Hi everyone I hope that at least some of you are still active in this group, I noticed a lot of the post are very old. Anyhow this is me.....My name is Brenda, I am 27, and a senior in college. I will be finished by next year with school and plan on joining then, but I have to get my weight down to the proper amount. I know I can do it especially now that I have a goal. I am planning on joining the Navy and I would love to hear tips, tricks, and other peoples thoughts/feelings. :-) Please email me, add me as a friend, or reply here!

Hello,

I aim to join the Air Force to become a cryptologic linguist in July, but I need to go from 250 to 185. Just hoping to find like-minded people to journey with. I'd love to make some awesome friends form here!

Hello everyone,

My name is Pippin and I'm 21 years old. I'm getting in shape and losing the pounds to join the army on an option 40 contract (rangers).
At this point my goal is to lose weight and gain strength to the point where I meet the PFT requirements for after basic, so I can spend my time at basic focusing on really pushing myself to the limit and getting ready for the 75th.
Also, still waiting on my permanent resident card. (dutch man married to an american woman)
I've still got a looooong way to go.

Hi Team :)

My name is Michelle and I am 33 years old. I am a Navy veteran and I am planning to join the Navy Reserves early this fall (September). I have already lost over 30 pounds and I have about 18 more to lose.

I have always been curvy/overweight since getting out in 2004 and so this a great way for me to get back in shape and conquer any bad habits.

I was lucky enough to meet an ex-Navy guy who does the special warfare/Seal training 3 days a week so since last fall I have been running 5-6 miles a week and doing intense gym workouts.

I just finished a 5.5 mile power walk for the Wounded Warrior Project charity this past Saturday and it was nice to know I could and did do it all because of my training.

Good luck to everyone in their military goals and endeavors!

Hello there everyone.

At first I was looking to lose weight for law enforcement (which I kind of still am), but now I am looking into joining the Army. I need to lose about 100lbs and improve myself physically just to get into basic, then I can use basic to "lose more weight" like everyone else says. I am starting out slow since I'm going from couch potato to possible exercise fanatic. I am hoping though that with the reduction of weight will help on endurance and maybe pull off perfect scores across the board in the PT test. Wish me luck.

I want to be a military nurse.

I graduated with my RN this summer and am currently getting my BSN (a requirement to get in as an officer).

I started off unable to run 10 feet but now I can jog a mile (in 24 minutes; honestly I could probably walk faster). Situps are a problem, I've had 4 kids and my stomach is so stretched from the c-sections that I am pretty sure I'll never wear a 2 piece bathing suit but at my age I probably shouldn't be considering that anyway, haha. Pushups is tough, but I'm sure that will come with time as the weight comes off.

Anyway, I am looking forward to meeting some new people that will help me achieve my goals.

Talk soon.

Hi everyone! :)

I'm Sherri. I'm trying to lose weight and get fit to go into the Air Force as a commissioned officer/Air Force Nurse.

Although I am already a nurse, the AF requires a bachelor's degree. I will have it in three weeks. When I talked with a recruiter a year ago, he said "Get the degree and get in!" I hurried to finish my degree. Two weeks ago, I called the recruiter to let him know I was almost done. There's a new recruiter now and he says "You're too fat. Call me when you lose the weight." So I now have another goal - drop the pounds! I wish they would have told me this a year ago!

I was devastated when I realized I was so out of shape. I couldn't do a push up. Even a girlie push up. Sit ups? Nope. Run a mile and a half in 15 minutes? It took me almost 25 minutes to walk a mile!

I have removed sodas from my diet. I'm following the SP calorie recommendations. I work out almost every day. I can now do 10 girlie push-ups! I can walk a mile in under twenty now. I do cardio or strength training every day. Sometimes I need motivation. Hope to find it here!

I've gone from 184 to 179 in two weeks. The recruiter said to call him back when I am 175. Forget that. I'll call him when I'm 165.

Hey everyone - I'm Kate, 26 and trying to make weight for Army Reserve. I weighed in at 219 and need to get back to college weight of 165, so now I get to run my happy self to death. :) My husband is also looking to go Reserve, but he has an outside job and gets to lose weight while he works. Hello Everyone,
My name is Rochelle. I need to lose roughly 100 lbs to be eligible to join. The military was probably my top career choice when I was in high school but I abandoned it because of my weight and my belief that that was just how it was going to be for me. I tried school and unfortunately it took me a long time to realize that aimlessly going to school was going to get me nowhere in life. So now the military is my top option again, only this time I'm working as hard as I can to fix the weight problem instead of letting it discourage me. I need this to work.

So, I head to basic in June. I am in pretty good shape but want to get about 15lbs off before I head out. I need to work on my endurance a tad and confidence in my running (I give up easily)

Hey there!

I'm Kelci and i'm a freshman in college who has lately been thinking about how a degree really isn't going to guarantee me anything. My dad is AF and one of my favorite teachers was in the Navy for quite a while, and she's inspired me to follow my heart. Right now, my heart is leaning heavily on the Navy, and the only thing standing between us is my weight.
BMI-wise I'm teetering on the edge of acceptable for women my age, so I am going to work to get way under that, and hopefully at the weight I need to not be taped during MEPs.
Good luck to you all as well! :)

Hey everyone, I joined the Navy in November and I ship out for basic training May 24th. I will be trained as an active duty Corpsman. As of right now I cannot do a single push up, swim or run. I have a lot to work on but I am working on it all with the help of my fiancé who is currently an Army Reservist.

Hello folks,
My name is Bo and I'm looking at going into the Navy if I can lose the weight. When I was a teenager I had been planning on going in and had gone so far as to get a 99th percentile on my ASVAB and a 138 on my DLAB, got all my checkups done and top security clearance (I was looking at CTI or officer)... Unfortunately, I knew I was gay and the idea of spending heaven knew how long living a lie just... ate me up inside. I withdrew before actually going in and told myself if the day ever came that DADT was repealed, I would do what I could to get ready and join up.
Well, we all know what time it is, right? Now, here I am 7 years since then and overweight... but I have the drive and I figure between the message boards and keeping a blog of my experiences, I have a pretty good shot of hitting my goal by my birthday (in July). Heck, I've dropped 13lbs in 14 days out of the 100 or so I need... here's to the long road ahead!

Hello, my name is Rachel. I was in the Army and got out this June, so I can go to school. My goal is to lose all the extra weight I gained after having one child and constant lifestyle change, so I can be in shape enough to reenlist as an officer in the active duty Army.

Hello All!!....I was looking at all the posts and found my own about wanting to get in to shape for basic training. I remember how I felt before I went and how nervous I was and it was aweful. The best decision I made... was to get in to shape. Now I am back on sp to get in to better shape. I have my pt test next month and im kind of nervous...the new standards make it roughly a 50% pass rate...so time to get busy! If anybody wants any info or advice on the Air Force just let me know!

Hi, I'm Stacey. I'm a prior service (MI) Army soldier. I have been out of the Army for a while now in which time I had 2 kids and packed on the pounds like they were going out of style. I have dreamt of re-enlisting for a couple of years now but that was just it. I dreamt. I didn't do anything to get closer to my goal. But now I am refocused and ready to drop this weight. If all goes as planned, I will be seeing the recruiter next Christmas. (2011)

Hi everyone! I am Brandy and I am 26 years old, married and a mom. I have been fighting with my weight for several years now. I am considering joining the National Guard when I move back home to New Orleans near the end of this year. So I am working on getting healthy and fit and ready for basic. I am so ready for this change!

Hi MYPODUNK and Brett...Welcome!

I was in the AF for 18 yrs and was 'put out' for my weight. I only have 2 yrs left to get my retirement so I'm working to get back in and get my 20 yrs in.

I have found that if you don't focus on past failures and only on TODAY you can do it!! I've been doing the Spark "diet" for 3 weeks and that seems to be the key for me. Stay focused on the present...NOT the past and you will do well

Hi everyone... I'm wanting to join the Navy, and have taken the first steps to do so. I have a lot of weight to lose, but I'm going to do it. I have a recruiter that is willing to work with me. I'm not sure as to what I want to do in the Navy, but I am taking the ASVAB on the 25th. I am interested in K9, but not sure just yet. So please help me do this, it is for me and my family.

Hey, my name's Rose. After many years of indecision about ... well, everything! I've decided to join the Navy. I'm totally excited about it. I can't join for another year because I was taking depression medication (you have to be off for at least a year, with doctor's approval, which I got!), so that gives me plenty of time to get in shape.

I've been exercising regularly for the past week, three days Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred, and three days either jogging or stair-stepping (not on a stair-stepper, on the stairs in my house! Ha ha!), and now I'm starting to focus on my eating.

Anyway, I want to wish everyone good luck in acheiving your goals! Love!

Hi. My name is Chris. I'm 20 years old as of last Friday. I have been "trying" to lose weight for the better part of 6 years. This past Sunday I decided that I AM going to lose the 90 pounds I need to join the Air Force.

The past 3 days have started with me going to the gym with 2 of my best friends. We do 1 full hour of cardio between 3 exercise machines. So far just the bike, elliptical, and treadmill. We are going to continue this routine for 1 month so that we are used to that. Then we are going to start our strength training and toning...
We all count our calories individually and eat our own meals throughout the day. So far, we are going strong and will continue to do so as long as we don't slip up anywhere.

In addition to the new daily routine, I am starting my own exercises at home. I took another friend's recommendation and am doing push-ups/sit-ups between TV commercials. In addition, and this may seem a bit weird for a guy... I am starting the "Special K challenge" by myself...

Any recommendations will be gladly accepted.

So, if you've read this far, thank you for caring, and sorry for the long post... :)

OH! Forgot to mention, I did AFJROTC throughout high school, in case you noticed my avatar...

I my name is Ashley and I am needing to lose 40 pounds to meet the weight requirements. I have reached a dead end in both my college and my job. I have always wanted to join the military, so I took m the test and passed it. This was after 9/11, and my mom begged me not to go that she was afraid to lose me. My mom passed away almost 2 years ago and I still have the desire to join. I was in shape before my mom passed, but the 40 pounds were packed on as I was upset and depressed after her death. I think My mom would be proud of my for taking control of my career and doing something worthwhile to serve my country.

I meet with the army recruiter yesterday for the first time she was really nice about telling me my weight was the only issue and asked if I would like to get it off so I could join, I sd yes, she sd meet me at 6am ( if you know me this was not an easy thing to do because I like to sleep until the last possible moment) anyway I got up @ 5:30 am meet the recruiter did my stretching and work out and was back home by 7:15... I feel really good.. I felt like have accomplished something today.... I know that seems silly but I am very proud of myself. I still have a long way to go but this morning was a good start.

Hello! I'm new on this Spark People thing too. I am trying to lose weight because I want to go into the Air Force as on officer. I just graduated with my bachelor's degree in the spring and am hoping to further my educational goals and life goals with the Air Force. The only thing stopping me is my weight! It gets pretty frustrating sometimes. Especially because right now I'm at a dead end job that I hate and I think to myself the faster I lose the weight the quicker I can join!! I count calories and work out at the gym 5 days a week. I do weight lifting 3 days a week and cardio every day of the 5 days. Sometimes I run 2.5 miles on the tredmill or I do kickboxing or zumba class. Is there anything else I can do to speed up this process? I am willing to try anything to reach my goals. Are there any supplements I can take to speed it up? If anyone has any advice please let me know! I only have about 13-15 lbs to go.

Hi, my name is Ceirra, and I currently have to lose around 20 pounds before I can think about enlisting in the army, along with being off my antidepressants for a year. I have hit the six month mark, and have started really working out.

Hey everyone, my name is Mario, and I'm currently using Sparkpeople to lose about 70 pounds for the Air Force. At the very least, I want to get my BMI out of the Obese rating. It is currently at 33. I am working on my Bachelor's degree in Computer Network Management, and I want to obtain an officer's commission so that I can become a pilot. I'm so very thankful for SparkPeople, and for my mother, who bought me a year membership to a local gym for my birthday in March. Hope everyone is having a good week!

Hello,

I just joined the group today but wanted to introduce myself. I'm currently working on getting into shape and meeting the weight requirements for the Navy. I've got about 30-40lbs to go and am devoted to getting there. Look forward to working with you all on our goals.

Hello, I'm a Marine Corp veteran. Served 4 years active duty. I've been out almost 10 years. I'm almost 33 and finally working on a Masters of Divinity. I'm working with my church and recruiter to go into the Navy as a Chaplain. I have to lose 80 lbs. I'm brand new to Spark...but it seems to be an awesome place. I look forward to getting to know as many of you as I can. I appreciate any encouragement on this journey and I'm willing to offer encouragement as well.

Blessings,
Daniel

Hi everyone! I'm Kate and I'm losing weight so I can become a United States Marine. I have to lose about 75 more lbs (down 40lbs already) before I will meet the weight requirement. I'm so incredibly excited and motivated and I wish everyone here much success in their efforts.

Hello everyone! I'm Morgan. I'm 21 years old. I will be enlisting into the Air Force after I graduate with my associate degree in Criminal Justice. I have to lose 30 more pounds before I can reach the requirement weight. I am planning on being in Security Forces.

My father was in the Air Force so I have been in the military environment most of my life, living overseas for a good bit of it. I look forward to speaking to everyone on the team. Good luck everyone!

Hello,
My name is Cassandra and I am losing weight to join the Army. I figure I have to lose about 100LBS before I go see a recruiter. I have taken the ASVAB test before and did well but couldn't make the weight requirement, that was about 10 years ago. I am a little anxious about whether or not I will qualify because I have a metal plate in my leg, I am hoping this will not be too much of a problem, if I have to get it removed I will. My dad was in the Army and he retired quite a while ago so I grew up in a military environment so I believe the Army will be perfect for me, I am trying to find my place in the world and I believe this is the way to do it.

Well, I am glad to see that there are more people thinking of joining the military. I am also in the military. I've been in the AF for 6 and a half years. I had my son almost three years ago and struggled to get back into shape. Now, I'm there. I have another PT test Thursday so we'll see what happenes. I wish all of you the best of luck. If you have any questions about the AF just ask. Speak to you all soon!! emoticon

Hello, My husbdand is currently serving full time wtih the Indiana National Guard. I a officer recruiting weekend I attened with him I was recruited as a Military Chaplain. I am very excited and look forward to the oppertunity but i am over their weight recuirements so I am buckling down for the long haul and hope I can lose enough before all my paperwork gets done and i am redy to be commisioned. It is a little scary.

and in reply to the last post. Yes a relationship can last through your basic training, ours did. Just let him know everything to expect up front and then tell him to expect the unexpected the military is unpredictable. You will go a period of time without being able to call home but you can do it and thanks for being willing to serve this great cuntry!!

Okay, I'm considering the army and I am freaking out. I'm going through the recruitment process but now I'm freaking out I won't make it through boot camp and training. I know that I have time to get into shape but I am really afraid of being unable to contact my loved ones for so long. Have any of you gone through it? Any advice? Is it as awful as I'm making it out to be? Can a relationship last through it?

Hello Everybody! My name is Sarah. I'm 24, living in Eastern NC. I have a long story, but I'll shorten it here. I graduated HS In 2002, 5 days later I went to Parris Island. I was there for 45 days then I got sent home. I was misdiagnosed by a Corpsman and an outside Neurologist in having Vertigo (it was just an inner ear infection, not real sure how they missed that, but they did). So since then I have been up and down with my weight and it is time to buckle down, find some discipline and get back there! My goal is to hopefully be back down there at boot camp by May of next year. That's about all for now.

-Sarah

So ... I'm not losing weight to join the military, I'm losing weight while in the military. I've been in over 22 years and ultimately want to get back to my enlistment weight of 140 pounds ... which means I have about 40 pounds to go.

Hi! I'm Jason. I've been in the Air Force for 17 years. I weighed 130 when I joined at 18 years old. Now I'm 35 and weigh 214. I'm in a cycle of failing my PT test, working my butt off to pass it, then falling right back into bad habits. My wife and I are doing this together. If anyone needs some info or insight about military life, feel free to ask!

I am a nursing student and i will be trained to become a military nurse. I'm happy to be here and ready to acheive my goals. This is something that i really want and i'm not going to give up that easy.

Alan's the name. I grew up an Army brat and am now considering joining either the Army or Navy as a Diver. Navy requirements say i gotta be 211 or lower for my hight.

If anyone here knows anything about being a Diver in the military, your advice and suggestions would be more than welcome.

Hi Everyone,

I'm Rachel and I'm thinking of joining the Marine Corps. If I decide to join, I'd be heading off to Officer Candidate School in June and I have to lose about 40 pounds before I can be considered light enough. Also, I'd have to get my 3 mile time down from 36 minutes to about 22 minutes to make sure that I'm competitive with all the other candidates.

Hi all,
My name is Michael. I was a medic in the Army in the late 80's and am now currently an RN. I am 40 y/o. I got out of the army because I was young and married, had a young son and my wife (at the time) wanted no part of stayin in. I have regreted getting out ever since. Now that I'm divorced hind sitght is 20/20.

Well I'm about 130 overweight per the charts but know I can tape in at about 200 so that's about 85lbs. I am remarried and my kids are older. I would like to go active duty and think my wife would support it, but am going to go into the reserve as a nurse.

welcome Lesley. I am 42 and relying on my prior service time to get back in to the Army, so I am probably a little biased on whether one should join military.

But, I would say do the work (weight loss/physical training) to get ready and see if you are ready once you hit your goals. Either way it wont be a waste.

Hello everyone!

My name is Lesley. I've done sparkpeople before and lost 15 lbs but then I got pregnant and gained it all back & then some. My baby girl is 7 months old. I'm 26 and thinking about joining the Indiana National Guard, but I need to lose 40 lbs first. I'm a little torn about joining though because a lot of Indiana Guardsmen are being sent to Iraq. I haven't talked to a recruiter yet since I have to lose a chunk of weight anyway. I'm not sure I'm ready to leave my husband and daughter for a year. I'd love to hear from current military people and how it effects your families.

Good Morning everyone.

I am probably not the typical person on this team. I am wanting to go back to the Army. I was in for 4 years active (13F-Fire Support Specialist) and then 4 years National Guard. But I have been out for a while.

I am now an attorney and wanting to go back into the Army JAG. It is a long shot, but I have been working hard for 6 months to lose weight and get back in shape so I can at least feel comfortable trying.

I am 42 (yes that is technically too old, but have been assured that my prior service reduces my age in the eyes of the Army). Right now if push came to shove I think I could pass the PT test, wouldn't be a great score, but I could score 60 in each event.

I am just working to get the weight down. I may always be above the standards as far as pounds, but I want to be able to get pass the tape test without any problems.

So good luck to all of you trying to get in and good luck to all of you already in.

Hi to everyone! Let me just start off by saying congrats on wanting to join the military! I have been in the AF for just over 6 years. I need to get back in shape, even though I feel like I never really was in shape. Anyway, I came into the AF weighing 137 and at my heaviest I was 150. yuck! Anyway, I am not a thin person and never have been, but I just want to get back into the 130s. I have about 4 more pounds until I DO get back into the 130s but obviously the lower the number the better. I wish you all the best of luck and keep your heads up!! emoticon

Hi there. I just wanted to introduce myself and give a bit of background.
My name is Arlen and I'm a 25 year old Scotsman who has just moved to America to live with my American wife. (It's only taken us four years!)
I plan to sign up in about 1 1/2 years after I have finished some abdominal surgeries I need to have and when I graduate basic I want to do it at the highest possible level, so I figured why not start training now!?

I'm 5'4" (A short guy, I know) and at the moment I weight 169 lbs.
My goal weight is 140 lbs with muscle and I am getting there bit by bit.
Hopefully this spark team will help me get where I need to be so that I can give something back to the country which gave me my wonderful wife.

I just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I joined this team for a slightly different reason then trying to join the military. I have been in the Air Force for 14 years. I am trying to stay motivated to loose the weight that I need so that I can continue in the Air Force.

When I joined a weighed about 120 pounds. In the last 14 years my weight has gone up and down from anywhere from 133 pounds all the way up to 205.

I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Hey I'm new here. I just graduated from law school and am going into the Air Force JAG Corps in January. I am within the weight range but really out of shape so I'm working with a trainer to get ready for officer training in January.

Hello-
I've got 120 to lose before enlisting in the Navy but I know I can do it! I have to remind myself every day but the desire is there.
Haven't decided if I'll go active duty or reserve yet- will probably depend on if I get pregnant in the time being or not.

Hello to everyone and good luck!

My name is Lauren and I have 17.2 lbs to lose before enlisting in the North Dakota Air National Guard.

I initially wanted to join the Navy about 4 years ago, but decided that A) I wanted to stay inland here in North Dakota (or somewhere close), B) I really wanted to join the Military because of my love affair with Planes and B) HOLY CRAP I HATE WATER! (I have an irrational fear of deep water...) So after really thinking about it, it was pretty obvious that the Air Force was a better option.

I went back to school and was REALLY active in the AFROTC program, but had to drop because I couldn't afford to go to school full-time anymore and weighed too much to be on scholarship.

17.2 lbs to go!

I have at least 60 lbs to lose and i know the requirements for the PT test so I am a step a head so thats good!

Good luck to everyone who is trying to lose weight to join the military!

Hi all,

My name's Teri (soon to be known only as Eicher) and I've lost about 40 lbs to be able to join the AF Nat Guard. I have sworn my oath and I will be shipping out OCT 7 of this year to Lackland for basic, then in Tech from 12/3/08 to 3/18/09 for Readiness in Missouri. I've been working at it for about 4 years, so it's so exciting to finally see it happening! I'm trying to lose 1 more pound per week up until I leave, but I'm really focusing on building upper body strength. I don't think I'll have a problem meeting minimum req's, but I am shooting for the Thunderbolt award, which is a physical fitness award and grants you an extra day off base at graduation with your family. So, I will need to run the 1.5 in 11:33, do 37 pushups in 2 minutes, 60 situps in 2 minutes, and 2 pullups. Coming from taking over 18 minutes to run (run, ha!) 1.5 miles to doing 1.5 minute quarter-mile sprints, I really feel confident I will be able to!

I realize I'm nearing the end of the journey a lot of you are starting out on, but I'd still like to hang until I go, and if I can offer any advice/support, please let me know!

T

My greatest fear is that I'll look back on my life and wonder what I did with it.

Hi all! My name is Jennifer. I'm 29 years old and I'm hoping to join the Navy. I'd like to leave for basic in March or April of 2009. I have about 65 pounds to lose before the recruiters will start processing me. My eventual career goal is to finish my BSN, right now I'm in a holding pattern and I can't afford school. I have a cousin who has been in the Navy for 7 years and he loves it, so I'm really excited!

Hi all. Was active USAF for 6 years (86-92, avionics tech), and now wish to go back in, this time into the Reserves.

I am an RN and work currently as a House Supervisor in a rural hospital. My background is ER.

I have a LOT of weight to lose, but I'm going to do it.

Glad to see there are others here with the same goal.

Hi! My name is Laura, I'm 25 and I'm joining the Navy in January! I've got quite a bit of weight to lose but I know I can do it. Not only do I need to lose weight but I also need to get in shape for basic training so the next 6 months are going to be pretty strenuous. Hope to hear from you guys!
