I will start to use some natural hormones. Just in case.

I'm new here. I take Cenestin. My dr. recommended I take it for about 10 years. It appears to be working well.

Hi, I'm new to this team. I take an estrogen/progesterone combination. It's been a little over a year and very difficult to regulate.

I'm back on Nuva Ring, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Before I tried getting by w/o hormones. I temporarily took Premarin (way back when, after my right ovary was removed), and most recently, was given Eva-mist. The eva-mist didn't even TOUCH my symptoms. I told my doc I would go to the grave with my nuva ring. I got his blessing to resume its use, and I'm happy I did. I have already dropped 2 pounds, just from being back on it (whenever I try going OFF the nuva ring, I gain weight, and begin raging menopausal symptoms).

Doc wanted me to try going off of it because he noticed some mild vaginal inflammation during an exam, which he felt was due to the nuva ring. I told him that since I wasn't feeling bothered by any "mild inflammation" (I didn't even know I had any), I'd rather take my chances.... begin nuva ring again... then break out in a fiery sweat every hour, on the hour.

I am trying the Vivelle Dot patch. I took Premarin for over 18 years due to surgical menopause in my 20s.
I have low bone density and have tried Fosamax and Evista but got extreme pain in my hips from it. Dr. feels I need to be taking something besides extra calcium and vitamin D and since I still have issues from no estrogen, she feels that is my best route at the moment.
I am on my 3rd different patch strength. The 0.1 made me feel like I was 7 months pregnant. The 0.025 felt like I was using nothing. Now I am on the .05, which is halfway between the 2 I tried. Will put on my 2nd patch tomorrow. I hope it works. It is hard to adjust each time I switch.

I read the interview with Suzanne Somers and what it doesn't mention is that she blames the cause of her hysterectomy on the fact she was taking the hormones in a static dose. She has since switched to a rhythmic dose.

This just in: A drop in hormone replacement therapy leads to a decline in breast cancer cases

The decrease in deaths from breast cancer accounted for 37 percent of the reduction in the death rate among women during the 15-year period. See report: http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/05/27/healt
h.cancer.death.rate/index.html?eref=rs

Natural or not, revved up hormones do the same thing, increase cell division in reproductive organs. Ask Suzanne Somers about her hysterectomy for severe hyperplasia of the endometrium while on bioidentical hormones.

A naturally high estrogen effect in cells has always been associated with endometrial cancer. These cells in an older women are red flagged in cytology and scrutinized for cancer.

Read the latest March 25th US News post interviewing Suzanne Somers regarding bio-identical hormones (BHRT). In the end, Suzanne Somers admitted she recently had to have a hysterectomy after experiencing uterine bleeding and severe hyperplasia. Severe endometrial hyperplasia is a stage before endometrial cancer which I would expect to happen with her history of breast cancer, 22 years on the birth control pill, and now on BHRT. She is very lucky they caught it in time.

PS: One thing is important to know: in cytology, if an older woman has a Pap smear and we are looking at it, and we notice a NATURALLY high estrogenic effect in her cells, we "red flag it" and then start looking for endometrial cells, whether normal or not. For years we have known that women who have a lot of estrogen are prone to reproductive cancer. Obese women tend to store more estrogen as it is stored in fat cells. That's why it has been standard protocol for over 30 years to scrutinized every cell on a Pap of an older woman who has a history of obesity and has a high estrogen effect in her cells, especially if she is experiencing post menopausal bleeding. Natural or not, hormones stimulate cells to divide, and hyperproliferative disorders, including hyperplasia and cancer of reproductive organs, is a common side-effect.

Just be aware that the studies are not in yet on the so called bioidenticals. Some people have said a horse is more closely related to a human than a plant. And it is estrogen, period, as well as progesterone in too high amounts for our age that cause the problems. I know two pharmacists who deal with bioidenticals. One came to me with one stage before cervical cancer and the other was already dying of ovarian cancer at the time.

It is difficult dealing with hot flashes, but if you get breast cancer, tamoxifin is often the treatment of choice, and it completely blocks estrogen and is associated with endometrial tumors, benign and malignant. Then the hot flashes are overwhelmingly unbearable. I have more than one friend who has gone through tamoxifin treatment with horror stories to tell. One is an art therapist who has an art exhibit of her experiences with breast cancer and tamoxifin that travels around the country.

These days women are working harder than ever and trying to deal with the stress of failed relationships. I think that causes a tremendous amount of stress, which in turn, depletes key micronutrients involved in the normal production of hormones and neurotransmitters involved in the homeostasis of the vasomotor and central nervous systems.

I know you are trying hard to get relief but don't give up on the micronutrients. They have to be at high levels to work and getting baseline tests for homocysteine (which tells if your B vitamins are high enough), vitamin D, magnesium, and calcium will help. I think high homocysteine (which can be due to a common gene mutation-MTHFR as well as diet and stress) as well as low levels of the above micronutrients, are big culprits in menopause.

Eat mostly raw plants (vegetables and fruits) and fish. Take a B-complex plus a separate folic acid and B12 supplement. These make the metabolism of protein and carbs extremely efficacious.

Hi, My name is Emma & I have been on a procedure called "bio identical hormone replacement therapy". I feel that this the safest way for me to go. No hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, have more energy, etc. I still gained weight from this & it's so hard to shed. Are there any suggestions as to what I can do for this? HELP !!!!!!

My doctor suggested a product called Activella (also known as Kliovance in Canada and the UK) He and I felt very safe about doing this as ALL other natural things we had tried had no effect and there is no history of breast cancer in anyone in my family. Having spent 4 years with symptoms that he said he "would not let his dog go through" I can honestly say it totally changed my life. I still had symptoms but they were kept down to a dull roar. I started it in 2004 and now I am down to 1/4 dose. I feel good about the choice I made for me. It isn't the choice for every woman - but it was the right choice for me.

The worst thing women can do is take hormones, and that includes the Pill. As a cytologist who has screened for cancer and seen countless cases of it from breast to cervical, ovarian and endometrial, and who has studied the subject intensively, I can tell you it is these hormones revved up in pill form that are causing much of the cancer today. It is so bad amphibians & birds downstream from waste water treatment plants are becoming sexually deformed with birth defective offspring due to these hormones in the water. Chronic hormone use comes with a price--increased cell division in reproductive organs, vascular problems, & immune suppression. Couple this with poor nutrition & you have a recipe for cancer (uncontrolled cell division) & heart disease. Women who have never had children have more cancer because they never had a break from estrogen by being pregnant & nursing. The dramatic drop in breast cancer alone in tandem with the drop in HRT in the past few years should not be forgotten. This is the 1st time in history that breast cancer rates have fallen. Hormones, WHETHER NATURAL OR NOT, are dangerous because they all stimulate cell division. A lack of micronutrients (folic acid, zinc, B12, D, omegas, mag, cal, etc.) is what's causing much of our health problems today, including menopausal symptoms. Nutrients help make the needed hormones in our body that control mood, sleep, appetite, ovarian cycles, etc. I am 55 and went through menopause easily by fueling my body properly with nutrient-dense foods (fruits, vegetables, and fish, etc.) & good supplements. It's all about money now in the medical world. Don't be fooled. The creator of our bodies has the health-giving substances of life out there in nature. Trust the real doctor.

Here's a good chapter to read out of my book on the history of estrogen and its risks:

Hi Lisa,

I had my hyst. in 2000. I thought I would gradually not need any hormones. But that hasn't happened yet. When I tried to stop all the menopause symptoms started up. My Dr said she wants my to stay on mine for life to help my bones.

Hi, I am Lisa.
I had a radical hysterectomy in 2007 because of cervical cancer. I haven't really had any menopausal systems except weight gain. I have been taking Premarin 1.25 mg since surgery.
I am not sure if I am even in menopause anymore because I no longer have my ovaries. emoticon

Hi everyone I'm Cheryl. I'm on the Vivelle Dot 0.05 have been for 8 years. It has been a life saver. The only problem I've had was when i tried to wean myself off. I have no other health issues except osteopenia in my left hip which was there before I had my hysterectomy. I walk, swim, ride bikes and try other exercises to keep it at bay. My Dr says I need to take calcium but my digestive system can't handle it and my #'s haven't changed in 8 years so I must be doing something right emoticon

Have a wonderful week all !!!!!

I started on low dose Prempro 3 days ago. I know it takes awhile to start working, but I'm just wondering how long? I also got back on my Zoloft last week, & my brain is already working alot better. Started back on only 25 mg of that. But I'm still flashing alot - I hope the Prempro will make a difference eventually. Oh & incidently, I read somebody a few posts back complaining about the $$$ of their meds. Get this - the Prempro cost $54 ! ! ! ! I have no idea how I'm going to swing THIS every month - waaaah. But my husband is afraid to say no - HAHAHAHAHA.

I am taking BC pills a mild dose but at 53 ya gotta know it's not for that. Didn't matter they saw a way to get my $$$$ & did. They went way up last time I bought them they were $9 this time $24 what's up w/that? I did get them so I am going to be ok. I want to talk to my DR abt a letter or something to give to my insurance company so they don't think I am trying to prevent pregnancy! I am going to start on that now so see ya later when My qest is finished.

I've been on the Vivelle dot patch (estradiol) for 2 years on a very low dose, with additional Prometrium (progesterone) dose for 10 days a month. It seems to be working quite well for me without significant side effects. Patch is easy - changed 2x/week - and very small, worn on the "booda belly"!

Here we go again I am back to the begining! The other two were too emotional! Wish me luck. Can't remember why I switched anyway. I only know they didn't work!

Welcome CuteShirl,

I am on TriNessa (estrogen/progest combination) for my perimenopause; including .5 mg of Estradiol for a little bit more estrogen. Then I take 60/90 mg of Armour for my thyroid.

I have been on my thyroid for two years and had it changed from its original dosage (30 mg) once. But I have read that it could change again any time soon. Or it could be years before I need a change in meds.

As with the thyroid, my HRT changed as well. I was only taking the TriNessa for a year but this past January experienced some hormonal fluctuations. In March, my doctor then added the 0.5 mg of Estradiol to my daily HRT meds.

First let me recommend this web site for your perimenopause/menopause symptoms: POWER SURGE: http://www.power-surge.com

This site also covers information about thyroid too, as well as providing info about alternative treatments and such for perimenopause/menopause.

Just my opinion as I am not a doctor… Your face flushes returning could be a sign that you are experiencing another fluctuating hormone imbalance, and seeing your doctor for hormone levels is the only remedial course of action. Once you get those test results then maybe a change (increase or decrease) in your HRT meds is all that is required.

My doctor suggested a high B-Complex multivitamin that’s it. *S*

i am taking the weakest dose of estradiol and progesterone for over a year as well as taking levothyroxine for my hypo for about 10 yrs. I am starting to experience face flushes again and am wondering what is going on here? I actually was thinkin of weaning myself off the HRT and try more natural, but am scared now to do it...I also have started on CLA pills, 5HTP, as well as trying the ThyroSense as well as multivitamin!!! I go for a blood test again on the 15th to see whats going on, as we had to decrease my dose of thyroid, I feel fine otherwise...any suggestions?

Menopause is a condition that we can take very serious. Scottie if you take 2 years to find the right medication and Dar is changing medication again. I don't know how many meds my friend, Dar, have being thru but suppose she doesn't find the right meds on time. She have being in more bad mood that good mood. Sorry Dar.What can happen to her if she don't get the right med on time? Does she still with those secondaries symptoms. I'm just thinking because I don't want to go thru all of these things you are talking about in others topic.

Darly11,

I know how frustrated and inconvenienced you must feel right now. Getting the right mix takes time - mine took two years. But your life feels like its on hold during that wait. I was afraid to do anything fearing I would either cry and get mad without provocation. I dont make a very good hermit... *LOL*

Your success and treatment is on my heart and prayers. *S*

I have been taking Tri Nessa 28 (birth control) for almost a year. Just a month ago she added Estradiol to my mix; .5 mg daily. In January my periods went from 7 days to 3 days, and I kept having PMS and mood swings throughout the month. Today I am doing sooooo much better with the depressin and PMS.

But I also take Armour Thyroid 60mg/90mg dosage; a change made at the same time - use to be 30mg daily dose. I think this change too had an impact on my depression and PMS.

For the edema I take Spironolactone 25 mg, daily.

As of this writing, it has been five weeks since my med changes and I feel like when I was in my twenties (Mentally, physically, and emotionally). I pray the hormones will remain "stabilized" - HAHAHAHAHAHA, ain't I a laugh!!! Hormones and stabilized do not belong in the same sentence, or even the same room! *LOL*

I take low dose PremPro, and am hoping to either get off the meds or go to the very lowest dose after I see my doctor next month. I think my husband is scared!

Well after having every symptom possible which is usually the case I am actually having a better time on this RX. I don't know if I want to be a guinea pig for the other pill now. I kept the exercise going & took what they told me too to make the transition but if I had to take that many pills everyday I wouldn't like this one at all. It's nice being over here on the other side. Finally!!
