My name is Lorie, I love watching birds, we have lots of chickadees, humming birds, eagles, finches, orioles, woodpeckers, nuthatches and more. We have done bird rescue many times. Even when we were visiting in a place in Florida, my daughter and myself rescued a large white duck from becoming alligator bait. it had a fishing line wrapped tightly around its leg so it could not fly and the line had a hook in it and the hook had caught a garbage bag and so the poor duck with badly swollen leg was not moving very well. But we saved it, and with a quack of thanks it left with it's friends.

We get a Falcon that visits our yard now and then. We also have Red Railed Hawks in our area, and sometimes Turkey Vultures.

I never pay attention to the "small" or songbirds that migrate in the fall. I usually just notice the Canada Geese in the fall. It is the springtime when I see the small or songbirds.

Good luck!

Slow moving cold front is headed toward the Gulf Coast. I am hoping that it is filled with Warblers and other neo-tropic migrants for an exciting weekend looking at birds.

I haven't been back to Oak Openings since this Spring. I would love to go again. I don't get there that often, obviously. This weekend I am going to Castalia, OH to an animal rehab center called Back to the Wild. I emailed the founder about becoming a volunteer, so she asked to meet with me this Sat. Sounds like a great place to go.

Hi! I often go birding at Oak Openings in the spring. I love the Lark Sparrows, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Summer Tanagers and Blue Grosbeak. It is a great park in Toledo, OH.

Check out the new thread on making a backyard habitat. There may be some info on the websites posted or just look up "rain garden" on the internet. Please post those questions/answers/websites you find on that thread so we can see them rather than the introduction forum. Thanks!

Welcome. I enjoyed your pictures especially the cedar wax wing. I haven't seen any yet this year. If you want better birds in your yard your best bet is to create a wildlife habitat for them. My house had a scrawney oak 20 years ago but it has grown and I have planted understory trees, deciduous and evergreen bushes for the birds to take refuge in. I've also included many native woody plants and flowers along with a rain garden. The birds are really enjoying the raingarden for mud and scraps for their nests.

Hi Trayce! Welcome to the team. I live in Toledo and I love birds of prey also. Right now I am working as a volunteer researcher for the Oak Openings area (here in Toledo) on a Breeding Raptor Research program. What I do is I am assigned to a certain area (local park) to look for signs of raptors (birds of prey) in that area and make any notes of what I find and submit the info the park. I have been watching a Cooper's Hawk nest, but couldn't find it the last time I was out. It has been raining so much that it had been a while since I was last out and the trees popped there leaves and I was having a hard time finding it. Also there is a a Barred Owl's nest that I heard has juveniles, but I haven't seen them yet. I need to go back to look again, maybe tomorrow. Now I am also volunteering as a butterfly monitor - basically the same kind of research for the area. It is a lot of fun and also relaxing.

What I would love to do someday is become a falconer in the State of Ohio. It takes a lot of money and especially time, which neither I have at this point. I did join the Ohio Falconry Assc, but dropped it for now. I met local guy that is a master falconer and went to see his Red Tail, her picture is on my page. She has since died and he got a new one.

So right now I am considering going back to school and studying Enviromental Science so I can be a wildlife biologist.

I will have to check out your pictures later.

Kim

My name is Tracye,
I love watching and taking photos of birds.
My favorite are birds of prey.
I live in Cincinnati, Ohio I have been trying to entice birds to my yard with feeders and fruit. Mostly I get sparrows, doves and starlings. But sometimes I get lucky. Two days ago I saw four cedar waxwings in my mullberry tree. I didnt know what they were and had to look it up.
My husband and I go canoeing a lot mostly on Whitewater River. There we see Hawks, Osprey and my favorite, The Bald Eagle. I'm including links to some of my photos if your interested.
Glad I found this team, looks like fun. www.flickr.com/photos/62191883@N07/5762767
