I am doing 16/8 fast/eat - similar to leangains but with my own spin on it. I try not to eat after 9:30 or 10PM and then I don't usually anything until lunch which is usually after 1:30PM. I try to get in a 1 mile fast walk at least 4 days a week right before I eat my lunch. I also try to get between 1200-1500 calories a day (sticking closer to 1200)

I have been trying this for the last month after I realized I don't normally eat anything for breakfast except a cup of coffee. So far it seems to be working - down 22 lbs in 70 days (11 in 42 days) I have another 18 lbs to go till I am at my goal weight.

This doesn't seem like a diet and I am sure I can keep with it after I am at my goal weight. I am starting now to tone my body and hopefully get a lean sexy body.

Mine has become a bit of a hybrid! Basically the 5:2, fasting on Monday and Wednesdays, (my karate nights), and an added one Friday or Saturday as and when convenient. I fast from 5pm-5pm, eat 500 calories, then fast again till lunchtime the following day. I am amazed how well it suits me. Not only have I boundless energy, but I actually have to make sure I'm eating ENOUGH calories on a non fast day! Now there's a novelty! emoticon

Hi everyone!

I'm new to SP, but not to IF :) I lost 40lbs doing alternate day IF (as laid out in Dr. James Johnson's book, The Alternate Day Diet). Hit goal in March and have been experimenting with maintenance since then. Tried 5:2 IF for a couple weeks but continued to lose weight so then I went to one IF day a week. Still had weekly losses and now I'm below my goal weight. Really needing to stop the weight loss, so I'm now trying the 8/16 IF window. Since switching to this my weight has begun stabilizing and I think I've finally found my maintenance sweet spot :) My daily eating window is 11am-7pm and I usually eat two large meals a day, with no snacking.

Hi Carla,

Your results are extremely motivating and exciting at the same time. I'm on my first ESE fast today. It's really not that bad. I'm doing it from dinner to dinner. I hope this forum stays alive and well because feedback helps so much. I will be sharing my hopeful progress as well. Please come back and share more! :)

Hi everyone,

I've been doing IF since september 2012 after watching Michael Mosleys documentary. Since I wanted more info I searched the net and found Brad Pilons site. I downloaded his book, read it and decided to give it a go.
I started fasting 1 day a week but switched to 2 days a week after 2 months. I also skipped fasting during the holidays (X-mas and Easter) and a few times in Jan en Feb (it was just too cold !). I have managed to lose 6.5 kg ( about 14.5 lbs) so far which is really great for me since I have an underactive thyroid (makes losing weight extra difficult).
In the ten years I've been hypo I only gained weight, never lost any ... until now !
I do it on Mondays and Thursdays. I eat breakfast, then skip lunch and dinner, go to sleep and have breakfast in the morning again. This works best for me.
My husband starts after lunch until the next day lunchtime.
I prefer fasting 24 hrs as Brad sugggests rather than split 500 cal in two meals during the day (what most 5:2 dieters do).
I hope my bloodwork will show improvement in my cholesterol and sugar levels ! I plan to have it checked sometime in June.
Good luck to everyone, it really works !
Carla

Hello, this is my first post on SparkPeople. I was blown away when I recently viewed the BBC documentary on IF: Eat, Fast and Live Longer, with Micheal Mosley. I will be doing the 5:2 diet and I will also track my food. I am 47yo so I am doing this for the anti-aging benefits as well as the weight loss benefits.
I have started the fast today and will do a 36 hour fast: fast for the entire day with my first meal at breakfast the next day.
I look forward to reading other's experiences with IF; I know I have a lot to learn.

Hello folks.

About three weeks ago I started the 5:2 IF diet. A coworker was getting a good response from it so I decided to try it out. I haven't weighed in yet, so I've no idea how its going. First weigh in is likely to be tomorrow. I'm interested in ketogenic diets in general, but having a toddler means they're unlikely for a while!

I do three days of fasting each week. I drink Iced Jasmine Green Tea as well as water on my fasting days. I have been doing a form of this for over five years. I start my fast after dinner and go all day with my next food as breakfast on the day after my fast. This is about a 36 hour fast. Other times I did 500 calorie fasting days, but now I am happier doing zero calorie fasts.

Today I will not eat. I did not eat on Friday. My husband and I are doing this together. I like not having kitchen duty too! Cheryl

And if we can accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love... And we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts...”

My name is Dennis and I started intermittent fasting a week ago today. A little confusing the first day, but since then no problems. I am fasting from around 8pm until 1pm everyday. averaging 16-17 hours daily. First week weight loss of 7 pounds. I am eating the same diet I was before starting. Until I read and researched this program, i would have never believed it if some told me i could eat the same and still lose weight. The only concerns I have at present are macro nutrient based. I am trying to preserve/Gain muscle mass and need more info regarding that. I do a full body work out 3 times a week and 30 minutes cardio the other 3 days, Sundays off. I am hearing that macro nutrient intake should change based on the day but do not know any specifics. I have scheduled a body composition analysis for this week so going forward that will give me an indication of my progress. Any help regarding macro nutrient intake with regard to timing would be appreciated. Thanks to all and continued success.

I just wanted to try something different. I came upon the 8 Hour Diet and researched that.
Then I learned that there are other programs out there and basically it is a form of intermittent fasting. Yesterday I started on the plan of allowing eating for 8 hours (window is 12:30 PM until 8:30 PM)....so I am only on day 2. I was apprehensive to try this, but it is something quite different from anything I have ever done before and thought I might at least learn a few things about eating and myself. So far, what I have found is that it is a lot easier than I thought. I do drink a lot of coffee in the AM. Food tastes so good when you do get to eat, so you savor it more and really appreciate it. That seems to make it more satisfying. Plus, I think it gets one out of the habit of always thinking that food will solve a problem. It kind of puts food in its right place and frees your mind to do other things. Maybe all the coffee? As I say....I am only on day 2....but so far it is interesting.

Hi, I'm Evelyn from london in england. I am about to start the 5:2 IF inspired by a Horizon program on tv. I'll be eating for five days and fasting (500 cals) on two non consecutive days. I'm a Paul McKenna, I can make you thin, dieter, and I'll keep on doing that

Hi! I'm new here. I have done great with IF in the past, only to gain back 25lbs by abandoning IF. IF simply works! Anyway, I am currently doing daily eating windows from the afternoon to about 8pm, with one 24 hour fast. I will see how this works, as I have 90lbs to loose.

I used to fast when I was younger with good results. Lately I've been trying low carb. Getting results but not as fast as I wanted, and hitting plateaus. So I dusted off my fasting books from years gone by and started reading them yesterday. Being Lent, I started by not eating anything (just water) on Fridays. This week I added Wednesday. Great results! If all goes well, I may add Mondays. I 've lost like 7 pounds in just a week.

Having a target date for total knee replacement in April is fueling my initiative. I tell myself it's only 12-14 hours, between sleep cycles. I can do this. And I can eat whatever I want the next day. If I try to "cheat" (have a sip of this, taste of that) it just opens the floodgates for me. Sticking to water, keeps me on track.

I was so glad to find this Spark team!! Now I alternate eating low carb and fasting for a perfect combo! I never thought I would find a method of weight loss for me that I could live with and that would actually work. I'm ecstatic this could be it......

Hi! I've been on SparkPeople for a few years with intermittent use. I've just started a fasting-type program called Isagenix. I've been on it for a month and I'm down 15 lbs so far! It's good to see there are others that are using similar programs. I like the community-feel of Isagenix and SparkPeople. Thanks! I'm glad to be a part of the group!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the team. I used to use fasting a lot when I was single, but I am now in a relationship so its been harder. But my bf plays poker 1 or 2 night a week right now so I am going to fast those days, cause he will eat at the bar those nights.

My fasting days are gonna be Tuesday and Wednesday for the most part, but not always both days each week. It will vary. But it will be a whole day fast starting from supper the night before fast day to first meal of day after. On alternate days i will be doing the 17 day diet plan.

I have done quite a few of the different fasts people have mentioned, all depending on what was going on in my life, work schedules, and if I was in school and ect ect. You just have to find what works best for you and when things change reevaluate your fast to change it to accommodate.

So I fasted yesterday and today drinking only tea w sugar free creamer, water with lemon in it. I did eat a pickle and a bite of my BF mac and cheese at the timber-wolves game were were at last night. And I made flax bread today and ate 2 pieces with sweet hot mustard. But I'm not worried cal were only about 400, and most half of that is just from the creamer in my tea not solid foods, usually I am pretty strict but i feel really good about the last 2 days. so my first meal will be tomorrow now starting the 17 day diet .

It's not that hard once your body has adjusted to the rhythm. And it's definitely the healthiest way to do this.

Hi everyone,

I started intermittent fasting last August. The method I use has become very big in Austria (where I'm from), and all the research and people's experience show its big effectiveness.

So, I eat 12 hours and fast 36. That means you eat every other day. After 33 hours of not eating, a process starts in your body where your cells are being cleaned out and your fat cells are being consumed. Since you eat again after 36 hours, your body never goes into famine mode. After a few weeks, your body adjusts to the rhythm so that you're not hungry any more on the not-eating days.

This method makes you lose weight (while you can eat whatever you want on the eating days), makes you healthier, younger and live longer. I just love it!

Have a great day!

Claudia

Mecalisfit - that's an interesting diet. Definitely meant to suit certain lifestyles, as most diets are. All the best and I hope your journey is successful and painless.

I have found a site where there are stacks of diets. Is where I found The 8 Hour Diet, which is the one I'm using. Is at: www.everydiet.org/

Hello! I am new to fasting.... hopefully I can do it! I am going to be doing this one:
Alternate-Day Calorie Restriction -
www.johnsonupdaydowndaydiet.com/html/diet-
science.
I have been reading up on it and believe it is something I can manage... every other day keep to less than 500 calories. I am combining it with low carb, as that is the way I eat anyway.

Remember, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

Yep that wa my response - I need to be able to see whats working and whats not and to identify where I made mistakes.

If I eat too much/too little then I need to be able to see that.

My bodys gauge of fullness is a bit iffy lol so I need something that is reliable to help along the way. It gives me more confidence that I'm not over eating because left to my own devices I'd just keep on eating.

Luciasmum: Just do your own thing and try and ignore negative people and comments. Fast or no fast, I know I would never lose weight if I didn't count my calories every day. Just do it and ignore.

Like I said before, it's calories in vs calories out to make sure your differential is minus 500 a day or minus 3500 a week to lose one pound of weight. How on earth can you keep tabs on how you're progressing if you don't count calories.

Thank you - I just wasn't sure if I should be using the figures generated by sparkpeople based on 7 days of 'normal' eating or not. Its that bit that I'm finding slightly confusing at the moment.

I've asked other people and the responses seem to vary a lot.

I've also been lectured this morning by another IFer about counting calories and how it is counterproductive/against the point bla blah blah along with telling me how I feel - that really did annoy me because this person couldn't have been more wrong.

Luciasmum: Your targets are *always* important. Never lose sight of them. All the fasts do is help you stay well within your calorie range so makes the weekly deficit (calories in vs calories out) easy to obtain.

More ST is excellent. As you gain muscle and lose fat, your metabolism rises. I aim for 3 x ST every week and always have a rest day in between ST days.

Thank you :)

My partner is doing this with me too so its not so bad.

We've done all our fasts for this week now so will be starting again on monday.

No I haven't read that yet. I've heard a lot about it though. I'm a member on a facebook group that cover a few different versions of IF.

I'm doing ok today. Its a regular food day and I am so far within my targets - though if I'm honest I'm not really sure how important/appropriate they are now?

Also not sure what sort of a loss I'm looking at this week as I've been doing a lot more strength training than usual (not loads but before I did barely any).

Hello Cheryl, and welcome. I do 2 x 20 hr and 3 by 16 hr fasts every week. I have found that forgetting about it is the best idea, ie just put it completely out of your mind when you're on a fast. It gets a lot easier as the weeks pass.
Also have unlimited black coffee, green tea, sugarfree gum, plenty of water, and maybe diet cola.

I get negative responses too which doesn't help. I must admit tho' that my husband has never said anything 'against' my new lifestyle, but he also hasn't said anything 'for' it either, lol. The thing that really annoys me is when I get told that I am stupid because I am thin enough already! Oh, that really annoys as 'I' know what my BMI is and 'I' know what my healthy weight is, and 'I' know my own body, not THEM! Whew, had my rant, makes me feel better, lol.

Have you read Brad Pilon's 'Eat Stop Eat'. It was quite an eye-opener for me, and worth the read. I think he makes so much sense.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey and take no notice of negative responses... if you can. Just do your own thing and get on with your life. After all, it's YOUR life, not theirs, and you know what you want.

Hi emoticon

My name is Cheryl, I'm 29 and I have just started fasting.

I'm fasting for 2 days out of 7. On a fast day I am eating my last meal the evening before and fasting overnight until the evening again so that my total fast period is 24 hours.

I've only just started this week so any advice/encouragement would be great.

I heard about it through a friend and at first thought it was some odd fad diet but when I read more about it I began to realise that in my teens and early 20's I had fed that way without really thinking about i (and I had an amazing figure for it - I know that will never come back since having kids and I don't aim to be quite as slim as I was then).

I'm wondering how you all deal with criticism from others? I'm a bit weary of telling friends/family about what I am doing because I'm worried I'll get a hugely negative response.

Cheryl

Great job on the weight loss! emoticon Just be careful and treat yourself well. IF is a great tool for health, but if it makes you sick then it's counter-productive! I've been doing a lot of looking online at all the different types of IF that are out there, and I'm convinced that there's an IF that could benefit just about everyone as long as you find the right path. emoticon

I've had 27 terrible hours feeling and being ill. Just starting to come right now. I overdid everything including my exercising. I promise myself more sensible and careful treatment of my body in the future.

I shall stick with the ESE regime Sundays 6pm to Mondays 1pm and Wednesdays 6pm to Thursdays 1pm. To me that is easy to handle. And I shall not do hour upon hour of exercise on my fast days ever again.

There is awesome news tho' ... I've lost 8 pounds since last Sunday!!!

That's my favorite part of IF - every other life style change I've seen ADDS to the chaos of life because there's measuring, counting, etc etc. emoticon IF is so awesome to me because it's the only one I've seen that REMOVES chaos from life because if gives us one less thing to worry about... I don't have to plan/buy/cook things to eat when I'm fasting! emoticon

O wow, Motlem… that fishy taste doesn’t sound good at all! emoticon icky!

I was just going to pop over and see how you are doing! Oh boy, Yuck, you certainly learnt the hard way;) This will be my first week, I joined but as usual things changed and I was up to my neck in ..........! My sparking will be random, but I am looking forward to my new home and a new start it a couple of months. I am just doing a once a week fast for now and it wont always be the same day because of the chaos in my life. This has to work, it's the first diet I have seen that actually makes sense to me. Have a good one;)

Thanks for the welcome. I have 4 hours left on Day 2 but I feel positively nauseous. I took a fish oil capsule and that's all I can taste. I won't be taking them again on an empty stomach, that's for sure.

Just joined a minute or two ago, so hi from Tasmania, Australia.

My longtime Sparkfriend TDWANDD2MYK9 told me of the team's existence, and I am thrilled as I commenced the ESE regime last Sunday and my Day 2 of the 24hr fast starts in 25 minutes time.

This makes a lot of sense to me and it really suits my lifestyle. I have had a 'fat' Winter and, with 20 pounds to lose, needed a new setup altogether to get me boosted up again. So I can't wait to weigh-in on Friday to see how my first week went.

Anyway, I intend to stick to 2 x 24 hrs per week as I'm sure it must be good to give the body a bit of a rest too.

I am rather excited about it all!!

I am doing the ESE fast - 2 - 24 hour fasts a week got me to the lowest weight I have been since my son was born 21 years ago!! And its all downhill (or down on the scale at any rate) from here

New to this team, I've been tampering with different forms of fasting over the years. At the moment, I'm trying the "eat when your stomach growls" type of fast. I usually eat one meal every 24 hours. I thought about trying ADF too.

Hello! :) I just joined this group after discovering IF a few days ago. I started my IF adventure with Fast-5, and I'm very excited because I'm feeling as though I've discovered a life style change, NOT merely a "diet". emoticon

Anyway, I don't know how active people around here are, but I thought I'd just say hey anyway. emoticon Have a great Sunday, everyone!

I have been experimenting for some time with various IF plans. Fast 5 really isn't the one for me. I am drawn to E-S-E and the Eades' work. I have a long way to go before I can go 24 hours, though.

So I am a sojourner of sorts. I do know the benefits of IF have become evident to me in a number of areas.

Hi!
I'm new to this group. Have been with Fast-5 since April 2011 and lost about 25 pounds. I've found it so simple to follow..just one eating window a day. However, I DO have days where social situations require meals, so I am looking at ESE as a guide for those days.
Thanks for letting me join, and I'm hoping to learn lots hereemoticon

After having my last baby 2 years ago I had been trying to lose weight with no success. Then in just I started water fasting. I would allow myself juice or soft fruits if I thought I was going to cave. I give myself wiggle room. I have never fasted for longer than 10 days. I have lost 35 lbs. over 5 months and kept it off all thanks to fasting. My weight never would have budged if I hadn't fasted. I fast when I hit a platue. It but it and I start losing again! I love it. I have done alot of reasearch. And alot of the apposing argument about fasting I find is mostly unfounded. Fasting is one of the most fantastic things I have found in my life. It helps to quiet the body and the soal. Give the body time to clean and process from the day before and allows the stomach to stay at a healthy size and not over stretch. I have started another fast yesterday and plan on going for a few. Please do not judge me. I know what works for my body. I am not starving myself. I wish you all great sucess on your weightloss/health journeys!

Hi Everyone,

I started an IF plan 4 weeks ago and I originally started with a "eating window" of 8 hours/day. I did this for 2 weeks and then stumbled across the Eat Stop Eat plan. This is the start of my 3rd week of ESE and I feel great. I've been trying to get back into the shape I was in back in April. I don't have far to go but it's very difficult to lose bodyfat down to that level. This seems like it will work for me without having to do a grueling workout routine. I can do my normal workout and hopefully still get great results.

Great - fasting seems to be the key for weight loss for many people. i feel so bad for people who lose weigh and then put it back on and have to lose it again. But if people even did intermittent fasting part time, they would feel like the could control their fate a little more!

PS To my old SP friends - It's been a very rough journey... My beloved, healthy, athletic, tall, dark and handsome husband died in August 2012 from a very aggressive cancer... In the many months caring for him I was stressed and didn't "care" anymore, and put back on 30 pounds I had just finished losing... And then even 10 more in the first year of grief...

Hello,

My name is Cindy and I am doing the Eat Stop Eat (ESE) diet. Funny thing, I did this fourteen years ago and finally lost weight but I did not know I was doing this. I had dieted and exercised but could never get down to where I wanted to be - but then, I went through a divorce, was poor, and had a really hectic work schedule. Some days I ate only once a day and other days, I ate a couple of times a day. I was not even trying to lose weight, but I did! I actually got down to my ideal weight and I felt great! I had energy, I woke up rested, and I just overall felt healthier.

Years later, I started eating poorly and stopped exercising - and all the weight I lost found me! LOL - I mean it slowly came back on.

So the last couple of years, I have tried numerous diets without much sucess. Recently I found ESE and it just made sense. So I have been doing this for about a week and I am already feeling better! I also have lost a couple of pounds.

I am so glad that Spark has this team. I look forward to chatting with you all and best of luck to you. emoticon

Tuesdays are crazy days at work for me. I don't even really have a lunch and then I go to a yoga class after work. So I plan on fasting Tuesdays. I don't work on Wednesdays so I will see how I feel. I am going to try to eat really light Wednesday maybe just fruit and then eat a small dinner. I plan on giving up processed food for Lent which is in two weeks. I am hoping by combining the two, I can get off this plateau and finally get below 130 and stay there by Easter...

Hi, all. My name is Chris and I recently joined the team. I stumbled on the idea of primal eating and intermittent fasting a couple of days ago. While I'm not 100% on board with the PI, I think the IF is just perfect for me. Reading the medical studies was an eye-opener and really put to rest the scare theories that I have believed in the past about fasting, at least for short periods.

I looked at my schedule and how I deal with food emotionally. My plan is to do intermittent fasting 2-3 times a week at first. If that's too much, then I'll cut back to 1-2 days per week. I decided to do a full calendar day, not from evening to evening because I know myself. If I don't eat until evening, I'll overeat. But if I wait until the next morning, then I'm not as inclined to overeat.

Yesterday was my first day of fasting and I'll repeat tomorrow. It wasn't a big deal, although it was hard not to take a handful of popcorn when I made some for my kids as an afternoon snack!

Physically, I didn't feel hungry until the evening, but nothing huge. I did get INCREDIBLY sleepy in the evening. Normally I'd probably nosh on something to keep my energy up, but you know what? I just went to sleep at 9:30 after I read to the kids and slept through until 5:30 this morning. I was also really, really cold, but that's not totally unusual for me.

Started the day off this morning w/2 eggs, a double-fiber English muffin and an apple. I'm not restricting my food, just making sure I eat healthy overall.

I saw a new doc yesterday. I'm having a full range of tests run (thyroid, cholesterol, etc.) to see if I'm operating in tip top shape. I know I'm anemic so it's good to address whatever needs help so that I start this on a level playing field.

Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic. :)

If hunger isn't the problem, food isn't the answer.

I eat when I get home from work, but before 7pm. So Between 6pm and 7pm.. However, throughout the rest of the day, I drink liquid and I really do not restrict anything, but I try to stay away from soda and sugary drinks...

It is not uncommon to feel sleepy after eating certain or lots of foods. Lots of folks get sleepy a few hours after lunch or what about that sleepy feeling after a big festive meal. I can't explain the science behind it. I'm generally eating light enough these days that I don't get this effect.

I'm a little confused by your post. Are you fasting 7 pm to 7 pm?

I am back to striving for 2 meals - no snacks on most days. This seems to help me the most.

But I want to do one 24 hour fast day per week - and keep it under 500 cal.

And yes - I also try to eat clean - but I will allow occasional treats.

Does anyone else combine eating plans???

Fasting is great because once you make to decision to not eat, you don't have to worry about poor food choices. And Eat Stop Eat is easier to follow than Fast-5 or ADD's 500 calorie down day.

I love the idea of ADD though. It' SOOO much easier if I only have to be good today - tomorrow I can have ______.

I'm also trying to make my food choices more clean/paleo/natural. It's obvious that if it's full of chemicals it's not food. But I still can't get away from the convenience of meal replacement and protein shakes.

Do you do anything besides IF?

Hi all,

I've been doing ESE for a couple of months now...
I like to have a moderate breakfast and the fast until the next day's breakfast.

On other days I've been stopping at 2 Pm - so I have breakfast and lunch - as this keep my lungs clear for bed time (empty stomach)
If I veer away from this - I get symptoms...

Anyway - the weight is coming off, and I am very hopeful I can lose all the weight, and this will help with asthma.

The amount of calories depends on your activity level. If you don't excercise hard or often, you should be okay on that low of calories. Beyond 30 days, you'll want to re-evaluate. (Are you still losing? Do you feel hungrier?)

If the calories are too low, you'll naturally feel hungry. If you get to the point that you NEVER feel hungry, this is a warning sign that your body is in starvation mode. Anything below 900 you have to be careful with.

Happy fasting!

Thanks Bob. I was just unsure because I am eating well under 1200 per day -- about 700 - 900.. which is extremely low. I think because I am not eating all day (with water intake only), it's making me full fast in the evenings. So, I am a little leary that I am not getting enough in my body and when I start eating during the day again pulling my calorie intake higher, I may start gaining.

HELP please HELP! (smiles)

Hi Ms. Loti, I think that you have a great plan and if you stick with it, you will certainly lose a lot of weight. It looks like the foods that you are eating are very healthy, so I see no problem at all with sticking to your plan for 30 days. I wish you the best of luck!

I am new to this site. I started my fast last Wednesday and I am drinking water during the day and eating lots of fruits, vegetables and legumes in the evenings after 6:00 p.m. but before 9:00 p.m. I have incorporated fish and chicken and carbs on some days. I planned to do this for 30 days. But, I don't know if it's wise to maintain this program for this length of time. Does anyone have any advice about this?

Ah yes - it is easy to compensate when we change a diet - more treats when we find them.

Not eating eggs is somewhat philosophical, but I have never really liked any type of eggs anyway with the exception of egg yolks which I ate as a kid. I've been a vegetarian for 32 years. When I first became a vegetarian, I put on about 50 pounds within 6 months. As you said, I had that syndrome (and I suppose that I still do) of eat, eat and eat. I'll definitely try the whey protein at some point soon.

Yes...
I would suggest whey protein...
I've been vegetarian for about 35 years...
But about 9 years ago I started to eat fish - I simply needed it - long story. So I'm really a pescatarian.
But my husband and sons are vegetarian and they do fine.

Anyway - you might try the whey protein smoothie and add a little coconut oil to it for richness (on your eating days.) Add yummy berries or something.

Sometimes vegetarian guys really are not getting enough protein - so they eat eat eat

Do you not like eggs? They are considered the perfect protein - unless you react to them...
Or is it a philosophical thing?
We raise our own chickens...So we know our chickens are having a VERY good life.

That's a good point about the protein Mary. I probably don't get enough protein. I'm a vegetarian and don't eat meat. Even though I do eat products that have eggs in them, I do not eat eggs otherwise. I do have food in my diet that has a significant amount of protein such as peanut butter, nuts, tofu and yogurt, but I've never tried to make sure that I'm getting enough of it daily (or at least on my eating days). Maybe I should consider something like a protein shake?

Bob - you are doing great with this and you are finding what works for you...

Do you eat enough protein? That makes all the difference for me. My breakfast yesterday contained 3 eggs...plus other things. If I eat too many carbs - even healthy ones - I want to nibble all day.

You have found what works for you and it is considered the gold standard, actually! So that is good.

I think on my "normal days" I will stay with set meal times, too.

It's a work in progress....

Mary, a breakfast to breakfast fast sounds good. Having a good breakfast definitely is the best thing to do if you can do it. It gives you the energy that you need for the whole day. As for me, when I fast, I know that I cannot eat from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. Whenever I eat breakfast, it just triggers my appetite and I end up eating more the rest of the day. I try to fast three days a week. Since I still find myself bingeing at times on my eating days, I find that I will still gain weight if I fast only one day a week. If I fast two days, I will either be maintaining my weight or gaining, but if I fast three days a week, I do find myself losing weight. Bob

Hi everyone,

I love reading all of your posts...

Oolayla= yours sounds like Mastering Leptin - a very solid program...

I've done Alternate Day Dieting successfully - but I've been struggling with it lately. It did help me cure asthma 2 years ago and then I went of it (duh) last summer. I got VERY SICK this past winter and had to go on prednisone foe a little while. I gained 15 pounds and got very discouraged and plateaued... I went back on A.D.D. "seriously" three weeks ago and i have improved the asthma condition. But I seem to 'cheat' in the evenings - even half the time!

What I really like is 18 hour fasting (such as the 3 PM secret - or half day diet)...It's pretty livable as a daily schedule (eat morning and early afternoon - till 2 or 3 Pm - then fast til breakfast)

Or as a modified form: "Eat breakfastlike a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper." I've been training myself in this direction lately. I feel I needed training in how to eat in a healthy manner even while doing something like ESE. In other words - my "normal" days need some sort of restriction.

But I think I need a 'bigger hammer' to keep the asthma in check...So, enter ESE 2 days a week:

I've done ESE before, briefly - while also doing A.D.D - I used it as a way to do "Down Days" -

I feel that a good scenario for me now is this:

Do the 3 PM diet most days of the week...and do 2 24 hour fasts a week...

One thing that works pretty well for me is to have a decent breakfast of about 500-600 cal - and then fast until the next breakfast - so sometimes it might come in a tad short of 24 hours - but I'm not worried about that -

The benefit of breakfast to breakfast for me:

1) I'm not sleep in on the food, so to speak - and I think that is better for asthma and for weight loss.

2) It gives me a nutritional foundation for the day - so I don't feel as miserable or irritable...

I'm doing a breakfast to breakfast fast right now. It is 3:30 Pm and my stomach is growling a little - but I don't feel irritable or spacey...so far so good. I hope the growling passes!

Oh sorry for the blog!
LOL
Mary

I have become very mindful of what I eat on nonfast days. I had always mindful about eating until I started a doctoral program, then I was eating at crazy hours and drinking those high cal/fat lattes to stay away. The food changes coupled with a significant decrease in exercise lead to an extra 15 or so pounds on a small frame. I don't know if I will continue the 24 hour fasts. I might do mini fasts of skipping dinner.breakfast and going to lunch. I do see this as a rest of my life program. It works for me & I believe in sticking with what works. Have a great Thurs!

Hi Bijou! It's interesting to hear of someone who is using this strategy. Do you see this as a long-term behavior, as Brad recommends? Do you think your eating on other days has changed since doing this or were you basically eating pretty well before and would rather do this than cut down every day? emoticon

Hi, I have been doing ESE since March. I fast twice a week. It is easiest for me to do this on days I work in clinic. We are so busy that there is no time to eat. I feel great as long as the water bottle is handy. Down ten pounds!!

It is a myth that you can shrink the size of your stomach by eating less. What does change is your body's chemical reaction to food which can make you feel that you are very full. I find even "fasting" 5-6 hours between meals has affected how full I feel from my meals. I also find that if I have to go longer between meals and get very hungry, I feel I get full even faster, 9 times out of 10.

It would be nice if there was more going on here, but this way of eating is anti-thetical to so many of the recommendations made on the site that I don't think it will catch on very soon, if ever. Plus, you can't really tell the efficacy of any program until a person has maintained for at least a year. We can't really tell if we can keep using a program until the honeymoon phase is over and we have come back from a lapse or two. I'm glad if this is easy for some, but even Brad says you have to either have or develop decent eating habits in addition to IF to have any long term success.

I do have my settings so that I hear of updates here. I plan to incorporate one 24-hour fast a week at some point. I look forward to hearing of people's experiences, esp. after the fast is over. emoticon

Sounds great!! Actually I just finished a 10 day water fast and today starts my eat stop eat program. I will eat 1200-1500 calories a day during the week and then do 2 24 hour fasts a week. What are you doing and how is it working out for you? I am thrilled with fasting and wish I had found it years ago. I love the way my body actually feels after I come off of it and I don't think that this is the only time I do a 10 day fast. I am very proud and happy with my progress. The only problem I have now is working out. Hope to hear from ya soon...and again, I hope to hear from others as well lol.

Hi Just_Kelli...I wish that I could say that this was an active forum... Sadly you are only the second person that I have seen post (other than myself of course lol) since I joined and that was 10 days ago. I am going to find some extra time soon and go to the member's spark pages and let them know that we are trying to get this team going again and hopefully people will come back and start posting again. I know I could really use the team support. Anyway, in the mean time feel free to contact me, either here or on my spark page...either way I check both often. I would love to get to know you and help support you. Hope to hear from you (and others!! lol) soon.

Good morning everyone. I really hope this is an active forum =)
I'm currently following the Fast 5, but implement two 24 hr fasts per week. I started on April 21st and so far it is going very well. I totally love this!!! I've been able to overcome a few eating issues and recognize a few I didn't even realize I have/had =)

I'm still very new to SparkPeople. I joined a few months ago, but was inactive due to not taking the time to learn the site. Now that I have a real interest to discuss and share my IF (intermittent fasting) journey, I will take some time later to fill in more information about myself =)
My main goal this morning is to make this introduction.

Kelli

I am currently on day 6 of a 10 day water only fast and am loving it. Once the 10 days are up I plan to do 2 24 hour fasts a week following the eat stop eat program. I wish that I had thought about fasting a long time ago. I feel that I will be able to shrink my stomach with the 10 day fast enough that I will be able to eat normal size meals and be satisfied again. For years I have tried to lose weight but when I eat a normal size meal it just seems to make me hungrier. That is from 10+years of severe overeating. Well, I think I may finally have control again. I love this!!! I do hope that this team becomes more active because I know it would help me and I am sure it would also help everyone else to have people to talk to who understand what we are doing and what we are going through. So I hope to hear from yall soon...We Can DO This!!! GO TEAM!!! emoticon

Still doing 2 fasts a week too! 3 days of strength training, either on fasting days or eating days. I don't find that it makes too much of a differnce. Riding my bike and/or walking when I feel like it.
I try for 24 hours but sometimes it ends up being 22 or 23, and that's fine with me. I'm finding that it's easier for me to fast on a weekday when I'm at work...I'm mostly sitting around all day, and if I get chilly or antsy around hour 18 (usually the case!) I have unsweetened tea or carbonated water. I've lost 4 pounds, my tummy doesn't have the "old lady pooch" it had when I was eating all the time, and I'm SO much better at regulating my eating. It does also free up a lot of time and money!

I do 2 24 hours fasting per week. This helps me on my weight loss plateau. I've been following the Eat Stop Eat for a month now and I am very satisfied with the result. I love Intermittent Fastingemoticon

I'm still working up to a 24 hour fast. I've been using the No S diet--just "fasting" 5-6 hours between 3 meals a day, 5 days a week, since just after Christmas 2009. Brad claims that it's easy to go all day without food. I don't find that easy at all when I plan it, although I've had a few Mondays when i didn't even want to eat until the afternoon.

Even Brad says IT won't make up for crazy eating the rest of the time. I'm going to keep working on making at least one weekend day more sane before I push for IT. but I love hearing about all of you. emoticon

Alizaya, thanks for the comments. I finished my fourth fast yesterday night, and I have to say I think it's helped me lessen my deathgrip on food. I'm just doing two days a week, and will probably reduce that to one sometime. I feel great so far and I feel like I have a better handle on when I should and should not eat - or when I'm really truly hungry and when I really am just bored or want food. I've had to talk myself out of the disorder just about every day for the last decade or so, so I'm pretty used to recognizing the old patterns and smashing them. I'm definitely noticing that knowing I get to eat tomorrow or in a few hours is totally different than the ED "you cannot eat" self-talk.

if you have had eating disorders i do not recommend this to you..you will more than likly fall back into the same patterns and the same way of thinking as when you had the disorder.it sounds like you are very active in itself sooo keep that up..

I just did my first fast (admittedly, made it to 22 hours before I broke down and had a latte...) after reading Eat Stop Eat. Wondered if there was a spark team and lo and behold, there is! I'm a little concerned because I have a history of anorexia and bulimia, but I think I'll be fine. I lift 3x a week (doing Rachel Cosgrove's "fit female" program, it's fun!) but lately I just feel like I've been eating far too much and too often. Going 22 hours without anything has been pretty refreshing! I want to fast 2 days a week but will see how I feel about that on Wednesday.

I started fasting with the Fast-5 program. I'm currently using that basis every other day for a total of three to four 19 hour water fasts each week.

Fast-5 didn't work for weekends - at least not every weekend. And I wanted to find a balance I could live with for life, not have to adjust again when I reach my goal.

One month in, and WF on alternate days is GREAT!
