LITTLETEAPOT, I would do what you can to maintain Paleo and not worry as much about the reset. Dr. Kruse warns against protein powders himself due to the insulinogenic qualities of whey. If you physically can't eat in the morning, what about trying a green smoothie and maybe adding in some egg whites or something so you can't taste it. OR puree something you like that has protein...add almond milk, broth or water and puree it til drinkable. Just a thought.

A smoothie sounds wonderful but how do I get the 50 grams of protein that I need for the Reset?

I too try to avoid foods that are processed, so protein powder would not be in my plan. Littleteapot - have you tried or considered some other version of a smoothie in the morning - maybe a green smoothie - just google green smoothies - you'll find some recipes that include more unprocessed foods - just be aware that some have a lot of fruit - just a consideration

Thanks!

I want to AVOID it and goodness knows, I'm apt to try most anything. One point to ponder: it shows ONE ingredient...kinda wondering if that's not "too much?" You know what I mean? Like whatever they recommend as a dose is CRAZY too much?

Like any protein supplement that gives over 20g per serving: your body can only digest (break down to USE) so much protein.

I've seen hugely varying amounts named but for BODYBUILDERS, they can handle more. For a large dude (or girl), they can handle more. Excess is EXCESS: will end up as fat if not used for rebuilding muscle but it's debated if it actually does harm. Wanted to mention that because a) like I know what I'm talking about?! b) I see experts debating it, so I'm not sure they "know".

I'm wondering if it was the fibre and protein that messed you up? Anyway, I'm avoiding that one!

LILY it was this one. I had to throw it out after several tries. Same thing with the Vega one, I was running for the bathroom ALL day! emoticon

Cindy,

I'm with you on eating "real food" (I've pretty much stopped even doing Paleo "versions" of non-Paleo foods cos it's bother and only sets me up to whining about not being able to eat ___!

I'm wondering what kind of hemp powder you tried? Mine contains hemp, cocoa & palm sugar (not Paleo but it's the last ingredient and believe me, this crap isn't tasty). I've only used 2 scoop over the past month but it's good if I'm too tired to cook and know that I need "something." Maybe I just haven't used enough of it to see any reactions!

Thanks everyone, I may try to find some egg protein powders. But no I can't eat at all in the AM. My band is tight from lying down all night and any food just gets stuck and I have to throw it back up. So I am forced to do liquids in the am with some kind of warm liquid to help loosen the band.
By lunchtime I'm good to go--small bites, eat slowly and chew chew chew, but am good to go.

I generally advise against something so processed as a protein powder on a reglar basis, but if you really CANT eat, then I guess it is bette than nothing. If you toerate whey OK then fine. I would try an egg one as well, as it is closest to nature. I tried several when I was doing such things and the hemp and Vega ones tore up my stomach! I did OK with the egg ones and the brown rice, which is not paleo either really. I just went to making breakfast ahead and ready to go so I had no reason to need it.

I just started using hemp protein. It's gritty but I also don't use it all the time...It may work for somebody?

There are protein powders made from eggs instead of whey or soy. You might want to look into them. I know nothing about them except that they exist.

Small amounts of dairy work for some people and not for others. It seems to me that Paleo/Primal is really a framework, not a prescription. There are definitely some foods that are unhealthy for most of us (wheat/grains, legumes, sugar), however, there are also some that can be tolerated or have no apparent impact.

It's really a matter trying and tweaking. One method is to remove it all, al la Whole 30, then systematically add foods back in to see if there's an impact.

For me the most relevant question is "what is healthiest for me"?

For me health transcends the number on the scale - body comp is a better indicator of health (BMI is an almost useless concept cause it ignores so many variables - not that I don't watch mine anyway). Energy, lack of inflammation and healthy blood profiles are all high on my radar of indicators of health. OK - done preaching, for now.

It's a journey of discovery and we are an N=1 experiment.

Stay Strong

Oh, I wasn't trying to catch you - tha's funny. It's almost like we are playing tag between the two teams now.

I was just wondering because I do have hypothyroidism so I try to stay away from soy, and I use whey protein. Just didn't know if there was another one out there that I hadn't heard of yet. Mine is very low carb high protein too - I don't remeber the numbers because the plastic wrapper came off when I opened it the first time. I don't drink shakes every day - my band is loose enough I can eat in the morning (probably not something like steak though, but eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt - I'm not too keen on giving up dairy).

Thanks for the warm welcome all of you.
Oops Anita you got me! I am not completely dairy free because i forgot about the protein powder.
I use Dymatize ISO-100 and here is the breakdown per serving:
100 calories
24 g protein
1 carb
0 fat
0 lactose
the ratio is 86% Protein
I have used the Gourmet Chocolate since my band surgery and use 2 scoops in am for the 50 grams of protein to start my day per the leptin reset.

I put it with my unsweetened almond milk and am good to go.

It does say though on the back that it has milk and soy but it's the best I can do cause I can't eat solid food in the am. My band is too tight then.

hope this helps!
hugs, paula

Hi Paula!

My goal isn't losing weight (exactly--except that I put on a layer of fat earlier this year that I'm still working on getting rid of!) but health. I have a bunch of genetic junk...

I knew that I couldn't do dairy since I was a baby (I did soy formula--40 years ago!) but I grew up with grass-fed dairy (and meat), living in the Ozarks on a working ranch.

Since removing triggers, then learning Paleo is basically what I do (except I have more restrictions), I tried adding GRASS-FED dairy. Body no likey! So, back to dairy-free for me!

I'm so happy it's helping you, too! emoticon

Hi Paula! Nice to see you on this team too. I have been a "lurker" here, trying to learn more about the paleo eating/lifestyle. I haven't actually made a move in this direction yet, still just a run-of-the-mill low-carber.

I wanted to ask, you mentioned that you don't do dairy anymore, and from what I am reading, soy is off the table too - so what kind of protein powder do you use? I have only come across soy or whey, and whey comes from dairy. Is there another kind out there?

WOW - thanks for sharing your story. I have been following MDA framework for about 8 months and very happy with the results - have thought about whether leptin reset should be the next step for me. Glad you wrote about it - gives me more fuel for my deliberations

Hi everyone,
I have recently gone from Primal to Paleo in 8 months and love the way I feel. I found Robb Wolf from reading all of MDA's stuff and I have to say, since I took the dairy out of my life, I am losing again.

I started the Leptin Reset 7 days ago using the Paleo food lists on Robb's website and I have already lost 8 more lbs. I am sure getting the junk out of my body caused the swelling and inflamation to go down thus water loss as well and a few lbs was probably real fat.

I have lost over 91 lbs so far and need about 50 more to lose for my height (I'm a shorty). Anyway I know Paleo will take me the rest of the way and keep me there for the rest of my life.

I had lapband surgery 2 years ago and it has helped me some but it's not the answer of course. Eating right and exercising is always the only way that being healthy for life can happen. It just has to be your way of doing things. I wish someone would have told me about this lifestyle before surgery!!

Just wanted to join this team for more support and ideas.

Hope to meet you all and can't wait to learn more about Paleo.
Hugs, Paula
