Welcome Kathy! You're in the right place.
If you don't do this already: Closely look at the weekly grocery sales flyer ads, and stock up on sales. Gradually throughout the year, one sale at a time, buy a little more than you will use, and fill your freezer with sale meats and veggies, and fill your pantry up with staples. Write dates on with a sharpie marker, and use oldest first. Also I clip coupons.
For example last week a local store here had 16 oz bags of Birdseye frozen veggies, 5 or 6 dif kinds, for 88 cents a bag. That's cheaper than generic, AND, I had Birdseye coupons. Matching coupons with sales is beating them at their own game. I filled up my freezer.
Then if laid off or prices go way up, or you can't get out of the house due to weather etc., you have your own stockpile. NEVER PAY FULL RETAIL.
