Our bike shop, has spinning classes but they are 60 miles away and too far to drive once a week. LOL I am looking at getting an exercise bike (used) with a fan so maybe I'll get that wind in my face feeling! More likely dust and dog hair (I have 3 dogs) LOL! But it will be something. I have a Specialized Expedition and just love it. It is "an old lady" bike, but so comfortable and easy to ride. Maybe I will get a sportier version later on. I would like to do some trail riding. Thanks for the ideas. Looking for a longer ride that my family can do this summer, something to work towards.
Here's to an early spring, although, I do enjoy winter. emoticon

Hi Chris! I'm glad to finally hear from someone. Cycling is probably the #1reason I'm much younger than my age! But winter riding is nearly impossible in much of the countryi would suggest you go speak to the folks at your local bike shops. Chances are they have a training program for winter and bad weather. The types and styles of indoor trainers you can use is extensive. You attach your bike..usually the rear wheel or sometimes both and you can set the resistance to your own needs. That means basically...the resistance or effort needed to pedal is made easier or harder with settings.
There are some machines which are like an excercycle where u don't use your bike. But they are fairly expensive and they come with a video screen which simulates a cycling route. This is what the pro racers use to stay in shape off season.

I would try a relatively inexpensive model. You might get advice from your local shop snd then go online or to ebay for a good deal. Also...you can still get out snd ride on those "nice weather" days we rarely get in the winter. Its hard to find a good winter plan..and trainers can get boring. I personally love that wind in my face and as I get older I coast more- lol! Can't do that inside!

Good luck! And just keep praying for an early Spring! I'm glad you love cycling because it is oneof the best cardio workouts you can get. Oh one last idea....my oldest daughter takes a "spinning" class at the YMCA. Much success to you! Scott

Hi, I'm Chris and I LOVE to ride my bike. My dear husband and sons got me back into it and bought me a wonderful new bike for my birthday. I had forgotten how fun it is to ride. Now it is winter time and Rosie (my bike) is parked in the shed waiting for spring. I went to the bike shop, just to say HI, and am missing my bike so much! LOL What do you all do in the winter to keep that biking spirit alive? emoticon

Hi and welcome to the team,
I've been trying to get some "Spark" into this team for awhile. I'm Scott and I've been a serious rider most of my life. I raced for a few years in Mass. and my hometown of Rochester NY. I just turned 60 last year and i ride less hills but still love to get out on the more rolling terrain. Your right about the benefits of biking...but as ive aged, the best benefit is what it does to help your legs...it is totally worth it! I'm with you on stationary bikes, indoor trainers etc. I get so bored that I just can't keep up a steady routine. I was so glad to get out this Spring. Winter here can keep u inside...a lot! We really need some enthusiasm for those who love cycling. I'd love to see the team members "kick it up a notch". Let us know how your doing and welcome to the team!

Hello everyone emoticon My name is Sandy and I live in New Mexico, I am a college student. I recently pulled out the bike (a ruby) road bike, before my college life I used to ride 20 miles a day and 60-80 on weekends.

For me this is a fun way to burn off the fatback, burn up some serious calories and great aerobic condition. I do like stationary bike or trainers, spinning etc..to boring and I won't stick with it.

Anyway, great to meet everyone and if I am not active on the site (which I am not) it is because this is my last semester to get my AAS

Have fun

Hi, I just started riding again after a long 7 year break. I've been commuting to work every day on a Trek Verve 1 hybrid for about 3 months now and plan on doing it year round. I've found through research and little experimenting that you can make a pretty comfy, warm ride in negative degree weather with the right equipment (I ride in the Albany, NY area). Cycling to work has definitely made my day more productive and puts me in a better mood when I get to work. Not to mention I hardly ever need to fule my car and I've been losing weight faster now.

I also have a Giant ATX 760 mountain bike from 1996 that is in need of some parts and maintenance before I can ride it again and hopefully I'll have it on the trails soon because I enjoy off road cycling the most.

Hi!

I have two bikes that are street/mountain type, one is a really really old Schwin, I still love it. The other one has shocks, it's a Women's Columbia. Really cool looking white with baby blue. I live in Southern California where its usually sunny, and ride casually around my neighborhood. I also like to pack my bike in the car and take it to ride along the beach. I'm pretty low key as a "cyclist," but I have been riding my bike constantly since I was little, never stopped. Love it.

Hi everyone. I joined spark people in April 2011 and have become a fanatic.

I have biked on and off for years. In the last month I have returned to the bike . . . . It was my reward for having lost 25 lbs. I ride a mountain bike on the road 2 to 3 days a week. There are lots of people on road bikes in my area.

One of my goals for this year is to work up to a 40 to 50 mile ride by sometime this fall. That is a long ride for a mountain bike doing 12 mph, but I think this is feasible.

Hi all. Glad I found Two Wheels. I have enjoyed bicycling a lot over the years and have just started doing it again about 2 weeks ago. Because of my knees I am unable to run or even walk for more than about 30 minutes. I have found bicycling and swimming work for me. For the motorcycle people I used to ride a dirt bike before the kids came along (XR 500, which will date me). Now I ride a bicycle, a Fuji Monterey 4.0 for comfort reasons. I live in Southern Oregon and we are fortunate to have a paved bike path which is about 20 miles long. I am up to about 40-70 minutes every other day. I look forward to getting to know you all on this team.

Hi everyone! I'm an avid cyclist who loves to tour back country roads and old rail trails of New York. During warmer weather months I ride about 12 miles a day as long as it is not raining. (Winter here in NY is a bit too brisk for me to ride with temps below freezing.) I look forward to sharing and gaining team support from the members of Two Wheels.

Hi everyone! My name is Jeanette. I've been an off again on again cyclist over the past 30 years of adult life. Just yesterday I fixed flats, oiled the chain and rode a bit. It felt GOOD emoticon
So today I rode our fantastic bike loop. Just five years ago I rode it in 40 minutes or less (11 miles) for two or three loops. Today I rode it in 72 minutes and I amazed myself that I could even go around it at all. I am re-addicted to cycling. I pray I can keep my focus and keep pedaling. It is so good for my body and soul. I look forward to meeting you all!

My name is LeAnn and I got a new bike for Mother's Day. I'm from Utah and am working towards the 22 mile Antelope Island by Moonlight Bike Ride on June 25th and the Bike the Bear Ride (50 miles around Bear Lake) in August. I have suffered from a compression fracture in my back for many years and that has made running difficult, I'm so excited to find an activity that is fun that both my husband and teenage boys will do with me.

My name is Jessie, and I am new around here. I bought my bike yesterday, and took it on my first real ride today. It is an 18 speed, and after 20 minutes of riding I was sooo discouraged because I felt like keeling over... I thought I cannot do this everyday!! And then it hit me, I wasn't using the gears right! So, after researching online, it makes more sense now.. I am going to set out tomorrow on another ride, and try to get the gears straight.. haha Do any of you have any tips?

Hey everybody! I will be twenty-nine years old this Friday. I live in Columbia SC, where I am a Montessori teacher for six to nine year olds. I have a Specialized Crossroads Sport.
I have had my bike for a few years, but am just now really trying to ride it in my day-to-day life. My husband has been a huge inspiration to me. He rides his bike to and from work every day.
We also do a lot of biking around town on the weekends. I have been riding my bike to and from a class that I'm taking since summer started (2 days, 2 miles each way). I'm hurting a little. Still, I love it.
I'm also hoping to decipher Columbia's bus schedule so that I can cooperate my bike riding in the school year as well. I'd love to ride the whole way; but it takes me 30 minutes by car.
I look forward to getting to know everyone!

Hi all! I live in Jupiter Florida - the hot hot subtropics. I have a Diamondback Della Cruz beach cruiser I ride.

I used to be an avid cyclist - I've had several mountain bikes. Just started riding again and I opted for a beach cruiser this time though as it is SO COMFORTABLE!

I ride every evening and take my camera along with me - just got that recently too.

Hey everyone! This team is awesome!

My name is Karlyn (its freakin awesome that there is someone else on our team named Karlyn because I never meet anyone with my name...hehe).

But yes. I am currently in Phoenix, AZ. Originally from Chicago and just moved from Atlanta. I'm 21 and I dont know all the bike lingo but I love to ride my bike; I do so mostly for commuter purposes and just because I love the wind in my face. Its very hot here right now and so i usually ride in the morning or at sunset (i wish i could ride during the day).

I ride a good ol' foot engine Diamondback Hybrid (not sure of the model). I prefer to do road biking and i hope to buy an awesome lowrider bike soon (they're like art in motion).

but yea. its great to meet everyone and i hope everyone is well :)

HI. I live in WA and am 68, almost 69, years old. I have a Bianci Eres Donna that I just love. It's a road bike, the one in my photo. I have only ridden 121 miles so far this year. That's way behind last year, but I have knees that are showing their age and need to be pampered. I like to do organized rides, since most of my riding is solo. It is truly my passion though.

Hi My name is Ellen and I have been on Sprarkpeople for 2 years now. I recently started cycling after I made the decision to stop running due to a heel spur. I bought a Cannondale Quick 5, a hybrid. I like to cycle and I can go for up to 25 miles painfree, which is totally cool. I miss running because I was in the best shape of my life. Now I am struggling to stay in shape and wondering how many days to cycle to get back in shape. Any suggestions would be great!
Anyway, I live in florida and I can cycle almost all the time, when it isn't cold or to windy. I ride along the beach and look at the sunrise and the waves. It is beautiful.
Thanks, Ellen

Hi Two Wheels
I am 50+ two grown children, demanding job, love cycle riding in the weekends to de-stress. Am planning a 150 km cycling adventure in the beautiful South Island of New Zealand in Autumn (fall). It is on an old rail track The Otago Rail Trail. Is anyone in this team from NZ?

My name is Anna, and I'm a proud owner of a Trek 7100 hybrid bike. I bought the men's version - it looked cooler than the women's version. :) I live in NYC so I primarily do a lot of road biking.
I am new to riding, and did my first four bike tours this year, the biggest one being 69 miles. It's a great challenge! My goal is to a full century ride next year.

I'ts great to be here!

Hi folks. I'm Rex, and I've been riding for about a year and a half, since I had a heart attack in March, 2007. The rehabilitation was primarily tread mill and stationary bike. My wife picked up a $20 garage sale mountain bike for me to get a change of scenery. I put 1500 miles on that bike last year and had plans for more this year, but 12 hour work days 6 days a week kind of killed the plan. I was able to get out and ride on the off day for most of the Summer, and I did upgrade to a new road bike over Labor Day. I had about 600 miles on the old bike and in the few days that I've been able to ride since I acquired the new bike, I've put about 150 miles on it, including my second annual 50 mile ride. Since I haven't been able to get out and ride, I've been riding the stationary bike 30 minutes in the morning and can normally get about 7.5 miles in on that.

Hi my name is Rachel I am new to SP and i love to ride my bike. I haven't been doing it very long but my dad rides about a 100 miles at a time he is my motivation. He is 50 and he has always been in better shape then me even when I was in the military. So i decided to join this team to keep me motivated to continue riding so one day i can keep up with my dad!

Good evening everyone. I thought that I had introduced myself already, but I guess I was on another thread.

Karlyn was nice enough to invite me. My name is Celeste, and I live in the South Okanagan Valley in British Columbia Canada. Not sure, if I am the only Canadian.

I got a knee brace to help stabilize my knee so that I can do some more biking. Recumbant, street bike, and bicycling in the water (both the lake and pool).

Such an active and supportive group. It's great.

My partner and I are waiting on our first little grand child. Which should be born any day now. I will keep you posted.

xoxo C

Spend some special time with loved ones. You are my SparkJourney Gems and I am right beside you. xoxo C

my Cannondale is really a street bike. More upright. Springs and a shock on the seat. Has 24 gears. It is so much better than my mountain bike. It also has 700c tires that are really nice on the street and side walk.

One think I didn't mention -- my commute to work is about 3/4 of mile down one street to a sidewalk along the river. I take that the rest of way about 3.25 miles to the capitol where I work. The lower side walk by the river is pretty much foot traffic. The upper side walk by the street is foot traffic and bikes as well.

There is an Cannondale Adventure 5 it cost a little more than mine but I liked the gears on the Adventure 4 better. I've been very happy with it. Today is the first day I rode in the car in 5 weeks. We're taking our bikes in for a tune up at lunch.

I passed my mountain bike to my 22 year old nephew to use. If I get in shape enough to mountain bike next year or so I might buy a bike just for that.

I'm ending 2014 better than I started it.
Randy

Hello Two Wheels team members,

My name is Randy. I've been active with Sparkpeople since the end of Sept/07. I've lost about 60-62 pounds so far.

I attend TOPS meetings on Thursday and that's the weight that I record on SP weekly.

I started bike commuting about the first week of June. I commute 8 miles round trip 5 days a week. On weekends I ride around 15-20 miles a day. I now have a Cannondale Adventure 4 and love it. The first week of commuting I was using a cheaper mountain bike. The more appropriate commuter type bike as made a world of difference.

I walk 30 minutes at day at lunch.

My goal from today until the end of June is to lose 6#

I've looked over the team and really believe it will be a very positive team to help me along my journey.

Have a great weekend everyone. And thanks for creating a great team!

I'm ending 2014 better than I started it.
Randy

Hey Y'all- nope I'm not really a southerner, I'm a transplant from Connecticut but I do love it down here in South Carolina where I live with my husband of 17 years and my 3 kids.
Been riding with my husband for years and finally branched out and got my own March 2007, a Dyna Wide Glide (which is now my husband's and I now have a lovely Fat Boy that I'm totally enraptured with and spend alot of time on!!)
I got my liscence in March of this past year and am so glad that is done and over with!
Have known Karlyn for a while now as we've chatted here and there about the bikes and diet and fitness so I think this will be a great group! Looking forward to meeting others who love to ride!
