I got stalled by summer, too, but feel inspired again by cooler weather that will allow for more exercise and yardwork. I had remodeling problems and eating became more challenging, so I want to get back to that, too. But I mostly want to get into the emotional work so that I don't find that I get so easily sidetracked. I'm impressed by your having a workbook devoted to this. I hope you will share some of your insights on the threads devoted to each chapter of the book as you go through it.emoticon

thanks all for your helpful words and advice! i stalled with my reading of the book for a bit, but i'm back at it. i even bought a new journal and have started doing the exercises and just writing down my thoughts and observations about my eating patterns.

good luck with you own work with 'shrink yourself'!

ArtMistress, I know what you mean about RE-reading the book, because you do have to THINK over what Dr. Gould has to say. I use a YELLOW Marker to highlight parts that I want to remember. I have written in my book like a textbook.

You can do nothing for anyone but yourself, so when you eat out with your relative, remember to LOVE YOURSELF and chose what will make you feel better, not worse.

Welcome! I think SY does have effects pretty quickly because of how well Dr. Gould explains things. I finished the first half of the book but am going back to read and post to the threads here on the thoughts that stood out to me.

Welcome, Artmistress78! I'm sorry your family member is having trouble. Isn't it annoying how hard it is to get good food choices for a decent price when eating out? I guess as long as the common culture chooses those foods, that's what will be offered, and we just have to work around it. In fact, we have to accept that many people don't "use" those foods in similar situations. We can learn to become one of those people and that's what Shrink Yourself is all about. You actually do have a lot of control, and your total self is using it to protect you in what it knows as the best way possible! Right now, soothing yourself with food is the most powerful method you know. As you read and practice more, you'll find other ways, but it probably won't be linear. As an artist, I'm sure you know how a work can emerge in small bits or big visions! I'm so glad you've joined us!

hello all, glad to see this group here. i just started reading shrink yourself, i'm only a few chapters in. i actually already feel like it's helping. i've been taking a second to think before i eat anything to see if i'm really hungry and if what i'm eating is really useful to my body. sometimes it works....sometimes it doesn't. it'll take time to form the thought process as a habit.

other than that, i'm currently in a stressful situation with a family member. her sickness has caused me to eat out a lot and definitely eat unhealthy food as a reactionary device. i believe that lack of control is my main trigger for EE. i also do weird things to my hair and get tattoos...i see a lot of trips to the stylist and tattoo parlor in my future!

i look forward to reading the rest of the book and hope that it will help me control my issues and realize my weight goals. good luck to you all!

I'll make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machine. sarashawger.com
