Suze Orman is also on TV, so you might want to try to catch her show.

Thank you for the info and I will check out both. Keeping track of receipts is not as easy as I thought it would be......

Suze Orman is good to read if you're looking for help with your finances. The big difference between Suze Orman and Dave Ramsey is that Suze recommends paying off items with the highest APR first, whereas Dave recommends paying off items with the lowest balance first.

Dave Ramsey's book is probably available at the library. You might also find it used on eBay or Amazon. Yes, I'm working towards debt freedom. We've paid off a lot of debt in the past couple of years. Check out our threads on daily successes & frustrations & on credit card reduction.

Are you working toward debt freedom also?

Thank you for the reinforcement. I don't think I will go to the coins yet but your idea about any cash transactions that don't produce a receipt is going to be included in this month's facts gathering experience. emoticon

I agree with MsFixit. Looking over all expenses from a month is necessary so that you can "plug up" any gaps where money is leaking out. If you want to be really detailed, you can ask for a record of coins and cash spent as well. emoticon

I did that for myself some years ago and was appalled at how much money I was putting in vending machines every day. I started bringing liter bottles of soda to work in order to stop using the machines. Now, I don't drink soda at all; I make a large container of iced tea to drink while I'm at work. It's healthier and a LOT cheaper!

Be forewarned, keeping track of all expenditures is tedious; but in the end, it's extremely rewarding. emoticon

That would probably be a good place to start, so you know what's being spent & how it's being spent. Once you know this, you can figure out where to cut back. I'd also suggest reading Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover". A bunch of us are following his plan.

Hello! I joined SparkPeople in Feb of this year and have not been active for the past 4 months. I retired on June 27th and now I am ready to start the next phase of my life. I live with my younger daughter, her husband and my two granddaughters. I am to be in charge of the budget and we are all working toward debt freedom. In the past six months we have paid off some credit cards and greatly reduced our debt. I was thinking to ask them to bring me all receipts for any money spent during the month of July and use that as a bases for our formal budget..any suggestions are greatly appreciated and thanks. emoticon
