Water exercise is the best at working all the muscles without all the pain. I've learned that after 4 joint replacements.

There's a water format that you may be able to find in your area called Ai Chi. It employs breathing and tai chi-like movement in the water that is very relaxing and meditative yet core-strengthening. Very calming for the heart rate.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Aloha! I'm back in the game after losing 130 lbs, then having a medical issue that resulted in me regaining almost all of it. I'm slowly beginning to heal and can finally start exercising again, as long as I don't get my heart rate up. Since my previous journey was all about getting my heart rate up as frequently as possible, this is a whole new game for me. But we joined a gym/rec center that has several pools and I've been walking the lazy river against the current. Talk about a workout! But it is slow going, so my heart rate doesn't increase. I also head to the deep pool to do arms and abs with the water weights. Water workouts were a huge part of my journey the first time and I know how to kick butt in the water! In fact, I had started my personal trainer certification classes and planned on focusing on water workouts. I can't wait to get back to being allowed to do that! But for now, I'm super grateful for my anti-lazy river :D

Hi. I normally bicycle. This is my first summer in Arizona and already, it is too hot too cycle. 110 degrees today. (My husband has had to come out and pick me up twice.) So we have this nice pool in the yard and I think that may be the best place for me to exercise. I have no idea what I am doing. I spent 40 minutes jumping, kicking, walking, and pushing down a beach ball today. Hope I did something right! Looking to learn from all of you.

I've been very busy with my "day job" the last few weeks and seem to have missed saying hello to several new members. I am just poking my head in to say hi--how is everyone doing?

Also, now that the team huddles are gone, it is taking me some time to adjust to the changes. When I used to use the the huddles, I used to take that opportunity to scan over the team's page. Somehow I'm not always remembering to visit all my different team pages the same way now.

Hi everyone! I just came across this team and I am so excited that there is a water aerobics team on here!! I teach water aerobics, shallow end and deep end classes, three times a week and I absolutely love it! I have seen so many benefits with the people who attend water aerobics classes regularly. It's an amazing form of exercise that I don't think a lot of people give enough credit to. It's not just for seniors. Water exercise can seriously kick your butt! Congratulations to all of you here!

Hi! I'm Alison. New to sparkpeople, and enjoying it so far. I have goals to get fit & eat healthier. I love the water and would like to get some water workouts going. I have some dumb bells and ankle weights & picked up a few books for ideas. Looking forward to what I can learn here on this forum!

Hi All: I'm glad to join you from Northwest Georgia. I hope everyone is finding the resources they need in order to get exercise, because it's really important. It took a while before I learned that the YMCA in Rome, Georgia has a heated pool and tomorrow will be my forth visit to workout. I have Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis, use a power wheelchair due to being mobility-impaired, & in water is the only way I can safely exercise. I've participated in some light water aerobic classes there, and work on my own doing routines learned over time. I look forward to participating in this group. emoticon

Hello everyone. I enjoy water aerobics. I have been doing Aqua Zumba for two years and now do two classes of Aqua Zumba and three classes of Deep Water Aerobics a week. I have done Deep Water, Shallow Water, Combo Deep and Shallow Aerobics, Water Walking, Aqua Zumba, and Balance and Stability. I enjoy them all but my favorites are Aqua Zumba and Deep Water Aerobics.

I don't use a floatation belt because of two reasons, one, I naturally float and don't need it. Two, my physical therapist who is a Aqua Specialist told me not to use them because it's bad for my back and pushes me forward since I float naturally.

I really love noodle work. At first it was a major challenge but my balance is better.

I honestly believe that what you put into the class is what you get out of it. It doesn't matter what class it is. A lot of it is about correct posture and core being engaged.

I'm excited to see this group because it's about something I enjoy and is apart of my life, almost daily.

MISCYLANE, some deep-water jogging is done while wearing a flotation belt around your waist. This is to help keep your body position stable, but will also keep you afloat.

You don't have to be able to swim, but you should feel comfortable spending the length of class in water that is over your head. (If you decide to try it, you may want to let the instructor or a lifeguard know that you aren't a swimmer, so they will know to keep an extra eye on you.)

Water jogging is just what it says it is--jogging in the water. If you're not a swimmer, you need to find out if the class is done in shallow or deep water. If it is in shallow water, you will probably be ok, since you remain vertical all the time with your head out of the water. In deep water, you wouldn't necessarily need to know how to swim, but you would need to be comfortable treading water in a depth over your head.

Non-swimming joggers in shallow water should also have the skill to regain standing position if they lose their balance and feet go off the floor. If you do shallow water aerobics, you should be fine as a shallow jogger.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

What exactly is water jogging? Is it necessary to know how to swim? I saw it offered at my pool, but I do not swim well, so I keep with the regular water aerobics class.

Hi! I've been Sparking since February, but today was the first day it occurred to me to see if there was a water jogging team. emoticon I got my first Aqua Jogger in 1991. I broke my leg in 1990 and the physical therapy (for most of a year) was rough. I was getting ready for a second surgery in January 1991 and knew I would be in a removable cast for months. When I saw the ad for water running, I knew it was for me. I've tried lots of other things over the years, but always come back to the water. When I lived in the Northeast, I usually picked places to live based on how convenient they were to a deep water pool!

Now I live in Florida, and can get into the water almost all year. I've never done a water aerobics class, but maybe you all will inspire me!

welcome Alice. I too rely on aquafit exercises to keep myself mobile. I'm 61. I go 3-4 times a week and do my exercises for an hour and I water jog for 10 mins. I have a serious heart condition and have to split the jogging up into 2 5-min. sessions and that's my limit. I'm amazed at your stamina - way to go!

Hi ~ I am Alice, live in Wichita Falls TX, married. Just turned 75 this year. Have a son, grandkids, great grandkids.

I have been doing water aerobics for about 3 years now and feel rejuvenated every time I get in the water. I go and do an hour on my own before class, then class for an hour, and then water jog for 45-60 minutes. We figured out how many laps (back and forth = 1 lap) to make a mile. I have clicked off the laps and my time. I can do a jog in about 45 minutes, according to whether there are other people in the pool. If I have the pool all to myself, I move quicker. I do this 3-4 times a week. It has been wonderful for the body. Sure miss the land exercising, but I have peripheal neuropathy in my feet that has progressed up to my ankles - no, I am not diabetic. The doc classified it as idiopathic because we don't know what caused it. I also have degenerative disc disease that causes my neck and shoulders to hurt. So the water has come to my rescue.

Guess that might be more information than you wanted here, but looking forward to getting to know everybody and chatting with all of you.

Greetings all! I started water aerobics two months ago, after I began having plantar fasciitis pain, which made my daily walks impossible. Some mornings upon awakening I have horrid pain, but it does get better as the day progresses. I am addicted to water aerobics and try to make as many classes a week as I can. Thursday I did two classes back to back, and it too was wonderful. I've lost pounds and more importantly inches since I've begun this activity and I am so happy about it!

I look forward to chatting with everyone!

Thanks for the warm welcome and the advice. tomorrow I will try a second noodle as I really like the exercise we are doing - if that doesn't work then I will modify the exercise! I can't wait to go back!!

Welcome, Lee! Glad you have found water aerobics, but emoticon that the prolonged suspension on a noodle is hard on your neck. Mine, too! Rather than a hand buoy (I assume that's the barbell-shaped thingy you're talking about), you could try a second noodle under the back of your neck and resting your head back in alignment with your spine. If that still is unsatisfactory, or you don't want to get half your hair wet, there are 2 strategies left.

The first is to do a few of the crunches or whatever exercise it is and then to take a break by standing on the floor and vertically realigning your body for a bit, then hopping back up into the supine position for a few more--back and forth up & down for as long as your neck feels OK.

The other is to say to heck with the noodle entirely because you should NOT be doing an exercise or in a position that causes pain. What should you be doing while the rest of the class is straining their necks? You can stand vertically and crunch any muscles the class is using--center, side, or diagonal. Squeeze the indicated muscles hard with minimal movement of shoulder toward appropriate hip. You may not be working against gravity, but you are still strengthening muscles AND avoiding injury.

I always try to make it clear to my classes that if a movement or the use of a piece of equipment causes pain DON'T DO IT! Not every exercise is for every body on every day. You are the expert on what works for you, and you are the one to decide to modify or opt out of something that isn't right for you.

One of the great things about water exercise is that it's so customize-able to individual situations. Make it work for you! And have fun!

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Welcome Lee. I don't use the noodles so I can't help there. I wear a belt - a flotation device - to leave my hands and arms free at all times. Perhaps someone will have experienced the same as you and know.

Hello! I am Lee from Michigan, soon to be 67. I just started water aerobics at our local high school yesterday - I will go on Monday and Wednesday mornings. I loved it! I am not an athletic type and don't swim, despite several swimming classes. I am glad to find this team.

One question - we did some exercises with the noodle on our backs/under our arms with our feet out in front. This put a strain on my neck - I tried to lay my head back in the water and even put one of the hand thingees (?) under my neck. Any suggestions? I was a bit sore yesterday after the workout but some Aleve and heat pad and I am ok today. I certainly don't want to overdo and injure myself - I walk every day but don't do much in the way of strength training on a regular basis.

CKing - thanks for all the information - you and another Spark member have been most helpful. We visited friends today who have recommended the accommodation they have used on 3 or 4 trips in Kissimmee. They've leant to us several of their brochures, maps and trip ticket from the CAA. I too have CAA and will have to go in and see them. We will be on a budget and will require a room with a kitchenette as I won't be able to eat out every meal without getting really sick. Won't know for some time exactly when we will be coming as it will depend on the schedule at my DHs work.

I went to the Y today and did the Aquafit and Water Jogging I missed yesterday. The pool I use will be closed for the rest of this week for cleaning and repairs. I think my pedalling machine is going to get a good workout this week!

well there is certainly LOTS of shopping in Orlando, there are gobs of outlet malls and centers down near the tourist attractions. If you like nature type things that's the time of year that the manatees are able to be viewed easy. they come into the rivers and shallow waters because its warmer. they LOVE to hang out near the power plant as well since it discharges warm water. Sort of a manatee hot tub. Lots of really nice parks etc to see as well. If you want beaches at that time of year I really like the west coast and further south. Sanibell Island, Marco Island, Lovers Key etc etc, that's all down in the area between Ft Myers and Naples. I used to live in Bonita Springs and some of the best beaches and shelling is in that general area. Bonita is between Naples and Ft Myers. I can also tell you where to shop and eat there as well. I go down that way often, I have an aunt and cousin who live there and I go to take care of my aunt. That area is rather wealthy in general, so I make a point of hitting all the thrift shops while down there. Its AMAZING what you can find for dirt cheap. If you will by chance be traveling by car and have a dog with you, there is a great dog beach in Bonita Springs. I try to take Leah( my service dog in my avatar) for a good romp down there when I visit. BTW she is quite the pool baby, her favorite thing in the world is to play Frisbee in the pool. I wear a T shirt in the water with her so I don't get scratched up accidentally. She loves to be in the water with people, but gets upset if anyone has their head under water, she will swim to you as fast as possible and try to pull your head up.

Cking - I find the 82 pool too cold for me - I get cramps.

If we do come to Florida, it will most likely be next Feb or Mar. Another of the ladies on here lives near there too and when I asked for a good place to base ourselves, she suggested Orlando. I don't want to do a lot of touristy things - I did those 2x when I lived with my parents - years ago but still we will do some. I just want to get away for a bit from the cold winds and snow of Feb early Mar. Lay about, do some shopping, etc.

Hi KSGamma- if you do come to orlando let me know I can give you a heads up on great places to eat, and some strategies for the theme parks etc. The parks tend to be crammed during the holidays. We wont get into the 80s during the day till november or december. and we are back into the 90s during the day by april or may. The big humidity doesnt hit till the end of may along with our thunderstorm season. We are very dry in the winter and late fall. If you fly in, it is often less expensive to come into sanford florida than orlando, its 1/2 hour north and some of the smaller airlines go though there.

I learned how to walk again in the water right after the accident, about 20 years ago, and I did a strength and range of motion class for years afterwards when I lived in North Carolina. I got spoiled to a real warm water therapy pool at that time. I cant find one locally, so the pools here are kept at lap swimmer temps about 82. Its a little cool for my muscles, but doable.

Hi Candice - I too exercise in the water. I haven't had back surgeries but have a number of chronic illnesses. I too belong to our YMCA - in Peterborough, On. Canada. My husband and I have been looking at a trip to Florida in 2014 and were thinking of coming to Orlando - a lot of coincidences. Good luck on your journey and keep up the water exercise - it's great!

Hi, I am Candice. I live in orlando Florida, am 54 years old and have had 7 spine surgeries. I learned how to walk again in the water. I cant walk very far on dry land, but can go forever in the water. I recently join the YMCA here in orlando and am doing a shallow water exercise class 3 times a week, and physical therapy 2 days a week. Right now I am pushing to get stronger, get some cardio in and manage to work out the stiff and sore from PT. Once I build up some strength and endurance in the shallow water class I will move to the deep end for a full on aerobics class. Inch by inch, pound by pound, day by day. But I can say I do feel better already.

New convert to aqua

No treadmill desk at work yet, despite several years' campaigning, but my workplace does offer a gym membership stipend. And after several years of trying--and failing--to find something at a gym I'd enjoy, I found Aqua Zumba.

Decent music, decent workout, no pain in the damaged (arthritic) toes later on, and lots of splashing.

Is it time to go back yet? -G-

See you in the water,

SJP

Hello All! My name is Melissa and I recently started back to Water Aerobics. It is super fun and my daughter is coming with me too. (She is 16) It is amazing how much better I feel. I had been having issues with my lower back and my knee earlier this year. I finally had to get up and drag myself to do some sort of exercise either though my body was screaming.
The very next day I felt so so so very much better. No more chiropractor. Plus we are eating much healthier. And since I'm on spark, I am also tracking.

I know from past experience that water aerobics helped to tone up my body rather quickly and the cardio helped burn alot of calories to see the weight drop as well. My health and my daughter's health was importantant so I had to make the decision to take time off of school. It was literally slowing hurting me. Oh I'm so thankful I am back.

So last week Water Aerobics 3 times and Zumba 3 times.

So to everyone that is struggling, do not give up on yourself. If you have too many calories one day, oh well just keep at. Eat what you want just add 2 veggies at lunch and dinner, like broccolli and salad. Your body will thank you fairly quickly. Good Luck All! You can do it I know you can!!!

nothing wrong with being pruny - blends in well with the sagging skin from dieting -ugh! 41- I don't think I could stand that! I have a sister that had that kind of weather when she lived in Texas and in the United Arab Eremites. Yest 21 is about 70. That's a bit cool for that time of year here but was nice after the really warm weather we had been having around 26 - not too warm for you, I'm sure, lol.

I don't go again until Monday--21 C must be about 70, right? It will be 106 here on Monday, so that would be about 41 C. I will definitely be in that pool that afternoon! I wish I could go every day, but I am still working and it is tough to schedule it every day. And I would be pruny all the time!

Lact8rn - I didn't make it to the pool today and missed it! 100 degrees - ykes - it was just a bit cool here today about 21 and some rain although the sun's out now. The Y keeps the therapy pool at about 94 degrees - I find the big pool way too cold and I get cramps doing my exercises. The aquafit really is great. It has really helped with my balance as well and you're right - get dizzy doing things on land.

Hi Lin,
I am 60 myself and also do water aerobics 3x week for an hour. I absolutely love water aerobics, I can go up to maximum on my heart rate without getting dizzy, sweaty, or exhausted. I couldn't do that on dry land! I have also noticed that my sense of balance is much better--I try to do some of the stretching and exercises eyes closed and it really seems to be helping with that. Today it was especially great because the pool was cooler than the 100 degree heat outside!

Hi, I'm Lin from Peterborough, ON. I'm 60 and am retired/on disability. I discovered aquafit while recovering from heart failure after being diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy (a stretched, floppy, poorly working heart). I took a class for approx, a year and a half that met for 45 mins once a week. I now do aquafit on my own at the local YMCA pool and do a series of cardio and strength exercises for 70 mins a session and try to go every Tues., Thurs., Sat. and Sun. I should have been there this morning but I'm in heart failure again and although I can often do a lighter version while in failure, this time my lungs are full of fluid and I'm not well enough. Often when I think it's time to add to my routine/change it up a bit, this happens and I have to start slower again and build it back up to where I was. Pretty much every physical effort is an exercise for me because of my low heart function but I do most of my own housework, most of the work on about 8 perennial gardens, and help with babysitting my 5-year old grandson a couple of days a week when there is no school. Aquafit is by far my favourite form of exercise - I can do so many things in the water that I can't do on land and when I am done a session, I feel like I've accomplished something and although I will be tired, I usually feel better physically. I won't join the team's current challenge/goal to drink the water because with my heart failure I have to limit my intake to 6 glasses a day.

Hi, I live in north MS. I swim at the Wellness Center where I am a member. In addition to the swimming I also walk/jog in the water and sometimes join in the water aerobics classes. I'm 53 with Lupus and Fibro and sometimes I don't get to the WC, but I am working on being consistent. I actually was able to swim a half mile today for the first time in over a year...and that was after I participated in the Water Aerobics class. So I was pleased with that. I hope that joining this group will help me to stay motivated.

Hi, I'm Claire
My pool just opened Memorial day and will be open til Labor day. So, I greatly enjoy going to the pool in the summertime where i do my own thing in the pool for exercise. I bring a noodle and sometimes water weights. I alternate kickboarding, treading water, bicycling, and water jogging.

Hi, I am a Lactation Consultant IBCLC/RN working at Mt Home AFB in Idaho. I am currently doing water aerobics 3x a week and started last fall. I am really seeing fitness progress, lost inches everywhere, and lots more energy and ability to do things I haven't been doing--I am 60--But weight loss is stalled for the moment. I also have 60 to lose! I just realized that! Anyway, I LOVE my water aerobics and I am jazzed to find a team for it!

I think once you feel how much better you feel afterwards that motivation won't be an issue---I do it year round---the only drawback for me is how cold it is sometimes in coming out but I take clothes to change into afterwards.

I have never done water aerobics, but have a bad knee, and was suggested to join a class. I live near a recreation center, so signing up for a class shouldn't be that hard :) It's getting the motivation to keep going that will be tricky for me. This weekend is a super summer signup at our rec, and I plan on signing up for the class during summer.

I have been attending a water aerobics class 6 days a week since January 12 this year. I will not miss the class unless I am out of town. The days I have been out of town, I have stayed in a motel with an indoor pool and have worked out for at least an hour a day on my own. When I started in January, water aerobics was about the only exercise I was able to do for any length of time due to my weight and the condition of my knees. Thanks to water aerobics and sparkpeople, I have lost 63 pounds in 4 months and I am now able to walk for half an hour at a time and ride a stationary bike. I just found this team and I am looking forward to being an active member.

I did w/arobics at a recreation center for a few years & loved it , havent been in awhile though , am really excited about being able to talk with members about different exercises we can do again , , cause I have more energy & don't get so tired out when I exercise in the water. Ready for some water arobic fun!

Hi Brandi, I exercise a loi in my own pool too either with a water workout cd or if that is too noisy according to the circumstances, I clip my iPod to my visor with my downloaded workout on it. Then I can use ny pool anytime without bothering anyone. This works well when traveling too!

Hi everyone,

My name is Roya, I'm 28, live in Southern CA, and just remembered all over again (after like..2 years of not really exercising) how much I LOVE water aerobics. Today, in fact, i did my first ever water zumba class which was so much fun.

I have about 69 pounds I intend to lose - after 4 cruises, a wedding, honeymoon, 2 surgeries, grad school, thesis, pregnancy, stillborn delivery, pregnancy and miscarriage. It's been a rough few months, but I just started a 30 day "loving myself" challenge - and starting water aerobics again was a big part of that.

Glad to be here!

It is a top rated facility and close to home so if I attempt to go anywhere else I probably just won't go...I tried to take it a little easier the last couple of times and it's not too bad. I just can't give the pool up for my hips and knees...thanks for the welcome!

I would urge you to try to find other pools in your area rather than repeatedly irritate your sensitive lungs. You need that air supply for exercise! Public pools and health clubs are not always the only option. Sometimes hotels/motels allow access to their pools; universities and high schools may have pools. Also, ask what kind of sanitizing system is used at the pool. Bromine, UV, and saline systems all produce less irritation to skin and lungs.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
