I was only a 109. :-) Oh, well! I still consider myself somewhat crunchy! :-)

Well I am a first time mom and into the cloth diapering, I support baby wearing and looking to get a carrier Ergo is the one I want. They are just so expensive. I deff carried my baby everywhere in the beginning. She always wanted to be walked around. I am new to the other concepts of Crunchy Mama. Learning and trying new aspects of attached parenting.

Got a 115. Mild by some standards. I love to go barefoot, but if I have to wear shoes I am in funky boots or clogs--with heels! LOL. I am an unschooling momma of 5, an artist, a knitter, a reader, and an introvert. Working through my hemp baggage (LOL) to make better choices for my own health and wellness.

I just joined today. I guess I'm a crunchy mama, though I never thought of myself this way. When my kiddos were babes they co-slept and breastfed. I preferred to wear my babies, and try to keep things as pure and natural as possible. When my partner delivers our baby in April we will both be breastfeeding, and I am thinking it will be nice to lose some of this weight that I've gained before that date.

Hi! I'm Sarah. 26, single stay-at-home mom to J (age 6, cerebral palsy, non-verbal, non-mobile) and C (age 9 months, mostly average baby). I have about 30 pounds to lose and I'm hoping to get the majority of it lost by my baby girl's first birthday in April!
I'm a vegetarian, breastfeeding, cloth-diapering, birth-options-supporting, intactivist, co-sleeping, baby-wearing, baby-led-weaning mama and proud of it!
Hey, ya'll! I'm new and an even 150! It's funny, cause I don't feel very crunchy - just mindful! Don't true crunchies wear hemp and wash their hair with hand made bar soap? lol

I'm 136 ... Super Nutty, Ultra-Crunchy, Granola Earth Mama!
The number might be a bit off since I'm out of the diapering/breastfeeding/baby stage, so I answered what I DID do when my kids were younger!
So, now I'm an unschooling crunchy mom to my 4 bundles of awesomeness who are now 20, 19, 14, and 7. And I'm a grandmama to the sweetest 14 month old ever :)
Glad to be here!!

I'm a 93. I EBF, co-sleep, cloth diaper, babywear, make my own cleaning products, etc. Things I want to improve on are switching over completely to natural beauty products (still using regular face wash) and eating more organically (money kind of keeps us from going all organic.)
I'm excited to be a part of this group and learn more about it!

Just joined this group. I got 151!! Super Nutty, Ultra-Crunchy, Granola Earth Mama!!
My DD is almost 5 and DS is 2, but we hope to add another one at some point. I made all my own cloth diapers, diaper covers, slings, and even nursing pads!!
I occasionally still use my slings with DS, but he's getting too independent for it these days.
I EBF both kids till 6 or 7 months. DD weaned herself at 23 months and DS weaned himself at 18 months. I wanted to keep going with DS, but he was done.
We home school, but nothing too formal yet. We work on letters, numbers, writing, letter sounds, colors, shapes, etc. I am a SAHM, so we are always learning :)
I hope to have a successful garden this year. We've tried in past years, but never had much luck.

this is funny! i took the test twice. the first time i only got 43 but that's beacause we are still ttc so i don't have any kids to say YES i DO these thing currently with. then i took it again, answering how i think things will be. i got 86. i don't think i'll every be a high scoring type of crunchy mom but i like the concepts and ideas and i'm going to sprinkle some granola into my family a little at a time. i really like reading about how others to things differently than how i was raised.

I scored a 112, but DS isn't in school yet (homeschooling), I don't need any feminine products, and our regular doctor is (awesomely) crunchy herself, so seeing her shouldn't really count against me. On top of everything else she does, including the book on being medically crunchy (does that make sense?), the woman asked me when BG came out with the bright colors (and that was at our first appt with her). :o)

Hi! New to the boards. I scored a 109 - Mmm! Love that whole-grain crunch!
I love that toddler nursing, toddler wearing, and cloth diapering! :)
I counted a couple of things strangely. I pumped and donated for a while so I counted that as breastfeeding someone else's baby since I definitely shared my milk. I also wish there would have been a category for Lactivism because I founded a lactation group within my company that is on its way to being one of the best corporate lactation programs in the nation! Wow! I got 147 Super Nutty, Ultra-Crunchy, Granola Earth Mama! I didn't realize I was so crunchy and I'm getting crunchier by the day.
I can't BELIEVE I only got 82 - sprinkled with granola. Is this because I like to wear shoes? I do/believe in everything below but did not have a homebirth and am not a vegetarian. Ah well, some is better than none, right?

Hey, I'm new to the group ... I got a 177.
Now the questions are "would you if you had the opportunity" NOT "are you doing it now or have done" ... because some things you would do them but haven't had the opportunity to do so. For example ... I follow total child-led weaning and would totally tandem nurse after the birth of another child. I never really had the opportunity to tandem because the children weaned before birth on their own, not by my choosing. Therefore the option - nurse during pregnancy but wean before birth - is not my choice in the matter because I *would* have continued nursing and not forced weaning since I practice total child-led weaning and the question is answer listed is would you make them wean before birth.... does this make sense?
Anyway, I don't have babies anymore, seeing as how my youngest is 6 now, but I'm still a crunchy mama! I had unassisted homebirths, practiced child-led weaning (and exclusive to at least 6 months), cloth diapers (a few were bought but I finally learned how to make my own!!), same with slings (what my life would have been like if it weren't for the sling!!), do as much growing of own organic foods as possible and buy as local as possible, eat in the seasons, hunt and kill our own meat (not that eat a lot of it either way) etc, etc, etc.
I use herbals almost exclusively for everything. When I get to something really big that I can't successfully treat then I turn to the med dr (but I'm becoming an osteopathic dr myself - for forensic medicine - but I can still treat my own family!!). I certainly do NOT vaccinate at all either. It astounds me at how many people at the CDC (which was my original career choice until children took over :) ) do not vaccinate ... they know how these vaccines "work" and don't buy it ... yet they continue to do what they do for a paycheck instead... Makes me really glad I left! I can speak out without reprimand! I also co-slept until the kids moved out of our bed ... each at their own time and sometimes a younger one would move out before an older one. So each in their own time. I've been make-up free since I went into boot camp and I've always been barefoot as much as possible, sandals when I had to go out, unless it was cold or I was running, then it becomes socks and tennis shoes. So forth and so on.
As for schooling ... I do a combination of public school which I hate and homeschooling. I am extremely involved in their classrooms (yes all of the children's) and I help them with not only their homework and projects but we go more in depth than their classes do. In the summer we continue with our own version of school complete with science projects, reading, and anything they wanna learn about. We've also determined that if we have to move (a possibility that we are not looking forward to) then I will then be homeschooling full-time! That's the only exciting thing about the possibility of moving ... everything else would be the pits!!
We also do things like recycling, composting, alternative power sources, buy used, fix things instead of throwing away and buying new unless we can't fix, walk where we can, combine trips to use less fuel, and other green alternatives.
We also do a lot of volunteer work ... humane society, a horse rescue farm, home aid, habitat for humanity, soup kitchens, etc. And now I'm trying to find something like a candy stripper for the older ones to do as well.
Anyway, it is nice to meet you all. I am quite a busy mama with 7 kids under the roof (one away at college) so while I hope to stay active, the reality is, I will be here when I can!! :D

ha! ok--according to the quiz, I am barely crunchy... but I think some of those questions were a bit unfair. Like, homeschooling. We NEED two incomes in my family... home schooling can't happen. My son weaned himself from BFing at 6 months... so... no chance to even consider tandem nursing...
anyway... it was a fun quiz!
"Maybe you're tired and broken, you're tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear. What do you want me to do, to do for you, to see you through? A box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through." ~Grateful Dead
In general, no, I'm not really all that crunchy. Compared to most people I know, however, I'm seen as being very crunchy. I scored a 122 on the quiz, so I'm kind of middle of the road.
Ways that we're not crunchy-- I had hoped for a low-intervention birth with my daughter, but ended up with an emergency cesarean delivery. We fall back too often on processed pre-packaged food because, with our opposite schedules, it's often easier. This is the biggest area in which we need improvement, we tend to feed our daughter well the majority of the time, but we'd like to step it up and definitely need to overhaul our eating habits. We chose not to cloth diaper as Hubby is a bit overwhelmed at the prospect, but is willing to consider it for future children.
Crunchy-- We mostly do the standard fare (reusable bags, recycle, reusable water bottles, natural cleaning products.) I'm still breastfeeding our 18 month old daughter who was exclusively breastfed for 6 months (and my plan at the moment is for child-led weaning, though I'll evaluate that when I get pregnant again as I can't predict how I'll feel then, though right now, I'm for tandem nursing.) We share a family bed. I use a menstrual cup and practice FAM; I used cloth breast pads when my letdown and supply was still unpredictable. I'm a big fan of baby carriers and was sad when my daughter got too big for me to comfortably continue with my back problems.
I definitely see a lot of room for improvement, but am pleased with what we've accomplished so far. I'm especially proud of my husband whose family, while wonderful and loving, are really put off by the "crunchy" things we do.

Hi all! I', Allyson and I am new here and psyched to find this group! hmmm... by definition, I guess I am NOT a crunchy mama... but I try to be!
I buy mostly organic/whole/antibiotic free foods--but sometimes the budget or selection doesn't allow:( I use a mix of "natural" disposables and g-diapers on my son. My husband gave it a good try, but really hates g-Diapers... the nanny uses a mix... and I pretty much exclusively g-diaper. But, I try to buy the "organic", non-chlorine bleach sposies. Really, I try to be as green as possible where possible! You'd think in NYC it'd be a breeze, but sometimes that makes it more difficult!
I love, BTW, the name of this team! My husband always jokes around that I am raising our son to be a "dirty, crunchy hippie"... I just laugh and say, "what do you expect?! You married one!"
"Maybe you're tired and broken, you're tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear. What do you want me to do, to do for you, to see you through? A box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through." ~Grateful Dead
165; 169-130 Super Nutty, Ultra-Crunchy, Granola Earth Mama! that's me!!
if i could sew and if we had the $ to eat all organic etc, it'd be higher. i use a divacup, not sue how i'd make my own, lol.
i had a baby less than 6 wks ago and was planning a birth center birth w an awesome midwife. developing severe pre-eclampsia/hellp syndrome mid july necessitated changing to an ob, and then an induction even though my baby was almost 6 weeks early. i still chose to do it w no pain meds!!! (OUCH!)

146, but some of them i answered the less crunchy of the two options that i go between. like ec and cloth diapering. and i would have had a completely natural birth, prepared for one, knew almost all i could possibly know.... and things still went south resulting in an emergency, very necessary (unfortunately) cesarean. so my philosophy on that one doesnt match what happened for me.
i guess a number doesnt really matter, since im doing it all for the kiddos and myself/the environment instead of for crunchy recognition ;)

Hi! I'm Thea. I scored 164, although some of the questions didn't have exactly the right answer: There was no option for homebirth with a doctor in attendance, none for elimination communication with cloth diaper backup for the first 8-9 months, and none for mommy-led weaning at 4 1/2. I also checked co-sleeping all night every night because we did (for 22 months and 13 months), but we don't anymore. So if you count only what we currently do, it would be a bit lower. Anyway, I'm so happy to have found this team!

Hi, I'm Marla. I scored a 68 - pretty crispy! I would have been higher in score if I could breastfeed. Alas, I have underdeveloped ducts. :( I am a 26 year old cloth-diapering, baby-wearing, baby food-making mama to a 6 1/2 month old daughter named Irene. I am currently 22 lbs. into my goal of losing 100 lbs. I want to keep up with my baby girl without getting so tired and I want to be around for her and as healthy as possible. That's about all. :)

Well, I am new here and scored a 92..low end of the mmmm!Love that whole grain crunch!
However, I think I should get extra points since this morning I literally breastfed my co-sleeping babe while eating homemade granola! Really, I did ....oh and, the granola was made by mother, a doula who helped deliver my baby!!

124 - that was a cute quiz. I fade in and out of being crunchy, and as I go farther down this parenting path I seem to pick up crunchier habits (like cloth diapering). I've had two of my children at home, ebf, and now that I'm back on my feet, I'm going back to preparing most of our food (instead of relying on convenience foods). I garden, recycle, and try to reduce/reuse as much as I can.
To look at me, you'd think I was totally mainstream, but I do have a cruncy interior!

That was fun - 121 here - love that nutty whole grain crunch!
Ok ladies. I went to see what this deal looks like if I decide to take on the challenge. I found a site in English with a sister site that imports to Israel. They offer a package of 20 diapers, 10 absorbing pads and 3 covers. So: what are the absorbing pads? are they multiple use too? do i have to use covers? do the covers get dirty too?
having asked my questions, is it really cheaper? this is the only way i can get dh on board. i mean, what about the following:
- is teh above quantity in the package enough or do i need more?
- baby is 1 1/2 already. how many more diapers will i need in her life time? the package above costs about $455. i don't think i need more than $455 in diapers before she potty trains? what do you think?
I cannot speak for the older baby and mushy poo because my little one is still almost entirely BFing but I plan to dump what I can in the toilet and then swish or spray if I must Have you seen those that hook up to the water line going to the toilet?. Right now Babybear's poop is like butterscotch pudding so I just throw the diapers in the pail then when it gets full I put them in the washer at bedtime (my electricity is cheaper from 9pm to 9am) for a cold rinse then a full wash cycle then in the morning I rinse again (or tell my husband to) and then hang them on the line or throw them in the dyer depending on the weather and how soon I need them. I think it's so easy because there really isn't anything to fold and you don't have to worry about getting them out of the dryer before they get wrinkly because who cares! There are times when I'm so lazy the diapers just stay in the dryer or the laundry basket until I need it to do the next load (right now they're in a pile next to the changing table: I'm so lazy!). Normally, I stack my prefolds flat in a drawer then pile my fitteds and covers in next to them.

Hope you don't mind mama.. I will add my 2 cents here. The mushy poo.. well, for EBF.. throw it in the washer! For solids or formula you can switch and dunk, use liners, use a shower type sprayer, there are so many ways. As far as a year and a half yr old.. I have heard of a lot of mamas changing that late.. it helps with PT! If you need help mama.. and are serious.. we can help you out!! Just let us know and we can post some of our favorite sites and the things we have learned from it. I personally use prefolds.. there are other mamas here that use other diapers.. cloth diapers have came a long way mama!! And tell me.. can you sew? Just a word of caution though.. cloth diapering can be HIGHLY addictive!!!
MISSKAI, can you teach me how to wash? I mean, really, how do you get rid of mushy poo and make sure it's all clean? Maybe it will inspire me to make the move. Also, will a 1 1/2 year old care about the change?

Crispy! That's hilarious! Rachel, I cloth diaper and I was very surprised at how easy the washing goes. I has to be at least as simple as going to the store to buy them, maybe easier since it's right in my home but I know I wouldn't be successful at it if I had to go to a laundromat.

Rachel, I started out pretty darn un-crunchy! I am a rancher's daughter to boot! I vax my kids, even cir my boys. My oldest two go to public school. I have only CDed one baby out of three. My first was drug free, second I had every homipathic thing out there PLUS western med!, third I had drug free and am super proud of that one as the other two I was induced (first by breaking my water), Bug I used hypnobabies and LOVED giving birth! I switched to no meat because of health reasons (it is hard to eat the stuff when you have tummy trouble after) Up until a year ago, I used harsh chemicals and bleached everything! I did BF and wear my babies but like I have said before, it started out because of $! Although I wasn't raised the uncrunchy way.. that is what I had become! I have always called myself a wanna be crunchy mama, no matter what my score says! However, with this being said.. we were all brought to this group for a reason. To teach something or to learn something. I think you hit it on the nail when you said "but with crunch at heart when it comes to saving the environment and loving my kids." Different walks of life and views just make this group so much more fun! Don't worry about how uncrunchy you are mama! You were brought here for a reason!
Well, Lisa, like I said, I wasn't sure if I should be on this team. Now I'm doubly unsure! I'm only pretty crispy at 65. :-( Sorry guys, but some things just don't seem like an option to me. According to what you wrote below, though, let me comment. You wrote:
Crunchy Mama:
Mother who supports homebirth, breastfeeding, baby wearing, cloth diapering, co-sleeping, gentle discipline, etc. One who questions established medical authority; tends to be vegetarian and/or prepare all-organic foods. See crunchy and hippie.
SO as far as baby rearing goes - I'm ALL the way save for cloth diapering and that's b/c my partner would never help me and we do everything ourselves, so I don't think I could handle washing loads of diapers on top of everything else. Though I didn't homebirth - we do our births 100% drug free. I wear my babies all the time. I nurse them on demand. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that current baby will wean herself before people start criticizing - so far so good at 16 months! As far as food goes, I love my meat. Sorry. :-) Also, we're traditional Jews, so circumcision is part of our religious observation (which I guess in and of itself might not be so crunchy?). And I love shaving my legs and wearing makeup. My husband loves it when I do it too - so that's me. Not nearly as crunchy, I guess, but with crunch at heart when it comes to saving the environment and loving my kids.

lol.. it never last long enough here for me to hardly get any.. let alone pig out.. sigh.. Well, I am working on a couple.. dunno yet.. ask me in a couple weeks ;)
I've never made it. It's one of those things I have to stay away from because I cannot stop myself once I start. I ate pumpkin seed & flax or hemp granola with abandon when I was pregnant. I miss those days. Once I'm at my goal weight and can indulge a bit more I'll start making it. Do you have any good recipes?
I scored 99.. Mmmm Love that whole grain crunch!! I think I'm more eco-crunch than traditional crunch! I'll do my part in keeping diapers and pads out of landfills, clean my home with natural products, and limit my exposure to chemicals.
I wont be co-sleeping with my kids any time soon ;)

Those that haven't done this fun lil quiz.. jump in and let us know how Crunchy you are!
I got 154: Super Nutty, Ultra-Crunchy, Granola Earth Mama! I had think ahead about some things: I will be homeschooling but my boy is 4 months and I will tandem nurse given the opportunity but again, I just have the one little one for now. I think I mostly got points off for wearing makeup occasionally (though it is all natural & vegan) and shaving my legs. Neither of which I feel at all bad about.

I'm pretty lucky! I live in a "crunchy mecca"-Eugene, OR...it's got a lot more opportunities to live sustainably than other cities...and a bit more pressure too :P
Blessings towards all our journeys.

I scored a 91...just squeaked into the "Mmm! Love that whole-grain crunch!" category. I'm crunchier in some ways than others, and definitely am becoming crunchier by the minute now that I'm a momma.

Any mama who is in to natural, organic, holistic, environmentally friendly eco-living. Homebirths, natural childbirth, cloth diapers, using Natural Family Planning/Fertility Awareness, Do you breastfeed exclusively,Do you co-sleep, Do you wear your baby, Do you eat organic/whole/natural foods and limit your meat? Do you use natural cleaning products? Do you use herbal/homeopathic remedies? What's your take on childhood vaccinations? Do you or will you homeschool? Do you use cloth/re-usable products for mom?
Here is the def: Urban Dictionary online has a definition for crunchy mama.
So by this definition are you a crunchy mama?
And, yes I am a wannabe crunchy mommy! I try to live like this, but I’m human and I do make the occasional slip up.
I blame it on there being no Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods supermarkets within hundreds of miles! We don't even have a tiny health food store for at least 50!
