Thanks for the welcome guys! I am determined to stick with this, even though I am starting to think I need a therapist to get off of processed foods. I've been experiencing some anxiety/sadness at not being able to eat my normal diet. Physically, I am already feeling a lot more energetic, so that is awesome. Its just the mental/emotional aspect that I have to deal with now. I'm going to try that cauliflower dish! I definitely need to start eating more veggies to fill me up. I'll have a stove again in a month and then I'll be roasting veggies every night. :)

I had RNY gastric bypass, and I choose to never eat ANY grains again. I had a few complications after surgery and just dont want to play lottery with my health in regards to grains. BUT processed foods or others items like sugar substitutes, Crystal light, sauces and potatoes... OH MY, hard to let go. On the whole, I eat a lot of protein, veggies and fruits and am doing well. I do labs in Feb and I see my doc in March. I find the Paleo Way of living mimics a lot of my RNY choices. Considering before surgery I drank LOTS of sodas and ate a bunch of crap, I am doing and looking amazing.

I look forward to great ideas and support here.

emoticon Hi Kim, soda crackers and bakery goods sounds like my old diet! lol (Throw in some cheese and popcorn lol ;) ) I was not a big vegetable eater either but my favorite way to eat most veggies is a tiny bit of salt and pepper and to either saute them in a tiny bit of EVOO or coconut oil or roast them, but without an oven that would be hard. lol Also, one of my favorite new Paleo recipes is to steam cauliflower and then mash it with a little chicken stock and add a tint bit of butter. They'll never be like real mashed potatoes but it's very close and a great comfort food. I am taking this VERY slowly and having a lot of setbacks but I am determined to keep trying to get to 100% Paleo. Good luck to you! emoticon

welcome to the team kim!

Your right - there are many ways to do Paleo. Paleo is a template so you should be able to find your food comfort zone. When I go cold turkey on sugar it takes me @ a week of powering through the cravings and then it gets so much easier. A week is a very short time - so you can do this!

You will probably find that once you give up grains and sugary food your taste buds will change and you will start to taste the natural sweetness in veggies and your occasional fruit. Also - healthy fat sources are now OK so using them in cooking veggies (or on salad dressings) may increase the flavor of them.

Hi! I'm Kim and I am on Day 2 of eating Paleo. I tried it for a couple of weeks before and felt great, but then I fell off the wagon. But now I'm back and going cold turkey. I'm just trying to survive the first week but then I'll probably have lots of questions. I'll definitely need to learn how to make vegetables taste good. I have never eaten many of them, so that's my biggest hurdle in all of this. This week I'm just steaming them or eating them raw. I don't have a stove right now either, so that limits my abilities. But I can still stir fry and steam. I think the most confusing part is figuring out what I want my 'Paleo' to consist of--there seems to be a bit of variance of what foods are allowed. Its pretty crystal clear that my usual diet of soda and crackers and bakery goods is a no go though. :) Which is good.

Anyway, happy to join you all--you seem very knowledgeable and friendly!

~Kim~

Interesting....I'll have to look it up. Definitely easing. lol The best part is though, I really want to keep doing this. With most diets you feel resentful that you have to eat that way to loose weight but with this way of eating I know it's better for me whether or not I loose weight so I am happier trying to do it. :)

welcome Diintrp to the team!

Have you guys tried bulletproof coffee? There are a lot of references to it in the Paleo world. Just Google it to get a recipe.

I'm not a coffee drinker - Chocolates/sugar's my vice.

Some people go full into Paleo, others ease into it. I'm an easer…. Both are viable options on this journey to health - as long as we educate ourselves and become more empowered on our own journey.

same here, I love my coffee! I am not strict Paleo yet either. I still use the Coffemate creamers usually, but I have tried the coconut milk and almond milk and it's just not the same. My thought process is the same, one thing at a time. Once I get better at eating paleo for most of my meals and have lost a significant amount of weight, I will worry about the coffee. :)

I am a fierce coffee drinker lol. Im not strict Paleo yet as I use sugar substitute in my coffee. One thing at a time. The coconut milk is good in the coffee. Having RNY and changing my lifestyle has not been easy, so I am making adjustments when I can, and as I can.

Hi everyone!!!

I am new to the team. I had RNY in March of 2014 and made the decision to not eat grains for many reasons. It was nice stumbling on the Paleo Lifestyle as it really mirrors what I am doing. I am now tweaking things like using coconut oil when I cook and coconut milk in my morning coffee. I have so much more to learn and apply, but I am looking forward to being healthier than I have been in the last two decades.

Hugs!!!!

Welcome TA11Girl1

Paleo isn't a 'diet' - it is a life style. It is also a template for how to eat. There are many different varieties so your 'modified' version might just fit in with one of these versions. I didn't start out 100% and still don't hit that target most days. But the closer I eat to 100% the better I feel.

If you check around this teams various threads you will find a ton of links to read. One of the most common places to start for beginners or for those who are staring out slowly is Mark Sissons site. Here is a link

Hi all. I'm joining this team because right now I'm following what I am calling a "modified Paleo lifestyle". It seems like a good fit for me and my habits, but I don't believe in jumping into anything dramatically different...for me that's a recipe for failure.

So while I slowly acclimate myself to the lifestyle, I want to be involved in a group to learn more about it. And help me stay on the path.

About me - my name is Michelle, I'm 45, and live in Canada. I joined SP about three weeks ago, and have been investigating the Paleo lifestyle for about three months. Also, I hate the word 'diet' :)

Hi Everyone,

I am joining this team as I consider and read about the paleo diet. I did something almost exactly like whole 30 in July/august and have been sugarfree since. I began watching my carbs in October and have felt great following a low carb diet. My diet is continuing to evolve. I find myself eating mostly fish, eggs, meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts and some dairy products.

I am a mom of 4 children still at home, I usually have a noisy, busy house. This week has been an exception since I am at home in bed with the flu (and my laptop).

Welcome to the team Diane.

A Whole 30 is certainly a jump right in there way to start. I've done a couple of them. Both Michelle Tam of Non non Paleo and Melissa Joulwan of The clothes Make the Girl are excellent resources for tasty whole 30 recipes. The Foodee site also has a lot of good choices.

Welcome KDOREE!

A little planning goes a long way. Get your non-Paleo trigger foods out of the house. Develop a list of go to Paleo recipes that can become a foundation of your diet. And most importantly don't expect perfection right out of the starting gate. Remember this is a life style not a weight loss diet. (Although most people's weight adjust to a healthy level so if you are overweight you will probably lose with little effort.) And you can play with your carb levels to tweak what works for you.

There are a lot of resources among the various threads of this team. So take some time to explore. If you have any questions just ask. And if you need support - that's what a team is all about emoticon

You may want to check out Wellness Mama's website. She has 3 or 4 children and does Paleo. She blogs about everything from food, budgets, and making your own personal care product. I'm an empty nester but find a lot of gems on her site.

Hello all! My name is Amy. I've been around on Sparkpeople for a long time. Maybe 7 or 8 years? I'm fairly new to the paleo lifestyle. I completed my first Whole30 in December. Yes, even with the holidays. I was amazed at how much better I felt simply by changing my diet that I don't want to go back to the old way.

Welcome Jewel.

So glad to have to here. Sounds like you are new to Paleo? If so there are a ton of reference links on the various threads on the team pages. So do some exploring to find all the hidden Jewels emoticon Sorry that was a bad joke. Paleo is great because it is not a tool to lose weight - although it works great in that way - it is a life style. So those who lose the weight will keep the weight off as long as they continue living the life style. Most people feel so good after they start eating this way that they can't imagine going back to eating SAD (Standard American Diet).

HELLO, IT'S GOOD TO BE HERE. NO, I'M NOT YELLING. MY KEYBOARD ON MY COMPUTER IS BROKEN SO I'M DOWN TO ONLY BEING ABLE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS. PLEASE FORGIVE ME. THANK YOU SO MUCH :)

TODAY IS DAY 1 WITH STARTING BACK ON A LONG BACKSLIDE. I WAS JUST ABOUT - OR SHALL I SAY PAST MY GOAL WEIGHT BACK THEN BUT DIDN'T REALIZE IT WAS PAST MY GOAL WEIGHT UNTIL AFTER I HAD GAINED IT BACK. I'M BACK TO GET BACK ON TRACK.

A FRIEND AT WORK INSPIRED ME TO GET BACK ON BOARD AFTER SEEING HER TRANSFORMATION PICTURE. SHE HAD LOST 120 LBS WITH 10 LEFT TO GO. SHE SAID THE PALEO DIET WAS THE WAY TO GO.

SO HERE I AM AND READY TO GIVE THIS ANOTHER WHIRL. :)

HELLO TO EVERYONE! :) I LOOK FORWARD TO LEARNING AND MEETING OUR GOALS TOGETHER.

GOD BLESS :) emoticon

Hello everyone! I tried Paleo last year and after the first week, loved it! I have fallen out of it as I have a very hard time keeping up with the no dairy and grains. I really would like to try again and get that energy and just overall great feeling back that I experienced last year. Looking forward to being a part of this team.

Hi, folks!
My name is Sue, I have been on and off Spark many times but hopefully this is my year!
I have had success with the South Beach diet in the past and enjoyed the low carb lifestyle.
I will be interested to see how that compares to the paleo way of eating.
Looking forward to getting to know all of you better.

blessings, Sue

Good morning, I am new to this page and the Paleo diet but not to SP. I have been on and off with SP for about 5 years! I recently saw a Dr. Oz episode that was all about this Paleo diet and what caught my attention was that it can lesson your pain in many areas. I have been over weight for all of my adult life and suffer from acid reflux, a hiatal (sp?) hernia, severe arthritis in my hands and knees and plantar fasciitis in my feet...ALL weight related issues so I was interested in this diet for help with these issues alone, loosing weight would be a bonus! I tried it for five days the week before Christmas and lost 7lbs without exercising! Now, I did not notice any less pain and I was extremely exhausted but it was only 5 days. The great thing was I never felt hungry and I didn't have to restrict my portions so I am going to try this again for the new year and stay on it at least 6 days a week. I am looking forward to trying new recipes and most of all, feeling better. Happy to be part of this group as well. This week I will be cleaning out my kitchen and preparing to start the Paleo way of life next week. :)

Hi! I am returning to SparkPeople, and returning to Paleo as well. These have worked for me in the past, and I have my work cut out for me but I want to be as healthy as I was just a few years ago. I'm in Colorado, and those hiking trails are calling me!

Hi All,
Returning to the cave after 6 months of "reintroducing" grains. Yeah, that didn't go so well.

Sooo, here I am sheepishly returning to the paleo page for support and input from some of the nicest cave dwellers I know. :)

Hope to be of some use, even if I can use my misguided return to grains as a warning.

Have a holly, jolly all those that celebrate!

Peace,
Fran

I've been eating pretty healthy, but I've been really miserable, so, I'm going to go ahead and have the surgery to get my gall bladder taken out. A really pricey holistic dr recomended the paleo diet to help with inflamation. I can't really afford to see him. I heard him on the radio and a caller asked him how to prepare yourself for surgery and he said to build up your gut with probiotics and digestive enzymes. Before my surgery, I want to do the paleo diet. I just can't live this way until the surgery date. What I want to know that I'm confused about is about vegetables. Which ones are okay and which ones aren't? Is there an easy way to know the difference?

I've found recently that my gall bladder is only working at 17%. I'm trying to avoid the surgery and I'm hoping I can get it better. I'm not getting much guidance from my dr, but I can't hardly eat what I normally do. I have to change radically. I hope paleo will help me. I don't know a lot about it though. How is it different from a raw diet? I'm thinking the less man made in my case the better.

Hi, I just joined the group and I just started my paleo diet! I've been easing into it but now I'm full steam ahead. I have a rather severe form of Crohn's disease and I'm hoping to push off having a ileostomy surgery. So my friend who has Crohn's and does Paleo got me started.
Looking forward to learning more.

WOW - that is amazing. Most Drs. are pretty tied in to the Standard American Diet (SAD - you will see that referenced a lot in the different pages on this team). But them my sister's allergist recommended she eat this way so maybe things are changing.

There are a lot of resource with great links on this team. Do some exploring and if you have any questions please ask. Even though the team doesn't always look that active people always step forward to answer question. There are a lot of knowledgable people who hang here.

Kelly - I loved the story about your son.

Hi everyone, I'm 70 and have been stuck at 162 for five years with three pound ups and downs. I have never tried this diet, but I'm interested in stopping the carb cravings so this should do it.

Welcome Kelly.

Funny story about your son. I can so relate. Sometimes children are resistance to their parents changing.

I tend not to use the P word around people who don't eat this way. Some people don't get it and think that it allowed them to give you their unsolicited opinion about how you chose to eat. I usually just say that I eat Ancestrally. It doesn't have the same emotional charge for some people. Instead it just opens up a positive door to how you choose to eat. "If my ancestors wouldn't recognize it as food I don't eat it". Unless I know someone well I don't pontificate on how far back my family tree I am going to find those ancestors emoticon

Ancestral eating seems to be the new phrase to describe Paleo - Primal - PHD - etc. So you really are not being evasive when you use it. It is just a nice umbrella that covers all the little variations to Paleo type of eating plans.

Hi, I'm Kelly. My husband and I have been following a paleo eating plan (I wish there was another term besides "paleo diet". People usually assume that it's a weight lose thing that I'll stop at some point. We need a name like vegetarians and vegans have. Paleoterrians?) I was cleaning our desk off and I found a 2 week menu that Tom had printed off. When I asked about it, he said that he'd been talking to one of our friends about paleo and wanted to try. I asked him how he thought he was going to do that without me (he does cook, but I usually plan the meals). We started the Tuesday after Labor Day. We follow an 80/20 plan which allows for some cheats when we want. But I'm finding that when I have those cheat meals, I don't feel good the next day. We have been cooking all kinds of new things and trying new foods. So far I've lost about 15 pounds and he's lost about 20. I don't really need to lose any more, but the thing is I'm not really trying to lose weight. I just follow the plan and eat right. That's really what's making the difference.
One story and then I'll let you carry on with your day. We have two boys that are away at school (college and grad school). The first time the younger came home he opened the fridge and said,"where's all the food? I Have more food in my fridge at college." It was the end of the week so all the fresh stuff we bought was pretty much gone. Then he went into the pantry and yelled, "Where are all the SNACKS?" Finally, he decided he'd have a bowl of the chili that I had in the crockpot. I told him he could, but it was a new recipe. "WHAT!? You don't change the chili recipe!" After he ate it he said, "it's good, but I hate it cause it's different. Man I go away to school for a month and you guys get all crazy on me!"

Welcome Trainer.

Some people go in completely and some ease into it. It's really a personal thing. I start out 1 and 1/2 years ago with primal.

www.marksdailyapple.com/#axzz2dsdJNt
ue

I've read massive amounts since then - did a couple of whole 30's and a 30 day squeaky clean Paleo challenge. Now I'm doing 30 days Keto to see how my body response to that style of eating. Transitioning gradually has really worked for me and I think I've finally have a solid handle on my sugar addition.

There are a lot of links on the different pages of this team. So do some exploring. I'm guessing since you spend a lot of time in a gym you may know a few Paleo people as well.

If you have any questions, just ask.

Hi everyone! So a little background, although I work and a gym, and I'm married to a personal trainer, I have had a very stressful year and for some reason really picked up on emotional eating. In the past year and half or so, I've gained between 20-25 pounds, despite working out between 5-6 days a week. As they say, you can't out exercise a bad diet, so I really want to get back on the clean eating wagon. I don't think I'm ready for the Whole 30 yet, as I know I'll break it on Thanksgiving, and during holiday parties (mostly alcohol) but I'd at least like to try to eat clean most of the week, and reduce my alcohol intake back to one day a week.

Hey everyone, I'm Melissa, 33 from Ontario Canada.... New to this lifestyle, it's been a little difficult making the transition but I'm confident I can do this. A friend of mine introduced me to this way of life and her success has inspired me. I recently ordered and received a few recipe books and ready to move forward. I have over 100 lbs to lose and I'm ready to make this happen!!

Welcome SINGLEWRITERMOM

Paleo is a great choice for you with what's going on with your body. It is a great anti inflammation diet. 85# is impressive. Good for you for making your health a priority. It is so important for you as a mom but also what you teach your child.

So I'm curious: how did you learn about Paleo and why did you decide to try it. Was it because of your health concerns?

I am a single mom of a 4 year old. I've gone back to school this year so finances are tight but I'm making my health a priority. I've been doing Paleo for just under a year and I've lost a lot of excessive weight (To date about 85 pounds) and it's in my blood now.

I have auto immune issues, when I eat grains I get a lot of inflammation and it irritates my digestive tract. In addition, I am allergic to dairy. So, Paleo's the way to go!

I'm in school for Power Engineering and I'm a happy-go-lucky-person who believes there's nothing I can't do without perseverance and hard work!
