Well...I shouldn't be so hasty! I do have a tender place on my heel...it feels kinda like a heel spur. I haven't taken my Allopurinol...so my uric acid is likely still elevated. I see him on Friday. He's going to check everything to make sure we didn't miss anything. All I can think about is the co-pays for the labs- $10 in-house,$25 if they send them out. Cha-ching!

The gout is finally gone...after 3 months, off & (mainly!) on. Now I need to watch for triggers. Avoid high purine foods, manage stress, start on my ACV(Apple Cider Vinegar) It better do it's magic because I see my PCP on 7/17,and he will be expecting my uric acid level to be down!

The edema in my feet and ankles is better since I started wearing my compression socks...I can tell the difference, because I didn't wear them today but the swelling isn't as bad as it was.

Hopefully, tomorrow I can get to GNC and pick up some organic Apple Cider Vinegar. I haven't started on the Allopurinol yet...shhhh! Don't tell the Dr. The joints in my toes still feel inflammed, but no active episodes.

Like an idiot,I went to the urgent care clinic, since I couldn't bear weight on my knee or foot when I got up this morning. I'm halfway through a flare, and the skin on my feet and ankles is stretched tight from fluid retention.

I used to work at the hospital where I go to the Family Practice clinic. An old co-worker met me in the clinic. She acknowledged the complexity of my health issues. My 1st gout episode started on 4/7/08,and seems to have gotten worse.

JOE...anybody! Have you been to a rheumatologist for your gout/gouty arthritis? I am seen in a large teaching hospital, and the Family Practice docs are full of themselves, and can't admit when they're stumped. They keep assuring me that they can handle everything on their own. I haven't even discussed Rheumatology yet.

Looks like it's gonna be abother night when I fall asleep in my reclincer, and stumble to bed around 03:00. I can't squirm around as much in my recliner. In bed, every time I roll over, my pain wakes me up.

emoticon OUCH!!!

This hot weather, along with not being able to wear my compression socks has taken a toll on my swollen feet. The skin is tight, and it's peeling off.

Talked to my Dr.and he said it wouldn't be necessary to taper off the Prednisone. Say what? I guess it's Cold Turkey after tomorrow!

He/We think that my change in gait and straining my knee is causing the intermittent stabbing pain. I really don't feel like spending half the day in the clinic so the Dr.can send me for x-rays that will probably not show much. I'll see how I feel later on in the week.

I am happy to report that the inflammation in my foot has significantly decreased,AND the pain in my knee is improved. I have enough Prednisone left to take it through Monday, and then wean myself off of it for 5-6 days. FINALLY!

I also have high hopes that the Apple Cider Vinegar that Joe directed me to will do it's magic so that I will not have to go on Allopurinol indefinitely. emoticon

OUT WITH THE GOUT!

I have "guarded optimism"...and that's a good thing! After 3 days on the higher dose of Prednisone,I have observed that my pain & swelling have decreased some. I talked to the Dr.this morning, and he said I should be able to start on the Allopurinol soon.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel! Let's hope that I have no adverse effects from the Allopurinol!

Hi, Sweet Sandy,

I'm so glad you got a stronger dose of Prednisone. From what I have been reading, it is supposed to be the best way to ease the pain and decrease the number of gout episodes, or at least increase the amount of time between episodes. I am sorry that you have had to go through so much pain, and you know I am always around if you need anything from me or if there is something I can do to cheer you up!

Here's to modern medicine, your doctor, and especially to you, Sandy! emoticon

DEAREST JANET,
I called the clinic this morning and spoke to the DR. on call. He tripled my Prednisone dose,so that it sure to make a major impact on my gout. I'm also supposed to follow-up with my regular Dr.to see if he wants to make any other changes. I wondered if the dose was high enough, but who am I to question?
I will read that article soon.

Thanks,
Sandy

Hi, Sandy, Boy this thing just is ongoing! The good news is that it will eventually make your pain decrease. I just posted something about Prednisone in the "Drugs for Gout" thread that will give you some hope for your recovery from pain.

Good to see that you are still hanging tough in spite of it all.

I love you!

I'm still waiting for the Prednisone to kick in, while in the midst of yet more attacks. It finally made it to my big toe, like normal. It feels like I'm walking on rocks. I'm calling the Dr. next week. I can't start my Allorurinol until the attacks subside. I'm on week 9 of this ordeal...I hope I'm not developing gouty arthritis. I feel like the joints in my feet are going to be permanently deranged. OUCH!

I forgot to ask,and the Dr.probably didn't know how long it would take for the steroids to kick in. I can tell a difference in my mood today. I'm edgy,so my hope is that soon, the med will do it's work on my body, too. Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory drug,so anywhere I have swelling should feel better...I think my neck isn't as stiff as usual!

Sandy, I'm happy you are on your way to recovery, but sorry that you have to take more meds. What is your doctor's estimation on when the Prednisone will take full effect?

I awoke 3 weeks ago with one of the worst pains of my life. It felt like I had fractured my foot. It was Saturday, but, luckily, the clinic was open until noon. Of course it was in my right foot, but I drove anyway.

The Practitioner examined it and diagnosed it promptly. Trouble is, I can't take any of the regular meds for gout due to other medical issues. 1 week later the pain had improved, but it was still hot, red, and swollen. She put me on Colchicine, which I was supposed to take every 2-3 hrs.until the symptoms subsided. The side effects were not pleasant. 80% of patients that take it experience nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. I had everything except the vomiting.

Week #3- Awoke and felt like the arch in my foot was broken. Dr.wasn't on duty, so I started taking the anti-gout medicine again, on my own. My foot is 75% better today, and I'm taking the medicine until ALL of the symptoms are relieved.
