Hello, my name is Dollie. I'm trying to get back into the swing of things here on SP. This is my third time I think, but I'm gonna try REALLY hard to stick with it this time. Part of the reason I have such a hard time is because the healthy foods seem to cost more.

Hi my name is Jenn. On a fixed income it's so hard to eat right. I think it's a reason why I've put on weight fast.

Hello everyone. I just joined the team. I am on a budget of $80 per week for groceries. I feed my husband who lives off pop and junk food and my 17 YO son who also likes to eat healthy. We shop at Aldi for 97% of our groceries. We rarely go out to eat and never get take out. I like to cook in quantity so we have left overs for lunch or another dinner.

I'm looking forward to sharing ideas with all of you.

Hi everyone! My name is Deanna. I have been a member of SP since around 2006. I lost lots of weight on here then as did my husband. Then we got pregnant and life happened and we gained it all back. I am back in hopes of losing it again. I am on a very tight budget and know from experience how expensive eating healthy can be. I need all the help I can get!
I look forward to meeting you all and working together on this weight loss journey!

Hi Shelley!!! Look around our group at old messages and hopefully you'll get some great ideas!
I find that buying things in bulk when they are at super low prices helps me a lot. When I get extra money I stock up on things that cost me money on a daily basis, like cleaners, then when food is on a great sale, I don't need to buy cleaners and have extra money to buy extra food.

If you have any questions at all please ask.

Hi Sheena and GrammyShay!!!

Sheena, you sound very resourceful. We spend $50 every week for 2 people on low carb diet. I do not buy anything pre-packaged

GrammyShay, thanks for soup recipe. I'm sure members here can definately use it.

Being on Social Security I know the woes of low income. There are times when we have to depend on Food Pantries. There food distribution can be iffy on our diets. But beggars cannot be choosy. ( I now know what my Mom meant when she would say that) Have you ever thought about making your own soup mixes? I make some of mine and they are so much healthier and sometimes cheaper in the long run. Here is one that I do use:

Cream soup

2 cups instant non fat dry milk
3/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup instant chicken bouillon
2 tablespoons dried onion flakes
1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon dried basil (optional)
1 teaspoon thyme (optional)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

directions
3.25 cups mix makes equivalent of 9 cans soup

Mix all ingredients. Store in airtight container.

To make soup: Add 1 1/2 cups hot water to 1/3 cup dry mix.

Another thing that we do is we make one meal large enough for two meals and "trade" a neighbor for a meal that they make. It varies our menu and saves a bit. Remember you can stretch a pound of ground meat (ground turkey, Aldi's) a long way.

Hi y'all! I'm Sheena and I'm on a very, very strict budget; even working full-time, minimum wage doesn't go nearly as far as I need. I'm waiting on my SNAP renewal approval (which is only something like $150 a month, after the cuts) and have a few food pantries I get to as often as possible. I usually get "ingredients" -- I figure even canned veggies have nutrients, and draining/rinsing helps with sodium content, right? The only "pre-packaged meals" I even look at are canned soups, which I try to only eat once a week (I'll make my own soup or bean-and-veggie mix for the rest of the week). Fortunately, one pantry is university-family-only, and younger students tend to grab the sugary cereals and canned pasta.

My name is Sherri. I am 50 years old. I have Multiple Sclerosis. I had Gastric Bypass 10 years ago and lost 199 lbs. I have put 99 back on.....in 9 years. My Mom raised 3 children on a shoestring and I raised my daughter the same way.I shop in one town with several stores. AND I make use of our local Dollar Tree. I have found for myself that watching the ads are my best bet. Especially during the summer months when the produce is cheaper. Watching for seasonal sales is helpful, also. If I do have to used canned veggies or fruits...I rinse them in cold water. I use a lot of dried beans of all varieties. I like to mix them also. I use meat as an 'enhancer' in many of my meals. I buy meats in bulk and package them up in meal size portions. I love soups. It is a healthy cheap meal. I am excited to get tips an such from other SparkPeople. emoticon

Hi Leslie!!!
So glad you are getting back on your feet! I look for sale ads, lots of fresh cheap vegetables & fruits. I freeze a lot of stuff to make meal time easier\ and preserve what I bought. Pre-packaged foods are not only unhealthy but expensive. There are good money saving ideas on Sparkpeople articles as well. You can even eat healthy from the 99cent store. I eat healthy on $50 a week for my $14 yr old daughter & I. I hope you get more ideas on here! Glad you are here!

Hi I'm back again!

I just got out of a shelter and now I'm looking to save some money on healthy eating. Where I was living they did all of the cooking and most of the time it was not good. It's time to get back into cooking and into exercise. That place made me tired and exausted. I need my energy back so I can look for a job and support my little girls. Please someone help!

Thanks!

I eat low carb and get fruit & veggies cheap from a mexican market and local farmers market. I buy almond meal at Trader Joes(cheapest I found),
I know you can't do this, but I changed out my entire kitchen to healthy food, pantry, cupboards, upright freezer and refrigerator.
We eat mostly vegetables, lean meats, no milk, limited cheese, berries, healthy nuts, olive oil & coconut oil & avocado. I use almond meal & stevia to make chocolate cake in a mug & blueberry muffin in a mug.

Here is a typical day:
Breakfast- a blueberry muffin in a mug, 2 slices turkey bacon, 1 cup Almond milk
Snack- 1/4 cup almonds or mozzarella cheese stick
Lunch- Pizza made from almond meal & parmesan cheese, chicken garlic & veggies, salad
Snack- Chocolate cake in a mug
Dinner- Zucchini noodles (sliced on my cheap mandolin french fry cutter) sauteed in olive oil added diced fresh or canned tomatoes, oregano powder and fresh basil I'm growing outside, parmesan cheese & ground turkey or chicken breast pieces.
Dessert- Sugar Free Jello with sugar free whipped cream(I make homemade with stevia & 2 T heavy whipping cream.

Hello I want to be on this team because I need ideas. My husband has crazy ideas about what he thinks I should be eating. He does not need to lose weight so he doesn't care to eat healthy although he eats healthier than I have in the past. I need to buy cheap healthy food for me and the usual stuff for him and not sure where to start. I am getting frustrated because I read all these articles and posts that totally disagree with one another. I just read one that says carbs are good for you and you should not be on a low carb diet and yesterday the one said that carbs aren't good and wheat causes belly fat... I would love to use the Spark Menu but 90% of the stuff they put on the menu I either do not have or can't afford to buy. Anyway I'm frustrated and so I came here just to do my own thing and get ideas of how to do it cheaply.

Hi All emoticon

My name is Stephanie and I am happily married with 2 little ones ages 4 and 6. I am also a stay-at-home mom so we have one income. I am looking for ideas and tips to be able t eat healthy and lose weight on a budget. I try but never seem to get it right and with my husband recently diagnosed with high blood pressure we both need to lose weight and eat lower sodium.

Hi "mom". Sorry I didn't see your post till today.
I'm glad you joined!
I have found steel cut oatmeal and love it. I have also rediscovered beans and find them to count as protein, and veggies and fiber and good carbs all in one. When I start seeing and adhering to portions, the food $$$'s stretch. Now it is a matter of not over buying so things don't spoil. Buy dried beans and oatmeal is a real staple in my diet. I have really enjoyed this team. emoticon

I started sparking in mid October 2012 after my 50th birthday. My DH insurance company told me about it after they listedd my health issues ... one of which was obese. I had never heard anyone call me that out loud. It opened my eyes. I had tried to loss weigh since November of 2009 and over the course of almost 3 years I had wiggled down 35#, but spark jumpstarted it all with tools and knowledge that really is working. I'm close. To kissing 30# over the course of 4 months. I also got on some new meds in October that has helped manage the chronic pain I suffer from due to OA, so moving helps me with weight loss.
I am a very frugal person and appreciate this team. I hope we can start buzzing with posts and excitement.
Sincerely, Julia
Welcome Rosie

Hi Everyone,

My name is Rosie and I'm recommitting myself to Spark People. I'm 27 and recently moved with my fiance to a new state. I joined this team because I am really struggling with my weight loss since the move and I have a feeling its because I have a hard time figuring out how to grocery shop on a budget.

I hope to get to know everyone and learn a lot.

Rosie

Welcome!!!!!
Counting portions is saving me lots of money. Fruits & veggies sure are expensive so I get mine either at a food bank or at our local Mexican market.

Hi all. I've been with sparkpeople 30 days. I just found your team today and it seems perfect. Eating all the recommended fruits and veggies a day could be very expensive. I have discovered a store named Aldi's which really helps my balance sheet so to speak. Measured food portions seems to be great too. I'm really looking fwd to learning from the team as well as sharing. Sincerely, Julia

Hi, All - I'm not new to SP but I just found this team today and thought I'd jump on board. I would like to get ideas from everyone on how they manage to eat healthy without spending a ton of money. I am always having to run to the grocery store for something and buying from the perimeter of the store is getting very expensive (produce, meats/poultry, dairy products.) I'd love to buy more organic foods but just can't fit it in the budget. Looking forward to sharing with all of you.

Hi all, Im Vicky
I joined this team because I need help with shopping because my grams buys the food here. She spends most of the money on meat, bacon, box foods, starchy potatoes, onions, junk food, and pop. Me and my aunt try to make her buy better and healthier food but she says it costs to much. I hope after some help here she will finally listen to me ::FINGERS CROSSED::

Hi, Also Have been on the team for a while, but daughter-in-law had brain surgery back in August, and we are just getting her home from the hospital!

Life is slowly getting back to normal, so would like to start to get back on track with my weight loss!

Nice to see that the site is ACTIVE again!

Hi, I'm Elizabeth and... I don't cook. I haven't quite caught on to cooking and I would just like some help. I figured budget topics and teams would be one place to go for some support.

thank you.

I'm Midgie - been on the team for awhile, but not very "present".... I just had surgery in June; and won't be on such a hectic schedule for awhile - so I hope to be around!!! I'm 47 - married almost 27 years (next month). Our sons are grown - 25 and 22, and we have 3 beautiful grandchildren. Our oldest son lives with us, and we get to have our granddaughters @ 2 days a week. emoticon Our youngest and his fiancee and our 2 and a half year old grandson are going thru some rough times financially right now as well; so we're helping them out as much as we can.

So our budget does get down to a shoestring!

Hello TEAM,

My name is Kit, and I live in Southern California.
Joined SPARK because as I grow older, I continue to add a few pounds each year! Just want to ensure that I maintain a healthy weight as I enter my golden years.

Also, just started a new job that pays significantly less than my previous job, so I am always looking for ways to save money!

Hello! This team looks like the one for me! I have a budget of 229 dollars a month to feed 3 people, one with a very active job so he needs a lot of calories and a very active 11 year old boy. This is driving me nuts because of how expensive healthy food can be! I will take anyone wanting to email me with ideas and suggestions especially for snacks in the house!
