AlexJean ... I live in North Dakota now. After traveling the world as an Army Brat I joined the air force and continued traveling for the 24 years of my own military career. I retired in North Dakota becaue this is the last place the air force sent me. My husband retired a year before I did and we had set down roots in this community so decided to stay here when I retired.

As for your picture ... go to your spark page and click on the button that says "edit my spark page". Scroll down the right hand side of the page. Thanks Terrie! I am about 30 minutes from Worcester at school, but am more from the Woburn area (about an hour away). What state do you live in? And yes, we just got hit hard with snow last night and again tomorrow. It's crazy since we just had 60 degree weather last week! But I've always lived in Mass and have grown to love its seasons. How do I get my picture in my name box when I post a message?

emoticon AlexJean ... emoticon to the SP Class of 26 OCT - 01 NOV! It's nice to have you with us. Where in MA are you attending school? My parents grew up in Worcester and I still have aunts, uncles and cousins there. I never lived there because my dad was career army and we moved a lot. I've visited there a few times, but don't know a lot about the area. I guess you guys are really dumped on with this storm.

emoticon in reaching all your goals here at Spark People. I think you will find you do much better long term by changing habits rather than dieting away the weight.

Hi everybody!! It is now March 2009.. and I never introduced myself to the group back in October. My name is Alex and I am a sophomore in college in Massachusetts. I am under a lot of stress but absolutely love everything I have accomplished so far and look forward to a life with my longterm boyfriend. When I originally joined I had the intent of losing weight on a "diet" mindset, which I have continued to follow up until now. I lost about 5 pounds in the fall and have just realized that I have gained back 7 since January. I am struggling to not go back to my "diet" fix since my weight has fluctuated for the past year and a half. I want to live a healthy lifestyle (I actually love healthy food, but find it somewhat hard to get them at a college campus) and I love sweets. I had never been to a gym before I came to school and I do notice improvements when I go. I am not too far from my overall goal and would love to just get there and be able to maintain it without being actively "watching". So... I am going to startover and approach my goal with the correct mindset this time. I congratulate everyone so far and would love to get to know you all and find some support. I do enjoy the site a lot, but need some guidance. This is my first post ever! Keep it up all of you :)

emoticon Alison ... emoticon to the team. It's nice to have you with us. Good luck with your student teaching. My son is a high school senior and his goal is to become a high school history teacher.

Good luck with South Beach. I have a friend on another team who loves South Beach. She struggled through the first couple weeks because she couldn't have her steel cut oatmeal during phase one, but she loves South Beach now that she is past that.

I'm in the same boat as Lora. I joined this site months ago, but actually just started really doing anything about my weight this morning. Gee, that makes a lot of sense - starting on New Year's Eve. emoticon My name is Alison. I'm 29 and married with two kids. I'm working toward my teacher certification, and am starting student teaching in two weeks. Actually, that's why I've gained weight. I've gone back and forth, back and forth losing and gaining. About 2 years ago, we bought a house and money got super tight. I quit the gym because we couldn't afford it. I started working part time and taking classes, and my weight ballooned. I'm now the highest I've ever been - even while pregnant. :(

My MIL used to be the huge one, and now she's lost a bunch of weight and I'm the fat one. It was really embarrassing this past week when she took me shopping for student teaching clothes. I went up and am now a size 20. I'm probably over 250 Lbs, but I don't have a scale. So, no more. As of yesterday, I've gotten serious. Back to as much South Beach as possible today (it's New Years - so I'm allowing a gin and tonic with diet tonic water and probably some crackers and brie/crab dip). I was really good all day long otherwise...phase one south beach good. I even shoveled snow!

emoticon Lora ... emoticon ... it's never too late to introduce yourself. We're happy to have you with us. I think you have a great prospective in putting the emphasis on improving your health; that's really what SparkPeople is all about. Some people put the emphasis on losing weight because the things they are doing to lose the weight are making them healthier. Others, like you, are putting the emphasis on getting healthier, and will lose weight in the process.

Well, it's probably a little late to be introducing myself. I didn't start really using and exploring the site until about two weeks ago. I'm Lora, I'm 43 and I probably weigh around 210 pounds. However, I've decided on this umpteenth try at changing my lifestyle that I wasn't going to make it about weight, because when I do, it is too easy for me to classify the effort as a failure and give up. Instead, I am making this about my health. So - no weight ticker for me, no weigh-ins. Instead, I'm trying to make incremental changes. If I succeed, the weight will take care of itself.

While I know how to choose healthy foods and enjoy them, I work full-time, have an extremely busy eight year old, and am trying to finish my bachelors degree. So my life is one big time crunch. Hubby and I have decided to use the time we have to concentrate on exercise. So for breakfast and lunch during the week, we're drinking Herbalife shakes. We've used them successfully before and hope to get a good jump start with them and then transition into regular food after we get a handle on exercise and on dinner.

We're using the nutrition tracker to track what we eat and help us make better dinner and weekend choices.

We've started working out three times a week, doing Capoeira (a Brazilian martial art with a lot of almost dance elements to it).

So far I think we've done pretty well and hope to keep it up.

Best wishes to all for a healthy new year!
Lora

It's about my health, not my weight!

Sounds like you have a pretty full plate of good works. It must be very satisfying and heartbreaking at the same time. I have a friend who is a hospice nurse and I see some of your duties fall in that range. She is a strong person with a huge, caring heart. I imagine you must be the same sort of person to be able to do all that you do.

A Parish Nurse is hired by a church, parish, or synagogue to work on wellness issues in the church and community, to care for those who are ill or having babies by helping them to find care and advocate for themselves, etc. I do health teaching, advocacy, end-of-life issues, arrange meals for the ill, visit our elderly and make sure they are receiving good medical and personal care. I oversee health programs at the church such as lectures, flu shots, blood pressure and diabetes screening, and blood drives. I oversee church health advocacy such as the Komen Walk, the Alzheimer Memory Walk, and fundraising for CHADS (teenage depression and suicide prevention). I help our shut-ins stay connected with the church, medicine and disease education, etc.

Hi!

I am Mardi, but my sisters call me Tish-so that is my spark people name. I am 52 years old and a part-time Parish Nurse; very part-time Home Health Nurse, and the Administrator of Project Peanut Butter, a charity which works with malnourished children in developing countries.

I am married to Mark, a faculty member at a St. Louis, Mo. medical school and a researcher in the field of pediatric malnutrition.

I have two beautiful children; Megan-21 and Micah-19. Both are at university.

I help my father care for my mother who has had two strokes and has alzheimer's disease. My dad does the lion share of the work, but I spell him one evening a week and do all their non-grocery shopping, house work, and yard work.

I love to read, walk, talk to friends, and spend time alone. Seriously. I love those moments when I can simply be alone.

I have two sisters who are my path to healthy living partners; DiTrying and Julia who was supposed to join sparkpeople, but is being a weaner about it.

I am active in my church and if you need it, a great prayer partner!

Tish

emoticon Ebony ... emoticon to SparkPeople. Our starting weight is about the same ... I started out at 222 and am down to 129, so I know from first hand experience it is possible to lose a large amount a weight in the process of changing your lifestyle. It wasn't easy, and it wasn't fast. It took me 16 months to lose the weight and I have been maintaining my loss since June 25th.

Take the time to read the articles here at Spark People to learn more about nutrition and exercise. Use the nutrition tracker to keep on top of what you are eating and how many calories you are burning through exercise. Don't throw yourself into an exercise program that is beyond your current ability. You will get discouraged if you try to do too much too soon. Take it slow and build as your weight goes down and your strength and energy go up.

YOU CAN DO THIS!

emoticon Ebony!

There are many of us who are in the same boat as you. I never in my wildest nightmares thought that I would ever weigh over 300 lbs. But, unfortunately, I made the wrong choices and ended up there. The best thing I am doing for me is taking control of my life and my weight and changing those old habits that got me there. It's not so much about diets because diets don't work. What works is making better, and healthier, choices about what you eat. It's about choosing to be more physically active.

You can do this! You can reclaim your life and start a new beginning for yourself. Being here is the first step.

emoticon Kel ... emoticon to SparkPeople. I hope you're getting settled in MA. It's got to be hard to be uprooted from your family and have to move away from everything that is familiar to you. I was in the air force for 24 years and had to move around a lot too, but at least when I moved there was a whole support system in place to help me transition from one base to another.

The plus side to being in a new place is that you have a fresh start. This is the perfect time for you to change habits and get going on a healthier lifestyle, which will have the wonderful side benefit of weight loss as you begin eating healthy, well balanced means and get an exercise routine going!

Hi everyone. I've been on SP for about 2 weeks now. I'm 28 years old and been overweight my entire life. I lost about 30 pounds a few years ago, but after getting a different job, losing my mom, and a bunch of other things, my weight has steadily came back up. I've found it really hard to lose even a pound anymore, even with watching my intake and exercising regularly. :(

I'm working toward losing about 35 pounds, but doing it in small chunks of 10 pounds at a time. I'm getting married in October 2009 and that's my goal to hit.

I try to work out 4x a week... using my Wii Fit, cardio dvd's from the library, and walking when it's nice outside.

Hi everyone. It took me awhile to navigate around the different teams. I'm from the Chicago area, have about 75 lb. to lose. I joined SP on Halloween and have already met a personal goal--to attend my Curves facility 3x per week, something I have not done in several months. I also dusted off the treadmill and did 15 minutes on that. It's great to have something like SP for motivation. Thank you!

emoticon Hey there all! Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm new to SP but not new to weightloss. I lost a total of 60# in 2004 & 2005 leaving 200s behind forever. Within the last year or so I've managed to gain back 30 of those 60 and the closer I get back to 200 the more uncomfortable I get. emoticon I hope to have my before picture posted on my page soon.
I can't wait to get to know every one! I'm not much of a poster, but I do lurk, and I'll jump in if the topic moves me.

Hello all...I am really nervous about writing, but I need all the positive motivation I can get right now. I'm 36 and noticed that when I get nervous I go for the junk food. The junk food has been my comfort since being deployed. I have gained over 30 pounds. I stopped working out and eating right when I found out I was deploying. I joined a few days ago, and started feeling better but not like my self yet. Hopefully with laughter and fun positive motivation I can get to my goal of loosing fat and gaining muscle back. Thanks to all you for posting...it helped me to post too. How do you add the weight tracker?

I'm Kaley, here to find a better way of life, and figure out really how bad my diet is...I thought I was doing pretty good that i didn't eat that much, but when you look at your goal amounts versus what you took in everyday by just eating what you have available is horrible!!! I really need to go grocery shopping and follow the meal plan i was given when I started.

Hi Everyone! I'm Crystal from Alaska. I'm here on Spark People to loose 40lbs and actually have a healthy image of myself. I'm married with 3 young children and love critters (down to 2 dogs and 2 cats at our house preasently...) and I work full time out of the home.

I look forward to meeting everyone and hope I can make some good friends on this road to wellness!

Hi Everyone! I joined last week and thought I would introduce myself. I am a mom of 2 busy girls one is in school full time and one is at home with me. I work 2 part time jobs and after a horrible separation I have just moved in with a wonderful man. Since my life is improving in so many ways I wanted to give the weight loss / life change another chance. So far I like what i see, but I don't know if I will ever be able to keep up with all the posts! My long term goal is to loose 100 pounds so I imagine I will be sticking around for a while!

I joined on the first of the month but am slowly getting trhough the site, it's a lot to soak in and I don't get a lot of computer time.I am going to try to get to know how this works as I am not to keen on compters and this tech stuff. I have about fifty pounds to lose to get to my goal of 130. I have three kids, a husband, and a full time job as well as working at the church nursery on Sundays.I hope I can be successful with the help of the nutrition and exercise logs as we have already done some dietary changes. Good luck to all.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I just never bonded with anyone as I tried a few times. There are several new posts from people. Hopefully we can pull each other along this weight loss road as you did.

We are currently still harvesting corn and I have been at my husband's beck and call today. Sitting in a truck is not great for weight loss but hopefully I can get in a walk now since I am done moving him for a few hours.

Hi. I joined SP about a week ago but I'm just now getting a chance to introduce myself. You can just call me Bota, since I know my name is long and weird.

My first goal on SP is to get a handle on my eating habits, which I know contribute a lot to my weight. I love food that's bad for me, so I'm hoping to find things that are still good to eat but are also healthy.

I was brought onto SP by a friend of mine and we're working together to support each other in an effort to lose weight.

I love listening to music and I have a number of songs that I listen to that encourage working hard, never giving up and chasing down your goals. So I try to post one of those songs a day in my blog with a link to listen to it, to help encourage others to never give up.

Far better is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

Hi, I joined SP on November 1 and was a little overwhelmed by so much info on the sight. I'm new to the team, but not new to the weight loss journey. I have consistently lost and gained 20 lbs. for the last 20 years, not good. I'm all about losing and maintaining a new lifestyle for a lifetime. At 51 yrs of age I am ready to put yo-yo dieting behind me.

Hi,
I, like GoodasGold, am not really new. I have been around for about 1 year but I've decided that I really need to get serious about losing some weight.
Anyway, I look forward to getting to know this class and following you through this journey!

hi, everyone. looks like i joined SP just in time to make your class.

i am 30, and i found out SP through online searches.

about 2 years ago i started running and was able to lose 35 pounds over the course of about 18 months. i've kept it off for some time, but now i'm pursuing my mba and have been stressing more. running has taken a back burner, and i've hit a wall with emotional eating.

so, i'm trying to get back in control and do a better job of maintaining. looking forward to getting to know all of you!

I want to get my weight and diabetes under control not only my health but we are going through fertility treatments so we can have a healthy baby.
