Hi Everyone, I am back on Spark and back on low carb. I did this successfully last year, losing weight and feeling good about myself - but as time went on, I slowly went back to the carbs, thinking I could keep eating them and still be healthy/lose weight.

I am following a combination of Paleo diets, both for the eating plans, as well as the fitness programmes, which make sense to me. I'm really excited to be back. I know this is the right thing to do. My body always feels happier and more energetic. Now it's just a question of keeping with it and not letting myself sabotage myself.

Hi, my name is Nancy and I will be following Whole 30 for a second time as soon as I get to the grocery. I only made it through the 4th day before but I'm convinced this is the right thing to do. I guess I've been eating poorly for my whole life and my body is trying to trick me into continuing that poor way of eating. Since my first attempt in July, I've been buying grass-fed meats and butter and getting as much other organic foods as I can find and afford. I've been an emotional eater my whole life and I think I'm my own worst enemy. I'm retired now and living alone, so hoping I will finally make the time to do what's right for me. I've read through many of the posts here and think this will be a good place to be regularly for help with this journey. I've got at least 5 or 6 Paleo cookbooks and a new one just shipped from amazon.com. The hardest meal for me is breakfast. I love eggs and bacon, but can only eat it so many days in a row. Something about veggies in the morning just repels me. I'm hoping that once my body adapts to the right foods, this won't be as much of an issue for me.

Hi, my name is Lacy and i am familiar with Paleo way of eating as my sister owns a Crossfit Gym (idk if anyone is familiar with crossfit here??) and that is the only way she eats is Paleo. It is deffinitely the most energizing way of eating i have ever found.

I am also currently doing Insanity, if i could make the time to be at The Crossfit near me i would be there, but being a single mom it is very difficult. But i do love insanity and the fact that i can do it in my living room. :-)

I am Jennifer. I've been eating paleo now since September 1. It just occured to me today to look and see if there was a spark team!

I was convinced to try this diet based on someone telling me their husband's asthma got about 80% better on it. I also have other inflammatory issues, allergies, eczema, endometriosis. I have also known I have an unidentified food allergy for many years and this seemed a good way to eliminate the likely candidates all at once.

I'm doing the diet based on a food allergy elimination perspective. I don't know that I completely buy in to the concept that modern humans aren't meant to eat grains. Seems to me primal humans would have eaten everything they could get their hands on. BUT I'm approaching it with an open mind.

As far as the diet goes I have not needed my advair inhaler since labor day. I have not needed an allergy pill, all the while being told by others that their allergies are killing them. I sneeze a few times when I wake in the morning. As far as the "just feeling better" I can't really say energy wise I feel any different.

I just started P90X as well. However because I can't have dairy my sources of lean protien are limited to meat...which quite honesly gets old. So instead of doing the 30%Carb/50%protien/20%fat diet that is recomended...with paleo I've been trying for 30/40/30.

That's me. I joined spark people a few years ago after a couple miscarriages I had a hard time losing weight. It go me to lose weight and I was so happy with it. Once I had my baby, I used it to lose my baby weight and not I'm stuck once more at 10 pounds left to lose to get to where I want to be. What I feel is my "ideal" shape and size.

With everything out there on the internet, I find NO use for paper cookbooks anymore. Even here on SP there are tons of Paleo/Primal reipes and things that can be adapted. All the Paleo blog sites have them too I believe. Another resource is looking up gluten free recipes, there are often ones that fit here too.

I am so jealus about that library! I went to mine yesterday and they have zero Paleo books or cookbooks. I have bought several and they are all wonderful. I love Practical Paleo and Well Fed!

I love to cook, too, Marg, and try new recipes. There are lots of great Paleo cookbooks out there. I'm fortunate to have a library here that has enough money to buy anything that's requested. I always ask for the new Paleo or Primal cookbooks I see talked about anywhere, and they always get them for me. What I found very interesting is that they almost always have a wait list for them! I sort of wish there was some way to find out who is using them and maybe get a group together, but of course that information is confidential. And I certainly wouldn't want them to give out MY info to anyone else!

Hi! My name is Margaret.... aka... Marg

I have been studying and implementing Primal/Leptin and now Paleo strategies into my diet. Funny how one thing leads you down the path to another! Through it all I have given up grains and dairy except Greek yogurt w/protein granola. (Will have to phase my way out of that breakfast.) Am currently reading "The Paleo Solution" by Robb Wolf. I love to cook and experiment with recipes so I know I can get to the Paleo lifestyle.

Hope to gain some insight and tips from you good folks! Looks like a very active team. Love that too!

Hugs..... Marg

Hello! My name is Lesley, just joined SparkPeople yesterday after not using it for 3 years, and I just switched to Paleo about a month ago. I just started the Whole30 program outlined by Melissa and Dallas Hartwig and so far it's going really well! I did do it for 2 weeks in October and felt amazing, but after going to 3 cookouts in a row, I finally caved. But I'm back at it for the next 30 days and hopefully for the rest of my life! I love how I feel and I love knowing what I'm putting into my body!

Hi

I'm finally going Paleo after being diagnosed with Endometriosis and Adenomyosis 2 years ago, living with pain for over a decade, and having a hysterectomy this past May. I will need lots of encouragement and help with this because I love my carbs and cheeses! I'm willing to do this for me though! I'm so glad I found this group.

Hi! I'm from Missouri and just joined. I started Atkins a little over a year ago and discovered I was gluten intolerant. By the time I took the blood test for Celiac there were no antibodies but my doc said my remission of symptoms by not eating gluten was more convincing than the blood work. If I eat gluten, my joints swell like crazy and my guts turn inside out. I suffered for years with constipation/diarhea and horrific bloating and gas. No gluten, no issues with the tummy.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritits and Asthma which are actually almost gone when I eat gluten free. So... the physical ailments are in check when I eat clean.

After being on Atkins I found Mark Sisson and learned about Paleo and was hooked. Mid summer last year my husband had a stroke and I relapsed in my eating. That was rewarded with me developing diverticulitis and then perforating my colon a few months later. I had a colectomy surgery and have a colostomy. I have to lose at least 40 more pounds to hvae the colostomy reversed.

So, eating fiber is a no no for me now (my system won't handle it any more). I am limited in veggies but am doing fine with it. Just lots of protein and as much spinach as I can tolerate plus well cooked low fiber veggies. Hopefully when I get the reversal I'll be able to eat more fiber. The doc said my colon was nothing but diverticuli from the small intestine to the rectum. Not a pretty picture.

We have a goal of moving to the Flagler Beach area to be close to my youngest son in the next few years. Beaches, sun, fun. That's my next goal after getting healthy and fit.

Hi all! I am fairly new to Paleo but am loving it so far! I started my first Whole30 on August 1st so today is my last day! I can't belive how tough the first couple of weeks were and that I stuck with it! I feel amazing! My plan is to keep on the Paleo track and start another whole30 in a few weeks. I had a facebook group that has really helped but I would love to hear other feedback so that is why I am here. Can't wait to dive in! :)

Good luck with the diet..glad ur doing it with a buddy..always stay accountable:)

Yeah I agree on the cravings...every diet i have done I have had cravings...but then again this is a lifestyle change emoticon

Last night I went to bed eating a few nuts as I didnt feel as hungry and I had eaten lunch at 12 and did not have access to food till 8 (paleo food i mean) and I was fine..:) My friends had pie right in front of me but I didnt even feel like eating it:)

The key is variety and eating enough..sometime not eating enough can make u crave for non paleo food too

Hi All,

I'm also new to the Paleo Diet. I have a buddy - we'll be starting our diets on Saturday - the 1st. Although, I've already began making changes.....

Long story short: I had a baby a little over a year ago and my metabolism, activity level, and diet all changed dramatically - as a result I'm about 75lbs heavier than I'm used to. I've been trying for a couple of months now to stop some really unhealthy food choices (all around refined sugars) and I'm hooked. I enrolled a friend of mine to join me as I 'quit'. I'm actually really excited. I've never been this heavy and it's really beginning to be a physical pain. When my friend told me about Paleo it really resonated with me. I really do agree that our culture has changed way to quickly for our DNA to keep up with.

I bought the book today and have been reading away.....
Love everything I'm reading so far - totally makes sense. I'm sincerely hoping that I can incorporate this as a lifestyle change. I want to be vibrantly healthy!!!

I am no expert but from all I have read after a long workout or run is the perfect time for carbs. As far as Paleo goes that is typically sweet potatoes or a more starchy vegetable along with some protein.

CMSLOCUM1, thanks for the welcome! Glad to know I'm not the only one following Paleo/Zone. I do love the way I feel when I eat this way, but I get really bored and do end up craving carbs. So the weekends have been a struggle (especially weekends w/ a long marathon training run of 18-22 miles), but I am going to keep at it. It was good to read that it takes 3 weeks(ish) to get your body truly converted. Perhaps the last month of marathon training isn't the best time for this transition, but I'll keep tryin, lol!

Hi, all! I feel a little bit guilty joining this group as I am following Zone more than Paleo (it's kinder to vegetarians, lol). I tried my 'own version' of Paleo, which allowed for beans, veggie patties and greek yogurt/cottage cheese for protein, then discovered that the Zone diet is pretty much the same deal, just more structured in terms of macronutrient ratios. I enjoy the diet, and I do try to keep it as close to Paleo as I can, aside from the aforementioned foods. :) I hope you all don't mind me joining. I joined the Zone team and it's all crickets in there, no posts in AGES.
Anyway, I am a runner (training for my 2nd marathon on 9/30), spinning instructor (2-3x/week), and I joined CrossFit in May (hence the tie-in to Paleo). So I get plenty of exercise, but I'm still carrying around a lot more fat than I'd like (say about 10 lbs at this point. Too scared to weigh just yet). Hoping to really get away from grains and fuel my body better. Loved the thread about "I think I ruined my relationship to food". It was that discussion that had me wanting to join.
You all seem like a great group! emoticon

Hi! I am from Corvallis. I am a momma to three homeschooled kiddos. I own my business. I am the swim team manager (but like a cat I avoid the water).

Once I was up to 210 and got down to 160 with WW. I steady gained some back despite journalling and maintenance. I had to go back to weight loss to steady out. This is one of the ways I found out my thyroid went wacko. I am trying to get my thyroid stuff worked out.

I recently realized I am my better off without wheat. Just feels better in my belly. Exploring going paleo without being a fanatic about it. This site doesn't support this as an option so I need to take that into consideration when looking at the pie charts and other tracking.

I started here this week at 180. My goal is 160.

Hi! My name is Judy and I am fairly new to Paleo. Been kind of studying it and slowly transitioning this summer. I did the big kitchen clean out before the kids and I went out of town a few weeks ago. I am loving all the new recipes (finding my love off cooking, which was apparently lost) and do not go a day without touching my "Everyday Paleo" book. I have lost 8 pounds since I really started sticking to it. I am already an fairly energetic person so I am just stepping it up.

My biggest obstacle is my boys but that will pass soon enough or get tired of complaining and just eat the goodness I set before them and they can get all the food they love on their weekends with their dad...although he is getting pretty interested in Paleo too!

I am terrible about getting on sparkpeople even though I have been a member for years and unhealthy for years as well. I really want to remember to log in just for this group and I will share recipes as I try them, which is almost one a day and most are hits. The only big question I have is if anyone has ever had any digestive issues when changing diets, exercise...basically anything. It seems my stomach reacts if I change the side of bed I am sleeping on (very sensitive). It takes weeks to recover and isn't fun. Things are leveling out now, I hope, but I was wondering if anyone else had this kind of problem.

Hi,

I'm Roxy and I'm going to try the paleo diet. I have not yet started as I just made the decision today ^_^ I'm going to slowly make the transition by just decreasing dairy and grains for now. My stomach is touchy which is why I'm doing this but I want to take it slow.

I look forward to living a healthier life with all of you ^_^

Roxy

Hi,
I am Natalie, 34 in NC. The hubs and I have been yo-yo-ing since we first started dating 9 years ago. At that time we were both much leaner and fit and had a better handle on our diets. Oh, what love will do..... LOL
Anyway, I weigh almost 180 lbs and I feel and look like crap. I am done feeling so tired and cranky all the time. Hubs is on meds for BP and cholesterol. Needless to say we both need a change. In the past we have tried many things and seem to always end up on South Beach, but cannot stick it out. I suspect dairy and legumes are probably what was hurting us, so we are ready to give Paleo a chance. We just got back from our local farmer's market and I will be headed to Whole Foods later in search of quality meats. I joined this team for recipe inspiration and also support. I am reading Robb Wolf's Paleo Solution right now and find myself heartily agreeing with a lot he has to say. I am just hoping the excitement and momentum get us over the initial hump of missing salt and sugar. Thanks in advance for your support!

Roberta,
Welcome! One of the attractions for me is that I am bad at calorie counting too. I would track and then I would skip a day or so and pretty soon I wasn't tracking. With Paleo I just stick to approved foods. There are many benefits and I hope it helps you!

Best wishes.

I've been here on SP for many years. My commitment issues have just been too inconsistent to make it work. I have managed to quit smoking for over 3 1/2 years now, so the eating impulses that go with that are much milder now, but the weight gained while quitting several times has stayed with me. I go up and down and always back to 204, like it's a set point. What's scary is that it's 90% belly fat. And I have all the health problems that go along with it: diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis, fatty liver... plus lung disease of course. Bottom line, I'm a mess and need to change!

I just finished reading 'Wheat Belly' by Dr. Davidson and much of what he writes sounds so much like me and logical! His emphasis on eliminating gluten and wheat led me to explore other resources and I found much on the paleo diet that I had never even heard of. So to sum it up I'm here to learn more. I do know that I'm no good at calorie counting and menu planning, so I need to find a lifestyle that will just become a new "normal". I'm already off sweets, big on lean meats and won't miss a lot of starchy carbs. Dairy and salt will be the toughest to cut down and fruits and veggies up.

...He lifts me up to more than I can be...

Welcome brokenwhisper! My hubby is really lean too and won't go paleo but that has been one of the good things about this is I can make meat for both of us, rice or potatoes for him, and a veggie or salad and it's perfect. This has been the only way of eating that really works for my cravings. I tried Weight Watchers and just about everything but I had issues with portion control. It was like I would start to eat and couldn't stop. I stay pretty full with Paleo and that keeps me from craving the sweets and carbs.

Best wishes!

Hello everyone.

I have been on SparkPeople for years, yo-yoing with my weight. I am the little teapot... short and stout. Man if you could stretch me out to 5'8, I would be at a healthy weight! hahah I recently lost 25 pounds through Optifast. But since January being off shakes I have gained 5 back. I want to lose 20 more and then maintain. I started researching lifestyles and stumbled across Paleo. I read a few books and it what I read totally made sense!!! Plus I know I am a carb, cheese and sweet addict. So this is my second week adjusting to the lifestyle, and so far so good. My husband is supportive of me, but he will not go Paleo. Plus he is already a lean man. But he does like that I am eating meats and is trying some of the stuff out. I am a bit nervous. I am a teacher and go back to school next week, so I have to plan my meals way ahead of time or else I may fall into bad habits. I have a bunch of books on reserve from the library, hopefully I will be able to find a good cookbook with the dairy free component (some of the books includes dairy and butter, I need to try ghee). I have joined tons of online Paleo communities and been reading a lot. I made Paleo BBQ sauce yesterday and it was so much fun! I will be making mustard and mayo this weekend. I really love food and cooking! I will have to check out the " www.theclothesmakethegirl" website... who knows I might have already done so... there is so much info out there! I am very excited and hope this is the lifestyle that works for me.... I am so tired of looking...

Welcome MutantQueen and Hsflymom! I just ordered Practical Paleo-can't resist a good cookbook and the reviews were great. A wonderful sight for recipes is www.theclothesmakethegirl. Hsflymom, I too struggle with all the conflicting information. What I have learned is that this works for me. Something else might work for others but this is the way I can eat and not be fighting the cravings, etc. and stay healthy.

Best wishes to you both!

New to the idea of Paleo eating, although I have had to deal with carbs for a long time. In the last 6 months I have really come to a crisis about what exactly I am supposed to eat - to the point of weeping because I want something for lunch and I just don't know WHAT to eat. Began looking into the idea of Paleo, and found an article that explained why we should have fat in our diet instead of carbs. It totally clicked and MADE SENSE. Since I was gestational diabetic with 3 of 4 pregnancies, I am at higher risk for developing full blown diabetes now. it was time to eliminate all the breads and sugars.

All that to say I am working at eliminating all grains right now, and keeping starchy veg to sweet potato only, and then only a few times a week. Dairy is limited to a little feta cheese in a salad and a greek yogurt when I am dying for something sweet. My biggest vice is diet coke. I will work on that at some point, but I am wise enough to know that I cannot kick too many habits at one time!

Enough for now. Looking for a place to bounce ideas around and maybe find some good recipes!

"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it."

I've just started experimenting with the Paleo lifestyle. Listening to a lot of podcasts. Reading a lot of blogs. Watching a lot of YouTube videos. Thinking of ordering 'Practical Paleo' by Diane Sanfillipino. Glad to be here.

When You Started Paleo: a couple weeks ago
Why: I use to be paleo but I worked too much to have time to sleep so I stopped. I'm back on because recently had mono and was bed ridden for a long time and now I'm in the worst shape of my life. The Paleo diet worked well when I was on collegiate sports so I'm training again to get back in shape.

It's nice to meet others like me :)

Hey all! I've been Sparking for about a year and a half. I've managed to lose around 25lbs, but have been off the bandwagon for the past couple of months. I have several friends who eat paleo and swear by how great they feel. I can see the results looking at them as well. I typically do better when I have guidelines to follow, so I think the paleo way of eating will help me get back on track and moving on my journey again. Looking forward to connecting, sharing recipes, and learning the ins and outs of paleo!

Welcome Bonbonbig and Ownsmallclothes! I have read others worrying about the fruit and it does seem to derail weight loss. I try to stick to berries. God help me if I get my hands on a bowl of grapes! Pizza is my weakness too-I swear it's the devil!

Ownsmallclothes-sounds like you are starting out well!
