Hello, I'm new to the group and relatively new to paleo. I was told to go paleo by my doctor due to lupus. The day I found out is the very day I started. I am pretty strict paleo... I don't eat grains, dairy, legumes, starchy veggies, no sugar/processed foods. I dropped a lot of weight 3 days after starting. Water weight I'm assuming. Since then I have been losing at a steady 2 lbs per week. I hope I can keep it up!! Either way I'm doing this way of eating forever due to the autoimmune condition and honestly it is not tht hard and I'm proud to be treating my body so well.

HI there, I've dedicated myself to do the Paleo diet with a friend for 50 days. I'm not saying we are falling of the eating path in 50 days. But she is going on a trip to Hawaii and has been off and on the Paleo diet and likes it. I've been struggling with eating, weightloss, and workouts since my friend and I committed to losing weight in 2012. Thus me committing to following her eating plan with her for 50 days to help keep her accountable and get myself on track. I've kindled Robb Wolf book and plan to do a good grocery shop this weekend to help me prepare. I'm out of town this weekend, so Monday is my focus date.

Lorraine you can make them without the cinnamon and sweeteners. They work just fine. I don't add any of that. Also look up Paleo Bread on Spark recipes. It is super tasty! I try not to do the substitute poducts and learn to eat whole foods, but when that craving hits better to have something decent available!

Lorraine,

Not eating as often happens for some of us. Some call it IF(intermittent fasting), which is more prescriptive. I have been following an "eat-when-hungry" protocol for some months now. How it seems to break down for me is that I eat breakfast at about 11 am most days and then dinner at about 6 or 7 pm.

I occasionally eat a raw red pepper or zucchini mid-afternoon, but that my total inputs for the day.

Prior to Paleo I was following conventional wisdom and was eating about 2,500+ calories a day and felt hungry most of the time. I now eat between 1,500 and 1,800 calories a day and just eat when I am hungry. I do eat big meals though - 700 - 1,000 calories at a time, and it works best for me if I keep my calories from fat at about 50% of total calories.

But that is just me - could be different for you.

Hi - I've been struggling with autoimmune disease for years and subsequent weight gain from prednisone and inactivity. Frustrated with traditional medicine, I saw functional medicine doc who quickly determined I'm allergic to yeast. My own research led me to the paleo diet. I am on day 4 - I have lost 3 pounds...and I'm not hungry and I don't feel like crap (although I was warned I might due to the yeast die off) The yeast-free part of my diet doesn't allow vinegar products, so I do miss the condiments and pickles and such, but otherwise I don't feel deprived!

CindyTW,

Thanks for the welcome. I'm trying to figure out a recipe for the muffins that would be more of a bread (not much taste?) taste than the sweet that the original recipe has. I like the original for a sweet treat but as a burger bun, it doesn't work well.

Any ideas?

Egalitaire,

Thanks for the welcome! I guess it's a trial and error thing.

I know that part of my issue is that I probably under-eat. It's not intentional, more of a time/schedule thing. Some days I just don't take the time and only eat once daily, which I know isn't a good idea.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.

Hey Lorraine,

Sounds like you are well on your way to being Paleo and/or are already there. As far as I know, there doesn't seem to be an absolute prescription for what constitutes a Paleo diet. It seems to be more of a framework.

Most of those on this team fall somewhere inside or maybe even outside the framework.

The key for most of us is using the framework as a guide to figure out what works best for us individually. Some eat cheese, others don't, some are good with 120g of carbs a day, others are around 30g. Although most do limit grain-based carbs, some eat legumes, others, not so much.

Also for most, the health benefits transcend weight loss, although the latter is a pretty good fringe benefit.

Here are some authors to check out as a good starting point - most have very informative web sites and/or e-letters - I suggest exhausting those resources before buying books - but that's just me.

Mark Sisson - Mark's Daily Apple
Robb Wolfe
Dr. Jack Kruse
Gary Taubes

Also feel free to ask questions or comment on the team threads and blogs - lots of people on here with experiences and good perspectives.

Happy learning what works best for you.

Newb here and considering paleo. For the most part, I do very low carb and have recently been restricting my potato/rice/bread intake which seems to help weight-wise. I've been fighting the last 5 lbs for longer than I can remember.

I do enjoy flax seed muffins as a bread sub and wonder if these are allowed? (Flax seed meal, baking powder, cinnamon, stevia, egg)

Cutting out the potatoes and rice wasn't as hard as I thought it would be because there are subs available (mashed cauliflower for example). Cutting out dairy altogether could be an issue for me as I do like my coffee creamer (sugar free), cheese and yogurt. Not that I eat a ton of these foods but probably greek yogurt 3-4x week and cheese about the same (we're talking about a serving of string cheese or a slice of cheese).

Thanks that's all very very helpful. I also went to SP recipes and searched on Paleo and got a ton of great recipes from sparkies.. One recipe was I guess a contest winner from the daily apple. A video of this guy making coconut waffles. They looked orgasmic! When I break 200 I will definitely treat myself to trying that!

Hey Arleen,

Welcome to the team. To answer your last question first. Yes, the default settings on the SP nutrition tracker are not Paleo-friendly. You can adjust them manually to fit your nutritional plan.

I second Cindy's suggestion to check out Mark's Daily Apple for a good primer on carb levels, etc. Having said that, there are a number authors that have slightly different takes on the balance of macro-nutrients, what foods are "allowed" and various other lifestyle considerations.

Do some research, ask questions on the message boards and ultimately figure out what works for you. From what I have read on the blogs on this team and others, people are anywhere from 30g - 150g of carbs a day. There doesn't seem to be one prescription that works for everyone. Its all about testing.

As Cindy wrote, we are an experiment of one. We can use the experiences of others as guidance, but the more we can learn to listen to our own bodies, the healthier we can be.

All the best on your journey.

Hi I am new to the Paleo Team. Ive steadly over the past year removed processed sugar and most bread, grain carbs out of my diet with good results (down 25 lbs). I do cardio and strength training 2-4 times a week. I know I need to "up" my intensity because I see my progress slowing. I'm hoping that Paleo can help me move to the next lower weight level and maintain it better. I typically yo-yo 5-8 lbs until I stabilize at a new weight level. I'm currently on a challenge to get under 200, but I know that means really needing to get to about 195 in order to "maintain".

Looking for some good Paleo recipes...yes I know how to grill, roast and saute meats. Does anyone know what the the recommended kind of veggies and daily allowances are -- 20g, 50g, 70g? I'm thinking the SparkTeam Nutrition tracker range for daily carbs is probably too high for a Paleo Diet. Yes/No?

Im sure I'll find great advice and support here on the Paleo Diet team. Glad to be here!

Hi, Welcome to the Paleo/Primal world - you will find almost everyone on here has an individualized nutritional plan - basically we've either figured out or are figuring out what works for our bodies and goals.

You won't get kicked off the team for eating yogourt - of course only if it is full fat, raw milk from grass-fed cows, but really that is the only limitation.

Great resources of people, experience and opinions here - feel free to ask questions or comment, everyone's thoughts and considerations are appreciated.

Hi there,

I've been curious about going paleo after several friends of mine have had success! I'm easing my way into it this week. I still love yogurt, but after 2 days I'm not missing the grains or beans like I thought I would.....nor am I craving sugar.

I'm new to Paleo eating but I've been working towards a lower carb plan for awhile. Paleo sounds more like what I need though. I'm currently about 65 lbs heavier than I need to be so I'm working to lose the weight and regain my health. I'm 55 years old and have RA and inflammation in my joints and along my spine and hips.

Hey! I am new to Paleo and new to the site. My boyfriend stumbled upon the Paleo diet while trying to figure something out to help us. I love it! We have attempted it a few times but life has gotten in the way. We are making a serious effort this time around. The problem is convincing the rest of my family to include more meat and vegetables and less bread. Since I'm relatively new I would like advice please :):)

Hi,
I have been a Spark people member for years and I have had a hard time with consistency. My husband and I are slowly switching to the Paleo lifestyle. I am working on staying consistent and finding a lifestyle that I can stick with. I became interested in the Primal Blueprint way of living and that has led me to the Paleo or Primal diet. I hope to follow the principles of Mark Session (I think that is his last name). I am loving it so far. I just got back for a 4 1/2 mile walk, I did my sprints yesterday, and worked on my four essential moves on Sunday. I am excited to put play back into my life
(volleyball anyone?) and build my strength and functional fitness.

Hi all,
I'm not new to Spark People but I am new to Paleo. My husband and I started last weekend and so far it's been going great. There are many reasons why we started but the the main one is after my gallbladder was removed in 2003 I've been have a hell of a time keeping myself at a healthy weight. I was first told to really focus on grains and try and stay away from fatty cuts of meat. I've lost five pounds in the last week alone and I also don't feel so "sluggish" when I get up in the morning. So far so good. I look forward to learning more through this group.

Hi! I'm new to Paleo. Just started my 30 days strict today April 1! I would like to lose a few pounds of fat, but most of all I have high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and high resting pulse rate that I hope to "fix" with the paleo diet.

Hi, I'm Kat,

I lost 55 lbs in 05 and have put 30 back on. I do best on grain free, so I have been researching paleo and think it might work for me. Always looking for support. I also have carcinoid cancer with adrenal fatigue and thyroid problems. Looking to improve my health all around.

Hi, All! My name is Sharilyn, 24, history of weight problems and PCOS. My mom came across the Paleo diet a couple of weeks ago and I have just completed week 1 of my own Paleo lifestyle change. I dropped 7 pounds in the first week and I am feeling so much better! It have been a little tricky adjusting to eating in restaurants since everything is preseasoned for the most part. I was glad to find a group on SparkPeople since I have been on and off the site for the last couple of years. I look forward to this Paleo journey and can't wait to see how awesome I feel at the end of the 30 day challenge.

Lillith you can handle Cracker Barrel if you choose wisely and ask for special things like holding the butter, focusing on meat and veggie entrees and salads. I have issues with Gluten, dairy and some of the gluten free products. You are not alone!

I travel A LOT for work. After my recent trip, during which, though no fault of my own, I was forced to eat Cracker Barrel food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I could not eat solid food for about a week. My stomach hurt so bad that the only thing I could injest was vegetable juice I would make in my juicer. After that, I tried to eat a bit of dairy, and was in excruciating pain. I looked up food allergies and decided, instead of going to get tested, to go on the diet that excludes most possible allergens. Primal/Paleo was it. I also gave up processed food and most sugars, for good measure. I am in the third week of living la vida Paleo. My stomach doesn't hurt, I dropped about 7lb, and my chronic migranes seem to have done a dissapearing act. I am also not craving anything, and this diet seems to be very sustainable! If my work trips do not derail it, I am hoping to make this a way of life for the rest of my life.

On May 4 of last year I woke up, cleaned out our pantry & fridge & didn't look back. I started at 387 pounds & am down to 314 as of today. I am a pescetarian (was vegetarian for 23 years before this), & I worry that I am not getting the correct balance nutritionally, so I am using Spark to track what I eat in hopes of finding that balance. I am a firm believer in health at every size (http://www.haescommunity.org/) & am not into "diet talk" or body shaming. I believe in good, clean food. Everyone deserves to feel their best, regardless of size.

Hi, I joined Spark People in September 2011 and the only accomplished I made is to increase my max weight by ten pounds. My doctor told me to lower my calories to 1,000 calories a day and don't bother exercising because it doesn't work. I continue walking my dog and lowered my calories, but ended up gaining 6 lbs that week. I don't think this diet is working for me, so I started to google around and found the Paleo Diet. It seems like this would work for me, so I am giving it a try. I don't know that much about it, so I was hoping to find out from you guys.

Hello there! My name is Heidi and I am just starting paleo today. Although I have been cooking paleo for my husband for a year now. I dragged my feet just because I am stubborn and tend to be mean to him about being right. Which I knew he was! So I am excited to be on this journey with him and with all of you. I am a mom of 3 kids, oldest girl 5 middle boy3, and youngest being a girl at 2. That will be my challenge but already found some great recipies that are fantastic :) So here's to this!

Slow and steady....... get's frustrating! :)

Hello everybody I have loosely followed the Paleo diet for the past 4 years due to many reasons and this year, 2012, I have decided to get serious about it. Every time I stick with this diet I feel better, I sleep better and I have more energy.

I lecture on anti-inflammatory diet (very close to Paleo) at community centers where I live and I encourage my patients that have been diagnosed with any type of inflammatory disorder to look to this diet for symptom relief. My goal is to get my masters in Clinical Nutrition starting in 2013 to better help my patients and have a deeper understanding of how diet and biochemistry interact in our bodies.

When I got back on Spark People I was so excited to see that there is a team for Paleo!

Hi I have been living the Paleo lifestyle for about a year now. I was diagnosed with gluten sensitivity last year. A friend of mine gave me two books, Primal Blueprint and The Paleo Solution. I transitioned to Paleo and have never felt better. I am returning to Sparkspeople.com just this month. I am excited to find a Paleo team page! I look forward to learning and sharing with everyone.

New to the team and just starting out on the paleo diet.

I've been eating just gluten free for the past couple months and feel much better. I was doing gluten free in search of balancing out hormonal issues, and through the course, started eating meats and cheeses, eggs, etc that didn't have hormones/antibiotics added and came from range free animals that were vegetarian fed. That led me to the paleo lifestyle. After a lot of research, I'm in for the paleo. Can't wait to notice changes.

~~~Yesterday you said tomorrow.~~~
~I'm not going to sit here and tell you day after day that you can do it. If you don't believe you can do it, then you sure as hell won't achieve it. You have to want this for YOU!!~
Hi, I've been eating low-carb for a while and am now going even lower-carb. I've enjoyed learning about the paleo lifestyle over the last couple of weeks and hope to learn more here.
