Welcome! And I have to recommend Vegetarian Times, both the magazine and website, for the kind of recipes you are looking for. They have some great ones every month!

Hello All,
I have been on Spark for two months now; my gym staff told me about the site and I am on here every week day now like clockwork keeping a journal. I have lost 9 pounds, so I know it is helping! I have been a pescatarian for about 8 months, once I finally decided to say goodbye to chicken...which was much easier than I expected. I also love vegetarian alternatives...so I am always looking for a new recipe with tempeh, tofu, seitan, etc.

Good morning everyone -

I am new to the Pescatarian lifestyle. I will definitely be visiting this site and would like websites, books, etc. to help me along my journey.

I just turned 39 on March 16th and clocking in at a gross 163.5 lbs and I am sure the majority of that is fat. By this time next year I want to be rid of the fat and flab and be slick, toned and a healthier person.

Hope to meet some really nice, cool and informative people along the journey.

Hi I've been on Spark for a while but am really starting now! Been a vegetarian for 5+ years, recently went back to eating fish and would love to be more conscious about my fish eating choices.

Hi! I've been doing Spark People for about a month & love the daily recommitment, the tools for tracking, the book, and now I'm getting into the teams! I stumbled onto this one on the Michael Pollan team site & I think it's perfect for me. I've been a vegetarian for 5+ years - although we do eat fish (mostly salmon) a couple times a month. Love the lifestyle. Glad to be here!

Hi, my name is Kristen, and I am brand new to SparkPeople. I have been a pescetarian for about three years now, and my husband recently joined me about 6 months ago. I joined to become more aware of my food choices, and hopefully lose a few pounds as a result. I hate to exercise, but hope to maybe become motivated??

Hi! My name is Trina, I was a pescatarian for a little over a year, then I came to visit my son and his family. It is hard to cook and eat differently from everyone else in the house so it was easy to make excuses. I will be moving into my own place Feb. 1st, the grocery list is going back to pescatarian, I felt so much better then. If anyone is willing to share recipes, I am looking for some new ideas. Glad to be here!

Yay! I'm so happy to have found you all! I've been Pescatarian for about 11 months now. I hate to cook so I eat a lot of Morningstar Farms, Boca and Amy's meals. I don't eat a ton of seafood/fish but I do when I go to a restaurant as there aren't many options otherwise.
I have one question...What does it mean when there is "sticky topic" in the subject line?

Hi guys! I thought I would give this team a whirl.

I'm 32 yrs old and from MI. I decided to go vegetarian last fall when it was my husband's idea. Finally!!! He is the biggest meat and potato eater out there. I have cut out meat completely from my diet and I feel great. I also stopped eating cheese.

I do eat fish and seafood. If you want to know more about me visit my page!

Hi, I just joined this group and I am thrilled to find there is actually a name for what I am. I had no idea. I just know that I quit eating all meats except fish and seafood two months ago. I crave meats, but I take a Nature's Way Kelp capsule once a day and that eliminates the cravings.
I am 52, live in IN with my hubby and two cats. I am a crafter/artist and have a shop on Etsy. I have 98 pounds to lose. I have lost 67 lbs. and kept it off for 8 years. I am ready to lose the rest and get healthier and stronger.

Welcome, and good luck!

I know it can be hard to make a change, especially if your family isn't that into it. But throwing a piece of fish or a Boca on the grill while others have meat gets to be second nature after a time.

Hi All!

I'm Stef, a 23 year old from Chicago. I was a pescatarian for the first half of this year, but stopped when it got too hard -- I live at home and cook dinners for my family, and they are not down with Boca Burgers.

However, at the start of 2010, I'm planning on trying again - and focusing on planning out recipes that my whole family will like. I can appreciate a challenge, right? I see lots of shrimp in our future...

Anyway, I joined the group a little early, while I'm still sorta meat-y, but am hoping for a little motivation :)

Just found this team - it is a good match for me. Practically born a lacto/ovo vegetarian but only added fish/shellfish about five years ago.
Need to lose about forty pounds so that I can enjoy being an aging but fit baby boomer.

Hello all, I recently became a pescatarian in an effort to reconnect with my body and enjoy eating again. While I changed my lifestyle just under two weeks ago, I am already feeling more clean and healthy and am enjoying cooking more than ever. I am looking to cut meat out of my diet completely eventually, but am not in a rush. It's more for the lifestyle than anything. Is there anyone out there that needs a buddy? Would like to get more involved on a fitness level as well. One day at a time though... Nice to meet you all!

Hi! Unfortunately, this team seems to be dead, but I thought I'd say hello!

I stopped eating land-based critters about four years ago. Really wasn't that hard, and now I find that when I do take a taste of meat that there is an underlying bitterness that makes me go ick!

I find doing the fish/seafood option makes life so much easier when I go to family dinners or out to eat since, at least here, the vegetarian options are slim.

There are a ton of beef substitutes out there -- I like Boca and love going to Red Robin for a fancy hamburger substitute Boca patty. But, for chicken there is something really great as long as you don't mind eggs as an ingredient. It's called Quorn. Most healtfood stores and Whole Foods carry it. Also my local Kroger if you have that chain nearby.

It's wonderful! Great texture, really does have a mild chicken-like flavor. I'm less thrilled with their "turkey" roast, but many love it and often use it on Thanksgiving. I find it okay and it makes decent sandwiches, but the sides my family makes for T-day are so good that I'm happy just filling up on those and don't need this.

Take care!

Hi I am Leslie in
Texas. Have wanted to be vegetarian for quite a long time, but just have not been able to make the change. I have cleaned my environment of all meat type stuff and am ready to give it another go. Yesterday was meat free. I do plan to eat fish once in a while, and eggs and dairy. Hello to all.

Hi everyone,

I've recently become a pescatarian due to some medical issues, which made me want to give up meat and dairy. I thought about becoming vegetarian, but I love seafood so much, and I find that I feel fine after eating it, unlike beef or pork. I'm so glad that I found this group to share experiences with.

Hi all!

I've been a pescatarian since three summers ago. The few times I've tried meat or poultry since then, I've found I seriously dislike the taste of it! There's a bitterness to it now.

So I don't see my current dietary state changing. I like eating this way.

Hi there! Here's my story...I'm Dave, and I'm a recovering meat-oholic. It's been somewhere in the vacinity of 30 days since I've had anything other than seafood or chicken as a side dish to my veggies and rice and whatnot. I got started on the Mediterranean (did I spell that right?) lifestyle and I think I've lost some weight. I feel better, less bloated and fat. Of course, I'm still a big fella but one day at a time, yeah?

I don't think I really got into the whole thing for any environmental reason, or any animal rights reason. I just figured eating fish and chicken and some venison here and there (I kill it, I eat it) is just better for my body. No other reason. Does that make me a bad person? I don't think so. Some people might...

Anyway, I'm here, I'm new...just wanted to say hi. HI! haha

Hallelujah, I am so glad to find this team! I was looking for a vegetarian team, but I'm really a pescatarian, and have been for about 16 years. Just closer to vegheads than meat-eaters (and completely empathize with the veggies.)So I'm happy to have found this team, and such an exclusive one, too! (28 members to date.) Hello! I have been pescatarian for about a year and a half now. I don't know if I will stop eating fish and seafood. My son (25 years old) is vegetarian and has been for about 7 years. He eats quite a few carbs and I don't think I can do that and lose weight. I eat fish (mostly salmon or tuna) about 2 - 3 times a week. All my other meals are vegetarian. I do eat eggs (only egg whites) and diary (cheese and yogurt).

Thanks Sanourra for the invitation to join this team.

Oops! I already posted in the "why I'm a pescatarian." So I'll introduce myself here and beg you to forgive me if I repeat a few things.

I'm 31, married and living in Oregon. No kids no way. I have a mom to take care of and she's quite enough, thanks. :)

My hubbie has been vegetarian (lacto-ovo) for the past 5 years, so I've become accustomed to tasty, healthy vegetarian food at home. I rarely cook meat just for myself, but would eat it when ordering from a restaurant or for holiday dinners with family.

I've known a lot of vegetarians and vegans throughout the last 10 years, and finally just decided that I didn't want the fat and hormones in "land meat", and didn't want to be a contributor to the industry. Reading _Skinny B*tch_ helped with that.

At this point, I'm just not ready to give up prawns, crab, lobster, clams or scallops. I don't need to eat them all the time, of course, but do want them every once in awhile. I'm not so big on fish, maybe salmon every 6 months or so. *shrugs* We'll see.

I do feel healthier after eating a vegetarian diet over the last two weeks, only one day of which I ate seafood.

I also feel "thinner" after eating a healthy vegetarian meal. I know I'm not any thinner really, but maybe... lighter? LOL I don't know how to explain it. Does anyone else ever have that feeling?

Oops I did this all the wrong way around. So, let me introduce myself.

I told my sister I'd go veggie after our [meat filled] trip to Switzerland in October. But I am having a hard time, especially with the protein so am sticking with the fishies for now.

I don't see ever going vegan as I love cheese. Not soy cheese (cheese made out of beans? pu-leese), not low fat cheese, not any kind of processed cheese. Real cheese.

I digress! I'm joining an organic farm again this year for the free range eggs. And a part of me does believe that if I actually raised an animal and had the nerve to kill/clean it myself I would eat meat.

Honestly I don't know if fish is any better - they might not look cute but they do get over fished, are not killed humanely and the act of fishing kills a lot of other non-intended captures.

A conundrum. But I'll stick with the seafood for now. And cheese even though I know it has RENNET in it and is not even veggie!! Sigh.

I started to explore vegetarianism in college, mainly as a way to focus on veggies as a meal not as a side dish. Even now when I eat out, it is the side dish that captures my attention even more than the 'protein'.

hey, i'm kat. i'm 23. i've gone vegetarian two times already, but studying abroad and later moving to germany made that a little difficult (germans really love their pork). but, third time's the charm i guess, and i haven't eaten any 4-legged animals (with the exception of one ill-received meal) since august, and no land dwellers since mid-november! so far so good...

as to my motivations, i've been primarily responding to the meat industry in the developed world. on a macro level, i don't think it's sustainable for us to produce animals for slaughter as quickly as we do (especially beef) with so little regard for the impact it has on the environment and the economy. i'm no scientist, but many people believe we could develop the resources to feed the entire world if we'd stop spending so much energy/fuel/money/time producing "fine" steaks and focused on simple, local foods. on a personal level, i don't like the idea of pumping myself full of artificial hormones and antibiotics (i'm only drinking soy milk for this same reason).

that being said, i suppose i should call myself a flexitarian--i would eat game if i had access to it (like venison or boar), since it's a certain kind of free to "produce" it.

anyway, i guess that's me and my fish-eating self...

WOW I'm so happy to find this group, since some vegetarians don't consider me a "really vegetarian". However, I will admit that some people have been very supportive in and basically has said to do what I feel is right. I'm 32 and on the road to veget'nism but I made a pit stop at Pescatarianism and I seem to be enjoying my stay at it. However, one day I would like to be a veget'n but I love seafood too much at this point in my journey. Plus I have a feeling if I give up fish right now I may have to big set back. So I feel I need to master this in small steps.

The hardest part isn't falling but getting up again and trying again.

Hello.
My name is Desiree I'm 18 and I have been a pescetarian for 6 months now. At first I was a vegetarian but then decided that I wanted to eat fish and looked up what a "vegetarian" who eats fish was... That's when I found out that I was considered a pescetarian. It's a healthier lifestyle for me that I have achieved and plan to keep it that way. Being a pescetarian is important to me.

Thanks for creating this team.

I usually over consume my protein according to spark. However according to my doctors I am within the appropriate range and I don't eat any "meat" except fish, if you count it as a meat.

Welcome and good luck with a speedy recovery! I didn't have complete reconstruction, only tendon reconstruction and reattachment due to a tracking issue. But if you have any questions let me know!!

Hey All,

Jackie- thanks for starting this group!! I have cut red meat/pork out of my diet. I eat fish, dairy and poultry on occasion.

I am currently recovering from knee surgery. It was an old injury that started to limit my mobility. That and horrible eating habits started packing on the pounds.

I'm looking forward to making some progress in both my recovery and weight loss. It's great to have a place to go for those of us not at the full blown vegetarian state.

P.S. Does anybody have a hardtime getting their protein in for the day?

I rarely eat pre-packaged foods, excluding vegetable proteins (ie boca products). A large majority of all food consumed in my household is bought at the farmers market during the summer and fall or bought in the organic bulk section. However, weight is still a battle and the more I learn about eating small meals more often, the more I hope to apply it. Of course with work it's not quite as practical as I would like... but isn't that life?

Oh I wish you all the luck! You know, I can understand not losing much just by cutting out certain meats, I have been there and done that. This is still all a process for me, but each and every day I learn and grow and start to understand more about this world we live in. The good the bad and the ugly!

Cutting out beef and pork for me was a personal decision to just try and take in healthier foods. I have noticed that because I up my greens and fruits, and only eat baked or grilled fish chicken and other seafood's, I have become much more conscious of the Junk I was so accustomed to eating. Eating live food, whole foods, and as little canned and prepackaged food I can, I feel so much better. The old demons still raise their head from time to time, but life is a learning process, and I will never stop learning!

Hi Jackie. I became a strict Vegan back in January of 2006, which lasted all of about 2 months at which time I switched to eating fish and eggs. I don't consume dairy except in baked goods and in very small amounts, more because I'm lactose intolerant than anything else. I don't approve of the animal treatment by any means, however I quit eating meat because of the growth hormones and antibiotics.

I haven't really lost much weight even though I consume less calories in three days than some do in a week and found out its because I have insulin resistance so now I'm on a track to lose the weight that is bringing me one step closer to diabetes.

My goal is to lose all my extra weight while my husband is deployed, which gives me about 15 months to lose 50 pounds.

Wish me luck eh?

My name is Jackie, I am a 33 year old mother of 2 and have a wonderful hubby to boot.

I started seriously trying to lose weight at 265 pounds, and am making some great progress in my quest to my goal weight.

When I started to seriously start to question my diet, and how it was affecting my weight, I decided to give up red meats all together, although... I do occasionally still eat chicken and other fowl, as well as some dairy. I was interested in the vegetarian boards, but was ran off quickly, lol. So I decided to start a team for those of us not ready for a full blown vegetarian diet, but who want to cut out red meat in an effort to possibly transition to vegetarianism, or at least just eat healthier.

I love fruits and veggies, I do not eat any white pastas or grains, no soda and no sugars. In about a years time I have went from 265 pounds, to about 150 160. I think I am doing ok.

I look forward to having others join so that we may all learn together, and have a place where we can feel at home without being criticized for not being a complete vegetarian, and not have peta followers ready to run us off for still choosing to eat some meats and dairy. emoticon
