Welcome to the Team Mollie!

Sorry to hear about your unemployment...always a challenge to re-invent oneself. I think healthcare may be a good direction, especially if you found yourself enjoying it in the past. There's always a need for health care providers...especially as aging baby boomers such as this old fart (lol!) keep needing attention.

Great to have you posting to our message boards!

Keep coming back and let us know how you're doing!

hell-o everyone my name is mollie and i live in western ky. i was laid off from my job of almost 10 years in nov. 08. i was a spot welder at johnson controls in cadiz ky. at first it was very depressing to lose my job and yes with the way the economy is it is still very scary. now though i have started to look at it in a different light. i plan on going back to school to try to earn a nursing degree. many years ago i worked as a nurses assistant and loved it so i figured that i could be a pretty good nurse. and i was so glad to find this team. now i can share my thoughts and feelings with others that r in the same situtation that i am and hopefully make some new friends. emoticon

Hey Debbey! Good for you to focus on your health and wellness despite all the trials and tribs you are facing. Often just doing this can help empower us to accomplish many other things in our life!

Thx Connie also for the book suggestion! :-)

A teacher friend who was also the head of a department at a state tech college was let go as of Jan. 1. He recommended a book that I would recommend to y'all. "Tapping the Healer Within" by Roger Callahan. It can be purchased on Amazon for around $10 in paperback. Connie

Hello, all. I'm on unemployment for 2nd time in 2 years. I'm a paralegal with bad lawyer karma (you'd think I'd learn to just stay away from them!) Losing a job is just dang depressing no matter when it happens, but at 53, and being separated, and having two minor children, and two grown children all living on my income (too long a story), and being seriously overweight, which sure factors in to obtaining a job . . . well, it's pretty scary. I am trying to get hooked up with a government job, but they are limited in my location. I haven't had health insurance in ever so long and my doctor just threw me under the bus this week when trying to see him to get medication re-written. But you know what? All this has only inspired me to get back to "dieting," and get my weight down to where it once was after I lost a lot of weight. (Since then had twins, quit smoking, etc., etc.) So I am going to spend my unemployed days visitng this website for the great inspiration I have seen here and try to turn things around for myself so that at least SOMETHING good will come of it! Maybe if I can lose some weight and get to feeling better about myself I will be more employable when the money runs out. Looking forward to the benefit of the group ~~

Construction and all it's related industries have been so badly hit throughout the country...so sorry to hear that you were one of the casualties!

But GOOD FOR YOU to get out there, get some further education, training to *re-invent* yourself!

And better yet...great move to stick with the Spark and keep yourself focused on your health and wellness...a wonderful antidote to depression and helplessness! :-)

Hi All,

I'm Candie, 49 and have been unemployed since April '08. Since I worked in the residential construction industry in California as a Purchasing Manager needless to say there is nothing out there in that field and commercial construction companies don't want residential construction experience. Every week a few more associates and friends are let go and the fear grows. I have taken this time and gone back to school to earn that long desired degree and this has done wonders to stave off the depression and feelings of helplessness that come with being laid-off - sort of anyway. I'm also working on myself to improve physical health by using all the tools SparkPeople.com has to offer, walking daily, and re-vamping eating habits. Yep, financially broke - but still putting one foot in front of the other and striving to make every day a positive experience. Yep, it's a sunny day here in So. Cal so I'm going to go put one foot in front of the other and walk a mile or 2.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the info on the unemployment increase. That would be nice if your contact was correct. Has anyone heard about assistance with health insurance for us unemployed folks? I was interviewing an agent for Medicare Advantage Insurance for hubby who is disabled and eligible for Medicare on April 1 and he mentioned that there was but that data was scares.

Connie and Emma,

I don't know when exactly the $25 increase will go into effect, but I've been told by the unemployment folks here in MA that when it does that it will be retroactive to the date the bill was signed into law. Of course they also promised me that my benefits were all set, only for me to have the same trouble filing this week's claim as I have for the previous 5 weeks, so I would take that promise with a grain of salt...

Hi, my name is Lisa. I am 47, a software engineer by profession, and live just due north of Boston, MA. I had a contracting job that ended in August 2008. That job, albeit brief, was the most satisfying work that I've had in the past 10 years, and I was so depressed when it ended that I put on 30 pounds last fall. In January I resolved to start using the extra time to take better care of myself, and I'm eating better and working out almost every day, and for the most part I'm doing really well. However the associated aggravations and stresses of being out of work and short on money really get to me. I'm trying very hard to not let these troubled times derail me, but it's really hard. I'm looking forward to talking with others who are in the same boat as I am.

I just sent an email to one of my Senators about that. I encourage everyone to do that. Perhaps someone will answer the question and then it can be posted here.

Found this team only this morning. After nearly 40 years with an agency, my position was eliminated last October. I am hoping the employment extension and $25 increase starts soon. My husband is on Workers Comp and SS Disability since 2006. I have never been unemployed in my life! I am doing some volunteer work and that helps. Connie

My name is Tiffany. I am new to this group. I was born and raised in Kitchener, ON Canada. I moved to California with my dog 4 years ago to marry my husband. Right now I am unemployed, looking for a new job, and going to school at the local college here. I got laid off just before Thanksgiving. It came as a total shock. I am fine now, but I went from shock, to angry, to depressed and bitter, but now I'm fine and accepting it. Just doing the best I can and looking for a new job and keeping myself busy. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hi, my name is Tanya and I am going through my second lay off in a year. No fun. I did architectural drafting and with the housing industry the way it is, there are really no jobs. I havent had any luck finding any kind of job. Even part time. It sure is tough out there.

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this team, and I wanted to introduce myself. I'm Lisa, 45 year old mother of 2 (10 and 13). I've been a member of SP for about a month now, LOVE IT, and this team sounds like it might help our family. It's my husband who will be laid off from Washington Mutual effective 3-31.

I will be helping him look for a job!

There was a blurb on the news recently that the President wants the IRS to work with people to keep them in their homes. I wonder if Social Services in your area would know who you could contact for advice in dealing with them.

These certainly are challenging times. As a Pastor, my husband cannot draw unemployment. He is considered Self-Employed and has always had to pay his part and the employers part of the federal taxes too. We have the IRS breathing down our necks and the only income is my disability pay which isn't enough for groceries and gas even. My husband is going to have to go out and look for a job in the secular world when he hasn't had any job experience for years in the tightest job market in decades. I'm just so worried right now.

I was laid off in June 2008. I found SP in October but didn't know about this team. I worked for a profitable company who's new CEO decided to get rid of as many older employees as he could. My husband is a full-time student, and will graduate in May. We're surviving on our 401k's because my unemployment doesn't stretch far, especially having to pay for COBRA. Note, if you are in school, you don't have to pay the 10% penalty for early withdrawal. Our situation is dire, but not nearly as bad as others. SP has helped me tremendously. I hope things improve for all of us here!

These times have been very hard on many churches, forcing closures, mergers, etc. When one has poured your heart and soul into a church, a congregation the way you two have done...it has to be so difficult to move on!

Kudos to you for focusing on your health and fitness! This will help prepare you for the new opportunities life has in store! :-)

Hi fellow sparkers. I'm glad to have found this team. Our situation is a little different. My husband is a Pastor and his church couldn't afford to keep the doors open anymore and closed in December. So we're dealing with a whole lot more emotions than just losing a job. We've lost our friends and our church home. If he receives a call to another church, we'll be losing our home and moving too. There aren't many churches available though. When the parishioners are struggling the churches suffer too. This just capped off a horrendous 2 years for us. I was laid off from my management position with a company that I'd worked for for 10 years. After 6 months unemployment, I finally found a job making a whole lot less money. During this time we've also had a daughter with a brain tumor and lost both my stepfather and stepbrother to cancer. I have a chronic condition that is aggravated by stress and I've been off on disability since July. It certainly isn't easy to get back on track for my health when so much of our life is up in the air. I know that eating healthy and getting exercise is something that I CAN do so I've been concentrating on that.

My husband was terminated. We are quite poor. I don't know if he even qualifies for unemployment at all. I hope so. I hope they extend the Unemployment extension or I will have to fast for 3 months - outside.

After 28 years as a software developer, I was laid off in December with 30 other people. I was fortunate that I got severance pay, my husband has a job, and my husband was able to get insurance for our family. In addition, I have been provided with assistance in finding a new job. So far, I have applied for more than 30 positions. I am looking for a new opportunity and hoping to find a job soon. I didn't love my old job, so that helps a little.

HI. I was laid off my job in August 2008. I worked for an Architectural firm in CAD drafting. I have been in this career for about 15 years. I got some bites a first, but nos no one is hiring. I have been feeling I need a career change so I am signed up for courses in computer graphics at night and I start on Monday. I am still torn as to whether I should be taking courses to update skills in my field instead. I would like to learn Revit and take courses in green construction. I seNSE that there seems to be less need for drafters since architects are doing most of thier own these days. I also have a feeling that I am facing some obstacles with age descirimation.
I do have an art and photography background, so I think this new thing will be a good fit, but it is scary. Still need something for the bread and butter after the benies run out.
Looking forward to it- have been starting to feel like too much time on my hands.

Good for you Jes!! I am so glad for your loss.
Thank you Don. Frank was a little better today.
I just hope his atrial fibulation stays controlled by the meds. They drained his knee and it was all blood. He can move it better though but it still is double the normal size. I am hoping he is home by the time they schedule the arthroscopy. If not I will tell them to reschedule it. Hugs, Judy

Oh, how scary. I hope it all works out.

Anyway, I am new. I'm not laid off -- my topic is in the other forum and is called "Everything must go". This is because I've got big clothes (well, they're big to me now, but I remember when they were too small) and they are appropriate for interviewing. I hope I can pass 'em along to someone(s) here. :)

Thanks Don! My husband was rushed into the hospital last night and is in the cardiac unit. It gets scarier and scarier. I just hope he makes out OK. So far his heart is not cooperating. Hugs, Judy

Yes! I read that article yesterday. I was most shocked by Zales and disappointed by Starbucks. But more importantly, wow! that is a LOT of people out of work from all of those businesses!

Laid off after TWENTY-ONE YEARS?!?! How scary is THAT?! Wow...

These are truly frightening times. There was a sobering article in Forbes today titled "Where You Won't Shop in 2009" and it lists a number of upcoming fatalities expected to close shop later this year:

I hope Obama can rev this country into high gear developing Green Technology...I truly believe that the country that can successfully do this will be the country that leads the cutting edge in the years to come...both in productivity and efficiency.

It's great to have you joining our Team Diane...hope you can keep us posted on your journey!

Hello. I have been laid off since August 2008. I was able to work with a transition company for 3 months. It was beneficial because the helped me update my resume and I joined a job club. Which
we want to continue after the contract. I have replied to many job postings online. I have had a few interviews. It's very difficult to get the next job. I worked at the same company for 21 years!!! And I seem to be running into the mold of "too old/ too young and overqualified/underqualified. Some places simply ignore me mostly because of money, I think. It's grueling... And thank you for the job hunting hints page. There are so many people out of work who are highly skilled, vibrant and passionate. We are all in this together and to stay positive is really important!!

Have a Scentsational Day!

That's great advice, thanks. It's good to find a forum with people going through the same thing.

It's great to have you joining our Team!

Try to start building a routine for yourself that can keep you focused day-to-day.

Sadly, while there was nothing one could have done to prevent your lay-off, there ARE many things under your control now...your health and fitness being top of that list! Maintaining a laser-like focus on taking good care of yourself during this difficult time can help improve your resilience so that you can better weather this tough time in your life.

Keep coming back and post your experiences...good, bad and in-between. Posting is how one gets MAXIMUM benefit from SparkTeams! :-)

I was laid off on 1/9/09 after 15 years with the company. I've worked since I was 13...this not having a job thing is so foreign to me. The first week I did good staying in a routine, trying to keep things normal for my kids. This week I guess it finally all sank in and it's been grueling.

I know things will get better. I know when one window shuts another one opens...usually with a better opportunity.

In the meantime though, this is frightening. Glad I found this team.

WTG Lynn!

It sounds like you are taking great steps toward re-inventing yourself!

I've heard good things about MN as far as offering decent unemployment benefits while searching...and also surprising to hear how well MN has been doing economically compared to other states.

Great to have you on our Team!

Keep us posted on your progress!

Hello Team,

In october I was told that the company I was working for temporarily couldn't hire me on because of the downward spiral of the economy. I worked for a large architectural firm in Milwaukee. I was hoping this would be the start of my professional career, but have walked away from it with so much knowledge.

Currently, I am unemployed and living off of the state until it runs out. (Allowing myself to make the best of the situation and taking the time to improve myself!)No leads on permanent/full time employment because of the economic state of confusion!

I have enrolled in a computer class to improve my skills in REVIT, the new drafting program. I am also studying for the LEED exam and will be taking that late February. And, I am starting my IDP.

So I am trying to turn this frown upside down by taking the necessary steps at being the best I can be!

Gggrrrr! I was skipped over when Albertson's did their interviews on Monday. It's hard to not take that personally. I followed up on the application I put in at the community college and they won't be contacting people until around the 24th. I am frustrated.
