Hi MaryAlice,

I haven't checked in with this team in a while and just happened upon your post today. Grandmas are TOTALLY welcome!!!

Good luck with Beka!! We took in a cousin once when she was 8. Her mom's way of living was night and day different from ours. She had never set foot in school, her mom had different boyfriends in and out of the house, they all partied (alcohol and drugs). It was NOT a good situation. We had a lot of headaches with her during the year she lived with us. I am 10 years older. Mom would help her with English homework and I would help her with Math. We had to tag team her because she could be so mean and stubborn. You'll definitely need to pick your battles.

As far as hydration.....I'm a huge fan of Mio (and Wal-Mart's generic version). It's a calorie-free flavor that you can add to water. I also like crystal light. I drink a lot of iced tea sweetened with splenda and lemonade. All of those count as water and will help hydrate her. Maybe she can pick a few flavors she likes and go from there.

For the kids, I also buy Kool-Aid and have a gallon pitcher --- 2 packets per gallon. They enjoy making their own flavors, often mixing them. When I let them make their own, they're more likely to drink it.

I'm not sure why I'm writing this cause no one will see it, but my feeling are hurt. I joined this team a week ago. I introduced myself then. I didn't get the first welcome. I saw today that several people joined today and had been welcomed. the only conclusion I can come to is I'm not welcome.

My name is MaryAlice. I just got custody of my 11 year old grand daughter, and have a problem. Beka's teacher called that Beka got faint during PE and the school nurse couldn't get her pulse down. Yesterday Beka had a physical, urine test, EKG, chest xray and today she has blood test. So far the worse they have found is dehydration.

The Dr says for her to drink a 20 oz bottle of Gateraide G2 not regular Gateraide and 2 20 oz bottles of water a day. Beka hit the roof, NO WAY mom let her drink Dr Pepper and she didn't like water or gateraide. Any ideas?
