Hi Cherie - Welcome to the team. Do take care of yourself and give your knee plenty of time to heal. You can still participate. If you have any photos of your garden last year, we would love to see them.
We live in zone 5 and have lots of clay soil here also. My husband calls it "gumbo".
Take care and jump right in and make yourself at home.
I'm Cherie - an avid gardener, except this year as I am recvering from a knee replacement. Next year I plan to be back in the garden! My favorite veggie gardening includes tomatoes, squash, cukes, peas & beans, & sometimes okra. Flowers - well, everything.
I'm a HUGE fan of heirloom tomatoes & hope to start planting other heirloom plants - squashes etc. I live in the country & we have lots of space to garden. We own a massive tiller, not the little thing you see on TV. It takes a lot of work to start a new garden space - we have a lot of clay & quartz rocks. Sometimes the tiller can't hanle the quartz & I have to use a pick-ax to break it up & then haul it off by hand!
So it's major work & I get pretty strong & fit just gardening. After all the tilling & rock breaking I have to ammend the soil. I use newspapers on the bottom (to slow weed growth), our garden compost, horse manure from a nearby stable, cow manure from the farmers' co-op, etc. etc. We get giant, healthy plants that produce like crazy.
SOoo.. I've rambeled on too long - I'm glad to be here. Thanks to Bkwrm for inviting me!
