To answer your question from before - yes. The humidity gets bad. Esp end of July and August. :-( That's what makes summer so uncomfortable sometimes! :-/ And yes, winter is a dry cold....just meaning that even though there is major moisture, it doesn't feel humid...it is dry, making your skin dry, nose, etc.

I usually have all of my stuff pulled out of the ground by mid-October (only b/c we start experiencing frost by then). Generally you can plant in June, but we just had a hard frost a few nights ago! :-/ It's kind of a crapshoot here...you never know what you're gonna get!

Three weeks and counting, we are all getting excited about the move really looking forward to getting there and settling in. Been watching the weather and it looks great.

What is the gardening season like how late can we still grow things?

So if its hot and raining is the humidity bad? We don't really have humidity here I also read some where that in winter it is a dry cold up there (I had never heard that term before) what does that mean?

Still getting more excited everyday, we did well at the swap meet on Sat selling a lot of our stuff (I am only moving the essentials) we didn't make a ton of money but mostly I just want to be rid of things so we don't have to take them to the dump or move them.

Just look on a can of mosquito spray to see if it includes ticks. Always check yourself daily even when using a spray. Ticks aren't so bad. Spray, check, n remove any found.

I've been looking forward to hiking up a "mountain" near my house, but we were rained out yesterday. I'm hoping the weather on Wednesday cooperates!

No wood ticks for me yet, but I know it's just a matter of time :-)

Yes, there is spray. We just didn't bother to use any when we went out and about. Mainly the only bugs you have to worry about are flies (horseflies and houseflies), mosquitoes, and ticks. There are other bugs (bees, wasps, spiders, grasshoppers, Junebugs) but the other 3 are the most annoying!

I know what you mean about getting rid of stuff - we moved 6 years ago into our current house. We had only been in the previous house for 6 years, and the stuff we had to get rid of!!! UGH AND - since Spring Break we have been cleaning everything - attic, basement, garage, etc. And I've gotten rid of EVEN MORE stuff!! I can't believe how much junk we have! GOOD LUCK!!!

Sounds so good (except for the ticks) I am not a fan of bugs (is there spray for ticks?) We spent the weekend sorting our stuff and planning for our swap meet sale (I want to move only about 1/2 -1/3 of our stuff) it is amazing how much junk we have collected in the last 20 years.

We just did that yesterday!! We spent over an hour in the woods (kind of lost - even though we were on marked trails!) and it was a perfect day! :-) Lots of fun - and LOTS of hills! WOO! It was crazy! Beautiful scenery as all of the buds are starting to bloom and it was...like a postcard or something! We had a blast.

Make sure to check for ticks! My daughter woke up with one stuck on her leg this morning. We didn't use ANY spray at all...although we were wearing pants! :-( Blah.

Marquette is a great town. It's very cultural for being so small, and there are a TON of outdoor activities for all seasons. Take time to explore. There are things that I'm still discovering and I've lived in the area for most of my life.

You son will LOVE it here - even with the snow! There's so much to do outdoors!! And to be so close to Lake Superior........bonus!

Yes, it will be a change for you. You will run into people that you know - a lot! Marquette might not be AS bad as it is in other places around the UP. But..........you'll be surprised! :-)

We live in a city of 122,067 about 20 minutes from San Fransisco so its going to be a bit change for all of us.

My folks (who we are going to live with at least for a while) live five blocks from Lake Superior that has been a big selling point to my son who is very outdoorsy, though he as no consept of real snow.

My DH and I visited years ago and I do remember thinking it was so beautiful and there is so much open land.

You will enjoy it - it is beautiful here. Lake Superior is wonderful! There is so much to do and see in Marquette - and other parts of the UP for that matter! Do you live in an urban or rural area in CA?

Hi there new member, my name is Judy, I live in the Munising area in the Hiawatha National Forest.
You do get to see all kinds of wildlife. After 23 years up here the snow does tend to get to me near springtime. I do love the summers, after the black flies have gone, and before the horse flies emerge. Lol, Boy am I painting a lovely picture.
Right now I'm waiting the arrival of the hummingbirds. This is so exciting for me. I get lost looking out my windows at the birds and critters that come around. I also do some hiking here in the woods, there is so much to see. In summer there is beauty everywhere. In winter if your in shape for it, there is snowshoeing. Lots of fun if you look around.
Anyway welcome to you and your family. emoticon

I found it....it is sooooooooo funny! It's about a man and his family who move to the U.P. from a warmer climate:

December 8
6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.
December 12
The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.
December 14
Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life!
The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way.
December 15
20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer.
The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.
December 16
Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like heck. The wife laughed for one hour, which I think was very cruel.
December 17
Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20
Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Darn snowplow came by twice.
Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.
December 22
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white crap fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to poop. By the time I got undressed, pooped and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the jerk is lying.
December 23
Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.
December 24
6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the man who drives that snowplow I'll drag him through the snow by his nose and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been!
Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the snowplow.
December 25
Merry -bleeping- Christmas! 20 more inches of the slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.
December 26
Still snowed in. Why the heck did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.
December 27
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1400 to replace all my pipes.
December 28
Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE WITCH is driving me crazy!!!
December 29
10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30
Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver he is now suing me for a million dollars not only the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up where the sun don't shine. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.
December 31
I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8
Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

emoticon Welcome!!!

I am originally from Marquette - my parents still live there. I'm further north now in the "Keweenaw" or "Copper Country". Michigan is going to be a change - we get a lot of snow! There's a funny joke about someone moving to MI who'd lived somewhere warm before, I'll have to find it. It's SOOOOOOO funny.

The awesome thing is you get to experience all 4 seasons around here. I also don't mind the snow, except when it is still here in April...it gets a little sickening by then. (Not this year though! It was all gone in March!!!)

I'm going to look for that joke now - but ask any questions you may have. We have several members that are in the MQT area - plenty of us who know and can help!!!

Glad to have you here!!!

I was thrilled to find this group. My name is Cathryn and I am in Northern CA right now but my family (DH, DS and DD) will be moving to Marquette in July. I am really looking forward too it but a little apprehensive as well. I've lived in CA about 90% of my life and the kids have only ever seen a light dusting of snow so I am not sure how we will fair come winter but it will be an adventure for sure.

I am looking forward to getting to know lots of Yoopers and welcome any advise/thoughts on moving up there.
