My daughter at 10 is pretty much going through the same thing. Although she's from Russia she was a foundling so we also have no information for her which she has a hard time dealing with. Much of what you said sounds like underlying anxiety / fear. Have you attended any of the Heather Forbes seminars or read her books or the Connected Child by Karyn Purvis? We've had to modify our parenting dramatically and it has helped ... far from perfect as this weekend will attest but definitely better. I just got the Connected Child based on input from other APs. I figure any insight is one more piece of the puzzle.

Best wishes as you work through this.

Yes, my daughter is almost 13. She is full of anger and loses control many times. She has lots of unanswered questions--who was her birth mother, does she look like her birth mother, why did her birth mother give her up, does she have any siblings...all questions that cannot be answered. My daughter was abandoned in China and there is nothing concerning her birth mother or family.

My daughter will do anything and everything to get her way. I cannot believe half the things she tells me. Even if she tells me she doesn't feel well, I can't believe her because 99% of the time it is not true. She just doesn't want to go to school.

My daughter is smart but does not like school nor does her homework. She refuses to study and I am no longer fighting with her to get her to study. So she is failing all but one subject. Unfortunately, she believes she can't fail but will have a big surprise when she fines out that she will fail.

My relationship with my daughter is what I call a dance of anger. She does everything to get me angry. Whenever she speaks to me, it is usually in a tone of disgust or anger. She works at pushing my buttons and is not satisfied until I am upset. It upsets me very much and she knows it, plus enjoys that it does upset me.

I try to talk with her and ask her about her feelings. She usually blames me for ruining her day at school or her life in general. When I ask her what did I do, her answer is about some peer who got her upset or she is bored and I should be taking her someplace and giving her money to spend.

She hates to have to follow directions at school or home. And she is positive she knows more than I do. She is a real challenge for me.

Hi Sharon, Welcome to the team. I'm so sorry you are struggling. Our kids do come with their unique challenges. Unfortunately this team is not very active. If you identify some of the issues you are having perhaps we can help or at least direct you to a group (Facebook, Yahoo, etc) where you can find some support. That part is just so important!

Hi, my name is Sharon, my husband and I adopted back in 2002. We have a special needs Chinese girl. Our child is more than a hand full--she was from day one.

I joined this team because I so very much need support and someone talk to who understands. Yes, I am crying out for someone to talk to, to give me some direction!

Hi. My name is Kristy. My husband & I will be celebrating our first anniversary in March & we are talking about starting a family. We have a desire to adopt as well as have biological children. My in-laws are starting an adoption ministry in their church & I am now the social media guru for the group. They have two biological children & two Ukranian sisters. My parents only have my sis & me but they have fostered family members. We have complete support & encouragement from both sides of our family (which is a rare blessing).

We have talked about adoption but hadn't made any for-sure decisions or conclusions. My mother-in-law has really been asking us a lot about our intent of adoption lately but we hadn't really had a major discussion about it. I haven't really felt any strong desires to adopt. However, the other day while working on some stuff for the ministry's Facebook page, I started having the tug at my heart. I kind of ignored it. But later, I showed my husband some videos I had found & I could tell he was almost ready to say, "Let's go get some right now!" LOL At the strong suggestion of my mother-in-law, I have started reading the book "Orphanology." I'm not even finished with chapter 1 & I'm already in love with the idea. I know it isn't an easy process & the hard work actually really kicks in once the child is home but I feel that ache that has been missing up to this point.

Thank you! It does look like a quiet group but I am happy to be here. Back when I first adopted I was on some very helpful adoption email groups it as my family grew I had less time for that so it is nice to be in touch with other adoptive families again.

That's awesome! Our little one is in Anqing (Anhui Province). I decided if I'm going to enjoy the sights in China that I need to get in better shape so I can carry around a little person and climb the stairs to the Great Wall.

How old was your daughter when you brought her home?

I have a big age gap too. Adopted my daughter when she was 10 and bio son was 1. We later added a middle child. It has sometimes been challenging to have birthday party themes (their bdays are a week apart) but other than that, I think they get along much better than siblings closer in age.

Welcome to you and I am glad you joined!

Hi Lesley. I adopted an almost 3 year old child from China as a single parent when my biological daughter was 10. It's interesting having the age gap - mostly helpful in my case, but sometimes a bit hard to figure out family activity fun.

Hello TJKERB and welcome! We are a quiet team, but I think very supportive. What are your SP goals?

My girls were adopted at ages 10 (now 18) and 12 (now 16). Attachment issues abound, though mostly in subtle ways. For example, my girls will hide things from me that I wouldn't have a problem with, but they must have thought I would have because of their experiences in their birth families. I usually understand and try to be patient about it, and then occasionally I want to scream!

Anyway, welcome and I look forward to getting to know you over time!

Also, hello to KVLOSINGIT (did I get that right?). How old are your kids? Thanks for joining and sorry I didn't get on faster to say welcome!!!

I have two boys adopted from Romania in 1997 and 1998. My oldest was 3 1/2 when we adopted him and my younger one was 2.

At the time we adopted, infants were usually not available. They both have had their difficulties due to spending their first years in an institutional setting so I am glad to hear that in later years children were able to be adopted at an earlier age.

I hope you and your family are doing well.

I am new to Spark People and have two adopted sons ages 16 and 18. I would like to hear of the challenges other adoptive parents have faced as their children have become teens and young adults. My sons are from Romania and have also struggled with attachment issues. I am so surprised and glad to have come across adoption information on a weight loss site.

My Partner (Paul) and I are adopting two girls (sisters) from South America (Guyana). We were mislead months ago that we would be able to pick them up in March and now it is August and we have still not been given a date to travel to Guyana. It is heart-wrenching waiting, but there is nothing else that we can do right now. We call often and try to nudge things along. Can't wait to be a family under one roof.

Hi! Hubby and I have been blessed with 4 children - two birth sons, ages 20 and 16 now, and a son and daughter adopted from Russia in 2003, ages 18 and 15 respectively. What an adventure! Wouldn't trade it for the world, but there were times I wasn't sure we were going to survive. DD has reactive attachment disorder and has been a huge handful but she has come SO FAR, especially in the last couple years. All four of my kids have special needs of one form or another, so it takes everything we've got to help them through. It is so exhausting but so rewarding. It is such a cool thing to give a child a home who wouldn't have had one, and to watch them grow!

Hi!

My name is Abby and I have a wonderful daughter from China, who is the light of my life. We are planning on going back to China for our second heritage tour this summer; she will just have turned 12.

I am trying to lose ~30 lbs before going back, and getting in better physical shape for the trip. I live in Alaska and the winters are long and dark, making weight gain really easy! I look forward to being part of this group!

Hello, my name is Kimberly (Kim) and I have been on SP for 10 months; however, I just found this group today.
I am 42 and had to have a hysterectomy when I was 14 b/c of a ruptured tumor in my uterus. I had convinced myself that I HATED children and that my inability to conceive was the greatest blessing in my life. But that has changed. Since joining SP I have gotten healthy in so many ways and have finally been able to admit to myself that I AM MEANT TO BE A MOTHER!! I am in college right now and have decided that once I am finished with my degree I am going to adopt 2 children internationally. I have Irish ancestry and am hoping to move to Ireland and adopt there. That way I will be able to raise them in Ireland. However, that aspect of the adoption is irrelevant - no matter where I am, or where my children come from, I will have them.
I find myself doing things now that are for them. Like eating healthy, studying hard to get good grades so they will be proud of me when they're older, and quitting smoking (I'm working on that and could use some support & prayers). I went to church yesterday to kneel in front of the Tabernacle (I'm Catholic) and ask the Lord to please keep my children safe and healthy until they are able to come home to me - where they belong.
I am really grateful that this group is here, and I hope to get to know you and become great friends with most, if not all, of you. Wishing all the best of God's love to each of you and your children.

Kimberlynn from California

Howdy all! Well, I'm back after a long absence from Sparkpeople... and my weight had hit an all-time high, but its on its way back down again. Not as fast as I might like, but... (shrugs)

I'm 40yrs old... a children's librarian in a public library, wife to a guy who has loved me thick and thin...now back to thick again and working my way back to thin(ner) to stay! I'm mom to two children... one born to us in 2001 after a year of trying on our own and almost a year with fertility stuff.

When our son was 3 or 4 when we started again with fertility stuff again. (It was also around that time that we discovered he wasn't just developmentally delayed -- it was looking more and more like austism.) We had always talked of 2 or 3 kids with one of those kids being a son or daughter from China. But after 3 miscarriages during the fertility stuffs (injectibles, etc) we decided that maybe it was like a message that maybe "someday" of adopting was now. Our paperwork was logged into China on 1/12/06. We asked for a boy or girl age 6months to 3 years old. 27 months later we got our referral for a 26month old toddler girl. And I still can't believe we've been a family of 4 for two years now! (The blog for our journey is http://ourjourneytogeorgia.blogspot.com )

My weight has crept up over the years and I kept vowing to 'someday' do something about it... and someday became NOW when my doctor gave me a scare concerning my heart. He'd had me go in for a calcium scoring test and the results came back with some concern for my right coronary artery. I'm actually scheduled for an echocardiogram and a nuclear stress test on 8/10.

I want to look good. I want to be around for a LONG time to take care of my family..and I'd like to be able for us to take a heritage trip when Georgia is a bit older...and have no problems with hiking around, etc.

sorry to write a "book" here. LOL

I'm Haley and my husband and I have a wonderful little girl adopted from Guatemala. She is now 7 (we brought her home at 1.5) and have been on a great journey ever since. I was normal weight until I entered my 30s and it has been downhill since. I will turn 40 next year and am determined to take off this weight!

I'm Phyllis. I've been on Sparkpeople for a while, but just found this group.

I've struggled with my weight all my life, but even more since having a family.
When I turned 35, I broke up with the man I thought I was going to marry. I decided, at that point, to stop putting off anything because I wasn't married. Essentially, that meant having a family. So, I started the adoption process, and 13 months later, brought home my beautiful son from Nizhny-Novgorod, Russia. He was 10 months old, and is 11 now.

Six months after I adopted my son, I met my husband, and we were married less than a year later. He was raising his son from his first marriage alone. We had been married just one year when I got pregnant with my daughter.

I went from single and alone to married with 3 children in 3 years. Today, our kids are 17,11 and 7, and while I have loved every minute of it, my own needs and health have taken a back burner. I need to lose 60 pounds, but my first goal is 30, which would at least put me back to where I was when I got married. It's been great reading all the other great adoption stories here. It is truly one of the best blessings of life.

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.

Hi Krystinemarie ... welcome to the group! We adopted our daughter in 2005 and our son in 2002. Both from Russia. I hear you on being an older parent and wanting to set a good example and to keep up with the kids. I'm 53 and DD is 7 and DS is 8. I've been slacking on SP recently but need to get back on track! Sunny2010 is moving along (16!! ... yeah!) and I need to join her !

Hello! I joined the team this morning and am looking forward to getting to know everyone. I am married and reside in Colorado. We adopted our daughters in 2004 and 2006 in China. They are the light of my life! Like many others who have adopted later in life, Im primarily concerned with two issues: setting a good example for healthy eating habits, and staying/getting fit so that we can enjoy more activities together as a family.

Another interest of mine is finding healthy versions of traditional recipes from China. Has anyone come across any sites that might help?

Just wanted to pop over and say HI. I am fairly new to sparkpeople. I have three bio boys and adopted a little girl from Guangxi, China last summer. I think that our family is finally finished and I'm now finding some time to concentrate on myself and losing the extra pounds that I've been carrying around since my first pregnancy. I started out needing to lose about 30 pounds and have lost almost 20 already. I'm anxious to get that last bit off. I found this site through someone over on Rumor Queen, but can't remember the name. Whoever it was, I really appreciate it and am loving the extra motivation that this site provides!

Hi Julie! Welcome to the group. I'm ML also known as bragbaby on the Kemerovo yahoo group. Our 8 yr old DS was also adopted from Kemerovo in 2002 though he was in the baby home in Anzhero-Sudzhensk. Our DD is 7 and is from Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo. It's nice to see another Kemerovo family!

Hi Cheryl!
Welcome to our group, we're thrilled to have you! Keep trying (it's NEVER in vain). Stick with it and you'll get there --- at least that's my mantra for today, since I too, am struggling.

Did you hear about us on Rumour Queen? Two close girlfriends adopted from China and they told me about it.

Hi everyone! It's great to see the new members on here!! For those that don't know me (I've sent out some emails to try to round up a few new members so some know who I am) my DH and I adopted our DS in 2002 from Kemerovo Russia. He came home at 9 months. We went back to Kemerovo in 2005 to bring home our DD who was 2 yrs 8 months so our 2 are 11 months apart with DD just turning 7 in January and DS 8 last week. I totally put myself on the back burner after DD came home and just kept gaining weight.

I did WW for a while with an at work program but when they couldn't find a leader for us anymore I stopped WW and regained the 20 I'd lost plus more. We have periodic get togethers here in Southern California for families that have adopted from EE countries and I met Val (our leader) at one of those. She mentioned SparkPeople to me so I thought I try it. I joined for real on 1/1/09 as my new years resolution and this one I'm keeping. It hasn't been a straight path but I'm down 45 and still working it. It's great to see you all here and hopefully we can encourage each other to be the healthier parents we all need to be!!

ML

CROTHERSY1 - have you looked on line for a Yahoo Group for families that have adopted from India? Also if you post your general location maybe there is someone on here that might know someone to put you in contact with. Keep in mind that we all started where you are ... just thinking and starting to explore. Good luck and best wishes to you!!

My husband is from India, and we have a 15 month old toddler boy, who is fun and an handful! I have always had a desire to adopt, and after my severe struggle with postpartum depression, my husband has become more open to the idea. Because of his background, we would have priority adopting a child from India over foreigners. But aside from talking about it and a little bit of research, we haven't gotten very far. Actually, I wish we could find another non-resident Indian who has adopted an Indian child to help us navigate this. But at the moment, we are waiting to find out about relocation for my husband's work, so this may not get further attention until that matter is settled.

My husband and I struggled with infertility for about 6-7 years before we looked into adoption. We adopted Alan and Karina from Uralsk, Kazahstan 9 years ago. Alan was 6 months old and Karina was 5 months old.

I put on quite a bit of weight with the infertility treatments as well as emotional eating.

Then about two years after adopting, I convinced my husband to quit a job he was totally unhappy with. He took a year to try some different things and in the end he decided to go back to school. That is when I found out I was pregnant. The stress of a one income family and another child added a few more pounds on to me.

Lauren, our third child, is 5. My husband finished his degree and is working full-time. Now that the kids are 9, 9, and 5, I have decided that it is time for me to take some time for me. Now is time for me to be healthier.

Hi all, my name is Jennifer and I live in Southern California with my husband. He's a firefighter and we've been married for 20 years. We tried having children for many years but unfortunately after several miscarriages we realized that it just wasn't to be.

I was really excited about adoption and after a year we started the process to adopt from Kazakhstan. We adopted our son Nicholas on 5/4/2007. He was 22 months when we brought him home and he is now 4. He is the sweetest little boy and loves giving hugs.

I've been overweight off and on since I was in my 20's and it became worse due to all the hormone shots during my infertility treatment. I haven't been happy with the way I look for a long time and I finally grew fed up enough to do something about it. I started WW and exercising when I returned from our adoption trip. Unfortunately, I came to a point when I hit a plateau and became frustrated and started not watching what I ate and not exercising and I slowly started gaining the weight back. So I've come to the realization that I need to get motivated again and hold myself accountable. I definitely need help from others to stay on track.

Let me start --

I'm Valerie. I live in Southern California with my husband, who is a professional musician. We've had an amazing life and we're coming up on 20 years of marriage! (Where's my award?). We gave birth to a darling little boy 13 years ago and then debated, considered, longed-for, was satisfied with, was satisfied without, (you get the picture, right?) another child. A couple of years ago we attended a welcoming party for a little girl from China and that was it. On the way home my son cried for the sibling he'd never had and we cried along with him. Woke up the next morning and started the process to adopt a little girl from Russia.

Milana came home to us on July 2nd, 2008. She's simply amazing. Funny, spirited, joyful, sassy, smart and as connected and bonded as any child could possibly be. We just adore her beyond words.

My weight has slowly progressed since the beginning of our adoption. I doubt there's a connection, I think that the onset of menopause is more the culprit. I'm happy with every facet of my life but my body. And that's a biggie for me.

I need to lose weight, move more, gain confidence, feel sexy again, and be a happier person, as well as a better role model for my kids. My son struggles with similar problems and I can see him traveling down the same road 20 years from now. He has a sweet tooth like his mama! Milana is naturally skinny, loves fruits and veggies, and is athletic. (Can you tell that she didn't come from our gene pool?)

So...here I am. This time I've given my weight loss a title --- it's POTS, that's an acronym for "pulling out the stops". I'm trying EVERYTHING I can think of --- from hypnosis tapes at night, to Acai, vitamins and supplements, becoming a team leader and more. Plus, of course eating between 1250 and 1400 calories per day, journaling every day, and exercising 3x a week (to start).

I need motivation, buddies and support!

Hi All -
Changing things up a bit and moving the introduction thread to it's own important place!

Even if you have already, please post something here about yourself (who, what, where), your health goals and challenges, and especially about your adoption. Where are you in the process? What country are you adopting from, or thinking about adopting from, or in the process of adopting from!

The older thread will be deleted soon and replaced with this new one!

Thanks!
Valerie
