Hello All!

I am training for my first half at the Plano Balloon Festival in Plano, Texas this September. I'm also going to travel to Atlanta in December for the Jeff Galloway 13.1, which I am very excited about because he has helped me so much.

I just turned 44 and I took up running a little over a year ago for the first time in my life. I've lost 100 pounds now and I have about 50 to go in order to reach my goal weight.

Looking forward to getting to know you other half marathoners!

I realize that some of these posts are old, but it's interesting how many people ran their first half around the time they were 50. I am registered to run my first half on my 50th birthday in May! I am excited and nervous.

I'm so excited for you both! You will certainly meet your goal and cross that finish line. I'm happy to help if you want to pick my brain about things while your train. You motivated me to sign up for a 10th Half! Just have to pick it. Running has brought such depth and happiness to my life. I'm SO glad it is doing the same for you.

I have decided to try a half marathon. Signed up for the Med City half in Rochester, Mn. in May. This will give me 5 months to train. I have run several 5K and one 7 mile race last summer. I am not a fast jogger. Often times I walk and jog intermittently. The race is a bucket list item before I reach 60. I am 57 now. Decided to join the forum for support and direction. I am excited for 2014.

I finally registered for my first HM! It was not because I procrastinated, or turned 50 (past that). I had to find the perfect race, but it found me when Asheville added a HM to their spring marathon. I started road running last March, and on the 1 year anniversary, will complete a HM! I am really excited to be able to under take such a goal at this point in my life. I embrace the fitness I have been able to achieve every step of the way.

I ran a 10K on turkey day, and I am officially taking a rest period before training in earnest 3 weeks from now. I will cross train in the meantime, swim some laps and more. In Feb, I am running an indoor 5K (Chicago's McCormick Place) with my DH and his first 5K. Hopefully, I will find one more 10K or 10M race before the HM. In January, I expect I will need extra motivation to go outside, so will join a local training group.

Glad to be here with such a committed group!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I had a very good week as far as running and exercise is concerned. Breathing is much better and I am very hopeful. Yesterday I ran intervals for 2 hours and felt really good. First hour I did 4:1 and the second hour I did 3:2 intervals. I went about 9 miles and felt like "I CAN DO IT!". Hopefully, the Asthma flare-up is over and I can move forward with this.

One good thing, training in this heat and humidity should make for a better race in Sept.

Congratulation on signing up. If you can hike the distance you can make it during the race.

I always use run-walk-run intervals... especially for longer distances. Nothing wrong with it.

Have fun and enjoy!

Good luck to you on running your first 1/2 marathon! I ran my first 2 days after turning 50 and it was a great experience. I'm currently training for a half in August, so I'll be putting in some miles in the warmer weather to prepare for a hot run. Enjoy the experience!

I am 55 and ran my first 1/2 3 weeks before my 50th birthday. Did 3 more that year and my first marathon the following May, one year after my first 1/2. Racing 13.1 miles is different than running it so you will learn a great deal in your first race but most of all enjoy the experience? Look around, soak up the atmosphere and talk to other racers. I have not raced in 2 years; have recently started a 1/2 training program with a goal of racing one this Oct. looking forward to it. emoticon

For your first half, the goal should just be to finish it. I see lots of posts from people who, after their first, set a new goal to finish in under 2'30", so don't be upset if you don't meet that time. I know you'll do FANTASTIC though and CONGRATULATIONS! Can't wait to hear how it goes!

One of my biggest goals for this year is to run a Half. I will turn 50 in December and I wanted to do it this year. (What the relevance is...I don't know) I started running 4 years ago and have done 5k and 10k races to this point. Honestly I never expected to run anything other than the first 5k and that was it. I just wanted to see if I could do it. (I bet you heard that before)

Anyway, as it happens to a lot of us, I just kept running and wanting to go further. Keep pushing and challenging myself in the name of physical and mental health. I have some problems with asthma and it has put quite a damper on my running over the past couple of months but I am currently under a Doctor's care and the flare-up seems to be some what under control.

My Half is on Sept 8 and it is in Harrisburg, PA. I am a very strong hiker and walker that has gone plenty of miles over 13 in one outing. So my cross-training is hiking and biking. I love distance in those sports and hope that 13.1 in running is within my reach.

Due to the breathing difficulties I may not be able to run the whole distance and I have to accept that if it is to be. But I am darn well going to try to come in under 2h 30m. Doable??? We will see. Run, walk or crawl....I am crossing that line.

Live your life as though you are obligated to make the world a better place. Make a difference today.
