That's what I'm thinking because mine aren't coming all at once anymore. Strange. I'll just start checking that email for emails at the end of the day instead of first thing in the am.

I ended up switching my SparkMails to Yahoo! For some reason they weren't coming into my previous e-mail address.

I am with Yahoo and haven't been having any problems that I know of in getting my mail. Maybe I should check some more.

I've had this happen to me two times as well! The first time I went to the spot where you can check which emails you want to get adn for some reason the little box at bottom that said "never email me again" was checked! I did not do this myself!

So - check there and see..other than that I have no clue! :)

EJ, I can relate to feeling like it is cheating. I have found when in question about the site sometimes it is best to go to the message board and ask it under the help forum. I'm not sure how you would change that. Sometimes if I know that something isn't what it says it is.. I will either decrease it or increase it so that it reflects a more realistic amount. Let us know what you find out please.

Thanks. Michelle

I did strength training this morning and checked it off on Fitness Tracker. But then it added like 25 minutes to my fitness minutes for the week and it did NOT take me that long! I went to edit my fitness plan and double checked that - it is set for 15 minutes of strength training...so not really sure how to change that.

It is not that big a deal, but it just seems like I'm cheating or something then..

Jam, the link works well now. I think what happened is when you copied the link on the post, you only copied part of it, not the entire link.

It works fine now.

That is the way!!! However, the link does not work because it was not copied from the page or copied incorrectly somehow. It is always best to check the link to make sure it went through correctly. If not, you can always edit the post and try again. I have to redo them all the time. Elle

Jam, when it appears, click on it, you should be able to delete it from the plan. If not, got to the Tech Forum, located in the message boards under "Community" top right of any page. They will be able to help; just be specific in your topic line. Elle

I'm manually tracking my meals. I have switched to view the meal plans from time to time but always switch back.

Is there a reason why Total cereal and milk are appearing in my Breakfast tracking every morning? Is there a way to stop this so I don't have to remove it every day?

Here was the answer. It appears that I said I was going to do one thing.. ie 30 minutes of cardio a day.. which i normally did but I didn't burn the necessary calories that they determined.. anyway what I said I would do and what they determined weren't lining up..

Explanation from SP

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/calorie

alculation101.asp

still a little confused and think it is high but it seems a bit more clear.

Thank you Elle for pointing me in the right direction.

Okay here is my question.. Every few weeks sp keep increasing my calories. This doesn't seem right. I don't know what that is happening. I sometimes go over my limit is this why? How can I get it to stay a good level so I can continue to loose? I think a good level is between 1200 - 1600 calories. Thoughts, solutions, reason why?

And it did it again today.. my calories are up to 1680 - 2200

I personally would only take supplements if my Dr. recommended it. I am on nmerous medications so I am very careful about those I do take.

For Vitamin D, this is the best information I could find:

"It is difficult to know how much vitamin D your body makes from sunlight. Scientists have established Adequate Intakes (AI) for vitamin D to help you know the amount of vitamin D needed from dietary and/or supplemental sources regardless of your sunlight exposure and body stores. The AI may overestimate your true biological need if you are able to obtain vitamin D from the sun. However, the AI is a safe level for individuals even if adequate vitamin D is already obtained from the sun.

Adequate Intakes of Vitamin DAge (years) Vitamin D (IU/day)*
Birth to age 50 200
51-70 400
71 and older 600
*IU = international units/day
Dietary Reference Intakes, National Academy of Sciences, 1997"

Department of Health

I hope this helps. Elle

What are your thoughts on vitamin supplements? I'm asking because outside of a glass of soy milk, I'm not getting enough vitamin D. I read you get it from the sun, however, being black, I may have more trouble processing it due to the melanin in my skin. So I'm thinking about going to GNC and purchasing some D tablets. Any thoughts?

It sounds like you may have a born spur or other injury which is impinging on a nerve. It is something you really should get checked out by a doctor. It is possible to do a lot of permanent damage if it is not addressed. Let me know how it goes. ~Elle~

Anyone else have this problem? Sometimes I try to walk as part of my fitness program. Usually about 35-40 minutes I start to experience pain in my left leg. It starts at the heel and radiates up slowly until eventually it goes up to the hip. We walked around Boston the other day and I was limping by the end of it. Once I relieve the pressure, the pain goes away after an hour or two. I can't figure out what the problem is.

I will be honest, I had the same problem. Foods high in protein are: Foods like eggs, milk, spinach, soybean, quinoa, meat, fish, whole grains, rice, beans, legumes, corn, oats, peas and peanut butter are good sources of high protein foods.

The foods highest in carbs are high in starch or sugar. This includes anything made with flour or sugar, grains, foods with added sugar, and starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn. Most processed foods are high in carbohydrates. Examples of low carb foods are proteins such as meat and eggs, most vegetables, low sugar fruits (such as strawberries), soy beans, and some dairy products.

To review the original material, you may want to do the "Quick Start" again. I have done it three times and find it very beneficial. To change your diet stage, go to Start, located under Tools, top left of any page. The "Change Diet Stage" is located under the three main columns on the right. You can also access the review from there.

I hope this has helped. Hugs,

~Elle~

2 questions - I seem to be within my calorie range most of the time; however a lot of times I am under my range for carbs and protein. Will this cause a problem and if so how can I increase those areas without going over on my calorie range?

Second question relates to going back over the original material from when I first started Sparks on what I should or should not be doing. Where can I find that info? I think I need a refresher to make sure that I'm doing what I should be.

In addition to your meals, are you also eating your snacks? The program calls for three meals and three snacks. You should be having a snack at the mid point between meals and a snack after dinner, just not to late. Elle

Absolutely!!! Eating fewer calories than recommended can send your body into starvation mode and then it can start burning muscle instead of fat. Sp has done a lot of research on this matter and the recommendations are based on that research and medical advice. Do NOT go below the recommended caloric intake if you do in fact want to get and stay healthy. ~Elle~

When starting ST, start with 10 to 20 min. workouts; only do ST every other day. Your muscles need a day to recover. If you are staying within your caloric guidelines and not going under, you will burn fat when doing cardio. It is only when you go below your caloric guidelines that you burn muscle mass.

FYI - the only stupid question is the one that goes unasked!!! Have a great week.

DLVDEV - When you enter anything in your nutition, it shows the nutritional value, including calories by clicking "See Nutrion Info." under the "How Much" you indicate. So go to "Your Nutrition", located under Tools, top left of any page, click on "Add a Food" - you will find "See Nutrition Info.". Hope this helps. Elle

i researched the pedometer's and came out buying the one recommended by consumer reports. It is the Omron HJ 112. I bought it off of ebay for $23 including shipping. It has been a wonderful tool helping go from sedentary group to the active group. I try to reach 10,000 every day and it is fun to try and get there.

I'm using the meal plans that the website provides. I made a batch of muffins that are on my menu for Saturday and I had a couple of them today. I wanted to add them, but they aren't showing up when I search for them in the "Add A Food" window. Why not? You'd think, that if they put in in your menu for one day, then you should be able to add it to other days.

You do not need to move on until YOU are ready. Go to "Start" located under Tools at the top left of any page; in the second column at the bottom you will find "MySpark Diet" and how to switch diet stages. I have done the "Fast Break", Stage 1, three different times. It helps me get back on track when I am sliding and reinfornces my foundation to health.

I am in Stage 2...and moved to week 3 today. The thing is, I'm not quite ready for week 3 and I know I won't be able to even begin to focus on it for several days. Is there a way to go back to the healthy habits week 2, and stay there until I'm ready to move on?

Margo: I got my pedometer at Target for about $10. The Wii Fit is a program for the Wii video game system. Pretty pricy if you don't have a Wii, but I have to say that my family has gotten our money's worth on it b/c the kids like to play it also. It's not a hard workout, but does get me motivated to do some exercise when I might otherwise just not bother.

DLVDEV, I don't know that you can just enter the whole strength training dvd as one item unless it only works one part of the body.

If you go to My Fitness (under My Tools), then go to "Add Strength Exercise," you can choose the option tab to "Add User Entered Exercise." It'll ask you if it works the Core, the Upper Body, or the Lower Body. If the tape does more than one of these, you may need to enter parts of it separately. I think that's right and I hope that makes sense.

DLVDEV, go to "My Tools," then go down to the bubble that says to weigh in. When you change your weight, the ticker should move. Don't forget to hit "save" though after changing the weight.

So, based on Cat's post about BMR, my calorie rate is 1430.58. Does that mean that I will neither gain nor lose if my calories stay at about 1430 per day, assuming no exercise?

By the same token, if I consume 1430 calories each day and burn some calories through exercise, that would mean an eventual loss (depending on my calorie deficit), right?

lean red meats, including beef, pork, lamb
seafood, such as oysters, clams, tuna, salmon, and shrimp, etc.
beans, including kidney, lima, navy, black, pinto, soy beans, and lentils
iron fortified whole grains, including cereals, breads, rice, and pasta
greens, including collard greens, kale, mustard greens, spinach, and turnip greens
tofu
vegetables, including broccoli, swiss chard, asparagus, parsley, watercress, brussel sprouts
chicken and turkey
blackstrap molasses
nuts

Okay, other than liver (yuck), what foods are higher in iron? It seems like my daily intake of iron is pretty deficient.

Or you can enter it as a recipe in the Recipe Calculator, then enter the number of servings and it will do the math for you. Once it's saved, you can access it from Recipe Box, and there's a tab for "Add to Meal Plan" and when you click that there's a place to check to add it to your favorites, so you won't have to keep going back to the recipe box every time.

I do this all the time. First calculate how many calories is in each individual item, then add them all together to get the total number of calories in the entire dish. Divide it up into portions and divide the total number by the number of portions. Ex:A 200 calorie dish divided into 4 servings would be 50 calories a serving. If you didnt divide it first then estimate what percentage of the total you took.

Salad Question. I made a huge salad last night. 2 heads of lettuce, about 8 radishes, 3 carrots, 2 peppers, 1/2 onion, and about 12 mushrooms. how do I count the nutrition in that? I did not sit down and eat it all. I only filled 3 cups for lunch today. Any suggestions for how to count things when I mix and match and only use a smaller portion of it?

Correct; the message boards all have a particular purpose. There is intro. Board for new members to introduce themselves - the Mssage Boards are more informational than anything else. The Sparkpeople Cafe has games; one can learn to and get comfortable with posting. Some of the threads are for those who really don't want to belong to teams, but want the challenges and some feedback. others are for help needed.

Elle, what exactly is the difference between the Message Boards and the Spark Teams? Are you not necessarily a member of any "team" if you're just posting to the message boards?

With ST you have to enter the particular ST exercise you do. The reason for this is so that you have a good picture of just what areas you are targeting and what you may need to work on. With ST it is not so much the time, but the intensity and the area involved. Elle

I usually do strength training in the form of a workout video. 30 day shred, strength zone, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I track this? Do I need to break down all of the moves in the video and create my own exercise, or is there a way to input a time frame for general strength training?

Hmm I don't know about dance exercise videos in particular, but...

There are some pretty good workout podcasts you can download on itunes. I've been doing yoga by video podcast for a while. Otherwise, SparkPeople has some exercise videos posted but they're mostly 15min long.

It's very hot out today and I was hoping to do a cardio workout indoors. But, I don't have any workout DVDs.

I looked around some on the Internet, but couldn't find anything good.

Does anyone have a resource where I could find dance exercise videos about 30 minutes long to download online?

This is in reply to the person who was asking about sticking to the calorie intake that SP set for them. I was at 1200 cal minimum but when I upgraded to stage 2 my calories went up to 1400 minimum. I didn't change my weight goal or anything. I am actually at my goal weight. I'm not sure how they came up with that for me, but I usually don't get 1400, but I do get around 1200.
