Hi! I'm Trina. I am not going to compete in figure, but I love the lifestyle of it. I get almost all of my fitness and nutritional info from Jillfit physiques, so I understand about all the dietary, supplemental, and training that goes into competing. I really just want to look like one for myself and to be proud that I achieved my goal of physique transformation. I have a long journey ahead of me as I have a lot of weight to lose. I also see this team is not quite as active, but thought I would join anyway. I wanted to get in contact with other people with similar goals.

Hi, my name is Meredith. I have been back to weight training for the last 6 months. I forgot how much I loved it. I am only 33, but have decided that my long range goal will be to try competition after I turn 35. I have a long ways to go to meet that goal. I have lost 22 pounds so far and am 9 pounds off my first goal. Since I have decided to try and compete my weight loss goals have become more like 30-40 more. I am looking for guidance and direction. I live in the middle of Iowa so there isn't a local fitness competition community available. I have met some men who plan to compete in bodybuilding competitions but that is it. I have lots of questions and hope someone who is currently competing can help me in answering them. Other then that I am lifting 5 to 6 days a week with 4 days of 30 minute cardio.

Hi all! I'm new to the team and new to figure competition. I still have a ways to go before I'd be able to compete, but I figured joining the team would be a good way to learn more about it. I've always wanted to get in shape and enter a competition, but never thought I could do it. I finally got tired of wishing and saying I can't, and finally took steps toward acheiving my goal. I've committed working out and eating right, and have been working with a trainer for a little over a month now to start leaning me out. I've lost 10lbs so far. Even if I never make it to competition, I'm excited about working out and getting fit!

Hello! Newbie here to the team. I've worked hard to lose body fat and increase muscle. My goal was to get to 16.9% and I'm at 17%. I'm happy with that! My PT keeps asking me if I have interest in competing. She thinks I can do it naturally. I don't have interest in competing, but do want to look like I do!!! I'm open for suggestions and advise. Knowledge is key!

Hi! I think a coach an d a personal trainer can be the same thing but not always. The traditional coach is the one who coaches a whole team of players in an athletic event. A personal trainer primarily does individualized training. However, the personal trainer can do a group session and also coach an athlete to better perform an athletic event.

Hi,

I'm interested in learning about bodybuilding. Is a "coach" the same thing as a "personal trainer"?

Thanks!

Have a great day!

Welcome. Sounds like you have a full plate. Competitions are hard on their own. The dieting is very strict. The training becomes very time consuming. Then, there is the practicing of the walks and poses. The expenses are alot too. Definitely give it thorough consideration before committing. If I can answer any questions for you, just ask.

I haven't yet committed to a show, but I've been considering it for a while. My biggest argument (excuse) is that dieting gets pretty dang extreme right before the competition. I know I'm competitive, but I've never been an athlete and this type of competition is a little intimidating. I guess I'm not sure I have "the right stuff."

I'm 37. Lift 2-3 times each week, do a mix of cardio 2-3 times a week (run ~3 miles, Zumba, Turbo Kick). I also work full-time, have 7 kids, and am applying to medical school this summer--so things are pretty intense for me right now. emoticon

Hi everyone! I am not yet 35+, but this was the closest group I could find to what I was looking for! If someone can point me in the right direction if there is another group, I would be happy to oblige, but I also think that I can relate to this "age group" well. I am 29 years old and a mother of 3 boys, ages 9, 7, and 5. I WAS always the lucky one that could stay thin and eat whatever she wanted. I never worked out, was never really "fit", but that didn't matter so much to me then. Then time caught up to me. I was no longer taking care of myself. At 29 I hit that dreaded 25 BMI overweight marker and have been putting on more weight since then. Even before getting to where I am, I never thought much about fitness,'mostly because of my stretch marks that I am so self conscious of. I haven't work a swimsuit of any sort since I was 19. I've been struggling with setting a goal...an achievable goal in a realistic time. One of the things I've always admired were women's fitness competitions.

I think that just may be the goal I can work towards...problem is, I have no idea where to start! My first thought was to lose weight and then concentrate on building muscle, but at what point would I know that I'm exercising for the definition. At this point I have gone to the gym with a friend 4x in the last week. That is all the working out I've done really since highschool gym class!

Most of all, I want my children to see that anything is achievable at any age and that health and fitness ARE important. I can't cook (or rather, I can, but am really bad!) and I know I've set many bad examples. Just looking to get healthy, in shape, and help my family along the way!

Hi! I'm a single 47-yr old mom of two: a grown married daughter who is expecting in April 2012, and a 16 yr old boy. Fantastic kids! I work for the Federal Government in Washington, DC (my birth city), and I LOVE my job. I have always been active, enjoy sports, traveling, dancing, and cooking. I also have a deep love for anything Louisiana, Latin, or German. Go figure? German by heritage, Louisiana for fun and food, and Latin for dancing. And I love NFL football...New Oreleans Saints are my #1 team, closely followed by Green Bay Packers (son-in-law turned me on to this team.)

I've been looking for a team that is focused on figure fitness and one that sets up monthly physical challenges. Even though I'm starting late in the month, I figure starting is better than waiting. I've been a 3-yr "free-day" cycle and now I am back to my pre-start weight. I have the knowledge and tools to achieve the results I want...just looking for the right team to keep me motivated. I enjoy team challenges and daily accountability. I used to be very active with an online fitness team through www.bodyforlife-tracker.com several years ago, that has since disbanded, but I remain close to a number of former members through facebook.

I also run throughout the year, but the race that I enjoy the most is the Army Ten Miler, because I work at raising funds for No Greater Sacrifice, a foundation that provides scholarships to children of service members who died in combat or have been permanently disabled.

While I do not plan on competing within the next year, I may seriously consider it in 2013 if I am pleased with my progress mid-way through 2012. The posted pic I have of me in my bikini is 3 years old. I consider it a skinny-fat pic, because even though I was strong and fit, my BF was still too high. Looking to reduce BF and gain strenth right now more than anything.

Hi, I'm waayy over 35, lol, but I really like the way I used to look, which is much like the figure competition photos I've seen.
I trained as a bodybuilder for about a year when I was a construction worker in the 80's, but I got involved in other areas of my life and much much later, I began to gain weight. I have been here on spark since September 2011, and already I've lost 30 lbs plus (and 50 plus from my HEW of 265).

I look forward to my future return to that great feeling of the endorphins flowing and knowing how great I look in a swimsuit or workout clothes!
ps my best friend recently cautioned me that since I've lost weight I look older bcs I have wrinkles. I told him, I don't care if I look old, I am old! I just want to look thinner and healthier!

hope to spark you all again soon!

Hello all...new to the whole figure thing and I haven't decided if I'm actually going to compete or not but I have committed to training as though I'm going to compete in June. I have two co-workers who are into body building. Both have competed all ready and we just kinda click when it comes to fitness. We'll see how it goes.

Hello Everyone,
I decided to compete in Figure this year. A few years ago I trained for one but did not make the stage. My lifestyle was not yet conducive to the focus and discipline that was necessary. Now, being much more disciplined and in the nest shape of my life I am going for it. I plan on competing in May, June, and July in Figure. I am currently training hard and will start dieting at the beginning of February. I was very excited to see a Figure competitor forum here on spark people. Although I am not yet 35 I hope you don't mind if I participate in discussions every now and then. I am also open to any and all advice as this will be my first time on the competitive stage and although it is very exciting I am also nervous about the day of the competition.
Take care :)

Hi I'm Kimber and my workout partner competed for the first time this year and he has convinced me that I need to try it at least once! LOL! So because one of my goals is to get in the best shape possible I am considering a bikini contest in 2011 and then doing "couples" with him!
I've had some health issues and finally have a clean bill of health so I feel like it's my time and I'm up for the challenge! Glad to find this team on Spark! Thanks!

Hello. I am a 44 year old married mom of 2 teenagers. I have been an athlete my whole life and have been concentrating on running the last 10 years. I lost 25 pounds last year and ran a half marathon, a goal I have had for several years. I would like to lose another 15 pounds to increase my muscle definition. I have incorporated 3 to 4 days of weight training with my running and am trying to tweak my diet to lose those last 15. I am hoping this team can help me with that.

Hi I joined this team to learn what it takes. I am not sure if I will ever actually compete but I am interested in getting to the point where I could. Who knows? Maybe some day I could actually think about competing but for now it is a big step to even set my goal at getting my body to the point where I could. Not too very long ago I wouldn't have even dreamed it would be possible but after reading testimonials on Spark People, now my interest is "Sparked" (pun intended).

Hi I am Michelle and last weekend I attended my first Figure competition as a spectator and the women truly impressed me with their beautiful physiques! At the moment I do not want to be in a figure competition, but I am interested in becoming really muscular (at least as muscular as my frame and genetics will allow) So I am looking for any help and advice in how to lift heavier and any types of advice on how to make this into a lifestyle including nutrition and books to read on the subject (or websites with a lot of information)! I am eager to learn!!! Thanks in advance! emoticon

Hello everyone! I am 43 and on a journey to compete in a figure competition. I have been a workout junkie for ten years and decided last year that I would quit procrastinating and put forth an effort to reach my goals and enter a figure competition. I really admire everyone on here for doing what they do every day to get fit, and I am inspired to reach my goals! I will post pictures soon. emoticon

Welcome Tia. It depends on the Federation, how you look, and so forth. I tested at 20 % bodyfat on Monday and I am competing in three weeks. I also found out I gained 6# of muscle since my last show. My waist measures where I was at 10 days out last time and I have 21 days this time. So I gauge more on how I look in the mirror than anything else. Go watch a show first preferably one you would like to compete in. Also, research the different federation rules and decide which one fits your physique. Also, it can be very expensive to compete. I spent around $1600 the first show. Will spend around $900 this time around. In my blog library I have an itemized list of my expenses last time. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a sparkmessage. Wendy

Hi I'm Tia. I'm 41 and in 2009 I went from size 14 to size 4 and have maintained. I accomplished goals like completing a Half and Full Marathon, and now, thanks to my personal trainer, I want to compete in a figure competition. My first question is, with my body fat at 22%, 5'3", 135 lbs, if I'm diligent, what's the soonest I should be ready? Thanks and look forward to learning a lot!

Hello all! I am glad to be part of this team. Figure competing has been a very long time dream of mine. I am 37 now, 38 in July and while I may never compete I really want to look like I do! It would be so cool for someone to randomly come up to me and ask me if I did! :)

Hi everyone- I just started my sparkpage today :-) I have been playing around on the site for a few days and I really like it. I just hope to meet some like minded friends to help keep me motivated. I am just trying to live a healthy life. My focus isn't so much on weight loss as it is on body fat percentage. I'd like to lose about 4%. I look forward to meeting you all. emoticon

Hi Folks,

I joined this team a few days ago, but I'm just now getting around to an intro.
I've been on SP for a long time... back when it was really new. And we've come a long way baby!

I'm not new to fitness either. But I went through a few years of turmoil (to put it politely!) and I let my body suffer the consequences. Now I'm kinda floundering a bit to get back to eating clean and working out - something that used to be very normal for me.

I need to lose about 40 pounds just to be healthy again, but before I turn fifty (2.5 years) I'd LOVE to do just one competition - even a small local one. I just don't know where to start with that.

Anyway, even if I never have the opportunity to compete, I am serious about looking and feeling like I could. So I welcome all the advice anyone wants to offer!

Glad to be here! emoticon

I am new to the group and to Sparks, but I have been following The Eat-Clean Diet by Tosca Reno for about 2 years. I lost 30lbs, put on muscle, and lost fat. I am at goal now. I am now just maintaining the lifestyle & fine-tuning how I want my body to look through weight lifting. I eat clean and work out with weights 3x a week and cardio 4-5x a week...would like to increase my cardio to 6x a week. I have been able to maintain my current weight for the last year with clean eating and exercise which is really big for me. I am 43 years old and while I dont see myself competing, I would love have the body of a figure competitor. So that is what I am working towards.

Hi Everyone! I competed 3 times between 06 and 08 and am still fighting the mental battle of the too strict dieting - and the excess pounds that resulted from binging. My goal is to get to 3 weeks out and then maintain that. I don't think I would compete again, but we'll see. :)

Thanks for the gloves Wendy!

Hi and welcome to our group! Try to concentrate on building muscle first of all. Watch when you eat complex carbs. Time them around when they are needed: first thing in the morning and pre and post weight training. If you would like more help, send me a sparkmail with your questions and I will do my best to help.

Hi there,
I'm new to this page. I have lost 18lbs of fat following body for life. I'm trying to lose more and really get ripped. I would love to focus on a goal like a competition, but have no idea how to do that. I feel like I'm on my way, and now it's time to get serious. How can I shed more weight and really lean out?

Time waits for no one.

Thanks! Hugs! Didn't mean I was new here :-) - just was communicating my "new" status to the new SP here in reference to my applying the knowledge you all apply to figure competition - in comparison I "still be a newbie"! ;-)

You have answered questions many times, and I am so encouraged all the work and discipline and information you and the others share and apply!! Will continue asking questions of you and absolutely keeping up with everyone's progress!

Hugs to you!

Welcome!
I am a "newbie" and more often than not a "silent supporter"! :-)

However, as a result of that - I'm increasing consistency, motivation.

Have now put on my calendar 3 dates of possible figure competitions I'm planning on at least attending in the audience category :-) in 2010. First time.

So interested and excited for those competing and sharing the process here!

Have a question - didn't know where to post it...I came across a certified personal fitness instructor and success coach, apparently known as MsFit in the bodybuilding industry...Karen Sessions...who has an ebook with tips and pointers...Anyone heard of her - know whether her ebook would be worth getting?

Otherwise - I'm poking along with my superslow Bowflex, and my rebounder for now, eating low carb - or making progress in getting there.

Or do you have another place here, or another book etc. that would be beneficial for me at my low level - but high hopes! :-)

Thanks!
Connie

Hi! My name is April and I'm from Hagerstown, Indiana - I have (within the past 3 months) decided to start lifting and building muscle. I absolutely LOVE it! I can't believe the change I've seen in such a short time in definition. Very cool! Right now, I'm trying to manage my calorie intake to around 1600 to 1800 a day and still get my recommended 135 grams of protein in - which is very difficult! I have gained about 5 lbs. since started lifting 12 weeks ago. Would like to eventually get weight down to around 125-130, but right now trying to concentrate on building muscle. Haven't posted any pics yet - but will get one on soon. Nice to see so many others that are interested in building as well!

Thank you for the links, Helena. Really great to have all important stretching exercises on one page.
All the books are great. I still use them. Exercise articles from magazines I have put into files. Very helpful.

I added a link to stretching exercises on spark where you will find our team blogs. Above are the links to upper and lower exercises on spark some are using weights others just body weight. I have many of those books too. They are still relevant. I would subscribe to Muscle & Fitness Hers and Oxygen. I use them all the time.

Cardio and strengh training - okay okay ....
Especially I have to get myself back to stretching, I have not seen any stretching videos here. Where do I find them?
Are there exercises with weights on SparkPeople?
I have quite some books about weight training: from Kiana Tom, Rachel McLish, many Muscle & Fitness Hers, somewhere must be a book from Schwarzenegger (about bodybuilding!) and more. But all this is several years old.

Introducing myself
Several years ago I saw a photo (I am not sure if it was in Fitness for Her or in Oxygen) showing 2 women with wonderfully trained bodies. One looked a bit older than the other, but about 40. Below it was written: Mother 75 and daughter 40. That did it for me. For a decade I worked out with weights about 40 to 50 minutes 2 or 3 times a week, went running 2 to 3 times a week for about 40 minutes and for 2 years I trained Pencak Silat twice a week for 2 hours. Until a couple of months ago, I was 53, I had a great figure. Only in the past few months I was so very busy and did not take the time to work out. My muscles turned into "pudding". I am now slowly getting back to my old routine to look like this 75 year old in 20 years from now and beyond.

Great to have you here CJFiles.

I can't imagine only eating 800 cals per day. I would starve! I eat anywhere from 1700-2100 per day with lots of good protein in the mix.

I enjoy reading about these fab women that compete. I'm envious of their dedication to their sport!! I'm more into arm wrestling, but do a lot of wt training.

WENDY - I must be skipping over where you are posting what you are eating. Thanks for the heads up on the blog reply! :-)

MEL - are you posting it where we could see what you are eating as well??

Right now - I'm not sure it matters as far as fine tuning - I just need to adjust my bad carbs out - every 2 weeks. Seems like I have about a 2 week good stint - then blow it big time for a couple of days.

However, I am interested in learning - seems to help me focus and zero in - increasing chance for progress!! :-)

I understand about the "sag!" Besides dropping the wt, I've had 5 belly surgeries. Don't get me wrong, my stomach looks tremendously better then it did 6 years ago, but I've contemplated surgery to get rid of extra skin, scars and some stretch marks.

Thanks for the wonderful welcome and the goodie!

Welcome Pris! I am so glad you joined. I understand the skin thing, I had twins besides losing 40+ pounds I have a little sag on my lower abs. I have contemplated having it removed, but am not sure it will be necessary as the right bikini seems to hide it well enough. I hope you find this group informative and supportive.

Welcome again!

Hey Everyone,

I've lost 81lbs and over 40+ inches. I've been eating clean for 1 week now. I do cardio daily and push wts at least 6 days per week.

I will not be in a comp...bad skin from being overwt for so long. Either way, I enjoy lifting and pushing myself to the limit. My recent goal is to drop my body fat % from 18.8 to 17%.

I've been with SP for almost 2 years and have enjoyed talking with others and giving them support as much as they have supported me!

I have a total of 5 kids...3 mine, 1 his and 1 someone elses(my niece!) Ohhh, almost forgot my 3 precious pups..Micky, Max and Merlin.

Hi Susie! emoticon

My plan was to only compete against the other "old" ladies but I got into the novice division and was competing against women who could be my daughters. I got a 4th in that division but it was so much sweeter considering the age differences.

As a side note - in the Masters 35+ division - I was the only one over 40 too emoticon in the "tall" division.

Good luck with your goals - you're doing GREAT and I'm sure you'll achieve whatever you set your mind to!

Thank You Wendy for the Invite!

My name is Susie. Not really new to sparkpeople, but I am new to this figure thing! LOL I have recently transformed my body and don't really know what to do with it yet! hahaha! OK, it's taken me a couple of months to see me as I am today!

I am married of 9 years with 2 children ages 6 and 8. I have been a yoyo dieter most of my life and usually heavy during the summer. This will really be my first summer EVER feeling really good about ME! I finally decided last year that I had to be first in my schedule...So, finally, I got my groove going!

My original goal was to compete in figure next year. I will be 40 in January and felt comfortable prepping for a masters class. (40 and over here) After attending Jen Hendershott's Phat Camp a couple of weeks ago, I was even more motivated to attempt it this year (even if I had to compete with the 20yr olds!) hehehe!

So, this is where my head is at! Just trying to gain as much knowledge about the sport as possible!

Currently hovering around 16% bodyfat and continuing a new plan that I designed myself to get that down lower before I start prepping for a show in November 09.

I am constantly changing my workouts up and I am a GYMRAT!

Thanks again!

Susie

Hello Everyone: I'm Heidi, a 41 year old SAHM with four kiddies. My husband and I have been together for almost 23 years and married for 15. I live in the sunny state of North Carolina, but was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. I have spent the last 6 months finally taking care of myself and shedding the fat. I am currently working to get my body fat to 15%! I have always had a huge interest in figure and am very interested in finding a competition somewhere within a few hours that I could train for over the next 8 - 12 months. I started this journey at 185.6 and 44.4% body fat and am currently at 140.6 and 27.8%. I am 5'2" and know that I have a lot of work to do to reach my goal.

I have talked with my husband about this, but I don't know that he realizes how serious I am about pursuing this. I have the BFFM eBook and while I find it to be extremely informative, I just don't even know where to start. I know that I'm going to have to jump in at some point and do all of the hard work of figuring out what works for me and what doesn't and honestly I am dreading it. Prior to November 1st I was one of those people who always said, "I am just too busy to count calories!". So, I did weight watchers unsuccessfully twice. I now count calories/keep a food journal daily. Counting calories is the one thing that has changed my thinking about food and empowered me to give up many of the items that I just can't afford to eat or drink. I get that piece.

I also have Tosca Reno's Clean Eating Diet and have incorporated a lot of her eating plan into my diet already. The flaxseed, bee pollen, wheat germ, steel cut oatmeal, 5 small meals a day, etc.

Any ideas on where to start? I'm currently doing P90X, Spinning, Running, and doing a circuit weight lifting class at the gym. Mid-May I plan to start working with free weights and dropping the weight lifting class since it obviously doesn't give you much control of your workout. It was a great place to start, but I've now outgrown it.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Heidi
