Good job!! Just think - if you lost even 2 pounds a week that is over 100 pounds a year.

You were correct! I only lost 2.8 pounds this week. I guess I am kind of upset but realize that it's not water weight anymore so that's good!! I'm glad I keep going down :)

I am now in the 160s!! :) Now my goal is to get into the 150s! emoticon

WANTAWAIST,
Fantastic! You have to be doing things right.

Don't be upset if next week you ONLY loose 2 or 3 pounds. Week 1 is a combination of fat and water lost, week 2 is pretty much just fat.

But you are definitely on the right path and if you've made it through week 1 then your hardest, lowest energy days are over.

James

WANTAWAIST,
35 is a great low carb number. Some carbs have to get in, or else you can't eat any healthy vegetables.

Four weeks of low carb, ... maybe you'll loose about 12 pounds, plus a few pounds of water weight.

The water would come right back in a heartbeat if you return to higher carb things, but still...

Hi! I'm new here. I just started a low carb diet yesterday. My goal is to stay under 50 carbs a day but my menu puts me closer to 35 most days. I started by creating a menu for the week. I find that if I know exactly what I am able to eat each day, I tend to stick to it better.

I'm going to my friend's wedding in 33 days! I hope this low carb change can help me shed some weight/fat before that.

A little bit more about me. I have 2 kids. I live in MN. I work full time and work 50 miles away from my house Mon-Thurs, so I don't have a lot of at home time. I'm training for a half marathon in Sept. I've been trying to lose this "baby" weight for 3 years. My daughter will be 3 at the end of July.

Happy to be here and learn more tricks and tips about low carb!

Yeah and what's really yummy is cabbage fried in bacon grease and then I stir in 2 eggs and some garlic , little red pepper flakes. That was lunch!

I love Brussels sprouts if they are fixed right. I have yet to try a few things like eggplant. A mandoline is really nice for slicing.

Thanks a lot :-) Yes, I am learning to like new things, and to find substitutes for some of the foods I ate regularly (sometimes I even bake low carb bread), luckily I have always liked veggies but there are a few low carb veggies that I have yet to try (notably Brussels sprouts).... I have always loved zucchini so that hasn't been a problem at least ;-) I struggle a bit to make zucchini 'noodles', I should probably try to find a julienne slicer.

Welcome KUCHIKIRUKIA.

The first week is the toughest, then subsequent weeks have cravings, which slowly subside.

The good news is that your preferences for foods will probably change over a few months, be open to liking things (probably vegetables) that you didn't used to like. So it's not all about loss of things you liked, there is gain too.

I love zucchini now. What a traitor I am to my former preferences.

Hi Everyone :-)

My name is Marissa, I am from Cape Town in South Africa, and I have been following a low carb diet (something in between Atkins and Tim Noakes' diet I guess) for about 6weeks now, down about 7kg and hoping to lose another 15kg or so. It's been quite hard to adjust (I have always been a carb-lover, so it wasn't easy to say goodbye) but I am getting used to it slowly but surely. It would be great to talk to other low-carbers, exchange recipes and ideas, and just to keep each other motivated.

Have a great day and good luck to all of you on your journey to a healthier future :-)

emoticon Hi, My name is Cheri and I currently live in Tulsa Oklahoma but am originally from Syracuse New York. I am a SAHM of two beautiful baby girls. One is 3 and the other just 6 months. I am still trying to lose this baby weight and I once tried the protein power diet when I was in college and lost quite a bit of weight with it so I am currently trying that out again. So happy to have found a team that can support me in this journey because it has been a hard one. Lost the first 20 lbs from my pregnancy within a month after having my daughter but have been struggling to lose the rest.

Reaching that goal weight by 2015

Hi! my name is Katie. I am from Arkansas! I joined a 90 day low carb challenge group on facebook. I learned from my sister in law's sister and her mom that eating low carb will help me balance my blood sugar, lose the weight and curb my sweet cravings. I decided to give it a try.

I did my first day yesterday making progress. before I began low carb I was shocked to learn I was eating way over like 100 g carbs. yesterday I reduced it to 63g.

Today down to 24g of carbs including dinner. would love low carbing friends

Hello my Name is Angie, I am from the suburbs of New York. I have been Diagnosed with pre diabetes. I am working towards a better low carbs diet to keep all under control. I have 4 grand children 1 boy 8 years & 3 girls from the age of 4,3 & 9 months. I knew about the low carb way of life because I lost 25lbs in 2000 on Atkins but never stuck to it because I love my rice dishes. I have decided to stick with low carbs and whip myself back to a healthy body.

Hello everyone I am Jennifer from Northern Michigan. I have been a diabetic for 14 years. I have been eating low carb for about 3 weeks now. I am happily surprised that I am losing weight easier than on a traditional diet.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone and learning much more about the low carb lifestyle.

Thanks for letting me be apart of your team!

I am Diabetic and have gone to nutrition class for Diabetics. They recommended 45 grams of carbs per meal and 2 snacks. Tried it with not good results. I am in the second week of atkins and doing great have lost about 5 pounds and the Glucose numbers are coming down. Spoke to my doctor today and with the last 2 week readings readings she reduced some of my diabetic medicine.

Hi! My name is Sandy. I'm from the Huntington, WV area, and somewhat new to the low carb deal. I'm on my 6th day. I'm doing more the Atkins deal, but have not cut it down to their induction recommendation. Coming from a carb addict, I wanted to ease into it. At the point of doing anywhere from 50-100 carbs a day. Down from an average of over 200. I have tried several types of diets to no avail or no lasting results after being diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. I decided to do this when I took a quiz to see how carb sensitive my body was. Needless to say.......very! First day of going completely in with 20-25 carbs. I have lost a total of 5 pounds with doing 50-100 carbs. Glad to be here.

I am new to this team (not new to Spark and not new to low carbs), but I am still struggling with what fits ME and mine best. I have taken off about 40 pounds, but am stalled (for several months) and need to also find ways to motivate my husband who eats what I fix (then goes and gets toast and jam after the meal). He recently had a heart attack and so it is more critical than ever that he eats what is good for him. Of course low carb bucks the medical advice (even though when he followed it he had a marvelous checkup--perfect bloodwork. He strayed back to mixing low fat and carbs and that is when the "event" happened)!

I live in Washington State (east side, Spokane area) but love to visit anyplace new. Another challenge is eating low carb (they always bring the big fluffy roll, don't they?) at restaurants. A steak and a salad (or chicken breast and veggie) is my go to meal, but who knows WHAT else is added to cooking spices?

That's my story. Looking forward to learning what works and keeps us healthy and alive.

My name is Jeanne (pronounced Jean ee); I live in eastern Washington State.

Yep, it's kind of overwhelming at first but it gets easier. You just have to wade through it and not get too wigged out.

Welcome to the team!! I can relate. I was a vegetarian in high school and it didn't work well for me either.

Happy Saturday Everyone -

I'm new to the team and hope you don't mind me jumping in here.

I too have been on every diet known to man - and had been a vegetarian for many years and the weight kept going up and up. Along with my blood sugars :-(

I have the low carb vegetarian book by Rose Elliott - and you can do it! I myself ending up going back to following Atkins last week because - truthfully the only reason I cut out meat was because I wanted to lose weight. I now try to stick to farm raised, but not essential. And I do measure my protein and fat out - but don't get crazy out it.

Get through the first week or so eating moderate protein and plenty of heathy fats and veggies and the you'll start to feel happier, less hungry...be kind to yourself!

Hi Vera! Welcome! Atkins is a great diet!

Lots of people seem to really like the protein powders.

I found something that helps get my protein up. It's soy protein isolate. It's essentially powdered soy (like whey protein powders bodybuilders use). You mix one cup (it's a 30g cup that comes with it) into water or unsweetened soy milk (I do a 30/70 ratio).

It keeps me happy for long periods, especially in the mornings when facing an omelet is the last thing I want to do— or when I'm having a carb or sweet tooth craving.

Protein keeps me satisfied too, especially with some healthy fat with it.

I have craving when I don't get enough protein. Protein stays longer in the tummy. I also eat the good carbs instead of the bad ones, like veggies, steelcut oatmeal, or grits. If those last two don't satisfy that craving for bread, I don't know because I love it and have to be careful of my amount...almost like a treat.

I like meat and taters and even gravy if made low carb but can do without the bread. When you crave bread eat a healthy snack. Try not to think about foods you can't have but the ones you can. Don't have bread in the house. It's easier to avoid it that way.

Texas here. I must limit the bad carbs for my tummy. I had the gastric sleeve on Jan 16, 2012. I have 40 more lbs to go for my goal of 160.

Raised here in Texas, we love our meat and taters, especially with gravy and garlic bread. Yes, I have problems with bread, chips, fritos. I also love cheese so that isn't so bad. Have give up sodas and sugar. Just need to curb the carbs.

It sounds like you have an easy fix if you want to drop some pounds. I'm not a fan of alcohol but I do like cheese. It does stall some people though so I try to keep it to a serving or two a day.

Nope. I was never one of the vegetarians that survived on doughnuts, etc. I do however eat large portions only to satisfy the hunger that carbs don't satisfy. Even at my heaviest, my HDL count was fantastic as my doctor put it (he was quite surprised considering my weight). He did say that lowering the carbs in my diet would bring a weight loss.

I do exercise— high intensity zumba class 2x weekly on top of a "keep fit" class and walks in between. Idle I am not. Unfortunately, I get hungry after my late night class and will indulge in a snack. Cheese is my downfall.

That's where my query of calories comes in— because of the calories in cheese.

Also... wine. Can't say no to a glass or two at night. I bet if I stopped the late night wine and cheese party, my weight would certainly go down!

We have had a couple of members in the past that were low carb vegetarians. You are a prime example of why carbs and calories do count. Many people assume that being a vegetarian automatically means you are eating a healthy diet but it doesn't. I have friends who are obese vegetarians. I'm sure you don't eat this way but you can be a vegetarian and live on cookies, cakes, pies, candy, doughnuts, sugary cereals, etc. Calories do count and the quality of carbs matters. It is a healthy diet if your diet focuses on legumes, veggies, fruits, and possibly soy and whole grains if you consider those healthy.

Hi Barberela444! The plan I'm using restricts carbs at the start and ups them in the next step. Calories don't come into play, but common sense does. Sensible amounts of proteins and fats shouldn't prevent you from losing and you shouldn't feel hungry either. My plan recommends eating 3 meals and 2 to 3 snacks between meals through out the day. I spread the carbs out so I don't go more than 5 hours without having some. Hope this info helps you!

Hello all! I'm an American married to a Brit living in a sleepy little village in East Anglia (England). I discovered a book called "Vegetarian Low Carb" by Rose Elliot and decided to do it.

Despite being a vegetarian for 31 years, I've been on a diet practically all my life and always felt hungry. I couldn't understand why ("everyone else was satisfied eating the WW way....")— that is, until I went on high protein/low carb.

But I'm a bit confused— should one be concerned with the calories consumed? The book recommends at least 60g protein and limiting carbs to 20g for the first two weeks. After that one can up the carbs to a level that one is still losing (ie 45g).

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Chicago Cops...well all Chicago city workers tend to retire in pockets around the country. Some head to particular suburbs because they can't bear to be far from the city. In the early 90's everyone headed to Las Vegas and Phrump NV. Later Bull Shoals Arkansas was invaded. Southern IL and Tennessee are hot spot retirement spots now. A few stay on in the city. We won't be among them. We haven't chosen our retirement place yet. Unless Hubby is promoted in the next couple of years, we'll be changing our address in a couple of years!

Hi! If you are on other low carb teams, you may have already read this...if not...well here ya go! emoticon

Hi All! I'm Diana, 58 and a Chicago cops wife. My kids are grown and have gifted me with 6 beautiful grand daughters and a very handsome grandson! Bonus! A great grand daughter too! I'm hesitant to mention the name of the plan I'm following...because the name makes it seem less legit. But I gave it a half heart effort in October and lost 11 lbs and over 13". I wasn't hungry, my body began function more regularly and I was sleeping better than I had in years. My lab numbers improved an my doctor was actually a bit giddy about the results. My husband went on furlough in Nov. and I wasn't ingrained enough in the program to keep it up. My routine changes a lot with having hubby home. The good news is no gains during the holidays. I'm guessing while I wasn't falling the plan, the info was in the back of my mind and influencing my choices here and there. Enough to keep me from back tracking. Yesterday I started the first phase over. An 8 week reset that allows plenty of neutral foods and a fair amount of counter carbs. Enough so I don't feel deprived. I'm looking forward to sharing recipes, ideas, successes, support and much more with you all!

We are on all kinds of low carb plans so we tend to eat differently.

I keep it simple and try to eat fresh food and cull most processed foods.

I eat 5 egg whites, 1-2 strips of uncured lower sodium bacon, a clementine or orange, a glass of unsweetened almond milk or a glass of Hood Calorie Countdown Chocolate Dairy Beverage for breakfast.

For lunch I have a main dish salad with mixed greens, radishes, cauliflower, broccoli, pepper, carrot, 2 hard boiled egg whites, cheese, sunflower seeds, meat, and homemade dressing. Sometimes a piece of fruit.

For supper I have a piece of meat, a veggie or 2, and a piece of fruit.

I have a list of snacks I eat too - things like cheese, nuts, peanut butter, etc.

Ok...it's New year's eve...we are planning our back-on-track plan and I want to use SparkPeople to help get back on my low carb plan. Can someone direct me to an explanation on how to use this team site? I am also looking for low-carb daily or weekly menu plans....we get tired of eating the same things day after day.

I am from Ohio.

Welcome to the team!! I sure envy you those temps! I wish I could give you some of our moisture. We have had too much lately.

Thanks you for the encouragement. I hope everyone is ready to get down to business - it's time to get fit.

Hi All, I am from N CA, wine country. It is beautiful here, we have been in the 60's all month, but we need rain really bad!! We have only had about 5 inches all year. We are going to be in real trouble. But hopefully we will get it Jan- April is still our rainy season. We don't get rain between May and November usually. But there doesn't seem to be anything usual about the weather these days!!
I think I am going to enjoy this team. Many great and helpful threads....Seems we have a great leader in Morticiaaddams! emoticon emoticon
