Seems a bit quiet. A couple of good, consistent bloggers, though.
I wish I would have thought to look for a group like this when I restarted. I get so exhausted with the external-locus-of-control platitudes rather than encouraging people to take responsibility for their own actions.

Either way, I'm happy to be here.

36. High of 299, currently 253. Lost significant weight after my first son was born. Wasn't all that heavy after my second son was born, but, relationship stress, full time work stress, full time college stress, part time work stress and the rest of life did not help and I jumped up quite steadily for a few years.
Learning to stand up for myself, quitting a stressful job, scheduling time for ME instead of being guilted about it are all vital to my current path.

If anyone's still out there to see this, I'm excited to find this team...as an adult, I became an atheist when I realized that what I'd been taught in church just didn't stand up to reason, and that I didn't need the promise of a hidden reward or the threat of punishment to be a good person and do the right thing.
I'm an ordained minister in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and am currently awaiting a decision on my ordination in the United Church of Bacon (for real).
Like all of you, I'm tired of seeing god(s) everywhere and would be thrilled to find a supportive team where that's not an expectation.
Thanks!

There are quite a few scary groups out there on sparks (and to some, this team is scary for them!)

Welcome to the group, happy to have you!

Glad to find a group where religion is left up to the individual.

I am Erin, 45yo, contemplating atheism, former resident of the Bible Belt now living and working in CA. I've become frustrated by the blanket intolerance and anger present in so many religious practitioners. I was raised to believe that my rights ended where another person's began and I don't understand why that is such a difficult concept for so many. I also don't understand the need to inject religion into every interaction.

For instance, did you know there is an SP Team devoted to the protection of "traditional" marriage? What does marriage--traditional or not--have to do with weight loss and personal health?

Anyway, glad this group exists. Glad to meet you all.

We are happy each time a cool person stumbles upon this team.

I moved to the Nashville TN area last July. Nice mixture of sinners & thumpers. Many appear bent on finding me a church home. I'm just trying to survive the biscuits.

Welcome Lyddiecat!

I haven't been to church since I was little. My older brother made it extremely unpleasant. Basically, there would be a huge fight & then we'd just change out of Sunday best & stay home. My parents just gave up. (thank God! lol)

I am really enjoying watching Oklahoma City trying to keep the Statue of Satan from being put next to the Ten Commandments.
Gotta love an unconstitutional government endorsement of a religion.

Hello everybody,
I am so relieved to find this team! I have been a member of SP since 2012, but I just stumbled across this group today. Like all of you, I am tired of people praying and praising and lifting each other up to the Lord (what does that even mean, anyway? I get a mental image of someone crowd-surfing in front of puffy, golden, heavenly clouds). I'm married, 42, and currently living in southern PA. I say "currently living" here, because I have no intention of spending the rest of my life here. I am originally from Maine, and my husband is from CT, and we are planning on moving closer to New England when he retires.

I am currently trying to decide if I am atheist or agnostic. I guess the nature of this indecision makes me agnostic by default. I actually do belong to a Unitarian Universalist church, where it is completely normal to be atheist, agnostic, or pagan or whatever. I actually dislike the word "church" and wish it was called something else. Southern PA is big Bible-thumping territory; we actually sought out the UU church in an effort to meet people who were not Christians.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and talking about health and fitness and good food, without the Bible verses and prayer circles and crowd-surfing for Jesus.

Here in Nashville, we are waiting for our music note to drop at midnight. If 2013 was good to you, get ready to rock 2014 as well.

On the other hand, If you've had all of 2013 that you can stand, a fresh start will be here at midnight.

Best wishes to all.

This summer we relocated from Wisconsin to the Nashville, TN area. My bible-thumping kinfolk down here are praying for me. Barf!

Strangers assume any new resident is seeking a church home, which I am not, but I thank them nicely and change the subject to football or the weather or food, which are the other things that interest them.

Jump right in and get acquainted with your team mates. Check out some of our existing threads. Or feel free to start threads of your own on any subject you like.

Hey, my name is Kirbie, I'm 26 and live in Canada. I came across this group through "the dark side of spark" team. And, like others I feel it's nice to have a place where there isn't prayer circles or God talk.
I come from a family of no religion, in fact I will admit that I know very little about it. My family was never interested in it and I never cared to know much about it myself. 'Believe what you want but don't preach it to me' is my motto.
I've lived in a rural area's my whole life and grew up in a staunch Catholic town where everyone was very old school thinking and beliefs. I have since 'graduated' to living in a small town filled to the brim with Mennonites who are much more vocal about their beliefs! I must have a beacon over my head flashing 'agnostic! agnostic!' because I've had many of people try to convert me to their religion and beliefs! It's super frustrating as you all know, and I'm too nice of a person to tell them to bugger off.
I often close my curtains when I see Jehovah's circling the block and just shut my mind off whenever someone talks about how beautiful God's weather is today or recites a verse from the Bible.

Anyways! This is my 3rd time on SP, 2nd time seriously. I'm looking forward to getting back into the groove of this site and meeting some like-minded people that I can relate to. I have around 80ish lbs I'd like to loose and am working on changing my habits and fears towards food instead of obsessing over the scales.

Hello! Basically, I believe that whatever works for you is fine as long as you respect people's lifestyles and beliefs and respect and love others. I sought out this group because I am surprised by how many people put Bible quotes in their signatures and answer with "we will pray for you" on SparkPeople. I think religion is highly personal and can be alienating/annoying to others who don't share the same beliefs if it is made too much part of daily discussion and/or forced on people who don't want to know about it. Nice to find a group where people agree!

Welcome to the group, Becky. This is a nice little refuge we have here. I'm happy you've found us.

I'm also happy to report that I'm all settled in the smaller place in Lebanon, TN. We have our Internet up and running. Woohoo!

I worked so hard preparing for the move that I came down with a case of shingles right after we got here. It's on the upper right quadrant of my head. What a mess! Almost over it. Onward, everyone. :)

Hi everyone! thank Buddha for your page! i am fine with the existance of organized religion and i really could care less what others believe, but i don't appreciate it when beliefs of others apparently feel the obligation to pry into onto my existance - how awesome it is to say that to a group of strangers!

i try to follow the Buddhist ideology of "want creates discomfort," however, i really want to get in better shape so here i am following the laws of science and counting calories :)

Welcome, everyone.

Sorry I've been late in welcoming some of you. This past year has been a mess. Moving from a 4-br house that was full of junk in WI to a 2-br place just outside Nashville, TN has taken my mind and body. The worst is over, I think. We will be in TN and be hooked up to internet in July. Hope to see more of YINZ (plural "you") soon. I'm at McDonald's on their WIFI today.

Hello Everyone!

I'm very happy to have found this team and hope to inspire others as well as to be inspired by others lol.

My attraction to this team was the name first, of course, and also the idea that I could share my thoughts, feelings and criticisms of whatever - myself, theology, politics, etc., - without being called names, being unfriended and blocked. Oh, wait...that's Facebook lol.

I am an atheist, but did not arrive at this point without having traveled a LONG path to get here - starting with my 25-year "career" as a christian (raised pentecostal/evangelical). That's definitely a story for another time lol.

Suffice to say, everyone's story is unique, but with weight loss and a healthy lifestyle on everyone's mind, I believe we are all after the same goal and it will be fun interacting with the team and reaching our goals together.

Yay team!

So happy to find this team. While I am usually not terribly hostile to the religious, it's nice to have a place where every signature is not some verse. I love quotes - I am as pithy as they come, but I worry that when speaking with a more devout person that we won't understand each other.

Anyways - my name is Jen, very early 40s, and I am carrying around a petite female in extra weight. So - here I am!! I look forward to all of the witticism I am sure I will discover on here.

Hi all. I'm Venti. I'm so glad to find this group. I live in a military community where I really almost never meet anyone who I connect with. I spend a lot of time keeping my mouth shut and it's exhausting. "Oh, no, I don't want to join your Jesus women's knitting circle, thanks though," and "Nope, I didn't catch O'Reilly last night..." has been all of my conversations. While I don't want to be negative, (to each their own, right?) I'm happy I found a team where I can be free to talk about whatever I want and not have it come back to why I need to go to church or homeschool or whatever.
About me:

I'm married with one baby. That's quite enough for me. I've been a vegetarian since the mid-nineties. Not eating meat doesn't necessarily mean I eat healthy. In fact it usually means bagels. I'm ready to take control over my health this year and crawl out of the shame spiral of emotional eating. It's up to me. I enjoy getting outdoors and will walk for miles, especially in big cities.

Nice to meet you all!

Hi everyone! I'm so glad I saw a friend join this group. I'm 31, married with dog, and tired of reading blogs from people who say that God helped them lose weight. How about it was YOU who got up off your butt and lost it yourself? Give yourself credit!

Yes... yes... I am here! All bask in my glory.

um... sorry, wrong tab... anyways, while I am here, I may as well introduce myself...

emoticon

I'm glad to have found this team - it's hard enough trying to lose weight, having to swallow some *ahem* 'spoonfuls of spiritual sugar' makes it damn near impossible for me!

I have a long, long, long way to go, so I will be here for a while - may as well jump right in.

Mom to a beautiful daughter, engaged to a very supportive guy who has seen me through thick & thicker.... and now it's time that everyone sees a little "less" of me.

That's all for now.... I can't give away all my secrets!

Love your cat glasses, TOOTY!

Nice job keeping count of the crackers, MOTH. You didn't eat the whole box, like we did in less enlightened days of yesteryear, when we were more into "all or nothing".

It was fun to see a group that even acknowledges that goodness does not rely on one religious concept. Humanity comes in many forms. It is empathy for others that connects us and that is what I try to focus on. For example, i empathize with all of us in our desire to be the best we can be regardless of our backgrounds and circumstances. I have been having a bit of a struggle lately...just munched down 16 crackers...but tomorrow is another day. And at least I did not choose bacon. Haha

We are delighted to exist, DESERTMOTH. It's also a happy thing to have a civil rights attorney as a friend.

We're not against religion either. We just don't want religious thought to be our ONLY thought.

As a civil rights attorney I am SO excited to find your group. I am not against religion. I just don't want all my support encouraged by biblical quotes. Lol. Thanks for existing

I'm a 56 year old woman that has about 60 or so pounds to lose but losing weight for me is extremely slow, so can use all the added support I can get. I'm just getting back into regular exercise after the all clear from breaking my wrist 6 weeks ago and having to get 3 plates and 8 screws in it. Still have to do the PT on it, but I can go full speed with what I need to do to get my weight down.

Hi, I'm Marcia. I've sparked in the past, and came back at the end of May. Have done very well. Love the 5% Challenges, and was actually one of the leaders for a team during the Summer 5% challenge. Will also be a leader with the Fall 5% which starts in September.
I joined another challenge, too. Found myself on a team with some super religious people. Big sigh!
Glad to have found this team where I can vent from time to time.

Welcome, Susan! My, what a great name you have! emoticon There is something here for everyone... I'm very close to my maintenance weight (I want to be 140 or under). I haven't been to the gym in a while, maybe I'll see ya there, too. emoticon

I'm happy that you are here, SUSAN. It sounds to me like you will meet many kindred spirits on this team.

I, too, leave my vacuum in the middle of the floor.

Congrats on reaching your weight goal and for realizing that staying there will take some work. You might want to get to know the people involved in the ongoing challenge, "Live the Hell Out of 2012". Some are there on a regular basis and others pop in and out as they need to talk about things. The object is to gradually make changes that we can live with, in the way we think, plan, eat, cook, exercise, or whatever else needs work. We don't want to have to lose the weight again.

If you are interested, we also do short challenges. We just finished one for July, and I'll SparkMail you and the rest of the team when I get something together for this month. In the meantime, enjoy yourself. Our virtual gym has any kind of equipment you need, to keep you strong and sexy, and it's free to all members.
