Hi everyone. I am retired and I live in the Mojave desert about one hour south west of Death Valley and one hour south of Mt. Whitney. These are the highest and lowest points in California. Also it is planting zone 9. It gets up to 118 in the summer and down in the 20's in the winter. It snow here at least once a year but it doesn't last very long.
I really don't have a very green thumb but I do try. We are planning on putting in a larger garden this year. My next door neighbor use to grow the best tomatoes and he always planted over 100 plants so I had all of the tomatoes I wanted to can. Well he passed away in 2007. Now I am going to have to grow my own. The only flowers I can grow are roses. We are planning on planting some fruit trees this year. Last weekend we planted some pomegranate cuttings. I understand that they are a fast growing tree/bush. We will see.
This last summer I started canning a lot more of our food. I canned green beans, carrots, kidney beans, white beans, garbanzo beans, bread and butter pickles, green tomato relish, pickle relish, apple sauce, pomegranate jelly, apple pie filling, beef and barley soup, chicken soup, potatoes, and strawberry jelly. I bake all of my own bread, including hamburger and hot dog buns. I also like to crochet.
I am married and have four children (two are step-children), 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. We celebrated our 25th anniversary last year. I love Sparkpeople. I am so thankful for having found this web sight.
