Hi everyone, I've been learning about the Paleo Diet recently and it seems so potentially healthy and helpful -- I thought I'd join up here to learn from your experiences. I'm all ears (eyes?) emoticon

Hello team!
My name is Michael, I have been reading up on the paleo lifestyle for a few months now and am ready to take the plunge. I was a skinny 6ft 175lb teen. I injured my knee and stopped running my senior year. I never really ate junk food, but I did eat around 80% carbs and steadily gained each year. I got married in 2009 and hit my high of 233lbs right before my wedding day. I started eating whole grains and lost 8 pounds, but hit a wall the past year. My wife and I had our first child in September and now I need to lose weight for myself and my new family.

When You Started Paleo: Yesterday, 3/1/11
Why: I'm doing a 30 day challenge with my brother and boyfriend to improve our health and cut out some of the junk we're prone to eating. My brother and I are carb addicts and my bf hates vegetables with a passion. I'm hoping that eating paleo will jump start my metabolism and help me lose my last 15-20 pounds over the course of the next 2-3 months.

You are the only one that can pull yourself up out of the mud! Stay focused; keep your head in the game. You can do it!!!

JACKFAT2 I almost never tell people in my real lifeI am on Paleo Diet. I say I eat grain and dairy free and stick to the basics because I feel better that way. I bring my Celiac and dairy allergy into it the most and I get a lot less nasty comments.

Hi everyone. I started to try Paleo about March 2011. Since then there have been on and off periods, probably slightly more off than on. In January I started a performance nutrition challenge and to win you have to eat strict Paleo (although we don't call it Paleo). I'm currently in the school of wanting to get away from the caveman aspect and emphasize that this is just a way of healthy eating. I even made up a name for my dietary standards. I eat an 'anti-inflammatory diet of whole foods devoid of neolithic agents of disease'. Maybe I'm a bit cra'y, maybe not. I like eating this way because for as long as I can remember I was lethargic. When I eat this way, I have energy, I am more enthusiastic, and life seems so much better! Freedom from tiredness is a huge relief.

I always had a distended bloated stomach akin to a starving person in a 3rd world country. I am actually going to be doing a month of paleo/primal in an effort to feel better and get the grains and sugar out of my life! From there I can decide what to do next if it helped.

I am new to this way of eating and i am bit scared. I need to lots of help. I am not big fan of meat but i am going to try. Today i join another team Primal Lifestyle too. I hope i get to know you all and get all the help i need.

Over the past year I have slowly been leaving processed foods behind. I know in my head that those things are bad for my body. After lots of research and talks with my hubby we have both decided to go primal/paleo to get our health and weight under control. We are on Day 2 and so far so good. I look forward to getting to know everyone and joining in and learning more from those more experienced in this lifestyle.

Hi Sam and welcome to the team! I'm new here too and Paleo just makes perfect sense, doesn't it? I envy you on the farm with all those grass fed animals! I'm on the search for healthy meats and eggs here or maybe I could order some...hmmmmm.

Thanks! I will try to make my own for now. I live to far from the city & nearest "Sprouts" I only take a drive once a week to do errands, tutors & deliver farm goods into city.

Thanks again.

I got mine at Whole Foods Market. Safeway and most grocery stores have it now. Just be sure and read the ingredients, should ONLY have almonds. Some brands add sugar and stuff. You could probably use any nut butter, well not peanut but you know :)

Hi Ranchermom, You decribe my experience to the T LOL I am so happy to have gone through it tho, no turning back now, only going on the road to health.

Give this recipe a try, here is a video on how to make it. I posted a picture on my blog, I added some unsweetened coconut to mine.

http://www.rocofit.com/2011/12/08/homema
de-paleo-chocolate/

Homemade Paleo Chocolate

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons organic coconut oil

3 tablespoons almond butter

4 tablespoons pure organic cocopowder

1 tsp vanilla extract

1-2 tablespoons organic or raw honey (this depends on your taste and how sweet you would like it)

Mix all the ingredients together using a double boiler (easy to do!)
Place in a tin or in separate moulds and freeze for 20 minutes

Extra: Almonds, Walnuts, Brazil nuts…whatever you love!

I made this last night for today and had a piece, Oh EMM GEEEEE its good.

Howdy, husband and I have been on the Paleo plan for 25 days now. My husband is the one that got me to try it. We are having different results and how we feel about it. My husband who is diabetic is doing great on it. His feet have stopped being numb he is sleeping well he was used to not eating sugars & carbs on on the other hand I didnt realize how addicted to carbs & sugars I was. By the second day I was crawling out of my skin. By the third day I started detoxing & I thought I was coming down with the flu. Day 25 now I am not craving breads at all but I am still having a hard time with sugars any time I try to sneak one I do get sick! So its a good learning experience hehe. My taste buds have changed. We plan to continue on this path for my whole family its a lot easier for us since we live on a farm we have more food resources to use. I have lost 8 lbs my husband has lost 6 lbs. The hardest part is finding meals and not getting bored with it so I ended up making a small blog to keep track. Thanks! Will look forward to looking around.

Hi my doctor placed me on this diet to help me get rid of the fat in my liver. Said it was the best way to do it. After reading about the diet I am excited to be on it, in fact in the 3 weeks I have been on it I have lost 7 pounds. I am excited that there is a team page.

Hello -- this is Amy and I have had some weird health results over the past year that could point to lupus, stress or whatever ... nothing has been conclusive. But I would like to do what I can to be and feel better health wise and in general. And when I was falsely diagnosed with diabetes, I really loved how I felt without sugar, refined carbs, etc. So this might be the way to go for me.

Hi, my name is Rachel and I am new to the team and the paleo diet. I am a single mom of 3 kids with only 2 left at home. I am excited to start a paleo lifestyle since I already know that foods with too many carbs/sugar make me crash and burn... the shakes, nausea, loss of energy, etc.

I was previously on sparkpeople but had closed my account some time ago. I just rejoined today hoping to find a group for paleos and recipes and so far... I have found both just as I thought I would :)

emoticon I know someone who puts the flaxmeal in applesauce...unsweetened of course! You can also add it to eggs and make a muffin type thing...search SP recipes for Minute Muffin and then just don't use the sweeteners. I also don't put cinnamon, just the proportions of flax, egg, baking powder and oil. I have added veggies or meats, and have baked this as well.

Hello,

I have been a member of spark for a while now, though I am just getting back to using it. I just discovered the paleo diet less than a week ago. I started it the next day after finding out about it and what it was! I am amazed at the energy I have felt. Of the five days I have done it, two of them have included weight training and those days lend me an AMAZING amount of energy right up till time to sleep. One day I did eat an item that had grains/dairy/sugar.. a couple hours before bed and I was nearly unable to stay up! I can't believe the difference and am so thankful for people who have taken the time to publish and share what they have been learning. I would say that I am 95% paleo at this time. I have been using cottage cheese as a way to consume pulverized flax seed. Any suggestions for another way to do it? :)

Sometimes the weight loss takes longer because of internal things going on. I think for some people it can take a more than a month and then they see a weight drop. Its dishearting and they may give up right before the big drop. Hang in there and give it your best shot. Make sure you read some Paleo/primal books and so you can wrap your head around it.

Goals:
If you want real results-they aren't coming for free.

Bless someone each day with my presence. Make them glad they are here.

Teach people how to love.

Hi there,
I'm new to Spark, but was on the paleo diet with one of my daughters for 6 months, about 3 years ago. I felt terrific, lost weight and was never hungry. She was already thin, but gained heaps of energy and general wellness.
I cannot remember why we stopped - but after the past 2 weeks dieting and feeling constantly hungry, I was VERY glad to find this group!

Tonight, rissoles and heaps of BBQ veg for dinner. Yum.

I'm starting paleo right now I guess! I've been doing a lot of reading about it and I'm excited to get started. If anybody else is just starting out feel free to message me or introduce yourself! It'd be great to have a buddy to do this alongside with.

I've got about 20-30 pounds to lose. I've always been big on protein, meats and honestly love vegetables so this sounds right up my alley. I'm not trying to underestimate how easy it's going to be though. I'm pretty athletic (at heart at least) and have been rock climbing 3 days a week with a 30 minute cardio/strength workout each day. Hoping that paleo will compliment that to show some results.

At the moment the biggest thing I'm concerned about is eating essentially a container of meat before climbing and people actually mistaking me for a caveman.

Also- so pleased to see that guacamole is on the paleo list. Probably my favorite food. Anybody found a good alternative to tortilla chips?

You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know. - Rene Daumal

I'm just starting Paleo and am not 100% Paleo, and not sure I'll ever be but I'm at probably 80% or more right now. I have about 70+ pounds to lose and I think that the Paleo way of eating will help me accomplish my weight loss goals, as well as helping me feel better, which in turn will help me get more fit. I'm still learning and reading up on it but have started making changes and am going to take some time this weekend to plan out a meal plan for me next week. I'm glad I found a forum where I can ask questions. Thanks for your support!

Banana chips are super high in sugar and are not such a great choice. Try cutting those out and watching the fruit and nuts and see how you do.

I think it's possible I may be eating too much fruit. I have been eating dried banana chips and a banana each day. Also, nuts and seeds.
