Welcome SENORPARTGAS!

This is a great place to hang for the SP Paleo crew. There are a lot of resources and links on the different threads on this team pages so take some time to explore. Chances are if you have a question you may find an answer. A while back a team member RAMONA did a 30 days Paleo challenge and that is a great place for a beginner to begin. The challenge is over but you can still access all the info RAMONA posted. Start with Day one of the Challenge thread. Go to the very first post.

OR - you can just ask questions of the team. There are a lot of knowledgeable people that hang here.

Hello everyone,

I am new to Sparks and pretty new to Paleo as well. Not really new to LC I followed Atkins for quite a while but strayed off the path. So after a LOT of research Paleo really makes sense for me and my body type.

I know that empty carbs are bad for ME. As much as I love bread, rice and pasta, I just know I cant eat it. I have never been a sugar junky but like that my sugars (in the form of fruit now only) are not restrictive as they are in Atkins. Paleo just makes so much more sense to me.

Anyhow, a little about me:

Male, 50, Canadian, Married 27 years, 3 kids all grown, looking to make some serious lifestyle changes and I am well on my way to that. Goal is to drop at least 70 pounds, get in better shape (ideally running) and live my life healthier.

Welcome MCCRAEE1 - sounds like you have the lifestyle piece down but just need to tweak the eating part. It can add an extra challenge when you are the only one in the family eating this way. No lectures from me on the junk food emoticon from me. It's taken me 1 and 1/2 years of eating this way for me to get myself really Paleo clean. There are a lot of resources on the different pages. Do some exploring and then if you have questions just ask.

Hi, all

I have been more or less primal for the better part of a year. I have lost almost 20 pounds which I attribute to eating more veggies, less carbs and putting on muscle. Note that I am gong to be 50 years old at the end of the month (woman). I really didn't think I could put on muscle but I have. I also do crossfit 3x week, use a standing desk at least 50% of the time, and do some chronic cardio (I do love to put my ipod on and do some elliptical or run on trails around my house on the weekends). I would like 10 more pounds to go away and am going to buckle down and make it happen. I sleep great. I drink my water. I could be better working on my mobility & flexibility - maybe that is a goal for another time.

I eat almost all my dinners at home with my family which is not primal. I am pretty good at eating what they eat and swaping out what doesn't work for me. I also work long hours and pack my breakfast & lunch most days. I'm pretty good on lunches. Breafast I would really rather drive thru. Yeah, I know. that is terrible. I do love me that junk. I think it is honestly the cheese so I'm going to fix and freeze some cheese & egg dishes to get me off the drive thru habit. I can work on making them healthier after I've broken that habit, right?

Keeping enough veggies around the house can also be a challenge. For instance yesterday for lunch I had greens, a whole raw green pepper and a big bag of green beans, some leftover carrot sticks and some chicken breast which I had frozen last week. That wiped me out and now I need to shop again. Today's lunch is greens, a small spot of spaghetti squash & chicken.

Ok, anyway. Love your help.

Welcome KISSAR. It is easy to get off track in social/family situations. Many Paleo people get occasionally derailed, the trick is to shake it off and get back on the plan. There are a lot of links to resources on the different threads so do some exploring. If you have any questions - just ask.

Good luck emoticon

Hi! I have been on the Paleo plan since June and lost 8kgs (19 lbs) in the first few months, but lost focus since then. I've kept most of the weight down, but thought I should go back to the basics to continue on my weight loss journey. Wish me luck :)

Welcome to the team. You've come to the right place. Lots of knowledgeable and supportive people hang out here. I eat really clean Paleo now but I didn't start out that way. Actually there really isn't one right way to do Paleo. So don't worry about daily breaks in your eating. Sometimes it's a process. One of the biggest web sites for this way of eating is Marks Daily Apple (MDA) He talks about 80/20.

Check out all the different threads on this board. You will find a ton of links. There is a challenge going on right now. You can jump in anytime. Check it out each day. Ramona is the challenge master mind and she has searched the web and found amazing links.

Questions are always welcome so when you have them just ask.

I am new to this team. Today is the 1st day of the 3rd week of eating paleo, or trying to eat paleo. I am pretty much doing this on my own and I have questions. Seems like I "break" my diet almost daily due to hidden crap in my food. And it is expensive to stock the pantry. My Sis and I cook a few meals a week from eMeals and we have the paleo plans so this helps.

Eat the food that God gave us, not the "food" that humans created in laboratories

It a good resource and a great place for those new to Paleo/Primal/Ancestral eating to start.

In case you don't know this Paleo - Primal - Ancestral are all in the same family and used interchangeable by the Paleo community. As you read more material it will all come together. But continue to ask questions if you have them.

Hello, I'm very new to Paleo and know next to nothing, but what little I do understand appears to be positive and may help with health issues I have (overweight, diabetes and arthritis). Ramona has kindly given me some references which I'm exploring.

Hello! A friend suggested that I drop by and check out this team. I've been following Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint for the past 3 years, but only half the time. The other half has been spent doing very un-Primal/Paleo stuff. emoticon I've been back following most of the principles for only a week now, so I think joining this team and participating in the challenges will be helpful in keeping me focused.

Reminder to self: Stay in the moment!

Hi!! I'm Shelly and I just rejoined Spark! I had an account a long time ago but didn't utilize it like I should've! I'm an 8th grade teacher and have about 30 pounds to lose. I'm trying not to focus on the scale too much... I just want to feel good and healthy!! I tend to do well for awhile and then once I have a hiccup it goes downhill from there..I love how Spark is community based and I look forward to interacting with all of you, keeping each other on track, and exchanging advice :)

Welcome Nicole!

This team is a good place to come for questions. If you look over the team boards you will see many links to articles that will be useful. You have a lot of food issues and I believe Paleo would work well for you. My sister has similar food issues and she is thriving on Paleo. Her Allergist MD recommended it to her.

There is no one way to do Paleo. If you look at the way indigenous people in our recent past ate they did not have one way to eat either. Some were higher fat others higher carb, etc. Once you take the accident/infection thing out of the equation they all were much healthier than those of us living in the 'modern' world eating our Frankenfoods. That's actually one of the things I like about this Ancestral way of eating - there is no dogma to it. It frees up the 'Am I doing this right?' question. And it allows that we are all different and different things work for different people at different times in their lives.

The main rules to remember starting out are: Cut out all grains. Oat is a grain. Some people allow rice but if your goal is to lose weight you might want to make that one off limits for a while.

Cut out all processed food. If your Great, Great, Great…… Grandparents wouldn't recognize it as a food keep it off limits.

If you want to lose weight focus on vegetable matter that grows above ground. Sweet potatoes grow IN the ground. They are nutrient dense so they might be a good addition during pregnancy. Different time in your life - different body requirements - adjust plan.

Stick to healthy fats - saturated fats from 100% pastured animals, coconut oil, olive oil, etc. (Butter is probably on your not allowed Dairy list). Stay away from seed oils. They are rancid before you get them home.

Keep in mind Paleo isn't a 'diet' to lose weight - it is a life style.

Alya

Hey group, my name is Nicole. I live in NC where sweet tea, hushpuppies, BBQ (pork) and creamy yummy desserts are known for. I grew up in NYC but moved here after 9/11 and slowly put on the weight until I am now in my 200's which is my highest weight ever. My hubby and now are renewing our vows and am planning on having a baby hopefully next year. I am trying to get into that mind set of eating as if I am pregnant. I have a ton of food allergies including to wheat, soy, dairy, eggs, peanuts and fish/shellfish. I figured the Paleo diet would be best for me. I have so many questions. I was reading and in one book a person should stay away from oats and sweet potatoes but in another its ok. I know moderation is the key but just I give it up completely?

There are others here who can give you a better description but in a nutshell: Paleo and Primal are very similar. Primal is Mark Sisson's baby. It allows some foods like dairy that Paleo does not. Sisson says to aims for 80/20 compliance. That's why it's is an easier transition into this way of eating than Paleo and probably more sustainable for most over the long haul. The Whole 30 is a 30 day challenge program that I think of as clean Paleo. It can be used like an elimination diet to find out if any foods bother your body, to clean up your eating, to get back on track, etc. What I have notices among the many blogs out there is that the trend is to use the word 'Ancestral' eating which kind of encompasses it all.

Thank you Ayla! I did see all the different blogs suggested here in the team and have already signed up for newsletters.
I don't understand though the difference between the Primal and the whole30 vs Paleo?

Welcome Sam.

I see that you have been exploring the different team topics and have probably already found some good links to references. Marks Daily Apple is probably one of the most popular web sites for Primal. His program may be a little easier for someone who is new to Paleo to start on. www.marksdailyapple.com/#axzz2dsdJNt

If you want to totally jump you can go with the whole 30 whole30.com

Chris Kresser is well thought of chriskresser.com

as is Robb Wolf robbwolf.com

There are a ton a great recipe sites out there.

Hi everyone. I am new to the team and to Paleo. After doing a lot of reading on IBS, Candida, Leaky gut and SIBO I did some reading on Paleo and it seemed to provide answers regarding lowering inflammation and imbalances in the system.
I am concerned it won't be easy to stick with and I am not sure where to start either. Any help and suggestions will be appreciated!
:)

Hello! I'm Sheila, a 40-something wife and mother living in SW Virginia. Years ago I worked in public health, before embarking on the homeschooling adventure with my children (one now in college and one to go).
I've always been the nurturing type, but for some insane reason, I've always put taking care of myself on the back burner. I've also been a yo-yo dieter. Lose, gain, guilt, lose, gain, guilt...
I am just now realizing that something about my thinking needs to change. Thoughts about my relationship with food, my self image, my goals, etc.
It hasn't been as simple as burn more calories than I take in. I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and I am sure since I am in my forties, hormone issues are coming more into play as well.
I need to find what works for me, and be OK with that. I know personally that I have to eat on the lower end of the carb spectrum, and I tend to lean toward the Paleo way of eating because it focuses on whole foods, and I typically feel my best.

Hi, Greg!
I'm in Oregon, too...but a bit farther south in Albany (work in Salem).
I love Paleo and when I really stick with it, I lose weight effortlessly. I don't think I ever quite took full advantage of it, though, and often enjoyed the weight loss without exercising...which isn't a sustainable way to lose weight.
The hardest part of Paleo for me is/was 100% giving up foods I love - like pasta and ice cream. I can't even do gluten-free as a splurge (i.e. gluten free pasta). Last time I did that I'd lost 10 pounds so far and then started with those little "cheats" that eventually just led to big cheats and those 10 pounds came back.
Now I am on a Paleo/Primal plan - so I do still allow myself some dairy, but not a lot.
You will absolutely lose weight with this lifestyle!
I like to use www.nomnompaleo.com for recipes!

I'm Greg and I live in a suburb of Portland, OR. I am a week into paleo and doing alright. I think cutting out grains and dairy has really killed off any possible IBS. A friend of mine went from 430 to about 200 in a year and a half, now he's down to 160 and just ran another marathon. WTF?! His secret: paleo. He didn't even exercise until he was 260 because he could hardly move due to joint pain. My mileage may vary. I expect that. But I am dedicated. This is a good fight. Afghanistan (for me) wasn't.

I was 370 pounds about 2 weeks ago, and that was it. Juicing worked earlier in the year, but I felt terrible. And it isn't sustainable. Now I am at my absolute worst point (that I know of). Joint pain galore. I blame some PTSD and some rough years afterwards for astronomical chronic stress and exponential weight gain that followed. But that didn't put food in my mouth. I am finally back on track mentally and taking control of what I am able. No easy day. I think my metabolism has been wrecked for some time. I am surprised not to be a Type II.

Years ago I went from 280 down to about 200 in less than a year on the Scarsdale diet. That and exercise. But it wasn't sustainable. Probably killed my metabolism. Now its 10 years later. And though I like grapefruit, it wrecks almost every medicine you take--and now I actually know that :(

I am working at 60-20-20 and find that is more manageable a ratio for me. I didn't gain all of it in a year so I don't think it will just fall off (that would be nice).

My name is Liz and I live in a suburb of Kansas City. I have been paleo before. Then, I started researching diet and considered going plant based. I find it easy to get conflicted from all the research but I have finally decided that going Paleo with high quality meats, no grains, high non-starchy vegetables and limited fruits is right for me. I am going to try and avoid creating foods that mimic unhealthy foods...eg using nut flours to bake and just try and eat right at least 80 percent of the time. I am going to try and have more healthy fish in my diet and eat grain fed when possible. Hello group!

Hi. I'm Kathy. I have been collecting Paleo information and recipes for over a year now and changing little things as I go along. In October 2012, I joined a crossfit boot camp. It was the 2nd time I had done crossfit and I Love it. I lost about 20 lbs and 15 inches in 6 weeks. It was great and I kept doing crossfit for another 6 months without the Paleo diet. I tore my achilles; went through therapy; went back to crossfit; suffered from serious knee pain, etc etc. I am tired of having pain all over and really want to get back into crossfit. So I am getting serious about my Paleo. Glad to have found a group of people with similar goals and a love for Paleo!

Kathy

Hi. I'm Shauny. I started the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol diet a few days ago. I'm 41 years old and have Mixed Connective Tissue Disease with Lupus and RA as my leading conditions, followed closely by: Sjogren's, Raynaud's, and Fibro. I became permanently disabled from these conditions at the age of 39 and am now bed-ridden. Prednisone has pushed my 5'9 165 athletic frame to 230. I lost 30 pounds from the nausea that comes with autoimmune diseases, but I'm on my own to lose the rest. The main reason I want to lose weight is for medical reasons. I want my hubby and sons to be able to lift my body when I faint, which I do a lot. It's humiliating to watch them work together. My self-esteem was hit really hard with this illness. I used to work and was a productive member of society. I know I can't go back to that, but to even feel like I'm more than a big lump on the bed would be amazing. I know this will happen for me. I want to shed this unhealthy weight and be able to do yoga again. Is there anyone else doing the autoimmune protocol diet? I'd love to buddy up.

Hello Paleo Pals! my name is JoVonn, I'm a married mother of 6 kids (all grown & gone). Hubby & I live in New York City and enjoy dining out, going on vacations, mainly cruises and just having fun! I've tried just about every diet known to man and am just so sick of it all! The most successful diet I've been on with fast (though not lasting) results was based on low Carb. I've done South Beach, Atkins and the Dukan Diet. Only thing is when I start to re-introduce carbs into my diet I gain all the weight back plus some. I'm now at an all time highest weight ever (over 200 lbs) and am experiencing body aches & pains I've never had before. I know that if I drop at least 50 to 60 lbs I'll feel so much better not to mention look better too! I don't want to end up like my mother & grandmother with diabetes, and at age 53, I know that if I don't do something soon my health is going to give out on me. Please help me to learn what I need to do on the Paleo plan and I look forward to making this my new lifestyle change.

May Gods blessings be upon you and your families.

The only thing standing in the way of my success is ME! So I choose to move out the way and claim my Victory!

Jovonn

Hi! I am new to this Team, and new to Paleo. My name is Jen, I am from just North of Boston. I love all things Disney. I'm 42 and engaged. And I have a dog named Beauty.
I've tried so many ''diets'' and never can find the right one. So I've been reading up on Paleo and I like the principals of it. And I realized I was practically following Paleo w/out knowing I was, lol.
Looking forward to chatting you all!

I want to run all the races!

Hello there. I'm Isabelle, about to reach 30 and very new to Paleo. Actually, haven't started yet =) I'm on a 21 Days Sugar Detox at the moment, I started the Detox to cut sugar cravings but also to see if I could do it and cut dairy, bred, grain, legumes, etc to my diet. It's feasable and I think I'll enjoy it. I've already found I can eat bacon in the morning now lol =)
My friends do not agree about this lifechange but I'm going to show them that it's possible to eat Paleo and still, get enough energy to sustain my high level of exercising.
I'm open to any tips/advices/words you may have to say =)

You are SO worth all the efforts you put in your journey! Don't give up, it's never a failure, just a step back. Going forward is the key because nobody is perfect and set backs will happen. Be proud!

Hello team, I am new to the Paleo diet and haven't actually started yet. My husband and I recently started crossfit and some people have talked to us about increasing our protein intake and changing some eating habits.

The possibilities always outnumber the problems.

If you go to Mark Sisson's website, it has all the info!
www.marksdailyapple.com
And you can type in the search bar 21-day challenge.

It's just this Author's challenge for you to go fully Primal for 21 Days. His site gives you all the info you will need. 21 days full Paleo, 100%.

His book, The Primal Blueprint, is a very good read as well!

Wow! It's great to hear that a Doctor suggested eating the Paleo way. More doctors should be suggesting this to their patients.

It's so inspiring to hear everyone doing well! Keep up the good work. Today is my Day 2 of my 21-Day Challenge!
It hasn't been too difficult for me eating this way. I haven't eaten wheat since middle of May. So the getting rid of wheat has been simple. But sugar...I love sugar. Working hard to keep on track. Got to get more exercise into my daily life. I am very lazy.

I started eating paleo on May 12 of this year. My body is loving it!!! My blood sugar is now under control and my joints are not hurting for the first time in years. I have lost 22 pounds and feel great. So I don't beat myself up when I mess up my goal is to eat 100% paleo 90% of the time. I live in New Orleans and with the foods we have here I think 90% is the best I can do. But it works for me, for now. This way it is a lifetime plan -- not a diet.

I have been on the Paleo diet since April 1st and have lost 36 pounds so far. I've been keeping pretty much in line with what's recommended and have found the foods on the list to be right up my alley. I plan on continuing to stay on the diet and see what weight I eventually level off. I've been walking and biking to enhance my cardio. Feeling better then I've felt for a long time. Not your typical 60 year old anymore. My wife is also on the diet and has lost 8 pounds. I'm down almost 3 pants sizes. I hesitate to use the word diet as I'm never hungry. 6/8/14 Made the 40 pounds lost mark. Great motivation to continue.

Wow, Kelly, you and I have a lot in common. I've been on SP for years and years but I tend to come on for months at a time and then leave for the same amount of time. I'm turning 40 in December and I'm determined to have taken a big chunk out of what I need to lose by then.

Your addiction to candy could be hypothyroidism. I had a huge addiction to candy that I felt absolutely powerless to stop. It wasn't until I fought to get my diagnosis and started the first dosage that I even knew that sugar addiction is a huge symptom of hypothyroidism. Even though that dosage wasn't right for me, my sugar cravings were GONE by the end of the first week. I would take a can of Pepsi out of the fridge out of habit and 2 days later it's still unopened on my desk because I forgot about it. My daughter bought me my fave candy when she went out with her friends, and it sat in my lunch box for a full week because I just didn't feel like it.

I didn't do great on the weekend. I missed a lot of meals and then when I did it it was NOT Paleo lol. Back on track today. Giving up dairy is the hardest for me. I like my organic greek yogurt in my morning smoothie because it helps me feel fuller longer. Lunches and dinners are fine, it's my breakfast that I'm struggling.

Hey everyone!

I am new to the Paleo lifestyle. Just starting it today. I have been here at SP for a long time going off and on for long amounts at a time. But I am back and ready to get this healthy lifestyle back on track! I have a new job in Uptown Charlotte, NC and I got my parking a half a mile away so I could walk everyday. If I don't do anything else I must walk to get to my truck! I will be 40 in December and have resolved to NOT go into my 40's feeling this way. Just from researching and reading on the Paleo diet I think it will be the best fit for me as gluten's have been giving me problems since I had my gall bladder out 2 years ago. And I have an addiction to candy! So, hoping this will help eliminate those issues. I also have older teens who are graduating high school and doing college and sprouting their wings over the next couple of years. I want to be healthy and rocking a new body for the empty nest with my husband!

Looking most forward to taking my husbands breath away!

I've been eating Paleo since the last week of April, so almost one month. I've lost 16 pounds. I started walking about 3 miles every morning. I'm doing the plank challenge too. Tomorrow will start doing sprints while I walk. I've been doing reps of jump rope, but I seem to be rope challenged, so interval sprints will work better, I think.

I'm going to start the underground wellness fitness next week. Want to get a little farther in my planks before I start.

Paleo has really worked well for me. Brain fog, is much, much better. I need to work on stress relief, as I'm not sleeping as well as I would like to.

Glad to have found this group.

I started eating paleo/primal in March of this year and have so far lost 17lbs. I'm not 100%, but have noticed that when I do eat things "off the list" I don't feel the greatest so it helps keep me on track. My cheat days/meals are getting farther apart and aren't as all out as they used to be either...mostly cause I don't like the feeling I get when I eat too many carbs.

I'm excited about how far I've come already and look forward to taking this all the way. Trying to slowly convert my carb adoring family but so far not too many recipes have been a big hit...lol

Do not ask "is this good or bad...is this right or wrong for me?"...but instead ask "for where I want to be in the future, is this the WISE choice for me?"

"I have the right to do anything." you say - but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything" - but not everything is constructive. I Corinthians 10:23

I'm beginning my offical Paleo journey today. Last night I shopped for plant based meals this week. Dairy will be the hardest for me. I have hypothyroidism and that my medication for that pretty much took care of my sugar cravings but when I'm hungry I tend to grab a couple of ounces of cheese to help fill me up. I'm not planning on 100% Paleo at this time, but rather strictly limiting meats and dairy and about 95% of wheat from my diet. I'm focusing on 50% of each meal being plant based, with the vast majority of that coming from green veggies.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone and gaining some inspiration as well as hopefully providing some.

And, just to add, the best website to read about living Primal (Paleo) is this:

Mark Sisson is amazing and is very good at explaining things and backing up everything he talks about. His book, The Primal Blueprint, is also a very good read!! :)

Hi!
I'm Daniela and I kinda started the Paleo way of eating at the beginning of May. But I've slipped up a few times. Especially since Guttate Psoriasis has popped up at the start of the month as well. It's been brutal. It covers my scalp, face and entire body. It really sucks. Anyway, eating without wheat and dairy and sugar isn't very hard. Especially when you can plan and have the funds to afford all that good stuff. It's definitely going to take me some time because I have to get in the habit of meal prepping and planning.
After my visit with my mom this weekend, it shouldn't be a problem to get back on track. Eating Paleo definitely helps me feel better and it reduces the bloating in my belly. I know by the end of the summer I will be at a weight I am comfortable with.
I will be more energized and be more active. I know all this can happen. The only thing I know I need to stop 100%...is smoking weed.
That's my only downfall in it all cuz it causes me to munch out like crazy! But it will be done! I will be smoke-free, wheat-free, dairy-free and sugar free!!!!! Go ME!!!!
I'm a good motivator and would love to have someone to go back and forth with for motivation and support!!!

There are plenty of FREE books at amazon that you can read on your compputer, phone or a kindle - and there are several blogs - if you read thru the forum topics - that is where I found some other get links and great info.

Just one step at a time. Basically to me it's eating full fat products,

no pasta, no bread, rice, no handy dandy prepared foods or mixes. No low fat, low sugar products ~ basically avoid anything that has more than 10 ingredients because they are probably chemicals, etc.

Use butter, olive oil, coconut oil, red palm oil, bacon grease to cook with. I use Sweetleaf brand Stevia for my sugar

My doctor has been recommending for awhile that I try paleo, but I've been hesitant to throw one more change into many recent changes. Got to start someone, maybe doing one day a week for starters and grow into it from there? Any advice for a newbie?

Hi. To begin, I'm a happily married woman with 4 amazing kids and 1 awesome grand daughter. I'm 41 years old. I used to kickbox and do yoga/pilates at least 4-5 times per week. I enjoyed my athletic, curvy body and the feeling I got from being in shape. In 2009 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. In 2012 I became disabled and was no longer able to work so I retired from the medical field. Shortly after, I was diagnosed with Lupus, Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, Sjogren's Syndrome and Rhaynaud's Phenomenon, and am photosensitive (I cannot tolerate sun/heat). My weight has skyrocketed due to lack of activity and the meds which accompany the fight against autoimmune disease.

I'm now trying the Paleo diet as a lifestyle change aimed at reducing the inflammation in my body. Hopefully this will help me to manage my symptoms.

I spend quite a bit of time reading, and binge watching shows on Netflix with my aforementioned husband. I'm also in the process of writing my first romance novel.

Is there anyone else here with an autoimmune disease who is having success with Paleo in managing their illness? I'd love to hear from you.

Hi. I am BRAND new to Paleo but not to Sparkpeople. Have been on here about a year. Lost 60 pounds last year but have managed to put back on about 20 and not having an easy time getting back into the swing of things. I struggle with carb cravings and a lot of belly fat. From everything I've read, I'm sensitive to wheat so it's time to ditch it along with refined sugars and chemicals in all the crap on the grocery store shelves today. My fear is of getting bored with the menu options and being caught short at time to prepare healthy food options appropriate to this way of eating. Hoping to benefit from others' success and experiences.

Hi! I'm new to SparkPeople but have been doing a modified Paleo/Primal diet for a month now. In reality, I've been doing it, more off than on, for over a year. I've been able to walk away from grains, other than rice once in a while. Sugar continues to be an issue with me. I have 60 pounds to lose and I'd like to get healthy while I'm losing it, that's why I chose to commit to this plan. I've been gaining and losing weight since my oldest, who is 16, was born. I want food and weight to no longer be an issue with me. I want to eat for fuel and health, rather than for entertainment and reward. I also need a place to check in on a daily basis; a place where I feel accountable, so I hope to see you in other parts of the paleo community boards.

Hi everyone! My husband and I are new to the Paleo lifestyle. I started last Saturday and have already lost almost five pounds.

I had a co-worker question my acv regimen and as I was explaining the health benefits to her, we had a dialogue about our diets and how I hope it helps my cholesterol and gi systems and bloating along with some hopeful weight loss. She disclosed to me that she lost 25 lbs on the Paleo diet. I was curious so she let me borrow her book "Practical Paleo " I read the entire book in two days. I started cooking again, as my husband does most of the cooking and included my husband in our weekend shopping. He still eats bread but I haven't since Saturday, but he is on board, I think if I work on new recipes, he would try new things.

I definitely think this is do able for our family with one steady income, my husband works in construction and we have bad winters which decreased income during winter months. I sat down and factored what I'm was spending weekly on take out, dining out, fast food, 3-4 large coffees from DD with extra sugar almost daily, and our old shopping ways. It actually came to be with less money and I had slot more in my fridge. I have limited my coffee with 1 stevia in the raw to 2 a day and switched to 2 decaffeinated herbal teas with 2 tsps of acv 1/2 tsp of raw honey.

I have been looking at websites and emails to learn about substitutes for occasional baking after my full 30 days. And plan on making my own granola this weekend, for use with work lunches. I made a delicious flank steak stew with a variety of veggies and stepped out if my comfort zone, and went to butcher and learned how to make a superfood ( bone marrow broth) my stew was so good!!!! My dog Bella loved the bone. My husband loved the stew !! I saved the rest of the broth get me through the intermittent fatigue I have been feeling past 2 days as I read that it can help as the body is cleaning out all the bad carbs, processed and refined sugars. I weighted my self yesterday morning out of curiosity and have already lost some weight. My stomach is less bloated after meals and I do have the usually gi upset.

Now I have been using acv for a month and not sure if that's helping as well but I plan in doing acv for the rest if my life. It has helped my horrible gi discomfort and curbing my appetite. I like it in the herbal tea, before I was drinking it in V8 splash or warm h20.

I have been getting intermittent headaches mostly after 3 pm I believe is related to decreased caffeine so I had some yogurt and berries and felt better. I still choice to eat dairy sometimes but I thought I was lactose intolerant and was going to give it up , and I haven't had any reaction to yogurt so far, the only dairy I'm using currently.

I am still exploring but I don't really have any complaints, I feel satisfied, and I don't feel deprived. I have also recently noticed my throat feels more congested with thick secretions. Not sure if this is related. But I don't feel unwell. The acv can help with that too from my understanding.

I of have some new recipes to try and getting back into the kitchen will be a fun experience. As anyone offered that need slide

Thanks for the response! I agree, cutting out convenience food will be what balances me as well. Also not eating out will hopefully make me see a return in my huge food investment! I probably need to limit new recipes to one per week! :D

Hi Amy_Lahaie!

Welcome to the team. One of my daughters was vegetarian for about 4 years and I thought her food was expensive in comparison to what I am buying for myself now.

I try to buy most of my meat on sale or better yet marked down. I separate the big packages in to smaller portions and freeze them. I buy eggs, bacon, chicken, seafood, pork etc.. Even though organic is the best - I can't afford it. But I am eating healthier, not wasting money on diet sodas, donuts or chips and other foods which make me fat, LOL.. I get Hormel Pepperoni slices at Dollar Tree and I can make pepperoni chips or just cover it with cheese for a quick lunch/snack.

Hey! I'm new to the team, but on not on sp much. :( I'm pretty new to paleo. So here's the deal. I was a vegetarian for eight years. My husband gave me a bite of his steak a few weeks ago, and I was like mmmmm. So then we decided that I should try paleo because I've been diagnosed with IBS, and my blood sugar is borderline insane. A couple of things:

~I am a super picky eater, so I only like steak, eggs, bacon (duh), and pork chops. I still love my veggies.
~why not oatmeal? Ugh I miss it so much!
~My energy is incredible without grains, I guess that answers question two.
~Paleo is super expensive, when you consider the fact that in a week my household has gone through four cartons of organic eggs, and like a zillion lbs of breakfast meat and fresh veggies.
~I guess expense is okay. I lost 3lbs.

I'm a college student (I'm supposed to be writing a critical evaluation essay, but I'm daydreaming about my pork chops, and spark seemed so much more enticing than evaluating an essay from 1979.)

I'm a military wife, and my husband is back on deployment. Trying to lose 35lbs before he gets home, or at least drop from a sz 10 pants size to an 8, or even 6.

I'm sort of rad!

Hi I'm Teri. I've been on Spark for a few years. It's been an up and down battle. I finally found that Paleo works for me. I have a paleo journal on Mark's Daily Apple but I was curious if Spark had Paleo people so I found this team. I'm a diabetic and over 50 so I have challenges. I have played around with Paleo for over a year. I think I have been going through the stages of change because this time I feel that I could really live this lifestyle. It has been pretty easy with no cravings. I'm pretty sure I'm fat adapted now. I have ultimate goal to lose 56 pounds but my first goal is 169, which is a BMI that is overweight and I will not be obese any more.

Hi I am Heather. I am a longtime SP member but a recent participant in the Paleo lifestyle. I started Monday and already feel my mood changing for the better. I haven't been hungry or anything yet. I have experimented over the years with Atkins and had some success, so Paleo is not too much different for me.

Good Luck to you all!! emoticon

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the group and Paleo but not to SP. I haven't been using SP for over a year and recently came back as I'm motivated to try to lose the weight I have put on over the last several years. I am calling it my "6 months to 40" push towards better health! I have been reading up on Paleo and it's a style of eating that is interesting to me, although I definitely miss the ease of breads and pastas for lunch & dinners. I started eating Paleo 80/20 on Monday this past week and it's gone very well all week but here we are on the long holiday weekend! I just hope i make the best choices. Feeling great and my digestive issues have already improved!

Looks like we joined a day apart! I got my info on Paleo from the FIRST magazine- April issue of this year. Then I started looking for more info online. Looks like there are bits of different ways to follow it. I found that Amazon has a bunch of free Paleo stuff for Kindle (if you have one)- mostly recipes, but also some information about Paleo.

Hi.
I thought my last post would have stuck here, but apparently not. I've been having computer issues.

I have been pretty much gluten free for a year. 2 sodas per week. I thought that was awful food wise, but good for inflammation. Then about a month ago, I went to a naturopath who suggested I wasn't doing enough. I was introduced to Paleo. I thought I was adapting and BOOM, she thought I didn't have a clear enough picture of paleo. I went to a library/author series and listened to Terry Whals. Apparently I had been very limited in my dietary choices. She helped me see differently and I'm still reading the book. My hope is that the people on this team can help me change over to the paleo lifestyle.

Hi, I'm Melanie from Texas. I am new to the group but not to SP. I am looking into the Paleo lifestyle because I have Hashimoto's Disease and Endometriosis. Plus I am allergic to wheat and soy so need to be more aware of what I am eating. This has been so hard for me to go gluten free. I didn't think it would be but it has. I am Italian and I love my breads and Pastas but my life is worth more than the taste fo food. I have recently began growing my own garden and have fresh meat and that's what I plan to eat. I just need some guidance as to how to go abouts doing this and sticking with it. Any help is greatly appreciated and I look forward to this new journey with each of you.

Hello!! I have been slowly moving towards a full paleo lifestyle for a about a year. Actually, I am probably more primal as I do eat dairy, otherwise my only fault is that I eat peanut butter and this probably equivalent to more than the allowed 20% on paleo. No body is taking away my peanut butter!! Ha Ha! Anyway, I have been with Spark for many many years and I love it! Looking forward to being part of this team!

Hello,

I've been part of this group for a while but I don't think I've ever made a single post in here before! My name is Sarah, and I've been 80/20 paleo since June of 2013. I've had a wonderful time on this diet, losing 40 lbs on it so far! I hit a plateau that I decided to work through and so right now I'm on day five of the whole30.

I'm looking for sparkbuddies to help motivate and help keep me motivated, so feel free to add me as a friend or send me a message!

Hello! I'm Myah.
I have been grain free and low carb for about 5 months now but just gave up dairy a week or so ago so only now count myself as Paleo, lol.
I am sugar and legume free too. The only thing I can't really do right now is 100% free range/grass fed meat. I get it here and there but can't afford it all the time.

I have been reading posts and so far I have found this group to be really informative!

Hey, everyone!

I'm on day 6 of Paleo, I think. So far, so good. I'm mainly doing it because honestly, unless I go low-carb, I don't lose weight and for health reasons.

Good luck to all of us!

Hello All today is my first day on Paleo, and opps I have got it wrong already. I thought a nice cesear salad was an easy option for lunch.

But argh it came already with dressing, cheese (only a little bit and crootons so ops the only paleo part was the lettuce and bacon.

As I settle in I will start making lunches at home so that I don't hit these little problems or think to say hold the dressing ! I forget these thing often just get added !

I'm basicially here to loose weight and get more active so here goes !

Hi there! I'm Leslie and I've been Paleo for almost 2 years now (started Memorial Day 2012). I was really good about it and stayed on track for the first year...but the last 9 months or so I've been off and on, off and on. I eat Paleo for health reasons - turns out my body gets really mad at me when I eat gluten, dairy, soy and other legumes...and recently found out I'm allergic to eggs (SO SAD, but have gotten used to that over the past 2 months). So after some recent weight gain and a mini freak out (or maybe it was a major freak out) about my weight and fat% going up up UP, I am back on the Paleo bandwagon, and have decided to track calories until I get to my goal weight/fat%. I may not be super-active on the boards, but glad to be here anyway.

Hello, Rue here, I'm new to the group, but have been eating Paleo for a while now. I hope to see some significant changes after starting the 30 day challenge.

Hey there! I am new to the team. I just finished a Whole30 challenge yesterday. My plan is to continue to eat the Paleo way to see if this will help get rid of the daily headaches I have had for over 8 years. Many tests have been run, all coming back negative and I have tried many meds that don't work. I'm willing to give anything a shot at this point. I'm also wanting to get healthier and eat better so hopefully the Paleo diet will help me achieve those goals. I am loving the extra energy and other results so far after the 30 days. Now I just need to stick to it.

I have decided that tomorrow I am beginning the Whole 30. I tried Paleo at the beginning of January and had dropped like 6 pounds in a week but then went on vacation and gained it all back. Now I am ready to make it a lifestyle. I am commited to the 30 days!
