New to this team. I love time in the pool. I have a set of foam weights, foam belt and the water gloves. I use noodles also. I am a runner but have issues with sciatica so I am glad that I have the opportunity to exercise with less stress on my body!
I usually turn up the music and move it. So glad that my neighbors work during the day. LOL!

Wow! Congrats on your loss and the dedication to get there. Welcome to the team. I have missed a couple different classes this week and there's another one starting in a little bit but I think I'm staying home with our granddaughter. I think we spent too much time outside this afternoon. I still do have to get to Walgreens though..

Hello all! I joined the team earlier this year but just started working out in the pool again after a knee and then a back injury. I've been with SP since April 2011, and finally reached my goal of losing 100 pounds, with minigoals of 20 pounds at a time.

I want to work on losing another 20 pounds, and hope to work out more, both in and out of the pool. I've seen improvement in my muscles, and want to continue with my goals of a healthier lifestyle!

Also, the pool helps my joints, and is fun, too!

Hi team members. emoticon I've been with SP for 6 yrs now. Reached my goal weight once, then gained some back. On the road to reaching the goal, once again. We've recently started exercising in the pool; kind of like jogging in place; just something we do on our own, don't have a class we go to. We really enjoy it. It doesn't usually make me sore, altho, today I am. emoticon Maybe I did too many high steps? Looking forward to visiting with you all on the team page.

Hi groupies,

I'm Cheryl from WI and I was browsing for some teams to join. One of my favorite exercise activities is water aerobics. I really enjoy my pool time!! Just realized how much it was missing from life so I rejoined a gym for more than a weekly class. I have this goal to one day teach a water class myself. See you all around.

My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far Iíve finished two bags of M&Ms and a chocolate cake. I feel better already. - Dave Barry

Hi Kim! Welcome to the team! I recommend the videos of Karen Westfall--there are plenty to choose from, including one specifically for seniors. They're available from this web site www.waterworkout.com/index.php?route

(copy and paste in your browser if the link doesn't work directly).

If there are enough group members, perhaps you could all contribute enough $$ to buy more than one video so you have variety and a little cross-training. You can SparkMail me if you have more questions or want specific advice.

I haven't used a video in a long time since the gym has instructors but I believe there are videos available online and for sale. Maybe you can find something good with a search. Good luck.

Hi my name is Kim. I live in Florida on the south western coast. I am 58 years old. I have been doing water aerobics for about 9 years. My routine is pretty basic, as I do them with seniors from my 55 plus community. We have been using this old CD named Wet and Wild Celebration and it is getting pretty old. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of some CD's I could get to change up our routine. Most of these women are in their 70's and 80's, so it can't be to crazy. We also have limited space, as our pool is not one level.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the team. I love water aerobics and aqua Zumba and since we have an indoor pool at our health and wellness center, I'm fortunate to be able to do this year-round! I'm in my 50's and am adjusting to life as an empty-nester! I'm a registered nurse, licensed massage therapist, and certified health coach in Birmingham, AL.

I look forward to getting to know everyone!

Hi there! I am Wendy from NC.. I have been swimming my whole life. Life guard, swim instructor, all around water rat. Need to keep my gills wet or I just dont feel right. I currently swim 3 days a week and do aerobics 4-5 days. I have lots of weight to loose but started swimming again in July due to back issues. I could not move without pain. Now I take the steps, have no pain and feel like a kid again. Looking to step up my work outs.

Welcome, GRACED777. We're all pretty passionate about water exercise here. It's so easy on the joints, there are no mirrors, you can be social and do it with a class, or work out on your own. I've heard people say that they didn't like exercise till they discovered the water!

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Hi--I'm Barb (also go by Grace) and I am exploring the idea of water fitness. Right now am just enjoying looking--liked the comments on water shoes and the link to water workout videos I got from there. Thank you for being a resource!

My weight is day by day becoming more dependent upon Whose I am than on my circumstances and feelings.

Life here is a one-time deal. I want to live it well.

Hi Everyone! I'm new to the group and have just returned to Sparkpeople after being away for a few years. I'm a grandmother of 4 grown grandkids and want to keep enjoying them for a long time to come! I've been going to water aerobics classes one or two X a week and really enjoy it. With the help of this group and the positive, motivating support, I hope to go at least 3X a week or more!

Welcome to the water, Carolyn! No worries about the non-swimming; plenty of people in my classes can't swim and they do just fine.

The biggest problem/fear for nonswimmers tends to be feet losing contact with the floor and not being able to right yourself. Be sure you're in the right depth of water for effective exercise and stability: mid-chest. The payoff for this is that you only weigh 25% of your land weight at that depth! This is what makes your joints so happy. emoticon

To help with stability, I strongly suggest wearing water shoes. They will help your feet stick to the floor, and have the added advantages of a little more resistance during movement and some cushioning from impact. They don't have to be expensive. This time of year there are lots of water sandals and beach shoes that will work just fine. For diabetics, shoes should be a requirement for avoiding injury.

If you are a little unsure of yourself at first, try to get a place at the front of the class within reach of the pool edge so you can quickly balance yourself if needed.

Enjoy yourself! This is such a fun way to exercise! emoticon

Welcome! Water aerobics is a great way to exercise. The best level is to have the water just below your armpits-at least that's what I've been told and like the best. I also tell non swimmers to stay near the edge so if they slip they can grab hold. Other than that just follow the instructor and most of all ENJOY!

Hello to everyone in this Water Aerobics Group

My name is Carolyn and I took the first step to getting back in shape by joining a fitness center with a pool for aerobics.

I'm not a swimmer but I wont let that stop me :)The pool is 4ft - 4.5 ft deep. I'm 5'4 so the water is at my shoulders. I could sure use some tips on techniques to use or avoid.

THanks in advance :)

Thank you For the welcome.

For now I do keep the pain at bay with everything I do. Was told 4 years ago by a specialist I would need 2 hip replacements, which I did not do. I have not been back to him since. Have been to numerous specialists, doctors over the last 5 or so years with my hips and have tried and are doing many things naturally to help myself.

So far so good emoticon

Welcome! The pool is the best place to exercise with arthritis. I hope you can keep the pain at bay for a long time. I have had both knees replaced (2005 & 2006) and both hips (2013 & 2014). It's not a lot of fun but it does make life livable again.

Hello, I'm Paula a 49 year old married mother of two Jake 20 and Sarah 19. I've been a member of Sparkpeople since 2012 . I live in Brisbane, Queensland Australia.

I suffer from slight Osteo Arthritis of the hips and I am managing it myself taking natural supplements, try to eat healthy and when and where possible organically. I wear orthotic shoes and am generally trying to keep my weight down so as to not put less stress and load on the hip joints.

Have been off sparkpeople for about 1 year due to family issues keeping me extremely busy.

I weighed in the other day at 58.7 that is the heaviest I have ever been in my life. So I figured now is the time for me to get back with sparkpeople and shed some kilo's. I hope to get down eventually to 52 kilo's and maintain at that.

As a lot of exercise is not always easy for me with my hips (have to be careful what I do so as not to cause them any problems), I decided I should take up water walking again. (easier on the joints).

I will do this for 1/2 an hour at least 3 times a week. I came across this group through a friend saw it on her spark page so thought I would join.

Thank you for letting me join. Have an awesome day everyone . Wishing you all lots of good luck with all your weight loss and other goals. WE CAN DO THIS!!! Take care emoticon

Water exercise is the best at working all the muscles without all the pain. I've learned that after 4 joint replacements.

There's a water format that you may be able to find in your area called Ai Chi. It employs breathing and tai chi-like movement in the water that is very relaxing and meditative yet core-strengthening. Very calming for the heart rate.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Aloha! I'm back in the game after losing 130 lbs, then having a medical issue that resulted in me regaining almost all of it. I'm slowly beginning to heal and can finally start exercising again, as long as I don't get my heart rate up. Since my previous journey was all about getting my heart rate up as frequently as possible, this is a whole new game for me. But we joined a gym/rec center that has several pools and I've been walking the lazy river against the current. Talk about a workout! But it is slow going, so my heart rate doesn't increase. I also head to the deep pool to do arms and abs with the water weights. Water workouts were a huge part of my journey the first time and I know how to kick butt in the water! In fact, I had started my personal trainer certification classes and planned on focusing on water workouts. I can't wait to get back to being allowed to do that! But for now, I'm super grateful for my anti-lazy river :D

For what to do in the water, head to our discussion thread "Groovy Move Ideas". Lots of people have shared great stuff, including folks who work out on their own.

Hi. I normally bicycle. This is my first summer in Arizona and already, it is too hot too cycle. 110 degrees today. (My husband has had to come out and pick me up twice.) So we have this nice pool in the yard and I think that may be the best place for me to exercise. I have no idea what I am doing. I spent 40 minutes jumping, kicking, walking, and pushing down a beach ball today. Hope I did something right! Looking to learn from all of you.

I've been very busy with my "day job" the last few weeks and seem to have missed saying hello to several new members. I am just poking my head in to say hi--how is everyone doing?

Also, now that the team huddles are gone, it is taking me some time to adjust to the changes. When I used to use the the huddles, I used to take that opportunity to scan over the team's page. Somehow I'm not always remembering to visit all my different team pages the same way now.

Hi everyone! I just came across this team and I am so excited that there is a water aerobics team on here!! I teach water aerobics, shallow end and deep end classes, three times a week and I absolutely love it! I have seen so many benefits with the people who attend water aerobics classes regularly. It's an amazing form of exercise that I don't think a lot of people give enough credit to. It's not just for seniors. Water exercise can seriously kick your butt! Congratulations to all of you here!

Hi! I'm Alison. New to sparkpeople, and enjoying it so far. I have goals to get fit & eat healthier. I love the water and would like to get some water workouts going. I have some dumb bells and ankle weights & picked up a few books for ideas. Looking forward to what I can learn here on this forum!

Hi All: I'm glad to join you from Northwest Georgia. I hope everyone is finding the resources they need in order to get exercise, because it's really important. It took a while before I learned that the YMCA in Rome, Georgia has a heated pool and tomorrow will be my forth visit to workout. I have Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis, use a power wheelchair due to being mobility-impaired, & in water is the only way I can safely exercise. I've participated in some light water aerobic classes there, and work on my own doing routines learned over time. I look forward to participating in this group. emoticon

Hello everyone. I enjoy water aerobics. I have been doing Aqua Zumba for two years and now do two classes of Aqua Zumba and three classes of Deep Water Aerobics a week. I have done Deep Water, Shallow Water, Combo Deep and Shallow Aerobics, Water Walking, Aqua Zumba, and Balance and Stability. I enjoy them all but my favorites are Aqua Zumba and Deep Water Aerobics.

I don't use a floatation belt because of two reasons, one, I naturally float and don't need it. Two, my physical therapist who is a Aqua Specialist told me not to use them because it's bad for my back and pushes me forward since I float naturally.

I really love noodle work. At first it was a major challenge but my balance is better.

I honestly believe that what you put into the class is what you get out of it. It doesn't matter what class it is. A lot of it is about correct posture and core being engaged.

I'm excited to see this group because it's about something I enjoy and is apart of my life, almost daily.

MISCYLANE, some deep-water jogging is done while wearing a flotation belt around your waist. This is to help keep your body position stable, but will also keep you afloat.

You don't have to be able to swim, but you should feel comfortable spending the length of class in water that is over your head. (If you decide to try it, you may want to let the instructor or a lifeguard know that you aren't a swimmer, so they will know to keep an extra eye on you.)

Water jogging is just what it says it is--jogging in the water. If you're not a swimmer, you need to find out if the class is done in shallow or deep water. If it is in shallow water, you will probably be ok, since you remain vertical all the time with your head out of the water. In deep water, you wouldn't necessarily need to know how to swim, but you would need to be comfortable treading water in a depth over your head.

Non-swimming joggers in shallow water should also have the skill to regain standing position if they lose their balance and feet go off the floor. If you do shallow water aerobics, you should be fine as a shallow jogger.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

What exactly is water jogging? Is it necessary to know how to swim? I saw it offered at my pool, but I do not swim well, so I keep with the regular water aerobics class.

You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Hi! I've been Sparking since February, but today was the first day it occurred to me to see if there was a water jogging team. emoticon I got my first Aqua Jogger in 1991. I broke my leg in 1990 and the physical therapy (for most of a year) was rough. I was getting ready for a second surgery in January 1991 and knew I would be in a removable cast for months. When I saw the ad for water running, I knew it was for me. I've tried lots of other things over the years, but always come back to the water. When I lived in the Northeast, I usually picked places to live based on how convenient they were to a deep water pool!

Now I live in Florida, and can get into the water almost all year. I've never done a water aerobics class, but maybe you all will inspire me!
