10 minutes at a time... that's the way to do it! And spark has a lot of good 10-ish minute strengthening videos. It seems like that would be good for your goals. As we get older, it's not just about toning, but about maintaining the muscles you need for functional fitness. You might want to talk to your doctor about your back to see if you can get a few sessions with a physical therapist to learn the right exercises to strengthen your back.
10 minutes a day is doable. I had to chuckle when I visited your spark page and under other information you listed what your interests are and also put now exercise. It can be fun - find something you enjoy doing or involve your wife in the routine or take walks.

Just turned 40, and ready to build a body I'm proud of. I do not have much weight to lose, but I do have a bad back, big gut, no stamina and a lack of muscle tone. 10 minutes a day sounds like a great place to start.
