Good evening everyone. I have 6 cats indoors and we are lucky enough to have a 16' by 20' double screened porch. There is mesh on the outside and inside we have the half-inch screen that they can't tear. We have wide ledges built around so they can lay up there and view the world. In the winter we cover the porch with plastic and if it is sunny we can actually open the door and let the cats on the porch since it is like a hot house. My sister has 10 cats at the moment and she lives in the city. She has trained her cats to go on a leash. They all stop at the door and get their leash on and out they go. People who go past everyday know them quite well and they have their favorites also. Janice

I have 2 cats (Casey & Finnegan). They are indoor cats. When spring and summer are here, they want outside. We have a small area that we allow them to access (supervised & only for short periods of time), they love to roll on the warm pavement. We have also built some window perches for them so when in the house there is room for them to sit together or in their own windows and watch the birds and squirrels in the yard. They love the warmth and smells of spring and summer.

ANNZMAR, Robert Heinlein had a story based on exactly that behavior of cats, called "The Door Into Summer."

Oh, God! Having your cat fall out of an 8 story window and surviving!!! Incredible! I'm happy that she survived, but how horrible for all of you to have to go through that. The rain idea is actually pretty funny, although I have a neighbor whos cats try every door to see if the weather is the same through all of them..maybe it's not raining in the back yard..hmmm..

My sister has 2 indoor cat's, she is lucky, they never attempt to go out, i had 2 cats and 3 of there kittens, i had to get them rehomed as i live in a tower block and the mum cat actually went out of the window i am 8 floors up, luck has it she survived. After that i couldn't risk anything happening like that again. As it goes one of the kittens went to my sister who has the indoor cats and that was 12 years ago, she has never been out. The rain idea sounds good, a bit of rain will not harm them. Well goodluck.

We leave the front door open deliberately when it is pouring rain, so that the cats' few attempt to get outdoors have resulted in them being rained on. Now they think that's what the outside is like, and they don't bother.

Ann,
I was just looking at the HSUS website and they had some tips on deterring cats from going outside--you might take a look at it

I as well have had cats all my life & female ones usually. We have a new male cat Kody, less than a year old & we have decided to keep him as an indoor cat even though we have a 10 year old female that is an outside cat. He is driving me crazy, He is not called red rocket for nothing. (he is a orange/red tabby) I know if we let him out he would not be back. emoticon

Never mind spring fever, what does one do with cats who gnaw on the plastic shower curtain? The new shower curtain has about an inch strip of little perforations along both verticle edges for as far up as a cat can reach. Sheeeeee!

Yeah, cats are something -my other 2 cats that have passed on did not like collars. We tried it one time and they acted like they could hardly walk--they were low to the ground and it was so comical. Probably gonna have to fix that latch-'cause cats are amazing at what they can do if they really want something--wish you all the luck keeping Pearl in-
I tried to think up a name for Miss Kitty, but, she seemed to like that one--so, I thought that was perfect for her. Good luck

Hi Deanna,
Yes, my girls are spayed. I did the harness and leash thing with Cookie last summer, and although she was okay with it, after awhile, she figured out how to wriggle herself out of it. So I usually ended up carrying her back onto the porch with her leg halfway out of the darn harness. But shes a funny one, because even though we were in and out of the porch all summer, (and the door doesn't always stay shut), she NEVER tried to go out even when the door wasn't fully shut. But Pearl is another matter. I have a feeling she'll try to fly out given the opportunity. Maybe I should fix that latch on that door...I don't want any regrets later. Thanks for your reply, and by the way..Miss Kitty is a great name!!

Are your 2 babies fixed-usually that will help with the urge to go outside-my miss kitty was fixed when we got her-well when she found us in the winter time--she doesn't want to go outside--every once in a while she does but, we put her collar on and a leash (I'm there with her)and she's happy with that. Most of the time she just lays in front of the window during the summer and watches the birds --and is very content--I don't like her going out either cause I'm also afraid something will happen (from past instances) since she is all we have.

Suzanne, thank you for your reply. I actually do have a closed in porch that my girls have been spending alot of time in during the warmer hours of the day. I walked in on Pearly today hanging on one of the screens by her claws! She was chasing a fly. My first thought (after laughing) was oh my God, in the summer with just the screens she may be able to get out..Of course, I hope that doesn't happen, but still..I guess I worry too much. I'll try your suggestion for opening the window just a few inches, and also thanks for the hairball advice.

Most cats will settle down inside and not want to go outside after a few years. With kittens it's easy as they have no memories of outside. Make sure they have a place that they can sit in the sun and watch outside activities. a ledge on a window with afternoon sun. I have a enclosed porch so I put in a pet door that allows them to go out there and a bed pushed up against a window that I keep open all summer just 3-4 inches. Make sure you keep them lubricated so they eliminate hair balls regularly. (a tablespoon of mineral oil once a week in their food will take care of that)

Action is for today if you want results tomorrow.
My goal is a daily action and I strive for it to be a positive one. Suzanne

Greetings, my name is Ann, and I currently have 2 indoor cats. They are both adopted from local shelters. We got Cookie a little over a year ago..she's a beautiful Tabby about 3yrs old. She's a little chubby, but we've got her on a low fat diet which she seems to like, and she's looking better. Our (black) Pearl will be a year old in June. She's very sleek but a little skittish. Pearl helps cookie with exercise by tearing around the house. They're both great cats. The reason I bring up the spring fever is because these 2 are my first indoor cats, and I want to keep it that way, but am worried that they'll break out somehow. I've had cats all my life, and made the decision to keep these 2 indoors because of how tragically I lost my Nina 2 decembers ago, not quite a year after having to say goodbye to Tilly (Queen cat)after 18 years. It still brings tears to my eyes when I think about losing them. Well, I realize that it's up to me to keep these 2 inside..I just needed to express my concern I guess. Wish me luck! A.
