swimming babies

Setting a good example for the most important person in my world. Healthy living for the new generations.

I love your tank! Puts me in the mind of setting up my 20gal again...

When I kept bettas, they were in a tank within a tank sort of setup, but they got so used to each other that they stopped fighting after awhile.

Hi. I just joined group. Happy to find you. I currently have a 20-gal tank and it is a bit unusual, as I have been raising Bettas together safely. It certainly makes for a picture of beauty. That's not to say I haven't had a bully or 2. There are also 2leopard Danios, 2 Knight Gobies, Clown Loaches, Yoyo Loaches, Panda Cats and a Cory Catfish. Oh yeah, 2Chinese Algae Eaters. Something in every level. I'll try to get a photo up on my page. Happy to be here! I'm Donna from Illinois.

Welcome Kimb! If it were me, I'd put in a few danios or balas and just let them all enjoy the space. But I'd have a problem with letting them become oscar food. I know it's nature, but I just can't do that on purpose.

Anyway, welcome to the team, and I hope you have success meeting your goals! Spark has lots of good tools and information that can help you get there.

Hi I'm Kimb (the 'b' is silent).

My current aquarium is kinda of sparse. I'm currently living with my parents and am unsure how long that is going to continue and am unwilling to take on too much of a fish commitment.

I currently have only my 75 gallon up and running. It has 3 Silver dollars and one convict cichlid. (The convict appears to have a tumor :( )

In the past I have kept oscars and female and male bettas.

I'm considering putting smaller fish in my aquarium now that my oscar's gone. That way, if I move somewhere and can't take my fish, they'll be easy to get rid of (if only as oscar food).

Any suggestions for low maintenance schooling fish to go with my convict and silver dollars?

I'm so excited about SP, and hope to make some great pals,

Cheers and have a wonderful day :)

Kimberly

Hi!!
I'm new here! I joined SP ages ago... but never really got into it. Trying again now and I'm suuppperrr happy that I found a group of fish nerds! Of course I mean nerd in the nicest possible way.

I have a 37g reef tank and a 72g on the way (present from the coolest boyfriend ever, heh!) The 37 has one b&w and one o&w ocellaris. They're named Vsepr, pronounced vesper, and Ion. Only two fish because what I'm really excited about is coral! I have two fabulous leathers, several zoas, neon candy cane, neon hammer, green star polyps, a few shrooms, and a pink frogspawn. I'm planning on taking the "big next step" to SPS (small polyp stony) corals in march, hurrah! lol

Anyways just wanted to say hi, so HI!

Hi, it’s just me mare.
Nice to see there’s some aquatic nuts here. I’ve had tanks since I was knee high to a grasshopper (anybody remember the old Metaframe tanks with slate bottoms?) and got my hubby in on it after we got married over a quarter century ago…

We’ve dabbled in fresh and salt; we are sticking with fresh water for now and currently cut back our active tanks to one 125 gal. It’s a mixture of CA (Central American)fish and planted at the moment. We go the low tech route and aren’t running any Co2 on the tank.
The plants are still living so I must be doing something right…

I also have two muttlies (in my avatar) that keep me hopping. I joined Spark People on the recommendation of a co-worker. Cool site. Needing to battle my slowing metabolism by eating better and exercise to lose a few stubborn pounds and firm up.

Hi Trev,
Your reef tank sounds awesome.Live rock has got to be so interesting, with new inhabitants coming forth to surprise you. I plan to check out your pictures when I can look at them on my computer, the mobile view is too tiny to see much. Glad to have you here, I think you'll find lots of common ground with this team.

Hello all. I am new to this team, but not so new to SparkPeople. I have been on and off SparkPeople for a while now, but with my growing interest in fish, just found this team.

Tanks:
We have a 45 gallon fresh water, home to 2 neon tetras, 3 guppies, 2 "adult" sword tails, 2 "teenage" sword tails, and 1 (possibly 2) "baby" sword tails. 2 frogs, and 2 snails. It was the "main" tank in the house until September 2009 when I got my birthday present (see saltwater tank below). The sword tails seem to have fry about every 2 months. I do not separate out the fry, but if they live great, if not, just hope it is not enough to crash the levels of the tank.

120 gallon reef tank. This was my birthday gift, and my personal first saltwater tank. I have helped some others with their saltwater tanks, so it was not all new, but I am still learning. So far in the tank---
Fish: yellow tang, tomato clown, and cardinal
Inverts: torch coral, green brain, green button polyps, green hairy mushroom, 4 turbo snails, ## blue leg hermit crabs (somewhere between 5 and 12), 2 peppermint shrimp, and a emerald crab.
Others (hitchickers on the live rock): We have seen 2 small star fish, and possibly some tube worms (feather dusters) but will have to wait and see what they grow into, right now they look like skinny tubes, with a thread coming out the end.

I have some pictures of the reef tank that I will try and get uploaded (have not done that on a team page yet, but I will work on that now).

Hello all,

My name is Chris and I joined SparkPeople in October. I stumbled across the fish lovers team a while ago but haven't really gotten around to exploring yet. I noticed there are many freshwater hobbyists and a couple of salties. I am going to add one more to the salt side. I've been into the hobby about 4 years.

I currently have a 90 gallon reef tank.
Fish: (2) false percula clowns, (4) blue-green chromis, (1) Yellow-tail blue damsel, (1) Blue damsel, (1) humbug damsel.
Inverts: (1) rose bubble anemone, (1) Long-spine sea urchin, (1) Scarlet Cleaner shrimp, (1) Coral banded shrimp, (1) Peppermint shrimp (1) Emerald crab, trochus and turbo snails.
Corals: Acropora, Pocillopora, Frogspawn, orange cup (sun) coral, pulsing xenia, cauliflower colt, mushroom polyps.

I've had up to four salt tanks going including the 90-gallon, (2) 10-gallon species tanks and a 30-gallon RedSea Max. However, due to a demanding work schedule and a devastating tank crash earlier last year I decided to cut back a bit.

Anyone that wants to talk fish or anything in general please feel free to drop me a line.

Welcome to the fish team!
I know what you mean about these plecos that just grow and grow. I have one that is about 10 inches long now. He's got lots of personality, too. We call him cookie monster because he gloms onto his algae wafers so eagerly.

You can post photos of your tank in the photo section of this page if you want to, we'd love to see your tank!

Hi~ I started keeping a freshwater aquarium about 6 years ago. My present setup is a 55 gal tank with 2 angels, several small cory cats, 1 very large pleco, and 3 rosy barbs. Also has live plants. It's very easy to maintain & everyone seems perfectly happy with each other.

Oh, wait, and 4 fish that were purchased when they were tiny little feeder fish ... as a snack for the angels, who ignored them. So now I have those swimming around, too.

I initially had a 20 gal tank with neons, a few black skirt tetras & the pleco. The pleco, of unknown heritage, has grown to giant proportions (oh I wish I'd known then how big he was going to become!) I was fortunate enough to find a FREE 55 gal tank with a handmade oak stand on wheels, with front doors & rear access panels & brass hardware. Whew!

Been active on SP for awhile now & am looking forward to getting to know my fish friends here!

Stay calm and carry on.

Patty what a great idea with the brackish tank...a little for flexibility on saline levels and a great trick to be able to control parasites by just raising the level.

Can't wait to hear how this works for you. Welcome to the team!

Hello everyone!

My name is Patty and Im pretty new around here. Glad to find some fellow fish fanatics!

I tend to somewhat dote upon my fish, lol, especially my bettas. I have bred bettas and anglefish in the past, but now lack of space means simply keeping my guys as happy as possible. My next goal is to get my spare 55g up and going as a brackish tank, hopefully that wont be too long off!

Hi everybody,
I just stumbled across this team. I'm delighted to find there is a fishloving community here on Spark! I currently keep 4 smallish freshwater tanks, but I have kept a 100 gallon salt tank in the past and large freshwater tanks too so I can relate to that. Right now I have a large plecostemus, angelfish, bala sharks, corys, an albino betta and a blue betta (in separate tanks), and countless guppies, plants and snails. I look forward to reading more here and meeting you all.

Hi, fish people, nice to meet you! I thought I was the only person posting fish pictures in my photo gallery.

I have a 20-gallon with two polypterus senegalus (dinosaur eels) but the girls are growing so I'll need to get them a bigger place in the next several months. They co-exist with a red pleco.

In a different room I have a mysterious-looking dark tank with a gaggle of gold tetras and a fat dark algae eater who hides inside a decorative coiled fake shell.

In a different room I have the plant nursery as well as the infusoria factory.

I just moved, so the next tank to be set up will have a blue dwarf gourami. I used to have several dwarf gouramis of various types, but their politics are dreadful -- by human standards, they behave as if they are in a daytime soap, making love, fighting, establishing and re-establishing dominance, making love, fighting, etc. I bonded with one blue male when he was alone, and he responded to me, visually explored new things, and acted like a dog. He died in my hand, possibly of a broken heart. My main problem to research is how to have a fun pet without isolating him. Women make men act crazy. Men compete with each other, sometimes brutally. Women are frequently nasty in a group. One man alone is lonely but makes a great pet. This is tough!!!!

I also want to get a couple of dwarf freshwater puffers. They need snails for their diet and to wear down their beaks, and snails I got, three varieties. Four if you include a mutant red-fleshed ramshorn which is quite pretty.

It's interesting reading what everyone has.

My son's Kribensis pair had their first batch of fri this morning. THere are 6 that we can see. There were more but the other fish ate some and the filter may have sucked them up too. I don't know how many will survive.

They were just the little gold alge eaters. My pleco is doing just fine.
Guess I'll have to keep researching.
TY for your help.

Do you have any blue/green algae (it is slightly darker, blue toned) this will put these guys off... just scrape it off. Also put a mussel shell in the tank so they can get needed calcium/minerals (other shells seem too hard). Boil it first to remove anything harmful.

Be sure your tank has been established long enough that algae is there as a food source. You can put a small light on the outside of the tank to increase algae production. I like to put a stone, bubbler next to the light to encourage the health forms of algae (blue and red not great, green/light green good). You can help add in food such as cucumber, peas - just be sure to take out after a few days if not completely eaten.

What kind of algae eaters? Otos, Siamese Algae Eaters, or something else?

I haven't been able to keep an oto in anything less than a 55 gallon for more than a few weeks. I've come to the conclusion that they're just fragile fish.

Also, what are your tank parameters? Are they giving any warning signs or showing any odd behavior? Tank mates?

So I'm pretty good with fish I was raised with 10 tanks in my basement as a kid but I am having a major time with trying to keep my small algae eaters from dying... nothing else is dying in my tank just the algae eaters...
Anyone have ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Hi there! I'm so glad someone started a team for fish keepers that includes freshwater!

I first started keeping fish about 4 years ago. It started with a betta in a plant vase that my husband bought me for Mother's Day. From there the betta moved to a 3-gal Eclipse, then a 10-gal, then a 55-gal med-tech planted. At the time, I really hadn't done my homework.

That sounds odd to say I had a med-tech tank and hadn't done my homework, but I hadn't. I recall two battles with bad seals, and the tank never seemed to cycle properly. It always had high ammonia. Then came the greenwater. I tried a tank blackout, not thinking that by killing the power to the tank, I was also seriously hindering the oxygenation cycle. The tank was a total loss. I gave up after that, for a while. I vowed after that, that if I got into fish again, I'd spend the cash for a properly-engineered tank.

The bug hit me again a few months ago. I was going to stick with an Eclipse hex-5 until this coming December - and I was doing OK with it (and an Otocinclus, 2 cories and a gourami). Then my husband surprised me with a 75-gallon for Christmas.

I'm back to med-tech, but I think I did a better job preparing it. I tend to think of my fish tank like a musical production of sorts, or maybe a grand opera.

The first fish in it were six corydoras (2 ea. albino, bronze and julii), followed by three Siamese Algae Eaters. Those, along with my 2 clown loaches are what I refer to as my "supporting cast." They spend a lot of time in the spotlight, though.

The stars of the show are a pair of neon tetras, five glowlight tetras, and three dwarf gouramis (2 powder blue, one honey, all male).

The set-dressing is a mish-mash of hygrophila, swords, java moss, subulata, rotala, camboba, crypts, watersprite and anachris. I had to do a cutback of the watersprite, anachris and hygro yesterday. I took the cuttings in to my favorite fish place and got $35.00 in livestock credit. That made a happy Kerrella.

The props are several interesting limestone formations and some large river rocks. What I love best about a planted tank is that one minute it can look like it's nothing but plants, then a flash or red darts out of a hole you didn't notice before, races across the aquarium, and disappears in a mass of green.

The other specs are: T5 HO lighting (2 48" bulbs), CO2 cannister system w/airstone diffuser. Eco-complete substrate under "natural" gravel. Fluval 450 cannister filter.

Does anyone have pics of their tanks posted?

I have been keeping fish for over 20 years.
Angelfish was my first love and why I got started.
I now have 1 fantial goldfish and 2 orandas in a 75 gallon tank with three dojo's and 2 BN plecos. Would love Koi but they need at least 300 gallons each. lol
I have a 55 gallon with two Koi angelfish, some green fire tetras, 3 glass fish, 1 yoyo, 1 BN pleco and if they are still there two ottos.
This tank is also a low teck, low light planted tank.
I have a 20 gallon with one angelfish and some White Cloud Mountain Minnows. (they are going to my outdoor water tub as soon as I get it set up. The WCMM not the angelfish.)
This tank is also low teck, low light planted tank.
I have one 5 gallon betta tank and four 1 gallon betta jars/bowls.
I love fish. lol

May God bless you.

Angie

Keep on walking, walking, walking....

Hello, I'm Katherine. Besides my, very bias, high opinion of my dog (my picture), my loves are my two dojo loaches and multiple white clouds. I know, I know it is just a cold water tank (yes in my youth I did the huge salt water tank, but I lack the energy now).

My clouds are my delight, they keep having babies (seven new as of right now - these managed to survive the dojos). My dojos are now in love and who knows? I added some cold water to the tank tonight to spark some interest.

I would have normally stayed away, but with only three here...you need me, the fish of the world need a voice (bubble, splash).

Does joining this team mean I need to start swimming?

Hello.

Currently in our house hold we have

66 gallon with disus
47 gallon (square) with mostly Angel fish and a few other fish
60 gallon (octogon) with fancy gold fish and some small koi
77 gallon with koi
aand
100 gallon (cattle waterer) with koi.

The Koi will go outside when it warms up. Hopefully we can get a better house so we can put a pond in the back so they will have more room to swim.

Forgot my son's 20 gallon in his room with cichlids

Hello my name is Jessica I am currently 24 years old and have one 55 gallon tank, one 20 gallon tank, and one 10 gallon tank in my apartment with assorted tropical fish.
Every August I enter my fish in the Kentucky State Fair. This consist of decorating a tank in a theme that will match the fish in either color or name.
Last year I did The Wizard Of Oz and entered 2 different types of Rainbow fish since Dorothy says they are "Somewhere over the Rainbow".
I have been doing this since I was 12 years old and it is a huge passion for me. Not only are fish a great Stress Reliever but I pay $8 to enter in the fair for as many tanks as I want and I win trophies and cash prizes as well. Last year I entered 13 different fish tanks and won the Grand Championship called Sweepstakes which means I had the most ribbons out of everyone who entered. I also won 2 trophies last year, 1 plaque for best Goldfish of show, and $239 in prize money... not bad for a $8 entry fee.
I am very blessed with my luck in fish and have won 11 trophies, 4 plaques, and 3 Sweepstakes awards since I was 12.

What's your fish story?
