Hello everyone. I'm new to SP, and I'm really glad to find such a welcoming group. Like many of the people in this group I used to swim for my HS team, as well as lifeguarding and teaching. Between university and moving for work its been a while since I was in the pool, but now that I'm trying seriously to lose weight I'm looking forward to getting back into it.
I have signed up for the 30 min/day challenge, but its going to have to wait for now as I will be starting a new job with a much longer commute starting next month.

Hi,
I'm Rachel. I'm not new to SparkPeople, but I have just rediscovered swimming!

My gym has a pool (though only 22yds), which is not used much by other members, so I have come to think of it as my own! I am resolved to go swim every day that I am home (I travel, so it isn't always possible).

I've just started on Swimplan.com, and boy, did that kick my butt! I guess I just wasn't swimming hard enough before....

Anyway, I'm happy to find a team that sets challenges of a swimming variety. It's just what I need!

Rachel

Short-term goal: 5lbs per month.
Rinse and repeat....

Hi, new to this team but not to Sparkpeople. I just found this challenge team by accident. I am morbidly obese and have been told by drs that I need a knee replacement and can't do strength training or cardio that strains my knee. Which pretty much leaves me biking and swimming. I have a huge butt so biking is out for me. I have been a swimmer all my life but never for exercise, just for pleasure. Since March I have been trying to swim consistently 3 times a week and just recently upped my time to 60 min. Consistency has been my problem and probably only average 2 swims a week and I know that isn't enough. That's why I am here.

I'm Carol - I'm a pretty strong swimmer, even though I'm slow. I'm training to take part in an open water swimming challenge that comprises 10 swims of 1 mile each in dams and lakes...looking forward to it, it's a different kind of sport.

I just joined! I learned how to swim about four months ago, and now I'm training for a mile swim in a month. I'm working to get scuba certified, and over all, I'm trying to get a job on boat, especially for water quality.

I just found out that I am capable of getting up early before work and working out! So I'm hoping to get up each day and swim a half hour to and hour each week day.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

Seaain Gray. On my birthday, I decided to start swimming relatively seriously again. I've been maintaining for a long time, but was in fact putting on weight.

Starting in May, I took my distance up to 12,000 yards a week. Three weeks later I went to 15,000 yards. This is three (3) 4000 yard sessions and one (1) 3000 yard session. This takes about 260 minutes to complete.

I'm going to increase my distance gradually to 20000 yards per week at which point I will start open water training when the weather permits. My ultimate goal - at this level - will be to enter and complete the Lake Champlain 8 mile swim next August.

Since starting this regimen I have gone from 232 pounds to 203.5 this morning. I have kind of leveled off and am looking for ways to continue the weight loss, though fitness comes first, as does healthy eating. I joined this place precisely because I was NOT eating healthy and it was impacting my performance in all aspects of my life.

Other than that? I'm a 50 year old male, two children ages 5 and 7. If ever I am to see grandchildren, I need to be in shape. This is just the start...

Nice to be here. I've joined the challenge, and am I suppose am adding at least 260 minutes per week to that total.

Kind regards,

Seaain

I found this forum on Spark Challenges, thought I would give it a go. I'm a triathlete who doesn't care for the swim portion mostly because I'm not fast and I don't know how to get any better. I usually avoid my swim workouts but I have a major race next month and I'm working towards doing a 1/2 Ironman next year. I want to enjoy and look forward to my swim workouts. Thought this team might be motivating enough to get wet!

I just joined this forum today and added the 30 minutes a day goal. I was a competitive swimmer for many years. I absolutely love swimming, but have gotten away from it over the years and gained quite a bit of weight, which has kept me from swimming much in the past few years. I have got to get the weight off and what better way to do it, than to do what I love? I swam 1200 yards tonight... I tried to do a little sprinting, but apparently my big body doesn't remember how to move fast! It's going to take a little while to get back into the groove! I felt great to be in the water again, though!

Hi Swimming Challenge Team,
I've been swimming on and off since I started my first lessons at 5 years old, beginners through Life Saving and one college credit in synchronized. Not competitive, though. Now, at 63, I am overweight and have a troublesome knee, so swimming is a great exercise option. A good friend invites me to swim in her backyard, oval-shaped pool, where I go 'round and 'round for an hour at a time - but only in the summertime (I'm in Michigan). In the other months, I can swim in a pool for $2 per hour, so that's a good option, too. I'm working part time, and I do volunteer work as well, so time is a limiting factor. I lost 10# last summer, but gained it back over the winter - not swimming. We'll see how this goes.

Hi Everyone,

I just joined SP and was excited to see this challenge about swimming. Is this going to continue in June as well or was it just for May? The last few years I have become lazy , unmotivated and fat, partly due to my plantar fasciitis I struggled with for 2 years. I hurt myself 2 years ago just as I started to work out again to loose weight, and even walking and standing was a struggle for two years. Now that my pf seems to be gone and I hit 41, I am craving for those years in my 20's when I was active, had more energy and was much leaner. I started back exercising and this time I took it really slowly. My main goal now is to not get hurt. Since I used to swim competitively for 8 years, swimming is what I think I should focus on most (easier on the foot as well.) I got my self a bike too and signed up for a triathlon ).

Hi All! I am new to this team. I was a competitive swimmer for 12 years. After I had my son I quit and am just getting back into training. I've decided that I need to do something competitive to keep me happy and motivated, so I am doing my first triathlon this summer. I am excited to be a part of this team!

Hi Everyone,
I am newer to SP and have swam forever. I am excited to join your group and challenges. I am on a swim team, but I am the slowest of our group, so I compete with myself, just trying to finish the sets and make my times. I competed in my first meet in 18 years. I am feeling really motivated but was asking myself, what's next? I think this challenge will be a great motivator. Can't wait to meet everyone

Hi everyone and happy new year. I am new to SparkPeople as well as to this team. I am finding my way around and am just beginning to do tracking, etc. I love to swim and teach swimming at an aquatic center located in southeastern WI. I swim about 3x's per week and log in generally a mile to a mile and a half. I like to refer to Total Immersion swimming and encourage you to check out the website. Many wonderful tools and techniques to sharpen swimming skills. My goal is to attend a weekend swim camp of theirs sometime soon.

Hi!
I'm Catherine. I'm a French Canadian and I live not too far from Montreal.
I joined SP almost 2 months ago now and I started swimming at the same time.
I go swimming in an indoor pool (outdoor would be deadly freezing in here at this time of the year!). I go twice a week for around 30 minutes at a time.
I try to do more laps every weeks and I'm not up to 40 laps/1 km, which is about 0.62 miles.

I just found this team and I think it will help me keep on swimming!

I'm Becca, from Illinois. I just started swimming again last week and can say have made great progress already thus far. I generally just do freestyle laps at the local YMCA for 30 minute sessions. I try to do this at least 6 times per week and so far have been doing great! emoticon

Hi all...I just learned to swim in March. It is something I always wanted to do and now I am swimming laps in both freestyle and backstroke. My goal is to someday be in a swim meet. Jenn is my coach/swim teacher and we meet once a week. I supplement this with 2 or 3 other days after work or on the weekend. emoticon

Welcome, Bethy, I have never measured distance in my open water swims. I was either snorkeling or just swimming. Plus waves kind of get in the way when you're trying to measure.
Cute little guy in your profile pic-he doesn't appear to have any weight concerns (but then he doesn't look like much of a swimmer either)-I guess his looks make up for it.

Hi everyone!

I was so pleased to find this team, I've recently gotten back onto SP and I love swimming, so... this team is the perfect combo. :)

I have some swimming questions though, if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

How do you measure distance when you're swimming in open water?

I live way rural and swim in a lake. I'd like to join the challenges but I truly have no idea how far I'm swimming. I just swim to the boat buoys and back until I'm ready to leave.

Is there a proper way to be timing my swims? I swim until I can't, then I float or tread, then I swim some more. I've never had lessons or been on a team, and it seems to me that I might be missing something in the science of distance swimming. Any suggestions?

Bethy

Hello All,

I'm Gillian, I'm 34 and I'm from Northern Ireland. I've always been a keen swimmer but have recently gotten back into it in a big way in an effort to lose weight (I've injured my calf on the treadmill so I've decided to do something less weight bearing until I get some beef off!)

I swim 7 days a week and do either a mile or 2 miles in each session. I'm currently using an indoor pool, but I would love to graduate to open water swimming eventually.

Hi everyone,

I'm Gemma.

This is my first time joining a Spark Team and my first post to the message boards. I'm also new to swimming!

I just recently rediscovered swimming. I took (and hated) swimming lessons as a kid, but a few weeks ago, I got inspired by my co-workers and joined the gym across the street from my office in order to use the pool. It turns out that I really enjoy it. I'm up to 1000 meters, three times a weeks, breast stoke only, although I've been working on remembering how to crawl.

I'm hoping that swimming will help me with my weight loss. I walk about 3 miles a day and do yoga about 3 times a week, but my weight has pretty much stayed the same.

I was really excited to find this team. I love to swim and have always used swimming to help me to be healthy. Whenever I'm not swimming, I start to feel bad about myself. When I am swimming, I feel like I have a lot more confidence.

I love the idea of "swimming the English Channel" I think that would be really great to do for real...even this goal is great.

I've been swimming pretty hard since early April. I'm swimming 3/4 mile each time I swim at the local YMCA. When I have extra time, I try to swim an entire mile at one time. Anyway, I just got to 19 miles since that April start. My main goal is of course to lose weight. I'm down 26 pounds and I'm feeling pretty good physically and mentally.

I'm looking forward to hearing about others challenges and accomplishments! Good luck!!

Hi Everyone,
I'm Rachael and I'm new to this team. I recently started swimming again after trying running for a while. I've always been a swimmer but I tried something new and took a swimming hiatus. I've been swimming 4 times a week and my arms and back are feeling great again. I'm excited to find this team with swimming challenges. emoticon

Hi! I'm new to this team as well as Spark people in general. I'm a 22 year old grad student that is trying to lose the last 40 pounds of the weight I put on in college before I get married. I love to swim and I am hoping to make it to the local pool twice a week so I can start accumulating the miles!

hello alena, welcome to our team!
the challenges are all ongoing, they are just a given distance (24 miles for the amazon river, 28 for lake ontario and 42 for the english channel) and you can log your distances on the individual threads after each swim and add them up until you finish the challenge. you can pretty much do this for yourself, or if you want some competition you can find a challenge where someone is just jumping in, like right now cherith is planning to start on lake ontario and lindsey has just started on the english channel.
i think if you look at the threads you will see how everyone adds their swims up, most of us also calculate the "to-go-distance", but you don't HAVE to do the math, just track your miles and add them up!
i hope you have fun withthis and your swimsuits will all fit perfectly soon!

Hey guys! I am a former lifeguard/swim instructor and I am finally getting back in the pool... My suits are all too tight, but I am determined to wear them as I slim down till they don't squeeze me to death! I don't know if I quite understand the challenges, but I have an indoor pool to swim in and would like to get in at least twice a week...

Thank you Bine. Yes, one of my old favs is still working for me. I'm trekking to the next town for their open/lap swim hours. Enjoy the weekend!

Many bright blessings,

hello, and welcome to the team, cherith!
if joining this team will help you to get into the pool it can't be premature! there is no one pushing you but alll the challenges are meant to tickle your ambition a little.
i am sure you will not have problems finding a decent bathing suit that fits. okay, i had to get a new one when i started out at 200+ lbs, but that one was "sagging" pretty quickly.
enjoy your time in the water and with our team, glad to have you here!

Hi! I think I may be slightly premature in joining the group but maybe it'll push me to the pool faster anyhow.

I'm Cherith, a 52 y/o stay-at-home grandma of my 11th grader's son who turned 1 on 01/01. I am a Music Minister and Cantor at my Roman-Catholic church and a member of a professional choir. I was a medical paraprofessional as well. And, only coincidentally, I am a Waterfront Certified Lifeguard, receiving my waterfront certification lifeguarding a beach on Lake Ontario for two summers, 2006 & 2007.

I'm wearing myself thin with my local high school community wellness center workouts, the Boot(ie) Camp Challenge, and my family duties. But I did find a pool nearby to swim in the evening, and as of 1/20, if I get the $$ in time, our high school has lap hours M-F from 0600-0700.

My problem may be that my bathing suits don't fit!! Nice to meet y'all!

Many bright blessings,
Schisandraa

hey cathy, nice to see you made it over here, we can always use company on the challenges! the long distance swims are fun as long as you're not alone on a challenge.
if you have any ideas for new challenges just post your thoughts!

Hello everyone! I've visited this team a few times and have been encouraged by your long swims! I've decided to jump in and join one of your shorter challenges for some extra motivation to get to the pool now that the weather is cold.

Hi -
I joined a master's swim team in my area a month ago and love every workout I've gone to, but have had a hard time being consistent in my workouts. I love the idea of a challenge to keep me logging in my workouts.
Thanks!

Welcome Emily,
Congrats on the new addition to your fam. I'm in the middle of the English Channel swim with Mark in hot pursuit. Good luck with your journey.

Hi All, My Name is Emily.
I had once joined this team last year in June. I was under the username "LilMissBookworm". When School started for my oldest, I stopped going to the pool and then got pregnant.
I've rejoined Spark after having my third little girl and have restarted my weigh loss journey. I've also just recently joined the gym again and am going to start swimming this week! I'm so excited!
Happy to be back part of the team!

Enough is Enough!!

aaah, i get it now! i saw a feature about michael phelps just before the olympics where he was doing those same vertical kicks with a weight belt, so i thought this was some kind of endurance training you were doing. d'uh! now i feel stupid!
anyway, have fun with our challenges, hoping to see you around!

Oh I didnít mean swim with weights, I meant weightlifting. Although I have seen my high school coach give some of his top swimmers weighted belts for extra resistance on vertical kick sets. Treading with weights is really good exercise, too! Iíve done that!

hello frozenmusic, glad to have you here!
there are several ongoing challenges where you can just jump in any time you like. hope you will enjoy that!
i have never considered swimming with weights, i just read about your swim plan and am fascinated! i might try to do that. did you make that program for yourself or are you following some drill there?
i hope to see more of you on the threads and am looking forward to getting to know you!

Hello everyone!

I joined SparkPeople yesterday and am stoked there are teams for swimming! I used to swim competitively and play water polo up through high school. The college I went to didn't have a swim team at the time and my only option was doing laps before the sun comes up which I easily talked myself out of.

I played water polo in college but it was just club and I was the only swimmer. Nobody else liked to do more laps than necessary. (I got way out of shape)

My sis showed me SparksPeople and I'm glad she did. She and I are both former swimmers and we both have new goals. She's training for her first triathlon and I'm conditioning so I can join another H2O polo team.
