Hi camey...welcome..yes they put you on antibiotics..two hefty ones I might add..I had a cat scan and a colonscopy which was grueling and made me sick as a dog..but they told me what I already knew I had diverticulosis again..lol...once you get it you get it again and again if you are not careful with what you eat...i think its the crunchy peanut butter i had everyday that gave it to me again.....

When do you have your colonoscopy? I was in the hospital for 4 days with pain in my colon. They had a narcotic ordered for me so I was glad I was able to ask for it for pain so part of the night I got some sleep. I wish you well on your coming test.

Be blessed!

Did you ever try drinking 5 or 6 glasses of water, a day. The doctor told me to do that and I have no problem, in the morning, with going. Before I did that I was constipated. Somehow the water lubricates the system.

Diverticulosis is the name of the condition when a person has diverticulum (picture small balloons) which has formed on the weakened outer wall of the large intestine. They are most frequently found in the area of the sigmoid colon which is the area of your lower left pelvic region; however, they can be found in any portion of the large intestine. Diverticulitis is the condition which develops when one or more of the diverticulum become infected. It is not recommended that you tough it out. To my knowledge, most if not all flareups require the appropriate antibiotics. If you have pain which is causing you to double over, I strongly suggest you contact your gastroenterologist for an examination. My brother ignored his pain, and the diverticulum ruptured landing him in the hospital. It might not be diverticulitis but something else like a hernia, muscle strain, gall bladder issues, pelvic floor issues, etc. I'm not a physician. Good luck!

I've been diagnosed with diverticulitis but have never had an episode that I've gone to a dr. for. I've had severe pain, but just toughed it out. I think the last time I had severe pain, I didn't realize or remember that I had diverticulitis. Don't remember as it's been a couple of years. My gastro had done a colonoscopy and told me that I had diverticulitis while I was still groggy so I don't really remember it. We talked about it at the follow up visit.

I've found that as long as I keep myself regular (hard for me to do) that I don't have problems with certain foods. I have to remind myself to eat fruits & veggies.

Although, yesterday evening I was in pain. As long as I was sitting up straight I was find, but if I stood up, I was almost doubled over. Don't know what it was, lasted a couple of hours then it was gone. Sometimes it just feels like my colon gets knotted up.

In April I went through the course of antibiotics although I had no fever and not the significant pain of my prior episode in 2009. I just had lower left quadrant pain. The doctor prescribed the course and I rested my colon and my body with no exercise. Even the CT Scan was negative for inflammation the day after I started the therapy. Just had my fourth colonoscopy (age 47), and we are now very certain I did not have a diverticulitis! I have a few diverticulosis pouches but nothing compared to what she has seen. ALSO NO POLYPS this time!!! My Dad died 25 years ago from colon cancer so this was overwhelming for me getting a pass. I am a heavy eater of nuts and seeds; however, I still avoid sesame seeds when possible as well as sunflower seeds although probably safe for me. The key is to consume that high fiber diet when you are not flaring so the little fellows cling on and pass through. Just my opinion.

Well, the fiber passed on through without a hitch. I was fine. I've also eaten nuts, strawberries, and sesame seeds with no issues. Haven't tried corn or popcorn yet tho. We'll see.

My current doctor says that seeds and nuts do not cause diverticulitis. However, you must avoid them and other fiber type foods for about 30 days after having an episode with antibiotics. You need to heal with bland type foods first and then introduce slowly to your normal diet. That has been my experience. Do not worry about the scope. With twighlight sleep, it is over in a blink. I just re-started spark people today after learning earlier this week that I likely have diverticulosis. I'm currently getting over an episode of diverticulitis, on antibiotics. My doctor is in the process of setting up a colonoscopy for me. Not looking forward to this!

I've been doing research online about this condition, and I've seen that there's some debate over whether seeds like tomato or strawberry actually cause episodes of diverticulitis. What have your experiences been? What are trigger foods for you?
