Hi, everybody, I'm new to spark people but not to Pilates. It's my favourite exercise, better than yoga:) I've been doing both Yoga and Pilates on and off for a decade now (join a class, then slip...). I'm hoping to make Pilates a regular routine at least 3 times a week at home.
Wish me luck and determination!

Carla, we would not want to mislead you. I think you should consult your physician as to limiting your exercises to accommodate the fusion. If your physician does not think you need to do any limitations then continue to work with your teacher do independent Pilates through DVDs and YouTube to strengthen your muscles.

Keep us up to date as to how things are working for your.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the team but not to SP. I started Pilates in September 2012 but had to stop temperarily due to a whiplash (car accident) in Decemer. Restarted in March and I'm feeling a bit stronger already.
I have a question though. When I was pregnant with my first daughter I found out my sacrum is fused with my last vertebra but I never paid much attention to it.
Last week the Pilates teacher mentioned it affected the degree of motion in my lower back. I'm just not sure if I need to adjust any exercise if I do Pilates at home with a DVD. I've looked on the internet but haven't found much.

Thanks !
Carla

WooHoo! Those roll ups are tough. I was doing well and able to get through 6 at a time, but now that I have not been into a routine I'm lucking if I can get 1-2 accomplished. You are doing great!

Umpteen years ago I did Pilates at the physio using a mat & reformer. I was fortunate then to have individual attention. Now, I'm returning to the exercises at home, remembering how good they were for core strength.

I am starting out with Pilates at home using the SP videos. In just over 3 weeks, I think I have mastered the 100s with good form. But I can still only do 2 of the 4 roll ups in the video - I'm still pretty chuffed with that though. And, I look forward to doing more.

Hi! I've been a member of the team for a few months, but haven't taken the time to introduce myself yet. I'm 29 years old and a certified Pilates instructor. I started Pilates in college to supplement my dancing as I am very accident prone and suffered from numerous injuries. Pilates helped me strengthen enough to lessen the amount and frequency of my injuries. One of my professors in college was a certifying instructor for the Kane School of Core Integration, based in New York and offered a certifying weekend at our college. I jumped at the chance to get certified. I began teaching a regular class in my current town over 4 years ago, and I have students that have stuck with me over all that time. I have recently expanded my offerings to a near by town and currently teach 8 classes per week. I am excited to meet the members of this team who love Pilates as much as I do.

Hello All-
I am trying to find ways to keep exercise in my life after having multiple foot injuries that will leave me in a compromised position for 8 weeks. My prior exercise routine consisted of quad skating 3-4x per week with pilates 1-2x as well. I have always loved pilates, and hope that it can transition into a main form of exercise until I'm back on my feet 100% again.

Hello, I'm back to Sparkpeople after dealing with some major life changes over the last year or so. I did my first Pilates class today since moving, and I loved the routine all over again. My instructor had us use a big roller, a first for me, to do some self-massage, then put us through a kick ass session pinpointing thighs and back. It was great, and I even got some one-on-one time afterward to assess the damage to my shoulder and pelvis from a horse riding accident 3 years ago. I've been doing yoga for quite awhile, am glad to've gotten to the point that I can safely add Pilates, too. At age 67, I don't want to overdo anything, so yoga, walking, and Pilates seem to be the best exercise for me at this time.

Hi! I am Katy, and just stumbled across this team while searching the SparkPeople site for pilates workouts. I used to do pilates on a regular basis when I was in grad school, but now that I am in the real world and a new(ish) mom of a toddler, I want to attempt to get back into it again. Realistically, I will probably only be able to do pilates 1 day/week when hubby is around to watch our son, but I would love to be able to make it more of a habit than that.

Looking forward to learning from and sharing with this community.

Hello! I am a longtime Pilates fan, although sometimes I gravitate more towards yoga, but I want to be more consistent with Pilates, which in the past has helped me a great deal.

I am also a longtime Callanetics fan, although I modify that to suit my own preference and my use of this old exercise mode often resembles Pilates. To me it is somewhat similiar to Pilates in what it does for my body and it is also related to yoga.

Happened on this team while searching for Callanetics.

Hi, I'm happy to have found this group! I started Pilates 6 weeks ago and it's just what my body needs. I've already gotten rid of my lower back pain and feel taller.

I like Pilates the most because there are so many built-in goals. You can feel yourself making progress with every workout, at least in one exercise. I have a long way to go...I can't even do a roll-up yet. If you hear some hysterical happy screaming, it was me doing my first roll-up, LOL.

Looking forward to being part of the group! Keep up the great work!

Hi All! I am a returning Pilates fan. I have been signed up on SP for years but only recently got serious. I'm finding the Nutrition Tracker a revelation -- when I eat the right foods, I can eat SO MUCH FOOD!!!

Anyway ... back to Pilates. I took classes and sessions for several years back about 5 years ago. My elderly Mom was living at home with us then, although she suffered from dementia. She came to class with me sometimes, and my studio was terrific all around! Well, over the intervening years, Mom moved into a memory care facility, I gained pounds, and retired from my first career (in info tech), and let my life get too unstructured for my own good!

I would like to go back to my studio, but like someone else mentioned, being over 50 and overweight is not always that fun to be, at a Pilates studio! I guess one of my motivations for working out, is to be fit ENOUGH to feel okay returning to the studio mat, emoticon

I also am very spoiled -- we have a small home gym, and I don't have a problem at all getting up and working out, without having to drive anywhere. I just discovered some great YouTube videos on Pilates topics and moves by a West Coast instructor, Alisa Wyatt. (I'm on the East Coast, myself). She has a great Magic Ring workout standing series that I did tonight for the first time. There are also several "why can't I" shorts from this instructor, that I found pretty interesting.

My workouts currently consist of some treadmill jogging, some straight dumbbell strength training, yoga, and now adding back in some Pilates. I get bored easily so I like to mix things up.

I look forward to getting to know you and to sharing the ups and the downs on our various journeys, along with our love of Pilates!

Hi everyone! I just found this team and had to join; I love love love pilates. Which is curious, because I took my first mat pilates class about 6-7 years ago, and upon leaving told my friend, "I will NEVER do pilates again." I hated it! But when my gym started offering reformer classes, I signed up, I'm not sure why. I fell in love with the reformer and small class atmosphere and kept it up for more than a year, until I moved. I've moved twice since then and only just found a good pilates studio. After my first class two weeks ago I was walking on air, I am totally addicted!

Hello fellow Pilateans!
I'm in my fourth week of a group reformer class (3x week) and, like the rest of you, loving Pilates (even though I am the only overweight, over 50--heck, over 25--member of the class with banged up knees!). Still can't do a proper roll-up but I am determined to accomplish it by the end of the intro class.

Looking forward to getting lots of information from this group!

Pilates and Yoga have saved my back. I took pilates at a studio once a week for several years but now do a home mat/ball practice. My reformer is in storage since there's no room at the condo, but we are moving back into our house in about a year and will have room then.

Hello everyone. I'm ready to start using my pilates dvd's collection. I am unsure on how to use them with Turbo Fire and Chalean Extreme. Should I do Pilates everyday no matter what workouts I do? I did 10 Minute Solutions Pilates yesterday and it is a killer workout. Have a great day everyone. I am happy to be apart of the group.

Hi, I'm new to this team and Pilates. I have bought 2 DVDs (Pilates for Dummies and the 10 minute Solution) I have not done either of them yet, My physio said it would help fix my sciatica and my degenerated hip ligaments.
I would love to see some progress photos if any members have them , so show what pilates can do for you!
I am not sure if the challenges are still running? I would love to have a buddy to start with. I have 7lb to lose, but really want to tone and strengthen more than anything.

Hi,

I just found this team while looking for some additional information on calorie burn on the reformer. I take reformer classes twice a week, and credit the classes for helping me get back my strength and flexiblity after almost 9 months of inactivity due to injuries in a car accident.

Hello friends,

I am a new lover of Pilates, relatively speaking. I have been practicing Pilates for approx. 6 months. In the beginning, I found it slow and a little boring. I am a cardio blaster, I love to sweat and feel my heart beat and know in the process I am burning lots of calories. However, I decided to stick with it b/c I had heard of the core and overall health benefits of Pilates. One motivating factor was I discovered I suffered a back injury some time ago and that I needed to strengthen my core as much as possible to support my now compromised spine.

I can now say, I am in LOVE with Pilates. I cannot even explain the benefits of practicing this form of exercise. I feel like a completely different person, my muscles and joints feel longer, stronger and leaner than they have in YEARS! I have less back pain than I have had in a long time and I feel wonderful. I still do the cardio sessions to get that calorie burn, but after I long session of cardio, nothing feels better than a Pilates session.

Happy stretching and toning,

Kelly

Good Morning!
I've got about 20 pilates classes under my belt and 2 weeks of SP. And I LOVE both already! emoticon
I'm a single parent and I love knowing that when I carve out time for me- hitting pilates class or checking in on SP- it makes me a better person all around...for a few years I didn't put me on the "to-do" list.
I'm looking forward to being inspired by this team!

Hi everyone. I am new to SP but not quite so new to pilates. I have been practicing on and off for the past 4 years and love the way it makes me feel. Fitness has taken a back seat lately, but I am so ready to get back into a lifestyle that makes me feel amazing. Hope I get to know everyone here better.

Hi everyone!
I'm Val and just started being back on SP again! I tried Pilates many years ago but somehow didn't get into it until a few months ago when I got Ellen Barrett's "Crunch, Pick your spot" pilates DVD. Ever since then my DVD collection is growing and I now mainly do Pilates as well as some yoga (& walking w/Leslie Sansone for my cardio).

I too love how Pilates makes me feel lean and long! emoticon

Hello - I've been a member for 3 months and have already seen some progress - 20 lbs! I've been doing Pilates reformer 2x/wk for over two years but Spark got me adding cardio, which has made a real difference. I am a consultant that travels a lot and works from a home office when I am not on the road.

Hello my name is Jo and I have not done pilates for at least 2 years but I am starting back today. I saw a couple of videos with spark people but I also own the Windsor Pilates series. I plan to join the 2010 challenge if it is not too late.

Hello, my name is Michaela and i am new to the team and to the site!I have started pilates before six months. I wanted to get in shape and i was web searching for different types of exercise routines. I have tried many types of exercises but pilates is the one that i have sticked with. I am not the gym type, i don't like people watching me when i am exercising so i have tried to do it myself with different dvds and web videos. I love the feeling after a good pilates exercise!!

Hi Everyone! I just joined this group. I literally started pilates about two weeks ago. I had gotten a Mari Winsor system about 5 years ago as a gift but never really did much with it. I picked it up to get a little variety into my routine and am now hooked! It has now become my go-to workout. I cannot believe how much an improvement I've seen just in two weeks! For example, I have never ever been able to do sit-ups in my life and now I can do them with not much effort! If I can achieve that, I am very exited to see what else my body is capable of! I can't wait to meet some new people and get some pointers!

Hi everyone,

I started Pilates with a horrible little DVD called "Pilates for Wimps." Too easy, and I am not a wimp! Next I tried "The Method: Pilates Fusion." I like that, especially the balance requirements, but it is not difficult at all. Now I have a 3-DVD set that is tremendous, called "Rael Pilates." Now this one is great! I absolutely love Pilates.

Hey everybody, I am so excited that I just have to share this with people who will understand. I've been taking mat & reformer classes for a year, and have had great results, but there are a few exercises that I still struggle with. Well, this morning in mat class I was actually able to do three of them with good form and really feel what my instructor keeps telling me to feel! Roll Over, Teaser, and Jack Knife all worked today in a way they never have before. It's so great to really see improvement!

Hey everyone!! I'm new to the group. I started doing pilates a couple years ago and was on and off about it. Since I've gotten serious about getting in shape I've been doing pilates at least 2-5 days a week for a couple months now and I feel SO much better! I love anything Ellen Barrett does and of course Mari Winsor.

Hello! I've been practicing pilates for about 4 years. It's a part of my morning wake-up routine - about 20 minutes before breakfast every day.

Hi, I'm Ellie and I am turning 30 next month. I've been sparking for about 2 1/2 months now. I've introduced to pilates probably 5 years ago or more, I've been doing it on and off since, mostly at home with my Winsor Pilates, but I also took a class for a couple of months last year. I've seen some great toning results in the past, and I'm ready to bring pilates back into my workout routine. I'm shooting for twice a week to start and take it from there.

Hi, my name is Tina. I do Yogilates. I hope that counts as being a Pilates Lover, because I also do plenty of yoga. My yoga practice got to the point that it makes me look a lot better than it makes me feel--afterwards. So, I must be a pilates lover at heart.

I had a teacher for hot pilates once, at my gym. She really "spoke to me". My first pilates class, with a therapy-oriented teacher, had me feeling I was an inch taller afterwards.

Hi! I started taking Pilates through my fitness center at work. I take a class during lunch on Thursdays for 30 min and I absolutely love it. I have been going for almost a year now and I hope to add in the 1 hour class on Tuesdays when the next 10-week session starts.

A little about me. I work as a scientist at a major pharma, have a wonderful bf, a big fam, 2 kitties, love to dance and be with friends. I try to work out regularly but accept that sometimes work and life will get in the way. I am all about creating good habits and not trying to mold myself into some standard that isn't realistic or healthy. I am VERY excited for spring to finally get here so I can swap some outdoor workouts into my routine!

Coming back to the team! I think I was a member once upon a time! I love pilates, but always push it to the back-burner for other fitness challenges or just life in general. I am re-committing to it in March! I can't wait for my workout tomorrow morning.

Anyway- I am Mary-Catherine, 26 year old over-scheduled wife, mother, gym manager, personal trainer, runner, and general fitness fanatic! Can't wait to get to know everyone

emoticon Hello!

I am brand new to the team... I am quite busy with my two jobs, but am working on improving finding more (if any) me time, meaning more SP as well.

I have been doing Pilates for over four years now, but it was usually done through a class my gym offered. I have just now started to take interest in at-home Pilates, seeing as a gym membership is just too expensive for me now.

Yes, everyday is a new day... but all those new days add up. Soon you'll wonder how come all the new days really seem just like the last, unless change starts here and now.
