Jasminerose, Considering how we cook similar, I suggest you check out my cook book for modified low fat recipes on spark!
Just a couple of quick tips - add tofu when blending coconut for masala to cut down on fat and addition of protein.
When you have to fry onions, use only a tbsp or 1/2 and fry as much chopped onion that would brown ( about 1/2 cup or so). Add the rest and then, just cook till transparent.
Use a non-stick pot or pan for cooking.
I just googled out of curiosity and was amazed to find so so so so many Kerala food blogspots!!! Good Luck finding one that you like:)

I am also a Malayalee and from Kerala. I am hoping someone can share some healthy version of recipes of traditional kerala food.

Hey my dear friend, Lisa:) Welcome! Not a Malayalee here but, generally speaking, you will do fine to impress your MIL just the way you are, easy going, compatible and fun! It all depends upon how your in laws are - if they are easy going too? Same with you MIL - if she wants to be a boss in the kichen or would rather be served!
We make Appam also. its really easy to prepare whether you like sweeter one with banana added or savory type. I am sure one of the keralites here will be happy to provide you with the recipe.

Hello all,
I am new to this team, and engaged to a Malayalee, from vaikam (near Cochin, in kerala). His name is Santosh, and he is a member on SP too (THESANMAN).
I will be meeting his parents for the first time in a couple of weeks, and am hoping to bond with his mother in the kitchen! I love preparing Indian dishes for Santosh and the rest of our family, but am hoping to learn more about traditional South Indian cooking, specifically.
He is always talking about appam (sp?), a traditional snack of fried banana batter. I'd love any tips/recipes for this one.
Also, any tips for a future daughter-in-law who is about to meet her fiance's very traditional catholic-malayalee parents are welcome. (yes, I'm nervous!)
Thanks Lisa in California

Malbar region is famous for their fish recipes. I have also heard and tasted their recipe where they add vinegar to cooking which we don't except in western recipes! I would be willing to try any recipe (except simple veggie recipes like sautee's and those with loads of blended coconut, that we too make in Mangalore where I grew up) that you can post here or at sparkrecipes. I would love fish recipes since I was a Lacto-Ova-vegetarian until recently,to learn variety of cooking Indian style.
I would also suggest that spark needs a few more ethnic recipes they claim that are simple to use. The only recipes that catch their attention are the ones that have a few ratings on them already. Based on that to have a few successful Indian recipes out there, we should follow the system used by our predecessor who requested people to rate his recipes. We would do the same just to gain recognition of some more Indian recipes.

How about sharing some of your tasty recipes with us guys? Yaay! We want to know how to cook Malabari style......
We have a few chains of restaurants owned by Keralites called Coramandel in CT. Some good Kerala cooking but, mostly they like to follow the crowd with North Indian style cooking which is quite heavy when eaten in restaurants and greasy, unfortunately !
