Sounds like you are wise and listening to your body as you condition, best to you.
Hi and welcome! I've used a variety of pedometers over the years and right now, I'm using "Freestyle" one.

I am a newbie that has just accomplished being able to walk a 5k. In my family that is a major accomplishment.
I alternate walking on an inside track with using a stationary bike for 45 minutes daily. My injured knee seems to appreciate alternating.
Does anyone have suggestions for pedometers? Mine seems to be missing half of my steps. Does spending more on one equal better quality?
