I just remembered that Coach Dean has several articles on busting through weight plateaus that I have found perked me up when disappointed about what the scale is doing or not doing. The body does have to take time to readjust, as you say. Then, the weight starts dropping again.

Certainly the questions posed at the end are very interesting.I would never consider myself addicted to bad behaviour. I think it is disappointment that the program that was working appears to suddenly not be working, so you revert to comfort eating to compensate yourself. It doesn't of course. And can lead to a binge and downward spiral if commonsense is not dragged in. So far I have resisted it. I know this works, I just have to let my body catch up with itself. Weight measureing is a complicated thing. Keep away from the scales, and I will be fine.

I'm guessing it has to do with the escape routes that you have learned to use for quick (if only temporary) relief. We learn to rely on less than ideal behaviors and they feel comfortable, in a way, even when we know they are not serving us well. At least, that's been my experience.

I like what this guy says about learned behavior.

I don't know if it will speak to YOU or not. See what you think about it.

I have learned a lot of coping behaviors over the years that I am now in the process of "unlearning".

With all of my years of losing 80-to100 lbs and regaining and losing it, ad nauseum, via the help of my emotional behavior patterns and the "dieting behaviors" I learned along the way, I am relieved to be exposed to the new way of thinking that SparkPeople and experts like Dr Binks provide. Coach Dean's articles are also among my favorites.

It's almost as if everything I have learned is going wrong, and the only way out is to behave stupidly. Where does this come from?

Good for you, EVELYN, for proving to yourself that there is more than one way to measure progress. Keep that trusty tape measure handy.

That new battery is also a good idea, I think. The scale is liable to tell us really strange stuff when its battery is low.

It's a strange thing, but when I think I am gaining weight or feel stuck, my fears kick in to torment me and make overeating seem like the best thing to do. If I give in and let the overeating begin, I feel even more discouraged and fearful. The more often I can resist those urges to overeat, the better I feel and that's another measure of progress. Weakening our former bad habits and strengthening the healthier ones takes time, and we can do it.

Yes, we can!

That's my sermon for today.

We will often be moved to climb up on our soap boxes and/or pulpits to spew forth what we have personally learned, we know that there is not ONE answer to losing weight and getting healthier and happier. That's the beauty of the diversity of this team.

Well on a diet related thread, I have been really discouraged the last month to only loose 0.5kg, I told myself all the usual sensible things about the scales and weight loss, then when I didn't really believe it, took the scales battery out and binned it! So I can't keep hopping on and off terrified I will put all 10 kg back overnight!

So today I did my tape measurements. I was amazed to find that I'd lost a whole cm off my waist, and 4 cm off my hips. So maybe now I believe what I'm telling myself, and I don't need to weigh myself for another fortnight. Need a new battery now anyway.

Crisis averted.

emoticon to our refuge! I left my last group because they were constantly praying! If it wasn't weight loss, it was somebody's relative or friend who was having a bad time. A lot of it wasn't even diet related, it was a prayer group!emoticon

We are safe, since we never offer to pray for anyone, no matter what they do. We empathize, sympathize, laugh at one another, and otherwise support. Mainly, we take responsibility for our actions and don't rely on help from "out there" somewhere, where the fairy dust and/or holy water are abundant.

Religion is fine if it works for someone. It has never worked for me because I'm in the same boat as you, not believing in those things you mentioned. And I am not happy when others try to force their beliefs on me (and look down on me as some kind of fool because I don't believe what they do).

I'm just sick of the way that religion is shoved down your throat all the time. I do not believe in any gods, or Jesus, or faries at the bottom of the garden, it is pure superstition. The next person who offers to pray for me will be given a poke in the eye!

Hi all! I found myself avoiding some groups because I am not affiliated with any particular religion, persuasion, or mindset. It's good to know you all are out there for support and inspiration.

I'm not telling you it's going to be easy; I'm telling you it's going to be worth it.
