On the exercise: Make sure you do everything you can to find exercise you enjoy. It does not have to be something you would in a gym. Go through all the olympic events in your mind or look them up online and pick something you think you might like to try. In some cases you have to work up to it, which might give you motivation to do the necessary prep work as in strength training and basic cardio. Walking is always great as a base.
I've done things as diverse as running, horseback riding, swimming, roller blading, ballet and now track and field. I'm having a blast. Someday I'll be ready to try rock climbing.
You only live once, so you'll have to fit it all in. emoticon
Josephsmum,
how do you make paleo porridge. I've never liked regular porridge or any hot cereal but since this one must be without grain I might give it a try.

Well you know whatever starts in the US will eventually take off here in the UK. emoticon

I just made a bowl of delicious paleo porridge. Now I know it works I will weigh out the ingredients from cups to grammes to make it easier to prepare in future, especially when in a hurry at breakfast time.

One of the joys of having a cat, I don't have to venture out if I don't want to, which I've learned living in Glasgow since Oct of 07 is always a wise choice.

Keep warm and good luck with the Paleo.

Send me a friend request if you want someone in the UK who is going through it. Happy to pass on anything I've learned, all though I'm only a novice but I know I would have liked someone in this country to help me initially. Seems to be mainly the States that people are gungho about it.

Thanks, I will pop over to Amazon after I have taken my Mutt for his last walk as it's not raining or snowing at the moment. I am just about to don my winter wax, which hides sooo much;)

I actually bought my Paleo for dummies book, though it's actually not called that its called Living Paleo for Dummies!! I got it on Amazon for 10.23 as thought it would probably be a book I will go back to regularly, and I have so far,

I found it to be a very helpful book as it told me everything I needed to know, the logic and science behind it. The good and bad foods, what to expect when I'm on it especially the first 30 days, how to not fall of the Paleo wagon and recipes as well as how to eat out Paleo. If you can afford it I'd buy it as really think it's a book that you need to have on your bookcase, or in my case the bedside table.

It's not an easy diet to get your mind round as I find myself doing stuff that I would do on other diets, like for instance eating lots of fruit. But after 4 days all though I don't see any change in my weight I do in the look of myself.

Good luck if you do decide to do it.

As to the weather in Glasgow we have been lucky with the snow this year as in we have had none it all went to the east coast, but I've been joking that we would probably get it in June and hey ho looks like it's coming early!! Oh well at least I can hide my blubber under 5 layers of clothing!! Got to love the UK!!

After years of pain and illness, I read about the Paleo Diet, logged on to SP and found this group. As yet I know very little, but the little I have read makes complete sense. I love the Idea that you can get Paleo for dummies and am going to ring the library to see if I can order it tomorrow morning. Any other books anyone can suggest, I would be most grateful.

I am in S.W UK and although it's meant to be summer we have had high winds and snow and the Met inform me it's heading to Scotland;)

RE: Exercising.

During carb flu you should not do anything strenuous, do what you can... walking is fine. However, to get the overall health benefits from this and any diet, you must exercise as often as physically possible. both strength and cardio. (... strength training is important because as you lose weight, doing cardio only, your skin can lose its elasticity; strength training will help to tone the areas where you lose the excess fat. That's why scale weight is not the whole picture, if you are building some muscle, you may weigh more, but actually drop dress/pants sizes.

For strength training you can use bands, tubing instead or as a compliment to the free weights. Check out some of SP's strength training and other videos :

Got to say I'm not much on the exercise. I did try the other day to watch and do some Davina cardio boxing but think the carb flu was zapping any energy I had so I sadly stopped after 20 minuets!! But I am planning on giving it another go next week. Kind of waiting on the carb flu to stop making me feel so crap.

I do live in the City Centre and don't have a car so I do walk everywhere if I can, which in Glasgow weather is not always the most enjoyable but if I want to get some where it's the most economical way to get there. If the weather ever gets any better I plan on trying to walk every day for an hour whilst I'm unemployed but when it's cold and wet and windy which it has been recently I do take the easy way out and stay in, hence the attempt at the Davina dvd!!

But I hope as I start to feel better within my self, hopefully next week to start Davina again and hopefully more walking. emoticon

Sounds like you have some great plans and will probably see significant results even before the end of the first month. emoticon
What are you doing in the exercise department to move in the right direction?
Even small, and very gradual increases in exercise (low-level cardio) will yield big results on paleo because your body now actually has energy to burn (which it often does not on low-fat diets where all the energy is stored as fat).
You can also add a little strength training to improve your body composition faster. Even twice a week for 20 minutes can make a lot of difference.
Keep sharing and reading,
Cheers,
Birgit

Thanks for the welcome.

I won't give the scales away to someone I don't like or to someone I do because I want to jump on them at the end of the 30 days and hopefully see some loss of weight. But as has been pointed out on here it's better to go with the physical aspects and how I look and feel than what a digital number on a machine is telling me!!

So the scales have been put away in the closet and will be dusted off in 25 days!!

I think in the past when I have dieted it's always been about how much weight I have lost that has been the gauge of if I am doing well on a diet or not, but I am learning that Paleo is not a diet alone!! emoticon

Thanks.

I think I need to accept that all though I keep reading all these great stories about how people lost weight and got healthier on Paleo they have been doing it for longer than 4 days!! And as you said it's taken me bloody years to load it on so got to accept it's not going to be a fast coming off!!

I also have noticed some changes in the way my clothes fit so it does give me incentive to keep at it as it's not like people know how much I weigh when I meet them but their eyes don't lie so would rather then tell me I look better than I did!!

I sadly due to sinus issues can not eat cheese or any dairy, though have never been told this by anyone medical, just something I have surmised after suffering and doing google searches and finding out that it does effect your sinuses. So I can't do the dairy for my treats but I'm going to do some chocolate after my 30 days!!!

Thanks for the welcome and the support. emoticon

Thanks for the support and I have now put the scales in the back room closet so they are harder for me to get to!! I have noticed a slight change in how my clothes are feeling, for instance today I am wearing a top that the other week was way too tight and I thought I looked like a sharpai puppy in!!, today it's not showing the muffin tops as much!! So I will be stronger willed and not go near the scales again till the weigh in day after doing Paleo for 30 days. emoticon

I just commented on your blog and wanted to say welcome here, too.
I love the idea of giving your scales to someone you don't like. emoticon
I have found it to be pretty useless once I got closer to goal.

Hi, JAZZID is right, you need to give yourself time emoticon

I have been on and off the low-card bandwagon for a few years, but since going Paleo and completely wheat-free I don't get the nasty cravings I used to.

Been back on the Paleo bandwagon again for 4 weeks, and am doing an 80/20 style that suits me as I cannot do without dairy. I don't get any reactions from eating cheese and yoghurt, so treat this as my 20% non-strict area.

I feel so much better, and my wheat-belly is shrinking nicely even though I have only lost about 4lb in weight when I jump on the scale. My clothes are not so tight, so I am know I am doing ok and I am not hung-up about the scale not moving very fast any more.

Stick with it - it took a long time for the weight to creep on, so it will take a good while for it to creep off again emoticon

Good Luck... and as Robb Wolf (The Paleo Solution) says... "get rid of the scale and give it to someone you don't like!" emoticon ... but seriously, don't rely totally on scale weight. You are early in this journey so I would say give yourself the full 30 days to see a change. Look also for changes in how your clothes fit and as far a fitness are you making fitness gains, etc. Scale weight is just a small part of a bigger equation so don't set yourself up for disappointment.

Keep up the good work. ~ Dee emoticon

I can't give up my pot of coffee in the mornings though pretty sure it's not completely kosher but I have started drinking green tea in the afternoons where I would normally drink coffee. During my searches today I found a lot of people on Paleo sites that said you shouldn't really do shakes as it doesn't allow your body to break down the food right and leads to fat storage!! I confess I don't really understand the whole science behind it but I had gotten used to doing a shake in the morning. So what I might do is what you suggest maybe every other day with my pot of coffee. Though have to say the thought of coffee, spinach and avocado does not sound appealing but I'll give it a try. Thanks and I'll certainly try to come to the site everyday. I did just blog but I have a bad habit of being all gungho about stuff then loosing interest, but I will certainly try and join in when I can. Thanks for the info. emoticon

All of us vary our approach a bit, depending on our specific needs. I have to be aware of too much fruit too. I still drink caffeine, so I make my morning shakes with coffee, unsweetened almond milk (just a dash), 1/2 an avocado and a giant handful of spinach. Then I toss in unsweetened cocoa sometimes, or some organic vanilla extract. Yummy and filling, and I just eat a couple of scrambled eggs on the side for the protein. Fills me up nicely until lunch usually :)

Good luck and the more involved you get the better for us all!

I came across the Paleo diet, or should that be life style change by accident.

I'm a long time sufferer with weight issues as well as sinus issues and HS, and it was through my google search on HS that I found a woman who was suffering with HS like I was and had found through doing Paleo that when she cut out potatoes she cut down and eventually got rid of her HS symptoms. She also was very vocal in what a difference to her weight and over all well being she noticed on Paleo. So I then investigated Paleo even more and everything I read made sense.

So I bought the Paleo for dummies book and a couple of Paleo recipe books and bookmarked some sites on the internet cleared my flat out of all non Paleo foods purchased as close to Paleo meats as I can find in Glasgow and started on Saturday the 11/5.

I measured myself, weighted myself and much to the disgust of my cat took photos of myself from all 4 sides in the mirror!!

Starting my 5th day today I took a wee sneak on the scales, even though I said I wouldn't till after the 30 days, and damn my dismay when I saw I had not lost anything, though visually I am looking a wee less Shamu like and I feel lighter!!

So I then did another google search to find out the reasons and realized that it was because I was making fruit smoothies each day for breakfast and turns out fruit in the amounts I was taking it was bad due to the fructose!!

So I decided to then do a google search for specific weight loss Paleo recipes and found this site so decided any help or encouragement I can get the better.

So I'm new to this site and new to Paleo. Not sure how much I will join in discussions but pretty sure I will be lurking in the background.

Let's hope my adventures into the life style change to Paleo are positive.
