Rejoined ( new user name) after months gone....

UPDATED: 5/18/14

I'm 57 years old and have about 60 lbs. total to lose to get to a point where I'll feel I'm at a healthier weight. Once I reach that weight, then I'll decide if I want to go lower.
On April 30th of this year I cut out 98% of regular sugars and 100% of diet sugar/diet foods.
I feel this is what I need to do to help my over all health. I've gone thru the withdrawal period already, which wasn't a lot of fun, but it could have been worse. And since the 1st of this month I am now down 6 lbs., 4 lbs. of it just this past week, so I know what I am doing is working.

Hi, my name is Gwen; I live in South Florida with DH. We have 3 adult children and 2 grands. I enjoy early morning brisk walks for my choice of exercise, flower gardening, reading, and shopping. I love the title of this group; I am working on losing 40 lbs "one day at at time" sometimes "one meal at a time" (smile) Looking forward to meeting new friends here.
Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Welcome Alicia!

I can totally relate to food being the addiction of choice. I don't enjoy the ocassional sweets, I enjoy being totally immersed in sweets. I always said if I quit eating sweets I'd starve to death.
I really buckled down & dropped almost 40 pounds, last year. But for the last 2 months I have been out of control & the my weight has been climbing. I'm so ashamed that I have not updated my SP ticker, to show my correct weight.

So, we need to just concentrate on today. Forgive the past and just do our very best to eat better & exercise, today. Because every little bit helps on our journey.

Well, here I am again. Hi, everyone. I'm Alicia, and I've been an off-and-on member of SP since 2007. At my highest weight ever, I am now 290 pounds and can't even go downstairs to the freezer for meat and back up again without being out of breath.

I am a Christian woman who wants to be a healthy vessel for God, an attractive wife for her husband, and a healthy & fit mom for her three daughters. I have this little problem with commitment, and every New Year's I say it's going to be different this time. (It never is.) For once, I want this to be real and permanent. At this point, I don't care how slowly the weight comes off... it will never compare to all the years I've been obese. (About ten, by the way!) I'm sick of it. I can't live like this anymore.

I've been in counseling before. I have some issues which I won't get into, but let's just say that food is my "addiction of choice." Even though I know it in my mind, I can't seem to get ahold of it. I don't think I eat a lot of junk... I enjoy the occasional sweets. But I think my problem is portion control and not such healthy food choices. We don't deep fry a lot, but we love our red meat and potatoes with lots of butter!

Oh well, I guess that's the long-short of it. Glad to be here. Hope I can meet some people that can relate.

-Alicia

I was a member of sparkpeople a couple times under different user names but since menopause, my thinking gets all screwed up and I let emotions get the best of me. So I end up dropping teams or leaving sparkpeople completely. But I'm back to stay this time, no matter what til I lose this weight.
******************UPDATED 10-27-2012********************
Ok, I had these big plans and guess I'm trying to do too much all at once. So here's an update on what I will be working towards now and hope with everything I have in me, I can stick with.
I went back to weighing and will weigh once a week instead of daily, starting tomorrow. After 30 years of weighing daily; going cold turkey just isn't going to work for me. So it'll be once a week for now.
I plan to do a modified low carb plan. That means I will basically be giving up 98% of the junk carbs but allowing the veggie and fruit carbs that most low carb plans frown on. For now I'm going to allow myself the 150 grams of carbs a day maximum but work to keep it lower.
In the past this would have me so frustrated I'd say to H*** with it and leave sparkpeople. That's not happening this time. I'm determined, come h*** or high water, I'm going to stick it out and do my best each day to eat in moderation of whatever I do eat and get in 30 minutes of some form of exercise and over time maybe add a little more. There will be days when I'm very active and then there will be days where I do good to get in the 30 minutes. It is what it is. All I can do is what I can each day.
I know this is a process but it looks like I could find something that would "click" for me and not be so friggin' hard.
But I'm not leaving and each day I'll do the very best I can.

I was here before but changed my username so thought I'd re-introduce myself.

Hi all,

I was away on a long vacation. While I'm not entirely happy to be back to reality, I am happy to be able to return to Spark. I truly missed my Spark Friends.
And now we've got a couple new members and I wasn't even here to properly greet them.

So a great big welcome! We are a small, but friendly & supportive group. We usually have a fun monthly challenge, but I didn't think about starting one for Oct., before I left. So this month has kind of fallen through the cracks.

Hope you will enjoy O.D.A.A.T.

Hi Everyone, My name is Eileen and I am 66 years old. I have about 70 pounds to lose and have been trying (or playing with trying) for several years now and I have not been very successful. The name of this group kind of jumped out at me. I think that is maybe how I should try this One Day At A Time.
I have many health problems and losing weight would be a great advantage. I had Cardiac ByPass Surgery in May of 2011, I am diabetic (Type II ) Have Hypertension, Thyroid problems and weight loss would help almost all of the problems.
So here I am Looking for Support and motivation.
Tomorrow morning I will start my day talking to my Lord and then having a glass of water.

UPDATED: SEPT. 27-2012

For many, many years I've tried to lose weight the way I always have in the past ( that worked), but this time it hasn't worked the way I wanted it to. And scale watching just made me unhappy as I watched the numbers go up and up. So I've decided to no longer depend on a scale. I tried this before but ended up getting back on it. But this time I won't be using the scale anymore. I intend to only step on a scale when I see the doctor the 1-2 times a year I go in for check-ups. I will take my measurements once a month on the first to see what progress if any I'm making.
I'm basically going to be sticking to calorie counting and trying to get in at least 30 minutes a day of some form of activity I enjoy to get myself in shape.

Welcome back to SparkPeople Kitten!

It's great to have you join our little team. What we are really all about is just trying our best, today. If we make mistakes, big or small, we forgive ourselves and try and do better the next day.

You had such great success losing 45 pounds, and I am sure you will reach your goal again. I've heard great things about the P90X. Mostly what I've heard is, it's really hard & will kick your butt! I think you might be tougher than you think you are. Very impressed with you being in the Army. That's not for the weak. ( physically, mentally or emotionally ) You sound like a fighter & a survivor! I think you will do amazing on this journey. You will find great support & friendship here. People who will be there for you & cheer you on!

It sounds like your immediate family is wonderful! It's hard to know what might inspire someone to start this journey. But since you came back to SP. I think you might already be inspired to get healthy. You can do this & you know you can, because you have done it before! Do it for yourself & your wonderful husband & children. Don't worry about the toxic people in your life and the friends who are not there for you. Just concentrate on you, on your journey to a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Big hugs to you!

My name is Lisa (nickname is Kitten due to the fact I REALLY love Hello Kitty). I am in my middle/upper 30's, married for 15yrs to a wonderful supportive man that I met while in the Army. I have two beautiful children, a Daughter, just turned 13 and a Son who is 11. They are my entire world, I don’t have any "outside" friends to speak of and family, well there is big issues there. I have been on Spark for over 5yrs on and off, mostly off the last 3yrs. My first year I went from 180 to 135 (size 20W to 8) and I loved it, felt healthy even though according to the BMI I was still "fat" ...I am only 5ft tall, disadvantages of being short, ugh. Then life happened. I hit rock bottom with depression. By Oct 2008 I did the unthinkable and went back home, which I had promised myself when I left I would NEVER go back. So we left Oklahoma and went to Wisconsin. We ended up living with my parents 11months, however about 8 months into that my mother and I had a falling out, real bad. I started having panic attacks and wasn’t able to sleep, I would go days without being able to go or stay asleep. We moved again in Aug 09, just across town, so it wasn’t much better. We lived in such a small town everyone knew what everyone else was doing. My Dr suggested that I try to go back to work in an attempt to reverse my severe social anxiety and depression. Well it back fired, I found work in Feb 2010 and had to stop by Aug 2010. Things just went from bad to worse. By this time Sept 2010 I reached my heaviest weight EVER, including pregnancy weights, 186. I was on medications for Manic Depression, severe anxiety, CFS, Restless leg syndrome and developed Fibromyalgia. By Feb 2011 I was on disability and would only leave the house when absolutely necessary about once a month or less. March of 2011 I decided I needed a program to keep me on track so I started P90X which I completed in 113 days (normally takes 90 but I had to take it a lot slower due to my body hating me). After I finished in July I for some reason hit rock bottom again and haven't been able to pull myself up since. In Dec my DH's work contract ended and has been without work since. We have moved again, from Wisconsin to Texas, to be closer to his family and get me out of the toxic location(even my DR said I wouldn’t even have a hope of getting better until I moved FAR away). We have been in TX for a little over 2 1/2 months now and I am still in a "funk". I cant seem to get and stay started. It seemed as if every friend I had made in the last 5yrs disappeared and I was doing this alone. I am usually the one everyone turned to when they needed help and now that I FINALLY admit that I need that help returned no one is there. So I deleted my previous account and now am started fresh with EVERYTHING. I need some sort of kick start and I just have to find the right leg to give it to me.

If I get to wordy just let me know to "shut it" cause I can go when I get going. Oh and if I ramble I am sorry now, my brain gets foggy at times and may seem like it makes sense but I go back later and read and sounds awful...lol. Hope I am not scaring anyone from getting to know me and I would love to get to know each of you better .

Hi Tia!

Welcome to the team!

As long as you never give up, you will always succeed. Everyone has bad days on this weight loss journey. Just know that you can come here any time, we'll cheer your victories and totally understand how you feel about plateaus & setbacks.

Too big a goal can feel overwhelming, but taking a day at a time is very doable. It's important to make changes slowly, so you don't feel deprived. Slow and steady...and before you know it you will be fifty & fabulous!

You can do this!

Hi I'm Tia,
I saw the name of the group while searching for a group and it resonated with me. I am definitely taking this one day at a time. I've been a member of spark since july 2009 when I made my first attempt at weightloss. This will be my third attempt. Like Brenda stated I too am struggling at getting a handle on taking care of myself. I know what to do but keeping myself on my to do list has eluded me. I'll be 50 years old on January 3, 2013 and I'd like to be well on my way to getting it right. Consitent in my exercise habits, making good food choices and keeping myself at the top of my to do list. By being success at those 3 things the 75+ pounds that I need to lose to get my weight proportionate to my height and to get out of the obesity category will naturally occur. One day at a time is how I'll achieve this! Looking forward to getting to know all of you here at D.A.A,T.

WE ARE WORTHY OF LIVING THE LIFE OF OUR DREAMS.

Hi Brenda!

It's great to have you join us.
I love the concept of taking it one day at a time. Just do your very best, today. Some days will be great, some days you may struggle. Just remember to forgive yourself and vow to make the next day a better one.

Slow is the way to go!

HI everyone,
I love the idea of one day at a time...and I love this idea associated with fitness, weight loss, focus and determination in reaching goals. I think it's simple enough for my overloaded brain....lol

I'm a busy woman but I'm trying to get less busy so I can take best care of myself. I have a super husband and I told him last night that my goal is 1 pound per week...This is reasonable and I'll get there, O.D.A.A.T!

I also have two grown children---the most amazing people----and I work 4 days/week as an oncology nurse. I have the most rewarding life in so many ways, I just can't seem to get a real handle on taking the very best care of myself.

I need to take best care of me then I'll be optimal for everyone I love and those that love me!

Looking forward to the connections,
Brenda

Welcome Vivien! emoticon

When I first started tracking my food, I planned my whole days meals & snacks the night before. Then I had a list, knew what I was eating and didn't have to worry about making any choices. It was already decided.
I made sure that there were some goodies, like dark chocolate, included in my pre-planned meals. I never felt like I was missing out on anything delicious.

It's really important to start with small goals and to reward yourself as you reach those goals. I also think it's really important to forgive yourself, if you have any setbacks. One day of overindulging does not ruin everything. Missing a couple workouts is not a reason to quit. Do the very best you can today and remember, tomorrow is another day.

This is a journey to a healthier lifestyle, not a race to lose weight. Slow & steady is how it is going to become 2nd nature.

You can do this!

Welcome to SparkPeople & One Day At A Time, Tausha! emoticon

This is a great web site, so many tools to help you meet your goals. Plenty of health info & support. You wont be alone on your journey to a healthier lifestyle. You've got all of SP here to help as well. Were all in this together. We may be at different points in our journey, but we all understand.

I love knowing that it's not all or nothing. Just because I missed the gym today, doesn't mean that I should give up completely. Or if I just happen to have 2 days worth of calories at lunch, I know I can forgive myself & do better tomorrow.
You don't have to give up, because you goofed up! No one is perfect.

Hello Everyone! My name is Tausha, and I have just started using Spark. I have 125 pounds to lose, and hope to do it over the next year.

In one of the earlier posts someone wrote: Forgive & forget the past, and just do your very best today. I love it. It is so true. We can't punish ourselves for the past, we have to learn from it and move on, which is what I hope to do.

I'm the heaviest I've ever been in my life and it's time I get back to a weight I know will be healthier for me. I'm working towards getting down to 185 lbs. I won't be thin but I'll be much healthier than I am now.

Good Afternoon,

I'm Lydia, a 59 yr old divorced mom with an 11 yr old daughter. I am on meds for anxiety/depression. One of my meds has caused me to gain 12 pounds in the last 6 weeks. I had been steadily loosing weight up to that point.

I am a practicing pagan, advanced practice nurse and attachment practicing mom. Wow, no wonder I am tired all the time. LOL.

My food plan is low carb, increased fruit and veggies and lean protein. My exercise plan is little bits one step in front of the other.

Blessed Be from Wesley Chapel, FL

I am in my happy place.

Hi, I'm Catherine from the UK. Today is my first day in the O.D.A.A.T. team. And it's been a good day; I have tracked EVERYTHING that I have eaten, tracked my exercise, and am looking forward to seeing the 40lb that I want to lose disappear gently and gracefully. Tomorrow will be another day and I am looking forward to that being a good one too. Meals are already planned in advance and I have promised myself to track everything.

Hi, I'm Vicki. I live in Titusville, Fl. I'm 55 years old and 100 lbs over weight. I've been trying for over a year to get my weight down and all I've done is yo-yo back and forth. So I've started a low carb plan like I did back in the 80's ( I lost 105 lbs in 13 months and kept it off for 18 years), and I'm hoping to get the weight back off over the course of the next 2 years. I'm not nearly as active as I used to be so I know the weight won't come off as fast as it did back then. Plus I've gone into full menopause so my body tends to have a mind of it's own. I lose motivation easily so I'm hoping the team will help keep me motivated to stay on track. Thanks for having me.

Hi everyone, I'm Amanda :) I've been on SparkPeople for a a little over a year but I've not been on for a long while picking myself up and dusting off ready to lose this last 51 pounds by my birthday in may!

When the end of the journey seems impossible to reach, all you need to do is take one more step.

Welcome Vanessa! Don't feel bad, I am surprised myself I haven't been asked that question many times. But you are in the right place and you are doing something about it. Remember to be patient and be consistent. This is about change not diets. Eat healthier, exercise more, drink plenty of water and get educated and informed about your journey. YOU CAN DO THIS!

Hello everyone! I'm Vanessa (33), married to Eric and mother to three sons, Jonathan (14), Riley (9) and Elijah (7). I've been trying to lose weight very unsuccessfully for a few years now and I just can't do it anymore. I rejoined spark a couple of days ago and today was asked when I was due at work so I'm ready to get this over with :)

Welcome to this team ladies and thanks for introducing yourselves and sharing with us a little bit about you. We all have different and similar reasons for being here on SP. We all need to lose weight for health reasons. If we're not already sick than we will eventually be if we don't change and do something about it while we still can. It's not easy, it will not happen over night but IT IS POSSIBLE and WE CAN DO THIS. We just need to always no matter what BELIEVE IN OURSELVES and TRUSTthe process. Let's eat better and exercise more and lets do it consistently until it becomes part of our daily habits. We deserve to feel good and look good. ONE DAY AT A TIME we are going to take control of our lives and kick obesity's butt!!! WHO'S WITH ME? WOOT WOOT!!!

Long-term Goal: To overcome my hesitation and stay focused long enough no matter what happens in my life.

Hi! I'm not really new, I've been a member for a few weeks now, I've just never introduced myself today. I received a team email today, and the reminded me that I forgot to do this. I'm a married mother of two. I recently decided to get a little healthier. I do not have any medical problems, but I am over weight. SO its time to get fit. The whole family is involved to we are eating much more fruits and vegetables than we ever have before. And we are also drinking 8 glasses of water daily. These are little changes, but they have helped to me loose 14 pounds and 13 1/2 inches.

Hi ! I am new to this team too. Like you, I decided to take charge of my life and health. I wish you the best of luck. I joined the gym today and hope to start swimming too. Today I walked on the treadmill for 50 minutes, I thought I was going to die, but didn't emoticon . I had to sit and rest after that. I am happy to announce that I have lost 8 pounds, showing all the effort is paying off. Hang in there! You can do it!

I am Sally. I have been a member of SP for a few months but now I am really trying to commit to it. I have terrible problems with stress and overeating due to stress. I hope to learn better ways to control it instead of with food. I am looking to lose 15-20lbs. Any help or support is greatly appreciated. Thanks! emoticon

Welcome to the team Terijr! Swimming is a great way to exercise. If I knew how to swim I probably be doing it every day. I believe on the SP main page on the right upper corner there's tabs you can click on that have tutorials to show you how things work. Other than that you'll get more familiar as time goes by. Teams are a great way to receive and give support and be challenged and held accountable. Reaching out to others going through the same struggles as you. One choice at a time! Remember is not about dieting or depriving ourselves. It is about long term results that only come through lifestyle change.

Long-term Goal: To overcome my hesitation and stay focused long enough no matter what happens in my life.

Hi Yesi! Thanks for inviting me to your team. I could really use the support. I don't know how it works here in cyberworld but I'm willing to give it a try.

I have the common story of struggling with my weight all my life. I have been up and down a bit. I believe this time I have better skills to handle this challenge. I know one thing: I want to make better life choices. I'm learning how to be a healthy person but I'm not sure what all that entails right now. I've started tracking my food for portion control and I've started swimming for 45 minutes a day for 6 days. It feels good to swim. I was a good swimmer when I was young and it seems I haven't forgotten how. haha Yay! I don't know how this team stuff works so pardon me if I goof up.

Again thanks for reaching out to me.

Hi Katrina,

I am so glad you decided to pick up SP again. A support system is so needed in this journey. Just remember it is not a diet, keep track of what you eat as much as you can. EXERCISE (Break a sweat), drink your water and take it one day at a time, one choice at a time. YOU CAN DO THIS.

Hello everyone, I'm Katrina :) I've been on SparkPeople for a few months but I've dropped off and am starting all over again. My boyfriend's starting Weight Watchers on Tuesday, so that will make it easier because we'll both be focusing on being healthier. I used to be part of WW as well, but it was mostly for my mom. This time, I'm doing it for myself. I hope to keep motivated this time :) Nice to meet you all!

Change just takes one step at a time.

Welcome Andrea, I too have developed certain things I believe due to my obesity and it stinks (Hypothyrodism, plantar fasciitis, sleep apnea)...................... and it is making this journey so difficult. My progress is super slow but I am fighting myself daily from letting that discourage me. At some point something has to change.

It stinks, right?!!

All the women on my mom's side were like that, so it has to be genetics! All the women were super thin/petite until they had children.. Just my luck! hahahaha! I came home from the hospital in a size 12 (after being a 0-1) so I was stuck in maternity clothes for months until I could afford to go shopping. Everything in my closet had to go to GoodWill. I'd give anything to be a 12 now! hahahaha! My goal is 155 lbs. which would put me in a 8, 9/10 or an 11?? Who knows with how they keep changing the clothing/sizing.. Just got out of my size 16's! YAY! In a 14 now. (I started trying to lose weight in the spring when I reached 197 lbs!) Wasn't too serious though since I'm just now 186. I could be at goal by now If I wouldn't have kept flip-flopping! emoticon

Nice ta meet ya!

Hi ya Everyone. emoticon

I'm Stacy..

Facts about me:
I'm 38, married 18 years and counting, we have a son that is a senior this year, and we live in Farm Country. LOL We are born & raised Texans that were transplanted in NE AR for hubby's new job. (He lost his job of 18 yrs. in Dallas when the plant closed down.) All our family/friends are now 7 hrs. away back home. We have been in AR since July, 2010

I have been battling my weight since giving birth. (18 yrs. ago!!)
I was once a tiny little thing.. I'm 5'9 and was 115 lbs. I was a healthy size 0-1
I was one of those young girls just born w/a great metab and could eat anything and everything and not gain an ounce!

My body changed SO much while preggers and then giving birth.
I want my struggle to be over an finally become fit/healthy and lose the 30+ lbs!!

Welcome to the team Renee, Monika, and Kayla. I have come to believe that diets are only temporarily solutions and does not address the real problem in our weight which is us and our lack of control. We need to make long-term changes in our lives. Not deprive ourselves but be more cautious and responsible, exercise more, ..........................................
..... We can do this! We are that strong we just have to BELIEVE in ourselves. I wish all of you the best and hope that each new day you tackle it with a bang and conquer it. Hugs!

Hi my name is Kayla. I have been married for almost 8 years and my husband is a medically retired Marine. I never had to worry about my weight up until about 4 years ago. On 9/27/2007 I had my second miscarriage and my grandmother passed away of a heart attack. Today marks the 4 year anniversary of what I call the worst day of my life and I've decided that NOW is the time to make a change. My husband and I are trying to start a family and are having to work with a a fertility specialist because of the fertility issues I am having as a result of my weight gain. I have gained over 75 pounds in the course of the last 4 years but I am determined to get this extra weight off and never end up back in this position again. I just joined Spark People today as a result of my new resolution and am very excited about my journey. I know that it's not going to be easy but I do know that it will be worth it just to get back to myself. I wish everyone the very best of luck and look forward to taking this journey with you all!

I'm Renee'
married over 25 years, 4 kids ages 20, 17, 15, 11
age - 46
where you're from - AR
about your journey to health - hit and miss lately
how much are you looking to lose - originally about 88 lbs, but according to what I've recently read, I need to lose about 121 lbs!
what's your plan - tried them all. Did great on Atkins for a long time, but when I went off it... gained it all back. Also tried WW... same thing happened... now I'm reading Eat to Live.
how long you been with SP - over 3 years - long enough to have lost 57 lbs, then gain it all back plus some... and now struggling to lose it all again.
and how did you hear about them - googled for an online calorie counter years ago.
Been big all my life, sometimes bigger than other times.

It's about time I actually reached my goal weight! (never done before)

One day at a time! :)

My name is Tracy. I am from Louisiana and have two great kids and a fabulous husband. I have been overweight my entire adult life. My mother died from diabetes two years ago and it wasn't pretty. I have had something snap inside me that said, "You need to take better care of yourself or the rest of your life will be like Mom's". I want to enjoy my children, my husband and my grandkids. NOT lay around and do nothing all the time. More than lose weight I want a lifestyle change to where it will STAY off. I want to lose 60 pounds by April 12, 2012. That is my first wedding anniversary and I would love to be able to give my husband a new wife. He loves me for me regardless of my size but I would feel better knowing that I am doing what I can to give us long years together. My hardest part is lack of motivation. When I get discouraged it is hard to bring myself back up to speed. I need accountability and I need a cheerleader. That is why I joined SparkPeople. Thanks for inviting me to the team. I look forward to great and wonderful things.

Lori, walking and swimming are two great ways to be active and get healthy. Swimming works all muscle groups in your body. If I knew how to swim I be in the pool a lot. I will eventually once I lose enough weight take up swimming lessons. I believe you can do this. If you are doing everything right and still no change than maybe check in with your doctor, you may have a thyroid problem (I do) but remember some people don't see change for weeks some times so do not be discouraged, continue on.

Medium-Term Goal: Reaching my goal 5% at a time.
