I posted the comment about fasting during biking in our crossfit discussion and let my trainer know I quoted her on here and this is what she had to say.

Nicole Picknell
"Ok do this is how I read that. He rides before he eats breakfast. Yes I workout pre breakfast when i am trying to cut weight. It can be beneficial but has high risk with some results. His 16 hour fast. Well most if us get 12 anyway. Right. Think about it last email at 6 wake up workout next meal at 8am. After workout well that's a 14 hour fast right. I have a doc I'll look up done by precision nutrition talks Bout tricks like that and wether its high risk low results or high risk big results. Trust me if there is a trick to fat loss the body builder do them all
I want to make a big statement right now!
It does not matter what trick or fad we all want to try to increase fat loss it's all about whole foods and getting the sugar out. Stabilizing blood sugar with balanced meals.
Pleas everyone just follow paleo. If u r not losing weight if because ur probably eating too many nuts or drie fruit or your not really eating paleo.
I think thi discussion is good but I'm a little concerned with the thought that fat loss comes from fasting.
Be careful. Starve the body and u will retain fat!!! The body is made to hold onto fat for survival.
Also let's just say it worked. The rebound is awful. People try tricks all the time only to gain 10-20 lbs more than when they started.

So my advice all
Just trust the paleo and the zone
That is all!"

I can't imagine working out for a few hours on no energy after already fasting through the night, when I was running I ran for 2-4 hours and I would bike about the same I always had a good breakfast before and GU during and eat after. You are burning way too many calories and your differential is WAY off and thus your body will think it is being starved and hold fat.

Funny, my crossfit box just had a forum about fasting versus eating right after workouts today actually. This is what our trainer had to say. It could be different since Crossfit is such a hign intensity sport that uses a wide range of muscles and also breaks them down, but running and biking breaks them down as well.

Nicole Picknell

"You need to replenish your nutrients post workout. You will see fat loss due to better diet better meal timing. Not only to gain muscle but also repair muscle with post workout meal. With crossfitters u are constantly tearing down muscle and repair is how we create more Muscle. This is a must. Remember how sore you said u were on the whiteboard? If you recover faster and is u make

More lean body mass you WILL be able to workout more. And the more muscle
Mass you have the more fat you will burn all day long.Trust me I am a body builder and work with fitness figure athletes our goal is to burn fat and keep muscle. This article may benefit someone that is lean and needing to strip last bits of fat racing purposes or showing purposes.

In the gym, our gym it's all about getting people to eat the right foods and time
Them all day long with the 5 meals per day.

Now their is some Science that intermittent fasting helps move metabolism BUT noone should fast until they do paleo for 2-3 months. Serious damage can happen if people fast to soon.

My recommendation Is to have a good quality protein after a workout. I am researching whey protein that is more available to the body. We will be looking at about time whey, biotics whey and progenix whey to have t the gym.

If you can't do whey it's fish or egg whites.

Now as for the carb. Robb wolf have a different opinion. He thinks no high sugar post workout. So let's continue this topic.

Everyone should see fat loss just by crossfitting and eating Paleo. If they are not they need to come see me and I need to see what they are eating.

Any athlete must eat post WOD to repair the damage and recover in order to wake up and do if again md balance blood sugar.

Yes increase in metabolism is a given with Crossfit style or HIIT training.
This epoc (look it up) will benefit your fat burning throughout the day.
You MUST maintain the muscle otherwise you are going backwards.
In fact body builder athletes and figure girls actually increase allows to lose fat and play with macronutrients timing and type. They would never miss a meal because it's detrimental to the Muscle we worked so hard to make."

Below is the link she is referring to. I eat right after WODs because I am on pain pills for my knee injury and get really sick if I don't, also because I can't imagine not eating. When I ran I needed at least GU every hour or so. Fasting wouldn't work for me, and since I am involved in not 1, but 3 high intensity sports I think eating after workouts is best for my recovery, and during once I get back to running and biking.

CLASH12

I mountain bike ride between 1 and 2 hours 5 days a week and I ride fasted.

I practice an 16/8 intermittent fast. I fast for 16 hours and feed for 8.

I have found I am building more muscle by riding fasted in the morning and then eating a breakfast with lots of protein immediately after the ride.

I have some carbs but usually only about 20 grams.

Just last week I started adding some ST after my ride and before breaking the fast. Too soon to report results on this part of the experiment.

Sadly none right now, I will be getting knee surgery shortly. I wasn't Paleo when I was running, but after surgery and rehab I fully plan to stay Paleo and sustain through sweet potatoes and steak which have been my post-workout meal for crossfit lately. I haven't had issues so far and my crossfit WODs are crazy, I may allow GU and Gatorade or protein powders if that doesn't sustain me. I also eat a fair share of larabars which are paleo and I have ordered some of Steve's Original Paleo Pack's to try out. I used to run with Perky Turkey so maybe jerky would work just fine.

I was logging 30-40 miles a week, with a 14-16 miler on Tuesdays, a 5-7 miler in there and the rest were 2-4 milers.

When I did long runs I ate a Paleo breakfast actually (not on purpose), and a GU every 45 minutes, I had Perky Jerky and Trim OS sticks as well so for the most part (other than the GU) I was a pretty Paleo runner. After runs, I ate normal, I did eat pasta a lot though. I have found a Paleo Pasta, that has a tiny amount of quinoa flour and xanthum gum in it- but such a small amount that the sanopins (sp?) shouldn't be an issue- the only reason Quinoa is banned as it is a seed not a grain. I may try that.

@resenphoenix - How many miles you logging? Do you eat carbs before longer runs?

http://www.paleoblocks.blogspot.com/ Was very helpful for me when I was trying to figure the whole thing out, not that I am not still trying to figure it out since I am only just a few weeks in, but I haven't cheated at all and I am down 15lbs so I'd say it's working. Good luck!

My boyfriend and I read a book about the Paleo diet and decided to give it 30 days just to see how it was and what it might do for us. Where is a good comprehensive food list?
